Cant sign in to Skype on win 8.1 desktop but win 8...

Hi, I'm having troubles signing in to skype on my desktop with win 8.1. The thing I dont understand is that if I try from the touch screen part of windows 8.1 it does load up ok although it is a version that I personally dont like to use (the touch screen version). What I dont understand is that yesterday skype was working under 8.1 on my desktop fine. I upgraded to win 8.1 about a week ago and havent been having problems with skype (on my desktop) until today. I havent changed anything that would affect it. So what is going on? I get the skype screen which says "Skype, signing in" and has a cool little animated circular thing that just keeps going round and round. I'm using skype 6.10.0.104.

In the Windows desktop version of the software, to sign out, click on:
Skype -> Sign Out.
You may also shut down Skype completely by right-clicking on the Skype icon and clicking Quit Skype.

The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old. Restart Skype.
N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

Is it that Firefox is not compatible with skype it seem to install ok but won't launch.

The website Skype.com came up ok i created my username and password ok as well then went to download that also seem to went smoothly. Now the icon for skype is sitting on my desktop but i cannot seem to get it to launch where i can make calls plus there are no error messages saying that i need this or that i've uninstalling and reinstalling and still nothing. I don't know am thinking i need some upgrade or something just don't know what. I appreciate whatever info you can provide.

WineBottler is extremely old for the Wine world and seems to have been abandoned over a year ago.
You can run IE6 or IE7 easily using Wineskin.
Download Wineskin Winery, and have it get the latest engine (currently WS8Wine1.3.37) and the latest wrapper (Wineskin 2.5.3), then have it create you a new blank wrapper using those, and call it IE (or whatever)
Once that's made, right click your new IE app and select show package contents so you can find Wineskin.app inside (you can also run it automatically by holding down the fn key and running IE.app, or just running IE.app before anything is installed in it... but you have to go through "show package contents" to actually see where the app is).
Using Wineskin.app, go in it to Advanced, and to the Tools tab, and run Winetricks. In Winetricks go to , or use the search bar, for IE6 or IE7, and check them and run that... it should do a full install.
After Winetricks is finished with that, close it and go back to the Config tab in Wineskin.app and choose a Windows EXE... choose the iexplore.exe file that was installed under Program Files folder... once that's done your IE.app should work fine
Do note that IE under Wine is not perfect...

Apple's X11 is quite old and shouldn't be used anyways... if you want the best X11 app for OSX, get XQuartz

I am unable to log into skype on my laptop.each time am told my sign in details not recognised, check my user name or password and try again meanwhile my user name and password is correct because am able to log in on other computers. my friends tried logging in using my laptop and they had same log in problems but are able to log into other computers. Try to reset all Skype settings:

When you say "taking pix", do you mean you would like to take a screenshot, or that you would like to take a capture from your camera to use as a profile picture? You may know this method already; it is not exactly the same as a screen capture in Skype, which would capture only the Skype window, instead it captures everything on your screen and copies it to your clipboard. Pressing Prt Sc copies it to the clipboard, so when you open your image editing software you have to paste it. This can be done with the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + C". Once you have edited it to your liking, save it to a location of your choice. If you were asking how to take a profile picture with your webcam, I do not know of a way to set it automatically, but I do know a quick workaround. (There may be an option to set it automatically with your webcam, but if there is I am not aware of it.) First, open the Camera app by typing Camera into the Start screen and pressing enter. Say "cheese" and click anywhere on the screen. This will save a snapshot. Next open Skype and click the small thumbnail image in the top right corner that has your current profile picture. A menu will pop out of the right side of the screen that shows your profile picture and status. Now click the picture and it will let you choose any picture on your computer to set as your profile picture. (To find the picture you just took from within Skype, navigate to C:\Users\[SELECT YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME HERE]\Pictures\Camera Roll). I apologize if I have over simplified it, I do not mean to be condescending but I never know how much others understand about technology and would rather provide too much information than not enough.
