Cant view .avi movie?!?

hello, i have never been able to open an ".avi" movie on my computer, and it has just finally gotten to the point where i am frusterated.
does anybody know why this is, or what i can do?
I am running quicktime 7.1.3.
When i open it it says error opening movie.

Go to version tracker and search for Mplayer OSX, it plays avi files and is free.

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might work. If not, you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Do not install both Perian and the DiVX/3iVX codecs at the same time.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

Viewing avi Movie

Hi chaps,
I've downloaded a movie in the form of an .avi file. The movie plays fine using Real Player but I'd like to be able to view it on my TV using my conventional (UK) DVD player. should I just burn it to a blank DVD using Toast, or will I need to convert it in some way?

A number of utilities will make basic videos with a single chapter and no menus. Beyond that it starts to get complicated and requires special tools. Note that working with video involves a significant step up in complexity from general computer use (calculating appropriate bitrates and selecting formats of audio and video, DVD menu authoring, etc.)
While you can probably use Quicktime Pro to do this, Apple requires a separate purchase of the mpeg2 codec necessary for working with standard DVD format, so you may end up having to buy two things. There are some shareware utilities that include both the codec and the basic software, for example FFmpegX.

Cant view album/movie cover on this computer

Please help! after many disruptions with itunes7 and my lil baby(my ipod), i've finally got things in order and now when i try to view the available movies I see this- "album covers can not be viewed on this computer" and then it says "itunes has encountered a problem and must shut down". Cant view rental movie on ipad

I have an ipad 2 with OS 7.1.2. I have rented a couple of movies from itunes and cant seem to find them anywhere. When I look in "Videos" they are not there, I don't even see a category for movies or rentals. I have tried using the search feature, I've done a hard restart, I've logged out and back into iTunes. When I plug my ipad into my computer and look at the contents in iTunes there, I can see that the movies are there, but they are nowhere to be found when I look in the ipad itself.
I am leaving soon for an almost 2 day train trip, I'd really like to be able to watch the movies I paid for, someone please help!!

I understand you have rented a couple of movies from iTunes on the computer, the following information will help you sync those rentals to your iPad.

Once the rental is downloaded, you can watch it on your computer or transfer the rental to a supported iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV (1st generation):
Connect the device and select it in iTunes.
Click the Movies button.
Select the movie, and then click Move.
After all movies have been moved, click Apply in the lower-right corner of iTunes.
You must be connected to the Internet to transfer a rented movie.

Cant view dowloanded movie on windows PC but have been charged.

I purchased a movie and received email notification of card being charged - I cannot locate the downloaded movie anywhere it doesnt show in itunes under purchased [ i use a windows PC not mac]. It doesnt shopw up on iph4 either.

i am sorry - i did do all of that. But I am hitting a brick wall. The closing comment after I did so said install complete and followed up by saying :

BUT when I check to see what version of QT I have it says 10 (not 7) even though I clicked on 7. I think I need to uninstall everything and start again. Sadly, i dont even know how to do that!

Trouble with .avi movies on newest MacBook Air

I am very happy with my macboorAir but have trouble viewing .avi movies. I downloaded DIVX Pro (paid) and some movies converted from .avi to dvix in the free version of the program. However, after installing the DIVX Pro, the converter states it has converted the film correctly, however it is not stored anywhere, not traceable. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

Your question is very confusing and messy.
Best I can recomend is to download Perian, which is free codec pack for QuickTime - http://perian.org/
or/and
Download opensource VLC Player, which plays practicaly anything that can be played

Quicktime 7 can play AVIs, but Quicktime X cannot. You could download Quicktime 7, get VLC, or convert your AVI to a Quicktime-supported format like m4a using http://www.macroplant.com/adapter/

I do have an external HD with at least 3T of movies but can not play them at all play them at all they are AVI movies what should i to to play them please help me out

Your intuition is correct. Download a free download of VLC player, and you may end up using it as your default video player. (It's faster and more versatile than QTPlayer.)
When you install it on your MacBook, it willl allow you to view media on your external HD.
