Cant see External USB on network via Apple Airport Extreme (XP) - FIXED!!!

Hello,
I started this post many, many months ago that has now been archived
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7796850#7796850
and finally I've solved the problem!!!
I tried everything to share my external USB HDD over my home network through my Apply Airport Extreme, but couldn't get it to work!!!
I have a mac and PC, with the PC being closest to the DSL modem so I installed the Airport utility on the PC to configure it.. that was my mistake!! ..I fixed the issue my installing the utility on my Mac and configuring it from there.. now it works great!! - I can Access my hdd from anwhere on the network - and as a bonus, I have managed to copy files direct from my mac to my shared files folder in windows!!
I hope this helps someone!!

"so you can't use ethernet or wireless to connect the printer?"
There is no Ethernet port on the HP printer, nor does it have a wireless card; it is not a "network ready" printer, just a USB printer. I connected the printer to the network via a USB cable from the printer to the Airport Extreme. All the systems on the network can see the printer, show it as the default printer, but they can't print to it. When I was using the Airport Express as a print server, the printer was connected to the Express via its USB port and the Express was connected to the Linksys router via an Ethernet cable. In this scenario, everything worked perfectly, I could print from my wireless and wired systems with no problems at all.
Your printer has wireless capablities so has an IP adress. Does a USB printer have an IP address? I don't think so, but if it does, please tell me how to find out what it is - maybe that is my problem; I didn't need this info when I was using the Express as a print server. (Maybe I just need to buy another Express and use it as a print server and forget about using the USB port on the Extreme...defeats the purpose of getting the Extreme in the first place, but at least I could stop wasting my time with all of this!)

  • Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

  • 802.11n networking via new airport extreme to airport express/ airtunes

Have been trying to include an airport express in my new 802.11n/ new airport extreme network, using new airport utility. Does not seem to work yet manuals/ the support site do not seem to rule this out. I would just like to stream itunes to remote powered speakers via airport express. Can I do this or do I have to wait for a "new" 802.11n airport express to be produced?
    Thanks!
macbook (black)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't have much experience in this area, but I can assure it's supposed to be able to work together seamlessly. So no you should have to wait.
Have you tried basic troubleshooting? (repair permissions, reinstall software, reboot, etc.)

  • Only ONE external hd shows up via my airport extreme.

I have them both plugged into a powered usb hub, and that connected to the back of the airport extreme.
Only one hd will show up. . . any ideas???
Thanks so much for the help.

Yes, I did format both drives with Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I can see drive A if it's plugged in by itself, or I can see drive B if IT's plugged in by itself, but I can only see one if both are plugged into the powered usb hub.???
    Any other ideas?
Thank you so much for the response.

  • HT204057 Time machine back up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme.

Why did Apple stop supporting time machine back-up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme?  It worked very well.

Why did Apple stop supporting time machine back-up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme?
Time Machine backups are supported via USB hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme"ac" version.
Time Machine backups were not supported via USB hard drive connected to earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Some users who tried this on earlier version AirPort Extremes seemed to have some success with Time Machine backups....some had moderate success and some had no success with this. Count me in the "no success" category.

  • Multiple duplicate prints via apple airport and bonjour printer driver on HP Color Laserjet 1600

Please advise if this request will incur any costs as I have exhausted all self-help resources and articles in your knowledge base. Nothing applies to my issue. I used to be able to use this printer via USB or wireless network using apple airport base station and bonjour printer driver. When my company ugraded to Windows 7, USB seems to work ok and wireless under same setup works too, but each page prints out many duplicates >40 duplicates when in wireless state. I am also trying to print from my IPAD and this does not seem to work at all. If you tell me this printer will not perform, please just be honest and let me know. I don't mind buying another printer if needed but don't want to incur more high level cartridge costs (bought many due to duplicate issue) and could afford the new printer instead. Deciding between brother or hp depending on usable feedback here. Using Lenovo T410 for all that matters...Thank you, Marc

Unfortunately, without knowing the model of the printer I wont be able to let you know too much information on the issue or how to resolve it. Also, when you upgrade your OS you often have to update the programs you are using, I would recommend uninstalling the printer and using the software available on http://goo.gl/7R6HT.
    Let me know Marc!

  • How to move external hard drive (time machine) off airport extreme network?

For several years now, I've had an external hard drive connected to my airport extreme and it's servered as an awesome external back-up of my Macbook via Time Machine.  However, now I've had to remove the external hard drive from my network (that's a whole other story).  Anyway, when I connect the external hard drive to my MacBook, it doesn't recongize it as my Time Machine back-up. It is still looking for "My Book" on my network, which obviously doesn't exist anymore.  Can I simply re-direct it to "my book" that is now connected via USB to my computer?  Do I have to start over?  If possible, I'd like to keep the back-ups I already had and simply continue with my new back-ups.  Please advise!  Thanks!

First thing to do is go to the Pondini tips page, then follow the link to his full TM site for all the details.

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

  • I am having problems printing from my iPad via my AirPort Extreme network.

