Canvas Playback - Fixing Dropped Frames!!??

Hey all - I'm trying to edit some compressed HD video footage on my new Mac Pro and I'm for some reason getting the "Warning - Dropped Frames: One of more frames were dropped during playback" message whenever an edit happens in my video..
I'm editing in a sequence matched to the clip settings, with one layer of video and this is my computer's specs:
2x 2.4GhZ Quad-Core "Westmere" Processors
4x 2GB 1033MhZ RAM
1x ATI HD5870 GPU
1x 1TB 7200RPM SATA HDD (Stock)
What could possible be the problem? I know this computer should be able to play back video without any hassles, it was expensive enough anyways!
And no - the Canvas is not overlapping any other windows or vice versa.
And yes - I've tried everything it said to try on the Apple support page, and even then, it shouldn't have this problem in the first place with default settings.
Thanks a bunch!
-Zack

Tom Wolsky: If you go to an Apple Store, they have H.264 all over the TVs and tout how well it works as compression. I would be willing to bet a high majority of people I know who use Windows would never have heard of H.264, and I would be willing to bet that the high majority of Mac users I know would definitely have heard of H.264 - that has legs to it.
Also, like I said before, if I knew that H.264 was the problem I wouldn't have asked my question the way I did.
It could have been: Software bug, hard drive issue, indexing issue, wrong setting, bad install, etc. etc.
It was much quicker and easier for me to post a question with the information available to me than to search through all the different possible problems. Obviously, there were people here that are much better at diagnosing problems than I am, and that's why I posted a question and turned to them rather than trying to tackle the problem on my own.
Seriously, how many questions are posted on here that have "easy-to-find" answers somewhere else on the boards or through "simple" searching on the internet? Yet somehow you've managed to post 23,000 times - are each of them just to tell people why they're wrong and that they should look before they ask, along with not offering help?
I think a key difference is that I made this post in complete innocence just looking for help, I didn't have any hostile intent and didn't make a post just to make someone feel a certain way or to prove some point I find worth proving.. I'm doing that now, but only in response.
Still haven't been home to try that Canon thing - will post soon about that.

  • Premiere Pro CC (8.1) on MacBook Pro (late 2011, build 8.1) bad playback, stutters, drops frames, loses sync

I've used Premiere Pro as a playback device for video files for festivals etc for about 4 years. Unique amongst software (?) players PP can easily adapt to the multiple resolutions, codecs and, especially, frame rates we now encounter via Sequence Settings.
But in all that time I've had issues with mediocre playback with dropped frames, loss of audio sync and stuttering commonly seen. I have recently upgraded to PP 8.1 and Mac OSX 10.9.5 and have installed SSDs on the Thunderbolt bus so I had hoped things would be better but infact they are worse. I've seen lots of threads here and on Creative Cow about this but apart from the obvious setup issues nothing seems to have solved most of these peoples problems. So can PP play out smoothly on a rendered (or not?) timeline? If Quicktime, Avid and Resolve can play the movie properly why can't Premiere Pro?
I do note that my GPU (AMD Radeon 6770M) is no longer listed as supported but and ATI Radeon 6770M is. Is this the issue?

I too have problems with audio on CS6.05, I wanted to route my audio thru my digi003 interface, but no avail., tried it on my Presonus light pipe, nada. I have a matrox mojito max and tried to download using it;s vetura capture software, still dropouts. I then went to cineform.com and downloaded the free Cineform Decoder Codec under the downloads file and used it, No more dropouts as of date when using this codec. Its listed as Gopro Cineform 4k/3D/HD codec.

