Cant open new default iPhoto 11 library

Hi, I recently downloaded iphoto 11. It seems I now have two iphoto library's, a new 'default' one that wont open and a second one that does open but is missing a whole heap of photo's. What is going on and how do I open the library that I cant open?

Hi Leonie, from further examination, the 'default' library that wont open is located in users/pictures/iphoto library and is 42gb in size. When I try to open it it tells me that "iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take and hour or more to complete".
I then press the URGRADE button from where another message appears - "iphoto unable to open this library" and only gives me the option to quit.
I can open the second library, which is located in "applications/iphoto library" (and is 11.89gb), by opening iphoto while pressing the option button. Interestingly, when i open this iphoto library, iphoto tells me three times "iphoto wants to use your confidential information stored in "publish.me.com" in your key chain" - whatever that means.
Thanks for your help as I am a bit lost with this and am not keen to lose 42gb of photos's.

  • I cant open my current iPhoto library using this version (8.1.2) of iPhoto

I recently (August 2014) bought a new macbook pro with OS X Maverick 10.9.4 and I have an old white macbook with OS X 10.7.5. I went to the apple store to transfer all of my data from my old mac to my new mac. Everything synced except for my photos in iPhoto, which I had alot of. The people at apple sent me home with cable cords to try syncing my iPhoto again but when I got home to open my iPhoto on my old mac, the app gave me a message that had the title "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto" and with the subtext "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." The message gives me a 'quit' button and that's it. My time-machine also doesn't work (which is a whole different story) so I can't use that to get to my iPhoto. I'm not sure if purchasing the new version of iPhoto on my old computer will work because I'm not sure if it will have all of my old photos in it that I need to access. I just really want my old iPhoto back with all my wonderful pictures

Connect the two systems together and drag the iPhoto library over from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system

  • Cant open videos in iphoto

Prior to installing snow, double click on mpeg video taken with digital camera in iphoto and the video played with quicktime. Now nothing happens when I double click. Quicktime X is installed. Would consider getting rid of X and installing Quicktime 7 instead. Any simple solution??

    Any simple solution??
QT X is a whole new area for experimentation. Can't make any tests at the moment as my Snow Leopard platform is/will be busy most of the dat performing conversions and I don't have any MPEG-1 content in iPhoto anyway. However, where would be what I would try...
Would consider getting rid of X and installing Quicktime 7 instead.
Snow Leopard structure embed is dual 32-/64-bit transition version. Both QT X and QT 7 (v7.6.3) can simultaneously reside on your platform. Simply install the QT 7 software in the "extras" installer package on you Snow Leopard installation disc. This will install the QT 7 Player in your "Applications > Utilities" folder.
Prior to installing snow, double click on mpeg video taken with digital camera in iphoto and the video played with quicktime. Now nothing happens when I double click.
Once installed on your system, here is what I would do. Try opening the QT 7 Player and leave it active in the background. Now try double-clicking the MPEG-1 file in iPhoto and see if it automatically opens and plays as it used to do. The reasoning here is that some users have indicated that various movie playback operations will default to the open QT 7 Player rather than opening the closed QT X Player. Frankly, I'm not at all sure what will happen here, but it would be something I would try/test on my Snow Leopard platform if I could access it without worrying about a possible interruption in conversions already in progress. Whether or not it works, please post back with your results so others will have an idea as to what "workarounds" may work for them.

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • I cant open new tabs by clicking the blank area next to the tabs

I used to be able to simply double click on the blank space next to currently open tabs (not just the little plus sigh) to open an new tab. Since yesterday I can no longer do this. I am running version 7.0.1. I don't know if this happened at the same time an update did. If this is an error, how do I fix it? If this was caused by an update, how to I change it back? It's very frustrating to have to click on that small little box to open a tab!

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

    Hi petemack,
iTunes on your Windows machine allows you to sync and organize your iOS apps. The apps themselves can only be run from an iOS device, such as on your iPhone. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Opening new default browser from java app

    Hi There,
I would like to know if there is away to execute the following in a Java app that will open a new browser window.......in other words, I don't want it to take over the already opened window - just open a new window every time.
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler
www.google.co.nz");Any help with this would be greatly receievd.

