Cant read my encrypted sent mail

I'm able to send encrypted mail and have the recipients read it without any problems, however I'm unable to read those mails in my send folder.  All I see is the smime.p7m attachment. I can also read encrypted mail sent to me by others without any problems.
Any ideas why I cant read my own encrypted mail?  Started happening after upgrading to Mavericks and adding a new mail certificate for myself didn't resolve the problem.

First, the address associated with the S/MIME public key must exactly match the address to which you're trying to send the encrypted message. The matching is case-sensitive. "[email protected]" does not match "[email protected]".
The recipient's certificate must be valid: not self-signed, expired, or revoked. You can check the status of the certificate in Keychain Access (see below.)
If you can't encrypt messages to a valid address with a valid certificate, continue.
Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
          Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ First Aid
If the box labeled Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
Select Keychain from the menu bar and repair the keychain.
Quit and relaunch Mail. Test. If the problem isn't resolved, continue.
Export all S/MIME certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
          Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
Test again. If the test fails, delete all the certificates again, then reinstall them from fresh copies.

The email provider you are using may require some certain plugins from Firefox. Some items are pre-installed with other browsers but Mozilla doesn't like to install items without your permission. So, this is why it is left up to you to download and install required items.

  • Sent Mail retrieval in Mail 1.3.11

My wife's has a PowerBook G4,and she cannot retrieve, read or do anything with her sent e-mails for months now.Everytime she clicks on a sent mail(in her sent mail mailbox) this is what she gets :
The message from Louise Vasvari <[email protected]> concerning “description of apt.” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
It wasn't like that ebfore,so we don't know what happened or what to do so that she can read and retrieve sent mails again?

  • IPhone 6+ refuses to send s/mime encrypted e-mails

    Hi,
i am experimenting with s/mime encryption of e-Mails on the iPhone 6+ ios 8.1 and got as far as being able to send signed e-Mails, but not encrypted e-Mails from the iPhone.
Encrpytion fails with the message "Verschlüsseln nicht möglich" (encryption not possible) in the e-mail header without telling me why this is not possible.
    Here is what i did:
-in addition to my existing e-Mail accounts i created an iCloud e-Mail account.
-for all accounts i got myself free Class 1- certificates from StartSSL.com.
-i added the certificates to my mac osx 10.6.8 and os x 10.9.5 keychains
-next i downloaded the iPhone configuration app v 3.5 (289) from Apple to my desktop mac running os x 10.6.8.
-i noticed that my keychain app shows the iPhone Configuration Utility certificate in red as not being trustworthy - i verified that i downloaded the latest version from Apple (support.apple.com/kb/DL1465) - i ignored the warning
-i connected my iPhone 6+ via usb cable to my mac and installed the certificates on the iPhone - i can see new Profiles with a green tick on the iPhone.
-i turned s/mime on (+default signing +default encryption) in my e-Mail account settings on the iPhone.
using Mail (os x 10.6.8 + 10.9.5) on my desktop macs i am able to send signed+encrypted e-Mails between my accounts.
I am also able to read the encrypted e-Mail on my iPhone on the non-iCloud accounts (i see the blue tick + blue lock). Trying to reply from the iPhone with an encrypted message results in the error described above - cannot encrypt.
Sending a signed+encrypted e-Mail to my iCloud account from one of my desktop macs makes it disappear in Nirwana - it is nowhere to be found. I also do not receive any returned message about any failure - i tried to send from securesmtp.t-online.de and smtp.gmail.com + another smtp server from Belgium - same result.
i turned iCloud keychain sync from off to on, thinking it might have something to do with the problem - same result.
    thanks for any tips
    Peter

i finally figured out the problem:
i thought that the public key would get installed automatically when receiving a signed e-Mail as happens with Mail on the desktop.
This is not the case. On the iPhone I have to click on the signature or lock of the received e-Mail that contains a public key. Then i need to open the received certificate and press the install button. That done, the public key is on my iPhone and i can return encrypted e-Mails.
This also means that the iPhone Configuration utility is still working for iPhone 6+ running ios 8.1 and that the information from Apple support, that i need to use the new Apple Configurator utility is wrong.