  • Jerky playback with dropping frames after iPod/iPhone Conversion

    Hi!
I have a problem converting quicktime hd material to iPod/iPhone H.264. I know that there are iPhone Trailers available on the Apple Movie Trailer Page, but lets take a trailer as an example video source, because they are free to use and are leading to the "dropping frames" problem.
    Source video data:
    H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    23.976 fps
    5755 Kbps (VBR)
    1280x720 (16:9) / Progressive
    Converted video data:
    H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    23.976 fps
    1472 Kbps (VBR)
    640x360 (16:9) / Progressive
While the source video playback is smooth in quicktime, the converted video drops frames and the playback is very jerky.
The problem occurs with every single trailer i tried (e.g. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button).
I also tried to convert the material with visualhub (ffmpeg/vlc) - same result.
Has anyone ideas how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

The issue could very easily be insufficient hard drives.  You really should have a minimum of three internal drives for editing.  A single 5400 RPM drive is bound to cause lags.

  • FCP X has Horrible Playback and Dropped Frames

I edit and still do in FCP 7 with HD footage on my small 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3 Ram iMac... and it does fine.
I would think FCP X would be the same? I have horrible playback, thousands of dropped frames, and I can't watch my video smoothly. ever.
And I'm having this trouble even after transcoding proxy media. In the system Prefs I've told the software to playback proxy, and not alert me when a frame drops... I thought these settings would help me edit faster and smoother... but I'm just being bogged down by dropped frames.
My media is stored on a Lacie 2TB via Firewire 800, and only iTunes and Safari are open.
Is there another step I can take to make the playback better? I know I have a small, but yet decent iMac, should I be having this issue? I thought 64 bit was going to make everything faster.
    Thanks for the help y'all,
    JS

Sounds like it might be a graphics card incompatibility problem. What specific graphic card does your iMac have? To check, go to "About this Mac" in the apple menu, click on "More Info" and then click on "Graphics/Displays" in the Contents pane.
Then you can check for compatibility using these two support articles:
Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4: Graphics card compatibility
Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4: Using OpenCL-enabled graphics cards

  • Inconsistent playback stuttering/dropped frames

I just switched from a mid 2010 Mac Pro to a new 27" IMac 5K retina display.  I'm working on a one hour program which was started on my MacPro.  It died so I moved the project to my MacBook Pro and then to the IMAC.  Footage is a mix of DVCPRO HD 1080/30i; GoPro 1080/30 & 60P; HDV; Canon 1080/30p; old & new stills, some old & small, some large & new shot with the Canons.  Timeline is 1080/30i.
When playing back from the timeline I'm getting inconsistent stuttering in some shots.  Inconsistent because a specific clip may play back smoothly once, then the next time I play it there is obvious stuttering.  Play again and the problem will show up in a different place in the clip and it may be worse or better.  could start 3 seconds into the clip, might be 5 or 7.  I first noticed this when editing on my Laptop, which is a 15" retina model with full Ram and the fastest I7 processor new last year, which is not all that unusual.
When I moved to the IMac I did a transfer from the MacPro time machine, with the understanding it might not be the best way to start up aa new machine.  After all the issues I reformatted the IMAC and started from scratch.  Exact same results.
I rolled back from 2014, 8.2 to CC 7 and the playback smoothed out in some test shots I brought into a new project.  I also tried exporting a few minutes of the most troubled parts of the timeline to an H264 file and it played back smoothly, so apparently the file isn't corrupt just tthe playback.  Fortunately I'm not editing with the client, so that element is mute, but I do from time to time have clients here and this sort of  playback isn't real terrific for showing off the work.
I've spent a couple days & several hours on the phone with tech support with no solution in the problem.
I also tried the offending shots in FCP7 and they play back consistently smooth.  The older DVCPROHD and HDV clips were captured in FCP7, so I recaptured them in Premier Pro, thinking that for whatever reason that may have been the issue, but the results are identical.
I'm at the end of what few "wits" I have left and would be most appreciative for any suggestions on a solution.  Also when I reinstalled Premier and my plugins they are not showing up in PP.  When I look in the library only 7.0 is there with of course my plugins.  how do I get 8.2 to be present.  just add a new folder and drag the plugins from 7 to 8?  Plugins are only the Creative Impatience feathered crop.  Boris Continuum 9 Image restoration and Sonicfire Pro.
    Thx...Jim Watt

  • Dropped Frame Error Message During Playback in Snow Leopard

I have FCE 4.0.1 and I just recently upgraded to 10.6.1 and now I keep getting these error messages during playback saying Dropped Frames. Its telling me to try lowering my audio playback quality, increase my ram, etc.. Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard I never got these errors. I have a 8 core Mac Pro with more than enough ram and hard drive space and again this wasn't happening until I upgraded. Can someone assist and tell me why this is happening and what can fix this issue.

