Intermittent or inconsistent situations as you describe are the most difficult to resolve.  First step you should do is be certain that you have your data backed up.  I suggest that you do this by creating a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The advantage to this is that not only is it a backup but can immediately be used to run your MBP in the event of an internal HHD failure.
The article that I gave you to start your search contains a link to this article:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
Though lengthy, it can resolve most issues if you go through all of the sections.  If you cannot achieve success, then an Apple store genius bar is the last option.
    Ciao.

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

  • HDMI to Macbook Pro audio issue - help??

I've just bought a mini displayport to HDMI cable to connect my Macbook Pro up to my tv. When I play stuff through the internet (ie. YouTube) I hear audio, but there's no sound when trying to play a movie from my external HD... help anyone?

I've got a Mac OS X version 10.7.5.  When I play something such as a clip from YouTube from the internet there is sound through the TV, but no, not when playing something from the external or the laptop hard drives.  I've got a separate audio cable which I'm now using to make up for it, I'm just confused as to why I have to.  I'm playing videos through VLC which I consider to be a pretty **** good media player.

  • Can't log into my XP machine from MacBook Pro using GoToMyPC - Help Please?

I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" and am having trouble logging into the the computer at my office (Dell Machine XP Pro). I've used the service for quite some time now so it's not that I am new to the web based service.
    Here's what happens:
I sign into my account at the GoToMyPC.com website with my username & password without problem. The website shows that my Dell machine is "on line" as normal. When I click onthe Connect button, the the Safari window resizes (universal viewer?) and looks like it starts to load. However, within a few seconds, I get the spinning beachball of death. I've tried to let it sit there for as long as 10 minutes with no change. I have to force quick Safari because it's "not responding"
Here's what I think I know and the steps I've taken thus far...
I know that the service is working because I am able to log in from my wife's laptop ( HP - Windows XP home) from the same home wireless network that MacBook is connected to. That also rules out (I think??!!) any issues with the wireless network in my home.
I don't believe that there is any inherrent problem using a Mac to log in using the GoToMyPC service since I tried it on several different computers in the Apple Store without any issues whatsoever.
I talked with GoToMyPC tech support and they they it seems like a Java problem. However, it seems that I have the latest Java plug-ins in my Applications/Utilities/Java folder (1.3.1 & 1.4.2). Other than that suggestion they weren't much help.
I called AppleCare and they had me set up a test user account with no other changes to settings, etc... No help. They then had me re-install the OS from the original discs. No Help and know I have a folder called "previous systems" on my HD taking up 10 Gig. Can I just delete this folder or have I now opened up another can or worms?
I've poked around the security settings in the system prefs panel - but nothing juped out at me as a pssible soltion so I didn't change anything.
I'm at my wits end - I need this to work and can't figure out why it isn't.
    Anybody got any ideas???
MacBook Pro 17" - 2 Gig Ram - 120 Gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   OS 10.4.7 on the "previous system"

Glad to hear that you found it.
Unfortunately, when we try to help folks...we usually stumble around for ideas, especially when we don't have the "whole picture". Your router/modem security setup was the wild card.
In your case, it was particularly odd that wife's PC could get out to Citrix through the router's firewall, but Mac couldn't.
But I'd be willing to bet that there's a FAQ section at GoToMyPC, that will explain this for you. But when you're up to your ears in alligators...well you know the rest
(Do you have a firewall running on both the Motorola and on the wireless router? Or don't you have a router, as such, and the network is provided using just the Motorola? Something to think about. Two firewalls are not necessarily better than one).
no reply needed...just glad you're "in".

  • After i updated to ios6 i cant send or recieve picture messages?! help please

I recently updated to IOS6 and now i cant send or recieve picture messages unless im using imessage. But then when i do use imessage it send messages as my email not as my phone number....what is going on?!

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
        1.    Update to the latest version of iTunes.
        2.    Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
        3.    Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
        4.    Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.

        6.    Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.

  • Itunes crashing on macbook pro... help please!

I just purchased a new macbook pro and itunes is giving me issues. It continues to crash every time I open it. I've un-installed and re-installed it numerous times but nothing changes. It crashes within minutes of being opened whether I'm trying to import music or access the store or just click on a playlist... I haven't been able to do anything on it.
Any advice?! I would really appreciate the help!
    Thanks.

try running software update from the  menu and install any updates offered (repair permissions before and after).
    also, try this:
quit iTunes. move the following file to the desktop: <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/library/preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
fire up iTunes (which will create a new .plist file). if it works now you can trash the plist file you moved to the desktop.