Didn't want to make you feel like an Idiot. Just pointing otu that most all externals come, these days, formatted NTFS as the world runs on Windows computers and at least the last 2 Win OS version will only install and likes to use NTFS formatted drives. So most drive manufacturers Pre-Format their drive in that format.
What do you mean "I'm Cloning Time Now"? I don't get the TIME reference?
You Clone the install of OS X from a working Mac to the External. The Cloning willl make that external Bootable (It will boot on like Mac computers).
Then when that is done disconnect that external and connect it to your Mac. Start your Mac and it should boot off that external. If it doesn't then Restart and hold down the Option key and select the external as the boot drive.
Once the your Mac starts from the external the cloning program should already by running as it was running whenn the clone was made. Select the external as the source and your internal as the destination. you may want to shut the cloning program down and first use Disk Utility to Re-Partition your drive as One Partition.
Hopefully that will get rid of the encryption you enabled and give you a clean freshly formatted drive to clone to.
Then start up the cloniing software and do as pointed out above.

  • Mail not being able to read inbox/sent mail??

    Hey guys,
I have a system that is running OS X 10.3.9 with Mail: 1.3.11 and it seems to constantly have issues reading the inbox and sent mail folders.
When I launch mail, it shows that I have messages in my inbox and my sent mail but when I go to click on the headers, nothing shows up in the preview screen. Rebuilding my mailboxes and also trying to re-import them into a different box does not help. When I try importing them, the file is not recognizable by the mail importer.
When I restore these mailboxes from back up, mail is able to read them for a few minutes, then it goes right back to the same issue.
Has anyone encountered this and know how to address it or can even tell me what it is?

    Hello,
I've same problem on Mac OS 10.2 system. Only in sent mail box.
Sent mail box appear empty but state bar says 782 messages.
Clicking on a ghost message show selection bar. Double click on subject and subject of message appears, same operation on date, sender...
    Inbox, junk mail work fine.
Other problem : Mail always crash down when I quit application (Application does not respond).
Sure I've repaired files permission, delete preference file, rebuild mail boxes but problem still here.
    Someone can help me ?

  • Reading Sent mail and mail stored in folders from "On My Mac" on my ipad

On my MBP, I use Mail for both personal mail and business mail. I have two accounts set up in Mail. Mobile Me for personal mail (imap) and a pop3 account for my business mail. The Sent folder has copies of mail sent from both accounts. For my business mail I have a number of folders ("Mailboxes") set up that I move my inbox mail to when I want to save a particular email (I like to keep my inbox clean). These folders are stored under "On My Mac" on my MBP. I understand from reading previous posts that I cannot create folders on the ipad unless I create them on my MBP using my imap mobile me account, which I am not going to do for business. Is there any way for me to be able to have access to (i.e., read them from the Mail program on the ipad) the emails and their attachments that I currently have in my Sent folders and in the "On My Mac" folders?
Alternately, is there a way to copy all those emails and keep them synced with another app that would let me access them from the ipad? So much of my detail info for my ongoing business is on emails and not just word, excel, pwrpoint files (those I can upload and keep in sync with mobile me or Dropbox and access them when I need them) that being able to truly leave my MBP home for several days and only use the ipad is now questionable.
    Thanks

From Contacts, anyway (the new version of Address Book) you can export to a .abbu file and import then into Outlook. I'm not sure about Mail as I only really use Outlook...

  • I want to read my sent mail in iPhone

In my mail client in OSX,  I have a mailbox called 'Sent'. I can find no such mailbox on iPhone/iPad.
    Why?

Thanks, Mr. Razmee, for a rapid response.
    A little history:
In PC days I had resident e-mail on my PC from local phone company server. They sold us out to Google. Then I cancelled that accoiunt and got new iPhones for myself and my wife.
I felt good to move our main e-mail to icloud. I wanted to continue to mutate into an Apple family. My wife's iPad was set up with a nice resident mail, with a list of mailboxes, including Sent.
When the Apple support person set up the iCloud account, she said I had to use an existing (or made up) e-mail. I gave one I set up some time ago only to deflect Facebook stuff to and keep out of our regular mail. That sent all Apple mails to that one instead of our new iCloud mail.
Here is how it is now. Our iOS devices are set up with 2 e-mails. They are displayed without indicating where they came from. They can be answered, etc. without 'using' one account or another. I'm fine with that. I'm in a happy coccoon able to write back and forth with those who feel they must use yahoo and the ones I write to in iCloud. The sent mailbox in Mac & iPad is right there below the inbox. I am fine with that.
I'm not happy that in iPhone, I have to go on a goose hunt to find my sent mail.
    Hope that makes sense.

