Canvas shows no clips...

I'm working with all images and suddenly I am unable to view my timeline. Sometimes I can see some of the layers, but it's all gray. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i've got experience, just haven't slept in the pass two days, forgive me for my laziness
i have a lot of images, some layered, ranging from Planar RGB, tiffs, and DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression types.
in the middle of editing, the picture in my canvas went to black. when i scroll through my timeline, nothing shows up. but sometimes, for example if i scroll on top of a layered image of a person and a background, i can see the outline of the person, but they are completely filled in with gray. this only happens every now and then. for the most part, i just see black.
i just bought a new machine today, 2.8 ghz core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram. and i just installed fcp 6, and just updated to 6.0.2. i was working off of other machines prior to working on my new current one. all of the images have heavy effects on them, which I don't have on my current machine. i am doing basic editing on this machine and effects on a different one.
that's all I can think of right now. hopefully someone has an answer for me, i need to ship this project off tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!! *dozes off*
EDIT: i can double click on the sequence and it will play everything in the viewer from right before the picture went black, but if i drag my sequence onto another sequence or another project, it just played black. it does play the audio tho, and i am able to see the overlays.

  • Sequence plays right on canvas but exports clips at wrong in/out points!

    This is driving me nuts.
I've made a 90 second sequence the way I always have: previewing the clip in the viewer, setting in/out points, then dragging it down to the time line. It plays perfectly when I watch it from the time line/canvas but when I export to QT the clips are all wrong (sometimes a whole second off)! The cuts all happen in the right places in regards to matching the music, but the clips inside the cuts have become skewed one way or another.
    I hope that made sense.
I'm working with files from a 7D, it's my first time messing with HDSLR stuff.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I couldn't figure out MPEG Steamclip (it was a little late haha), so I imported into iMovie as a HDV 720p project and then pulled the converted files from inside the project. It came into FCE fine with no rendering needed so I figured it was fine until I watched the sequence after it was exported to QT.
Sequence is good in FCE "canvas" but all wrong in the exported QT movie. I don't understand how it would get screwed up between the perfect preview and the final output.
Another note... the thumbnails in the time line are wrong in regards to the canvas. What the canvas shows as the first frame of a clip is not the first frame on the time line clips thumbnail. The thumbnail is the actual first frame that is exported to the final QT file though. I'm bewildered.

  • Multiclip Problem: Canvas Shows Angle w At a Different In Point than Viewer

Having trouble figuring out a multiclip puzzle.
I made 2 angle multiclip that contains two different shots of a single live performance shot by two different unsynched cameras. (I synched them up for the multiclip by choosing a common in point on both clips before I made them into a multiclip.)
For some reason, when I drop the multiclip into a sequence to edit it, the canvas displays one of the angles at a slightly different timepoint, and I can't figure out why. When I click on angle 1 in the viewer, the canvas mirrors it exactly. But when I click angle 2, for some reason, the canvas shows me that angle, but set to an entirely different frame. I found this so confusing that I actually trashed the multiclip and created a new one, (using the same clips set to the same inpoints.) But that didn't help. When I click on the angle 2 of this newly created multiclip, I still get a shot of that angle in my canvas that shows a different frame than the one I synched up in my multiclip.
Any idea what's going on here?
before I made the multiclip that were shot by different cameras. video of a live performance into a timeline so that can I cut back and forth between the two angles the two cameras into a single "live" edit the angles. If I click angle one in my viewer, the canvas mirrors this image, as it's supposed to. However, for some reason, when I click on angle 2, the canvas displays that angle, only at a different in point. Obviously, if I try to edit the multiclip this way

