It's the video card. Yours probably has non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the 256mb NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports ATI's Mobility Radeon X1600 or Radeon X1900, Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100, or NVIDIA's GeForce 7300 graphics processors.

Then when you updated/restored your phone it locked back up to the original carrier.

I want to give an iPad to my wife to use for work, but her employer won't let her upgrade her Macbook from Leopard to Lion. It's pointless if she can't use iCloud. Is there a workaround?
So far Apple has not upgraded the other Mac OS X versions to iCloud. She can manually enter information to be synced in the cloud but that is really tedious.

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?
Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

Sounds like you downloaded the 10.8.1 update instead of the Mountain Lion installer from the Mac App Store.
You have to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get to 10.8 -

Yes, you can, but make sure your machine meets the system requirements:

When you upgrade, you need to do the following:
1) Check all your software for compatibility with the new system.
2) Repair the hard drive with Disk Utility.
3) Make a full backup of your whole system using Time Machine.
4) Ideally, make a second full backup of your whole system using something else, like Carbon Copy Cloner. (I consider two backups to be the minimum.)
5) Wait until you have time to deal with any possible problems that crop up.
6) Install the upgrade.
Some people recommend erasing your hard drive and installing the new system "cleanly." That certainly helps ensure that you don't have any problems with the new system, but is often unnecessary. I prefer to save clean installs for when they are actually necessary, but that is only an opinion. You can certainly choose to do a clean install if you prefer. -
I have a iMac 20 intel/512 mb from 2007 .i want to instal OSX Mountain Lion, but i have a OSX 10.4.1. I need minimal OSX 10.6.8 or more! What i have to do?

If yours is truly a Core Duo then it cannot run Mountain Lion. Snow Leopard is the latest you can install.