You can try trashing your preferences and rebooting and repairing permissions and running Disk Utility, the usual maintenance suggestions, but I think the real issue is the OS and software installation, and the only way to fix that is to redo it.

  • Dropped Frames w/ Ae Dynamic Link Comps Using BMD (on Playback)

    Hey guys,
This problem started exibiting itself a couple weeks ago. Hoping for some feedback regarding possible problems other than just bad performance with my BMD Hardware.
The following is the system it's occuring on:
    2009 2.93Ghz/16GB 8-Core MacPro
    Adobe CS5 - Latest Updates
Internal Raid 0 - Footage Files
    Internal 7200RPM - Project Files
    Internal 7200RPM - OS
(all drives at 50% or more current capacity)
    Stock GT120GFX
    GTX285
Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D to HDLinkPro
2 Monitors (1 to each GFX card)
1 Plasma monitor out of the Decklink
Now that's out of the way, here's the scenario:
Using Blackmagic Design sequence presets in Premiere and Dyanamic Linking AE comps in the Premiere sequence . Playing back the sequence results in CS5 stopping playback because "Dropped Frames Detected"
This ONLY occurs in the following situations:
    - with any BMD preset
    - only unrendered (yellow) timeline comps
Rendering the timeline (sot it's green) results in uninterrupted playback
The comps have no problems in AE
Premiere exhibits no playback issues outside of BMD presets
Premiere exhibits no playback issues with other footage
All fingers point to something internal when in a BMD preset. But could a drive be failing? Something else?
    Thanks.

Shouldn't this be normal behavior for a Dynamic Link AE comp? If it's dynamically linked, it means it's not rendered, so Premiere is trying to play the AE comp in realtime (like hitting the play button in AE without doing a RAM preview). If the comp in AE is simple enough that it will play realtime in AE without doing a RAM preview, but still will not play realtime in Premiere on a BMD timeline, it could be do to the RGB to YUV conversion. AE only outputs in RGB, while a Decklink card (unless otherwise set in the preferences) outputs in YUV, so it needs to do a RGB/YUV conversion when playing the AE comp, and that can slow things down.
I use a Decklink card and I find if I have a Dynamic Link comp in Premiere that stutters on playback, it will sometimes then play realtime after the initial playblack. I'm guessing Premiere might be caching the frames similar to an AE RAM preview.
Todd, I believe the playback resolution setting is ignored on a BMD timeline.

  • FMLE 3.2 capturing fewer frames after 8 hours of recording but no 'dropped frames' reported

A client of ours is capturing 20x live streams via FMLECMD directly to F4V files (15min chunks) for ~21 hours a day. They're finding that after approx 8 hours of recording, FMLE gradually reduces the number of frames it's recording & the resulting files have very choppy playback (no dropped frames are reported). It eventually crashes on most of the machines before completing a day's work. Some machines also display a C++ error message on crash whereas others just freeze up.
One PC was set to capture a blank input & doesn’t exhibit this behaviour ie captures at the initial/specified framerate even 20hrs in. Please see the profile xml below.
The spec of the capture workstations is:
    HP Z200 i3 i3-540/3.06GHz/2GB/160GB Hard Drive/DVD-Writer/ Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD/Windows 7 Professional
Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro in each, running Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 (scripted to launch via CLI with no preview). These PCs are fresh out-of-the-box & have never been online.
As an immediate/short-term workaround, we've set a restart interval for FMLE of 5 hours but this compromises the recordings as the stop/start process obviously results in a loss of recording time & requires manual file renaming. Please note, none of the machines are streaming - just capturing locally to F4V.