There might be. However it would be done by modifying that Windows-specific command that you have in red there. As such it's nothing to do with Java. Searching in Windows-specific websites might get you somewhere.
However Firefox gives the choice (new window, new tab, or same tab in same window) to the user as a configuration option, so I wouldn't bet on getting somewhere. I don't know if IE has a similar configuration option.

  • Name misspelled, cant open new account

I've read you can't change your name, but when I try and just abandon the account and create a new one, Microsoft says that email is already in use. This sucks big time.  I fat fingered my user name and I am not going to give that out to people.

FYI for any new Leopard installers... If you have a similar issue use the Tiger Discs. The included Leopard disc does NOT have the Erase(format disc) and Install feature. I've completed Leopard install and starting Tiger.. First install took 2hrs...
you must have a drop in version of the leopard DVD. Normal leopard DVDs certainly do have the erase and install option which is the default option, actually.
You can choose the kind of install you do by clicking on "Options" on the screen where you choose the destination drive.
the drop in leopard DVDs indeed require prior Tiger installation and only allow upgrade and install option.
I'm actually very confused by what happened to you. If you did manage to install leopard, what install option did you use?

  • Adding iPhoto'04 library to iPhoto'11 that already has a library

I have been running iPhoto'09 on my MBP for about 1.5 years and just installed iPhoto'11 and all appears to be fine with the 1500 or so pictures in the current iPhoto Library for iPhoto'11. I have about 4,000 pictures on an 6 year old G4 with iPhoto'04 that I want to put on the MBP.
Based on reading other posts I am in the process of copying the "iPhoto Library" folder from iPhoto'04 to another drive (it is currently being copied to a 8 GB USB drive as I type this message). Before this is copied from the USB drive into the Pictures folder on the MBP, should it be renamed to something different than "iPhoto Library" (ie. iPhoto 04 Library), since there is already an active "iPhoto Library" file (a Package File) in the Pictures folder? Once I have the iPhoto 04 Library file copied to the Pictures folder on the MPB, is the next step to launch iPhoto'11 with the option key pressed and select the iPhoto 04 Library? If I followed other discussions, this will then convert the iPhoto 04 Library to iPhoto'11 format.
After this is seems like iPhoto Library Manager would be a good way to work with the two libraries in order to arrange the pictures and albums as I like.
Thanks for any feedback or suggestions on the above process.

Hello TD -I solved the problem late last night before I saw your reply about using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library in question. Here is what I did. Note that I have been using iPhoto version 9.1.1 all along, so it was not an issue of library updates losing data that was initially reported by many users of the original 9.0 version.
    1. The library I had been using with iPhoto'09 was successfully updated when I initially upgraded to iPhoto'11, so all was fine with that. The problem was that iPhoto'11 was not able to update a library brought over from iPhoto'04 on my old G4 tower.
    2. After reading that some users were going back to iPhoto'09, I thought I might try that as a way to read the iPhoto'04 library. Deleted iPhoto'11 and associated package receipts from my MBP, but left the new iPhoto'11 library in the Pictures folder. Installed iPhoto'09 from the iLife'09 disk.
    3. Stared iLife'09 with the option key pressed and selected the iPhoto'04 library. Happy days - it opened the iPhoto'04 Library just fine and updated all the information (albums, titles, etc.) as it should. The library icon in the Picture folder was no longer an actual folder (as it was with iPhoto 4), but was now the iPhoto icon.
    4. Used the iLife'11 disk to update iLife'09 back to iLife'11 on the MBP. After this was completed I used Software Update to get version 9.1.1 of the software loaded before using the program. Started version 9.1.1 with the option key and selected the iPhoto'04 library that had been updated with iPhoto'09 and it was correctly updated to iPhoto'11 format with all the information intact.
    5. Problem resolved after getting helpful suggestions throughout the forum. While this process did not answer the problem about iLife'11 not being able to open the old iPhoto'04 library, the final solution worked just fine. I'll also be buying iPhoto Library Manger to help keep things in order, since I now have a library for the iPhoto'09 data that was updated and the second library for the iPhoto'04 library that was updated (there is also a 3rd library I'll bring in from my wife's MacBook).
TD - thanks for you time and for helping to narrow down the possible issues for this problem.
