Cant update past ios 5.1.1

i have been given an ipad (my dads old One) its and i pad 1 i cant update it past ios 5.1.1 and no apps will work???

iOS 5.1.1 is the latest version for the first generation iPad.

IPod Touch Won't Update Past iOS 4.2.1

I have a 16gb, 3rd generation iPod Touch (purchased September, 2009) that will not update past iOS 4.2.1. I know that the 16gb 3rd gen model didn't get all of the iOS 4 features that the rest of the 3rd gen models did, but I can't find anything on the Apple page about 4.3 that would indicate that some subset of the 3rd gen iTouches would be unable to get the update. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes version 10.2.2.12. Any ideas what's going on?

It just says that it has the most up-to-date software. From what I can tell, when they originally released the 3rd generation iPod Touch, the 16 gb one still used the 2nd generation hardware. At the time, it was still called 3rd generation. As recently as last summer when iOS 4 was released, it was still refered to as 3rd generation (the iOS 4 release information had asterisks on the 3rd gen iPod Touch to say that various features like multitasking wouldn't work with the 16 gb model). Now Apple seems to have retroactively decided to just call it 2nd generation. I'm not very happy since it was sold to me as 3rd generation...

IPad 1 will not update past iOS 5.1.1, many apps require iOS 6.0 or later. also since updating to 5.1.1 safari frequently crashes.

5.1.1. is the end of the line for the original iPad. You can't go beyond that. As for the safari crashes, is it tied to specific websites? Have you tried clearing the cache and history?

What have you tried? Connect your iPad to the computer with
which you normally sync, open iTunes, click button to check
for updates and iTunes should handle the rest. If using a Windows
computer, you may need to temporarily disable your anti-virus and
firewall for the update to succeed. If you have any problem, please
post back with the exact wording of any error message and someone
will answer. Once you have updated to iOS 6, future updates can
be done over the air without having to connect to a computer (altho'
that way will still work).

Not in an Apple Store. Since you bought it from a Walmart store, perhaps that's where you saw what you thought was identification of a 3rd gen Touch.

4.2.1 is the end of the line for the 3G. It's been discontinued since June of 2010.

I have not plugged my synced my phone in a while but it seems like it should be updated well past iOS 4.2 however when i try to update iTunes tells me that i have the latest OS. You aren't reading your version correctly. You don't have 4.2.1. You have 4.2.10 which is as far as Verizon goes. Wait until tomorrow and you can upgrade to iOS 5.0

I have an Ipod Touch 8gb which i have had for a few years. i tried to update it today to IOS 5.11 but it will not update past 4.2.1!!
What on gods green earth is going on; i'm stumped!
I have checked the upgrade settings and rechecked them and backed up and restored about 7 times and nothing, still IOS 4.2.1.
Can anyone help me?
using a windows vista laptop which has always been the normal sync for my ipod

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet. The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing. With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.