I am having no success printing from my iPad via my AirPort Extreme based local network. I can use this to print wirelessly from my iMac OS X 10.7.5 and MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8. I have 2 printer options: HP Laserjet (B&W) P1005 hard-wired to the iMac and HP Photosmart 7760 hard-wired to the AirPort Extreme. I believe I have checked all the correct boxes to enable the network and the iPad to connect, including ensuring that it is using the same network but when I try to select a printer I get the message that no printer can be found. Will it not work with an AirPort Extreme based network or only if this is connecting to wirelessly enabled printers which I do not have.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,
Apple's AirPrint only support specific models while using wired or wireless network connection.
Plugging a printer into a USB port of Apple base is not supported for AirPrint:
AirPrint printers connected to the USB port of the Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsules are not supported with AirPrint.
As well you must use AirPrint enabled printers for a such, none of your printers are AirPrint enabled:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
There are 3rd party solutions which allow sharing a printer connected to your Mac as AirPrint, Printopia as example provide a such:

  • Best usb hub for Apple Airport Extreme base station

Hi all does any one know which usb hub is the best to use with the apple airport extreme the 8.11n version?
Im aware i need a powered usb hub ideally im lookin for a 7 port hub and i think also its needs to be plug and play rather than needing a driver to be installed as this feature is not available on the router,
I read in another forum that the (macally usb hub) would work but wondering if anyone had any experience with this as i know some do not work fo ex. the one ive just bought and some are faster than others any info anyone has on this matter wi ll be greatly appreshed thanks in advanced

if i have a quicktime movie stored in the USB external hard drive and if i run that movie over the "connection" via the new airport extreme... would the movie by "choppy" or would it be as smooth as if the external hard-drive connected directly to computer?
Sorry, things like this are not possible to predict in advance since there are so many variables involved. But, your chances of a smooth connection will improve using "n" wireless speeds with the computer close to the wireless router.
I would not recommend trying to store images on a drive that is accessed only by wireless.  My strong preference for any kind of video or image file storage is to have the drive hard wired to the computer and/or router.

  • Creating my home network, Apple Airport Extreme & Sky

    Hello all,
Hoping somebody can help, I’m attempting to set up a network in my home that works a bit like this.
Ok, we’ve had sky broadband for a few months now and have the new grey Sagem router to go with it. I also have the new Apple Airport Extreme station (and an Oldish BTHomehub v1.5, the white one… just kicking about incase its useful!)
What I want to achieve is use Time Machine on my Macbook Pro to wirelessly backup over the network to a Hard Drive plugged into the AE. I want the AE to be upstairs away from the sky router and I also want to be able to plug Ethernet devices into the AE to use the internet (somehow acquired from the router downstairs I assume) like an Xbox, laptop or anything else I might need really).
*Its important to me that the AE isn’t downstairs in the same room as the router, otherwise I would just connect it with a cable and create a wireless network from that.
On top of that (stay with me….) if the AE has the functionality to extend the wireless network further to hit the low signal spots that would help.
I’ve been reading around the internet and various support sites. I know a little about this stuff but I’m not an expert on networking, I know nothing about the different signals N, g, b etc or how IP assigning works. I read a little about WDS networking but I’m not sure which direction to head.
This is probably the closest thing I’ve found to what I’m talking about, If the bottom hub was the sky router and the top hub was the Apple AE.
    http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/repeaterhubs.html
    Appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

The best way by far is to run ethernet as a kind of backbone between the two stories.. on one storey setup the AE and the other you setup the TC.
I have no idea if one is the main router or not.. or both are bridged.. that doesn't really matter.. the principle is.. one router per network. So whichever is not the main router change to bridge mode.
Both should create a wireless network. You can use roaming setup, where both use identical names and identical security. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4260

  • HT5566 How do I see the devices attached to my network through my airport extreme router?

I can't find a way to see the addresses of all the devices connected to my Airport Extreme base station over ethernet.  I can see the wifi clients attached to the Extreme and to each Airport Express in the network.  But I don't see any of the 15+ other ethernet-connected devices.  There does not seem to be any interface that get me to this list of devices or allows me to inspect or monitor their settings.  What am I missing?  How can you manage a network with this router without this capability?

can't find a way to see the addresses of all the devices connected to my Airport Extreme base station over ethernet.
There is no way to do this in AirPort Utility 6.x versions since Apple removed the DHCP logs.
Let Apple know if you like the "upgraded" AirPort Utility 6.x versions.

  • Guest Network access issue on Apple Airport Extreme 802.11AC router and Actiontec MI424WR Rev.1

I contacted Apple because I am not able to create any guest Network on my Airport Extreme because I was told that my modem needs to be simple.  Per Apple: "The Guest Network feature will not operate correctly unless your "main" AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem........not a modem/router (such as the  Actiontec MI424WR Rev.1) or gateway type of device that is often furnished by Internet Service Providers to their customers."
So is it possible to make this version of Actiontec a simple modem. Is this even possible or will I need a new modem?
NOTE: I disabled the wireless functionality of the actiontec.

Do you have FiOS TV ? You can completely bridge the ActionTec or take it out of the equation entirely if you don't have TV to worry about. Or, you can make the Apple router your primary and put the ActionTec behind it, with the trade-off that things like Remote DVR and Caller ID on TV won't work the best.