The video framerate is 25fps. Timecode is embedded every 5 frames.
Capture starts at 25fps & continues capturing at that rate until around 8
hours. After which it gradually reduces the captured framerate till it
crashes or completes. This behaviour is exhibited on all 20 Pcs. The CLI
reports no dropped frames at all.

  • Dropped Frames on Playback for simple DV material - Restart Fixes it

I'm having a strange problem where RT in FCP 6 is only working after a fresh restart.
My simple test is to create a new project, new sequence (DV NTSC), drag in a small JPEG and apply the timecode generator.
After a fresh restart this plays back without issue. However, if not (ie I have quit FCP and restart it), FCP drops frames.
    Any thoughts???
    - T.

I'm having what I can only assume to be a similar issue.
When scrubbing the timeline one frame at a time the audio plays alternating channels. This is slowing down the playback. Video plays at normal speed.
I tried adjusting audio settings and RT, but to no avail. A fresh restart does not fix this.
    What's the deal?

The QT player is programmed to drop frames during playback if needed in an effort to maintain the target frame rate. If you want all frames to be played, the turn on the "Play all frames" viewing option but be advised that the playback frame rate may then vary drastically.

  • Dropped frames during playback in FCP 7

I have searched high and low, asked every FCP expert I know, and noone can help me.
So I turn to this forum and you the users for help.
I just upgraded from an old DVCAM to a new Canon 60D, which shoots full HD. Usually I never have problems editing with or without text, but all of a sudden I got dropped frames when I put text on my project. No warning of dropped frames though. Just some skipping and pausing before the clip continued.
I was running FCP 6 but upgraded to FCP 7 in hopes of it removing the problem. It just got worse. Now I can't even playback video or text by itself (I am testing with 5-10 second bits). Whenever the screen should go blank I instead get the unpleasant warning of dropped frames. The same thing happens when I play text by itself or over the video. When I try exporting it (to see if it is just a playback error) QT and VLC Player both show the most hideous grey, green and pixellated versions of my (still very short) clip.
And if anyone suggests changing RT options - where do I find those options? The RT button on my timeline only shows the options: "play base layer only", "use playback settings" and "Full quality" - and the problems keep showing up in all three selections.
Could my settings be off? I am not sure I have found the right ones for the footy from a Canon 60D.
I hope someone is able to help me with this. It is the most frustrating experience I have ever had through my many years with FCP.

Switching from DV to HD can be a nightmare if you were 'getting away with things' using DV material that you really won't be able to in HD.
First - Where is the media? If it is on the system drive of the macbook pro... get it off of there!! It should be on an external drive - FW800 will get you going better than anything else...
Second - simple fix, but make sure... are any of your windows overlapping? is your canvas window set to FIT TO WINDOW? If there are scroll bars in your canvas or viewer that would be bad too.
Third -- let's figure out what and how you are converting the material off the 60D.
What is the workflow you are using? You should probably be editing in some form of Apple ProRes... I like the LT setting - minimal quality loss with max gain in bit rates.

Check out that video and see if it doesn't answer a few questions...

