  • Internal MBP HD up as external - cant see Admin user

    Woke up to my Macbook Pro a couple weeks ago sitting in a puddle of water. Fried. Went to Apple Store and had them take out internal hard drive and bought an external case for it. They said the HD looked ok and was worth a shot.
    Today I finally found an iMac to hook it up to and after an extended wait the drive mounted and I was able to access it. Everything looks to be fine -woot- except that the Admin / Primary user account no longer shows up in the /Users/ folder (the 3 other user accounts do show up however).
    What on earth? Has anyone ever seen / heard of such a thing? I am able to get files from the drive and view everything - but no admin account (which is of course where everything I need is). Any help GREATLY applreciated.

    It's possible that the event resulted in the data loss from the drive. I suggest you see the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
    If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
    If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
    If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
    The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Windows OS; authorized ADE in administrator; cant read as user account

    I have problems with this program, as if it does not see multi-users in the same computer. You are supposed to install programs as administrators and do regular tasks like read a book in a user account. I installed and authorized ADE in administrator. I authorized the book in adminstrator. Then found the book in the folder. In a user account; opened ADE and tried to read the book. ADE said it is authorized to a different user. Does this program want me to redownload the book as user account and delete and unauthorize the first download?

    Now the book has been accessed it is locked to the Adobe account/ID in use at the time (eg the Adobe account you registered for Administrator).
    You can't change authorization on the book itself once it has been accessed (unless you make another purchase/loan or some special arrangement with the vendor).
    The registration/authorization is separate for each user (this may not be convenient in your case but is convenient for many situations).
    What you need to do is go through the authorization process again on the user account, using the same Adobe ID you used on the Administrator account.
    ~~~
    Copying in a problem people sometimes have below, just in case it might save the time of an extra interaction in this thread  ...
    ignore this unless you fine you can't go through the authorization process on the user account.
    Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
    Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help, and indeed installation can even trigger this state.
    Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
    A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
    Another is  "E_AUTH_NOT_READY"
    This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
    Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
    In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people.  Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. If you are using 10.7, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1265248?tstart=0
  • Cant create new user account
    I have migrated my accounts from my old G5 to new Mac Pro and they all work just fine. However when I try to create a new user account for my youngest daughter whilst everything appears to be fine on creation when i try to switch between my admin acount and her account with the correct password (less than 8 characters) all I get is the starscape with no icons, no dock, no mouse! The only way out I can find is to completely reboot the mac from the power button on the front (power down and power up again).
    I have tried deleting and recreating different accounts all with the same result. The original 3 accounts that migrated all work OK.
    Well repairing permissions made no difference. But the problem seemed to lay with parental controls, when i made some changes to that in the new acc it worked but will only work with with basic desktop
  • Macintosh HD read only?? Cant see any user files???
    Was working on a late 2009 iMac/OS 10.6 the other day with the oddest problem. Apparently my friend was updating to 10.6.7 and the iMac kernel panicked on him. It left the mac unable to boot. Booted from the DVD and ran disk utility, the drives index and b-tree catalogs were messed up and Disk Utility could not repair it. It told me to back up my files and reformat.
    Ok not a problem there, I had a 3tb HDD hooked up and attempted to just cp -R the entire User folder from the Macintosh HD to the firewire hdd. Only took like a second to copy and what do you know there were no files in the folder at all. I guessed it had something to do with permissions being wierd since I was booted from the dvd so I installed 10.6 onto the firewire drive and booted off that. I can see the internal drive just fine, and Finder even says that the Users folder is 78gb, but his user folder is completely empty when you look into it. Its completely missing any sort of read permissions so you cant even view the files in the directory. I can see the top level username folder but nothing inside.
    I tried to use chmod (and even sudo chmod) to change the entire folders permissions to 777 but terminal just tells me the drive is 'read only' and I cant change anything. My last step I did was basically used Disk Utility to make a dmg of his internal hd and copied it to the external since I had to format his internal drive and get things working. I did check Ignore Ownership On This Volume but that didnt help either. It wont even let me mess with the users permissions that the drive has at all, theyre all greyed out.
    Now inside the dmg, I STILL have the same problem of having 78gb in his user folder that I cant do anything with at all, or even see for that matter.
    Is there ANYTHING I can try that I havent yet that will allow me to get to his files? Its a bunch of ProTools stuff so its rather important to him. I guess worst case scenario I can try and restore the dmg to a drive or just mount it, and just look at it over the network with a Windows machine.. Would that work or is there something I can do to keep it all done on the Mac itself??