  • Problem Reading Sent Mail

    Hi There,
When I try to read my sent mail on my computer @ work (20" iMac G5 2GHz; OS X 10.3.9), I see the following message instead of the email I sent:
+The message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.+
Trouble is that the account is online when I get the message. Also, I've got the prference set to delete messages from my ISP's server once they're downloaded.
If I quit Mail & re-open it, I can read one sent mail but have to quit again & re-open Mail again to read another.
    Any help is appreciated.

You'll probably get a more informed answer if you post in the [Panther Mail|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=740] section of Discussions.

  • Sent Mail, Won't Read

When I'm online and try to access my sent emails this is the message that appeares where the sent email body should be:
The message from XXX <[email protected]> concerning XXX has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
The thing is, is I am already online. This issue has gradually developed. I used to be able to access my sent mail no problem. Then I started getting this message. At first I could resolve it by rebooting mac mail. When That no longer worked I would resolve it by rebooting the computer. Now nothing works. All other functions in mac mail seem to work fine. I currently have 61 messages in the sent file.
I recently ran fsck and it said everything seemed to be OK.
    I'm running a 1.8 gig single processor G5 with OS 10.3.9, and mail 1.3.11 (V622/624).
    Thank you,

Since the account's Sent mailbox is well over the recommended mailbox size limit for Panther Mail and remains 1.7 GB in size, the messages remain in the mailbox.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Sent Messages.mbox.
Move the Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when sending the next message with the account.
This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new messages sent with this account while trying to recover the existing messages in the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop.
Send me an email and I'll forward you an mbox breaker script that splits such a mailbox into smaller sections. There is no guarantee with this script but it has worked well for others. If this doesn't work, the messages will be lost.
My email address is allan underscore sampson at mac.com

  • Why are security headers not visible when viewing "sent" mail for mail sent with S/MIME certificates?

I am using an S/MIME certificate to sign my emails using Mail on Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  I have a trusted S/MIME certificate for each of my email accounts.  The certs and private keys are properly installed in the keychain.  I am able to successfully send signed (and optionality encrypted) email and the recipients are all all receiving the emails showing a trusted signed email without having to acknowledge or trust the signature.  So technically the certificates are working.  Obviously the encryption option is only offered when I also have the recipients certficate in my keychain.
What I am noticing is that when I look in my sent items - (regardless of which email I used as the "sender") - I don't see any indication in the mail headers that the mail was sent with a signed certificate - even though I know the recipient is seeing that the mail is signed with a cert.  I have no way of telling whether I sent the mail as "signed" or "unsiged".  The default is to use the certificate for all outbound emails - unless I specifically uncheck the secure signing option before sending.  In mail that I recieve - sent from others with certs or sent from one of my email accounts to the other - I see the the certificate indication in the email header.
On rare occasion - I do see the certificate when viewing sent mail - but only for  random sent mails - and so far I believe I have only seen the certificate show up in mail that is sent from my iCloud account.  I can send subsequent mail from iCloud - and still not see the certificate in the sent items.
Why am I not seeing the Security Header showing the certificate when viewing mail that I have sent in my sent items folder?  Is there some setting that I am not seeing that controls this - or is this a bug in Mac Mail?  Also why does the security header show up for just a handful of sent emails - when hundreds of signed emails have been successfully sent.
Any help would be appreciated.  The behavior is the same on my other Macs - at least the ones on which the certificates are also installed.
Also - I don't have my certs installed on my iPhone yet - so I can't tell on the iPhone if the certs are showing up in the sent folder - but I can see the certs on mail that I send to myself from the Mac but receive on the iPhone.
    ~Scott

I stopped using the S/MIME certs and stopped signing my emails.  Too many recipients were receiving them as "attachements" especially if the recipients email account was on an Exchange server.  My certs have since expired and I have not done anything to further analyze the situation.  My original post was over a year ago and I have long since been on Mavericks.
To: iddontknowwhoiamsowhat ... I am not totally following your response.  You say you are seeing the exact same issue - yet you are also saying you can look at the sent mails from os x and ios - does this mean that you see the security badges on the sent emails in both os x and ios?  I assume you are on Mavericks?