  • Playback dropped frames - worst when re-starting computer

I'm editing a short 3 minute project - DV-NTSC sequence - and am getting those **** occasional dropped frames during playback (not in the same place) and cannot figure it out for the life of me.
I'm new to editing and am using FCE HD 3.5
New mbp 15" 2.16, 2 Gig Ram, 160 hard drive
    10.4.9
Seagate 400gb ext. drive (325gb free, FW800, Mac OS Extended, journaling off) built by OWC (Mercury Elite Pro al) w/ media, waveforms, thumbnails, etc
Settings: Safe RT, Dynamic video quality, Full frame rate, Real-time Audio Mixing to 4 tracks - low quality playback.
Canvas/viewer etc are not overlapping. Am viewing at "fit to window" size
Easy setup - DV NTSC - and all my media is DV/DVCPro - NTSC, with 48khz, 16-bit audio. Some files are anamorphic and I've changed distort and motion to make them fit 4:3.
Activity monitor shows FCE using 20-36% of CPU during playback.
Energy Saver set to Never sleep computer, Never sleep display, don't sleep hard disks, no screensaver - and am running Spindownfix. Universal Access is off. Firevault not enabled. No other programs are running
I am new to editing so please let me know if doing this could be the culprit: in some places have 3 tracks of video overlapping - not because i need to but out of laziness; in others have 3 overlapping video with a lot of keyframes adjusting opacity. ALSO: Am setting Au dynamics processor for lots of the audio - and also changing the level db in the stereo track for the same audio - should I be making these changes in the au dynamics filter instead?
Also, problem seems to be worse when I first re-start the computer - and tends to get better as I go along....?? (I assume its okay to restart my mbp without unmounting my external drive? - that it does that automatically?)
I am rendering everything (although isn't it supposed to play without dropping frames without doing so?) At one point, my project wouldn't let me render portions of audio (they were marked red, but nothing would happen when I tried render all audio or mix down etc). I trashed my preferences and that seemed to fix that problem.
I feel like I've tried everything. I'd really appreciate any advice. (Since the problem isn't all that frequent, should I consider just taking off the "report dropped frames" warning until I'm closer to a final cut?) This is a new machine, so if its a hardware problem i definitely want to get it fixed sooner than later. Thanks!

The first thing I'd try is to mixdown audio (alt-cmd-R), and see what happens.
In addition I wouldn't leave overlapping clips unused in the tracks, even though I'm not sure it makes much difference.
    Piero

  • Dropped frames in canvas on FCP5HD

I just sat down to review the FCP5 editing tutorials on my new macbookpro. However, the the canvas window keeps tripping,I get a dropped frames warning window. It says to turn off "unlimited RT" and/or Lower my compression data rate. I've got the RT settings for playback video quality set at low and playback frame rate set at dynamic which is what was recomended if this problem occured. It didn't help. How do I turn off unlimited RT? how do I lower my compression data rate? Or what can I do to fix this really annoying problem?
    Thanks
    KJ

You can only install applications on the system drive. That is, on your laptop's hard drive.
Media files SHOULD go onto the external drive.
    One recommended setup is this:
    Laptop hard drive:
    - applications
    - project files
    - waveform cache
    - thumbnail cache
    External hard drive
    - autosave vault
    - all media files
    - audio and video render files
The reason you put your autosave vault on the external is you want it on a different drive than the project file. If one or the other dies you have at least something to go from.
Also, get yourself yet another drive or a bunch of DVDs to use a backups for non-timecode material.
    good luck.

System Settings--Scratch Disk Video Capture and Audio Capture set to RAID. Video Render and Audio Render set both to Maxtor or RAID. Either case dropped frames.

I've read through the posts about dropped frames, but can't find a solution. Please help!
When I capture video and play it back in the viewer, it looks normal. But when I pull the video into the Timeline and edit it, the video on the Canvas looks choppy and frames appear to be dropped. When there's fast movement in the shot, it looks "ghosty". I've fully rendered everything as per the user manual, but I'm still having issues. Even when I export the project to a QuickTime movie and burn it on a DVD, the problem remains.
As per the scratch disks tab of system settings, I'm capturing and rendering on an external FW800 drive with 13.5 GB space left. But when I look at the item properties of each clip, the "source" says it's on my internal system drive. Is this normal and if not, perhaps this is a source of the problem?

-Cache files are saving to system drive
-Playback settings: safe RT, high quality, full frame rate, pulldown pattern 2:3:2:3.

    Please help!

You said you had about 13GB remaining on the drive. How large is that drive altogether? Also, how large is this project? How much space does all the content take up and how long and complicated is your timeline? The answer to these questions may not get you the answer you're looking for, but it's a start in the right direction. If it's a feasible length and size, you shouldn't have any problems as far as RAM or processing power, so you're good on that. You might also want to change the specs you have. Apparently you've updated your OS since filling it out.