    Just to clarify — have you actually tried to load tracks into your Shuffle, using either Autofill or by dragging music or playlists to it in the Source list?
    I don't understand you characterize what you tried as a 'mistake'. I use my iPS in just that way and have changed back and forth several times, i.e., from all tracks to all data to mixes of both, with zero problems. It clearly works, and is far from 'useless' for carrying data.
    The Shuffle has to be mounted and connected, of course, with iPod > Preferences available. Uncheck the "Disk Use" box and reset the slider, then click on Save. You will normally be able to Autofill from that point, as I did just last evening, slotting in the next 100-odd tracks of music.
    OTOH, I have also seen your 'stuck' storage indication one time before. In my case it happened right after I tried using a friend's old laptop PC as a recharging station, which resulted in some other unusual indications from the Shuffle. I eventually had to Restore iot 'regain' the lost memory, and that is the same fix that has been reported as successful by others in this forum.
    I can't quite follow your last para. on your own attempts at restoring. If you are doing it according to the Apple instructions and guidance (see the iPod Shuffle Support Page, among other sources) then that would have told you to use a current iPod Updater program and would have given you the exact steps to use.
  • Can't "see" User account name in the GUI anymore ...
    Hello Community
        Using WS2012 I created user account in AD.  I right clicked a user account and chose "Move".
        The problem is my finger slipped and hit other keys.
        Now I can't see the user account anymore.
        When I run the following command:
            get-aduser -filter 'Name -like "user1"'  I get the results below:
                DistinguishedName : CN=user1,DC=<DomainName>,DC=<SomeName>,DC=us
        The problem is how can I "see" what folder name, OU or the group's name that user1 resides at in
    the GUI?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut
    If I understand well, you were able to get the user DN. Based on the name, the user account should be directly under your domain (Not under an OU or a Container). So, use ADUC and select your domain. Once done, you should be able to see the user account.
  • How to best restore lost User Accounts after server crash?
    Our late 2005 G5 froze sometime overnight in the middle of a Time Machine backup.  We had to do a hard reboot the next morning.
    When OS X Server 10.5.8 came back up, none of our users could log in including our administrator accounts.  Unable to log in as root, we used the utility on the installation disc to reset the root password.  We were able to log in as root to see that our data and server disks still were intact and navigable.  However, we could not see any user accounts defined.  We then were able to log in as Server Administrator.  Same thing.
    We are unfamiliar with restoring anything from Time Machine backups other than user files.  Is there a way to restore user accounts from Time Machine and how?
    More info: we tried restoring some system files and the library folder but no luck.  Not sure how to go about restoring Keychain if that got corrupted...We had about 10 accounts defined before the crash.
    Carl
    I believe the easiest approach would be:
    - Install the same OS on the new servers
    - Install OS pre-req software and packages for your EBS instance
    - Restore from cold backup (if the crash happened directly after this backup and you haven't lost any data)
    OR,
    - Restore from hot backup (if the crash happened after your cold backup and you have data that wasn't part of the cold backup)
    I assume that no changes to the hostname, domainname, IP Address, port numbers, directory structure, ..etc is taking place in this restore.
    Thanks,
    Hussein
  • HT4889 Used migration assistant to move from Lion to Mountain Lion and an entire user account did not move over.
    The user name (account) was the same on the source and the new computer. Is this why the data could not move over? I did not see this user account in the list of users presented by migration assistant. Thought it was default so that is why it wasn't shown. I can move the data over manually, but this was a surprise. Any feedback on why this happened?
    I migrated Office 2011 and other than forcing me to enter the license code again (all 2 million letters of it) everything went OK.
    Note that when I tried to open Parallels desktop 6 it wouldn't open and said that it wasn't compatible with Mountain Lion and the icon had a sort of greyed out look. I upgraded to 8 and it started working. I wonder if there is any issue with Office 2008 and Mountain Lion? Probably not but it's a possibility.
    You can buy an external superdrive too from Apple. I bought one for my 2010 Air. But CD sharing from another computer should work. I bring it with me when I travel to watch DVDs.
  • Strange User account called "other" appeared
    Hi there,
    I've got a question.
    Since several weeks when I start my mac and type my account password I can see an user account called "other" (andere in German/using OS X in German)
    I never created such an user account but it's there.
    When I try to open the user account it asks me for a name and a password.
    Could somebody tell me where this account comes from?
    Thanks:-)
    The Guest account settings is not set for Sharing ?
    The sharing itself can be set up in System Preferences > Sharing and then File Sharing.
  • Can't find user account when trying to delete
    I'm using an iMac computer.