While 4GB may have been fine with Snow Leopard or Lion, that was 4 years ago.
If you have never done a clean install consider doing one. Backup, clone, setup a USB installer and wipe the system. Or wait for the new internal 500GB drive (so you are back to using about 50%) to do a clean install and run Setup Assistant. You would be surprised how even just that can feel and run.
RAM is pretty much a given so when you do, look at putting a 500GB SSD in there as well.

  • Burning software on Macbook Pro -- easy question, help please!

    Hi,
sorry to sound like a bit of a retard....
I am about to get a Macbook Pro (I am a mac virgin, switching from PC) and i was just wondering if Macbook Pro comes with a burning program included? and if so, what it is called?
    Thanks very much,
    Ani

Yes, the MacBook Pro comes with a program called "Disk Utility". It can burn CDs and DVDs. You can do it also via the Finder, the Mac OS X "explorer" - in Windows world it's called Windows Explorer.
Don't forget you can also install Windows on your MacBook Pro, and use PC burning software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Very poorly MacBook Pro, Can you help please?

I have recently ungrade my Macbook pro to OS Lion (about 3 weeks ago) it has been running with no problems. Two days ago it started running very slow, slow to start up (up to 14 mins!) and slow to load app and web pages. I checked CPU useage and mdworker was using lots of power. On the advice I found somewhere on here I made another user and deleted the previous one and all seemed to be ok for a few hours. However the MacBook started to slow up again, although the CPU seemed to be ok this time. I made a USB Lion recovery disc as per the apple support and verified the disc (and repaired it too just in case) all was ok and it reported no problems... Macbook still very poorly however so I thought maybe reinstalling OS Lion and starting again might solve the problem... But now it's stuck on the apple start up screen with the spinning wheel, running the fan and getting very hot. I have turned it off and periodicaly back on again to see if it will sort itself out :-(
Any help advice on what to do next greatly appreicated.
    Many thanks

If you're selling or giving away the computer, throw any files which may contain sensitive data in the Trash and securely empty it.
Restart from the computer's original disks(or the recovery partition if it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer), use the Disk Utility to erase the drive, and install a new OS.

  • 10.5.7 - VGA connection to LCD TV on new MacBook Pro dead. HELP PLEASE!

    I don't have a clue what's gone on here.
Just downloaded the latest update and the connection to my TV has gone mental. It changes the resolution on my MacBook screen to something ridiculous and doesn't properly connect to the TV screen.
Obviously, this is because of the new update is there anyway of going back to 10.5.6? I want to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm on my big screen!
PS I've only recently moved to Mac so could any advice be idiot proof.
    Thanks

Hi - Update for anyone that is interested. I've had a play around...
I went into System Preferences/Display and connected the TV.
The resolution still changed but I went to 'Arrangement' and deselected 'Mirror Displays' (10.5.7 to thank for that) My screen on the MacBook returned to its normal resolution but the TV was still not working.
I selected 'Display' and then 'Gather Windows' and on the TV's Display changed the resolution to 1600x1024 instead of the one 10.5.7 assigned.
Bingo! It's all back up and running!
Wish I didn't have to spend 20 mins on the phone to Apple though with no solution - that'll be added to my student phone bill! ARGH!

  • 2 questions about my Macbook Pro 17 laptop, help please.

First, I cannot get a definite answer as to how much ram I can put in. I bought it new January of 2009. Some people tell me 8; others 4. One said 6. How do I get a real answer?
My computer came with a 320gb drive. I have since upgraded to a 500gb and then to a 640gb. I want to put in a 1tb but I know these are thicker drives. How can I determine, before purchase, how thick of a drive I can actually put in?
    Thanks!!

How do I get a real answer?
Just ask. Apple specifies a RAM limit of 4GB for your pre-unibody machine, but many users have found that 6GB works just fine in any Core 2 Duo MBP, and others have established (by trying it) that 8GB definitely doesn't in your model or the earlier ones.
Western Digital's 12.5mm high 1TB notebook drive will fit in your machine. It fits in all unibody MBPs and the 17" (only) pre-unibody models.

I cant send emails out, on my iphone 5s, its telling me to go to account setting and put a password, i cant locate account settings. Please assist

    What email are you using?
Go to settings->mail contacts and calendar-> then tap in your email and re enter the password to your email. You may need to renter the SMTP server password too. Just anytime you see password type in your password. That should fix the issue.

I am assuming you are using the mail app.  You may have turned off recieving mail function.  Open up mail.  HIt Command comma to open preferences.  Go into general and set it like this.