    And the problem I'm having is the following:
    I'm trying to delete an user account from my computer following the steps from apple.
             http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/nl/8163.html
    So at step 3 they say I have to click on the user account I want to delete.
    But I cannot see the user account in the list.
    It is the only account with an password, but that person doesn't know the password even with the clues for it.
    Besides that I currently don't have the option to contact him.
    I am the main user so I hope it shouldn't be a problem.
    Does anyone know a solution for my problem?
    Or did anyone had the same problem?
    My thanks in advance!
    'Other' is the Root account - it shouldn't be enabled.
  • Create User Account Using Terminal in OSX 10.9.5
    I am working on creating a shell script to create a specific user on all Mac computers at work. I have run the following commands in Terminal with no luck:
    dscl . create /Users/myuser
    dscl . create /Users/myuser RealName "My User"
    dscl . passwd /Users/myuser UsersPW
    dscl . create /Users/myuser UniqueID 561
    dscl . create /Users/myuser PrimaryGroupID 1000
    dscl . create /Users/myuser NFSHomeDirectory /Users/administrator
    dscl . create /Users/myuser UserShell /bin/bash
    dscl . append /Groups/admin GroupMembership administrator
    I have seen in the discussions that running these commands has enabled some to log in using the user account they created - they just can't see the user account in the Users list in Sys Prefs. I can't see my user account, log into my computer with it, or see a user folder at /Users/myuser. I AM able to see the user after running the dscl command and cd Local/Users/myuser - but with an ls that directory is empty. What am I missing?
    In terminal I am using the root user. I've tried logging in with sudo su and sudo -s. All commands run, but no account is created.
    If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.
    I don't really understand your reply, but since asking my question I realized that if, rather than choose 'New Image' inside the Disk Utility window, I use the menu bar at the top of the screen, and select File > New > Blank Disk Image,  then I get the choices I hoped for. It's all in looking in the right place, I guess, but I do wonder why those choices are not available when you choose 'New Image' within the Disk Utility window. Oh well.
  • User Account problem
    I have just installed Filemaker Server on my Mac OSX Mountain Lion and it says that it created a User Account called 'fmserver User'. Opening Workgroup Manager I can see the user account, but going to System Preferences > Users and Groups, it is not listed under the Users. If I try to create a new Account called 'FMServer' it says this account with this name already exists, yet I can't see it. Anyone know why fmserver User doesn't come up in Users. I can't even delete it if I wanted to.
    Whatever the other problems with Filemaker, you may have seen in wgm that there are many users & groups which do not appear in 'Users & Groups' of System Preferences, that's normal.
    I don't use filemaker, but from here it seems that what you describe is also expected.
    The fmserver user is no longer displayed as a user in the Mac OS X Lion login window.
  • Missing user accounts in system preference pane 10.6.1?
    (I hope this isn't posted under another topic already..)
    After reading a post on another site about missing user data in Snow Leopard (http://bit.ly/3wf3v7), I decided to do a little digging on my own machine to see if I'm experiencing any of the same issues..
    First of all I'm not readily experiencing any particular bugs since upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1, but I did notice the following:
    -my usual admin user account (me) did not show any other user accounts on the machine in the system preference pane.
    -I have fast user switching on, and when I select it the account name at the upper right corner of the screen, it shows all of the accounts that the sys pref pane does not.
    -a quick look at my finder reveals on the root level that all of my user accounts are intact as well.
    -I switched to another admin account on the machine, and it loaded up fine– upon opening the sys pref on the other admin account, I was able to see all of the other active accounts on the machine in the accounts pane.
    -note: the guest account is deactivated, and I've not logged into a guest account since upgrading to 10.6.1.
    So my question is: why doesn't my primary user account (obviously an admin account) see the other active accounts in my sys pref accounts pane, but my other admin accounts do? Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll need to make account changes from my user account in regards to the other user accounts and I'll need that functionality at that point.
    -note: I've lost no data to my knowledge and I have a TM backup drive active.
    Any thoughts from my fellow Mac Geniuses?
    Creating an account named abc did not bring back my previous accounts. I had installed Snow Leopard on my iMac several months ago. My hard drive was damaged by SnowLeopard family pack install disk that I was using to update my daughter's Macbook on Friday. When I opened my Mac in target disk mode, there was no system folder on the hard drive. I started to install 10.5.8 so I could use my iMac-didn't get it finished before going to work. Bought a new Snow Leopard install disk on the way home, cancelled the uncompleted install of 10.5.8, and the iMac booted up like a new machine.
    All my files are there, but the only user available is the one created while booting up. Migration assistant doesn't see the user accounts on the iMac hard drive.