Don't think that would've worked, either, since slipping the master take did nada to the finished edit.
I finally gave up on trying to edit that sequence multiclip and simply did it the old fashioned time consuming way: I dropped both clips into a regualr timeline, synched them up, deleted the audio tracks for one of them, and then simply went through the sequence choosing which shot I wanted for a given moment and razor blade cutting the extraneous video segment(s) out. As a poor man's toggle, I turned the video on and off for the B-roll, which allowed me to compare the two video angles at the touch of a button. Not as elegant as true M/C editing, but, hey, I was able to complete the edit in a couple hours, versus the three days I'd just wasted trying to get the M/C to work.
For the record, I suspect the underlying problem may be related to the fact that the problematic angle--the one that wouldn't stay synched was originally shot at 29.97 and then conformed to match the 23.98 sequence. I have a hunch that FCP's m/c synch didn't like reading and habing to synch a clip that had been reduced from 29.97 to 23.98. Why that would be, I don't know. But it's the closest I've come to figuring out what might have caused the problem.
If anyone has anything to add, feel free. Otherwise, I'm just going to continue switching angles for the rest of this project using the cumbersome method described above, which at least has the virtue of being WYSIWYG!
    Thanks!

  • How do I show a clipping path on an image in Illustrator?

    Hi there
I am a beginner when it comes to Illustrator and only use it when I have to - like now!
I was wondering - Is it possible to place an image into an AI file and show its clipping path? (that was created in Photoshop)
I have tried saving the image as a TIFF, PSD but no luck.
I have also attached a screen shot - just to show the image that has a path.
    Thanks in advance.

I have placed the image but the 'Embed' option isn't highlighted so I can't click on this!
I think I have worked out another way to do this - I have saved the image on a transparent background in photoshop as a psd file and then when I place this in AI, the Photoshop Import options box appears and with this set to 'Convert layers to objects' it somehow
works! like so............ (probably not the best way to do it?!!)

First off, this image is not a raw image.  It is a compressed small-raw of some sort so Adobe's normal demosaicking algorithms are not being employed, and Adobe is having to reverse engineer R, G, B channels from Y, Cb, Cr channels, so something may be non-optimal this conversion.
Secondly, at least with this non-raw Y, Cb, Cr image, there are some Y pixels that have zero value in the file, so no matter what you do, other than adjusting the bottom of the tone curve above zero, they will be clipped.
It also seems that the clipping indicator triangles are not affected by the Detail settings so turning off any noise-reduction or sharpening is required show you which pixels the clipping triangle is keying off of.
Here is your image opened in an RawDigger which is a raw analysis program that indicates the Y channel does have a minimum value of 0:
Here is a screenshot of LR with a very small crop on the shadowed background area above the performers, with the Detail settings turned off--no noise reduction or sharpening, and the Toning settings as bright as possible, and in that small crop area, there are a few black pixels that are highlighted blue if I turn on the clipping indicator, so it's not surprising, that with this image, at least, the black clipping indicator doesn't turn off very easily.  In this side-by-side, they have the same settings, but the Before image is without the clipping indicator and the After image is with the clipping indicator engaged so you can see the 4 pixels that are 0 in the tiny cropped area:
Here is a DNG of the settings as in the above LR screenshot, other than the embedded preview that appears to be the entire image not the tiny cropped area:

  • Imported clips pane shows old clips?

When I create a new project in iMovie '11, a nice blank area shows up in the project pane of the interface. Then I choose File > Import > Movies and import a new clip.
However, the lower right pane, where it shows my imported clips, continues to show clips from my last project. This is confusing and adds clutter, as i don't wish to use any of the clips from my last project.
What's more, when I click Last Import in the Event Library section, the imported clips pane still does not show only the clip I just imported, but it continues to show clips from my last project.
How do I clear the lower right pane so it shows only clips I have imported for my newest project?

When you import clips they go in to the currently open event.  Create a new event (which will be empty), give it a descriptive name and then import into that.

  • Movie clip shows no time amount, but properties show the clip is 1.36GB

    Hi all,
    I have a weird problem. I set up my Canon HV20 with iMovie 6HD to capture a time lapse of butterflies comming out of their cocoon. I had it set to capture 1 frame every 90 frames. I started it at 10:55 pm last nite and woke up 5:25am this morning. Guess what! All four of them came out! I thought "GREAT", let me see what it caught. There are three clips;
    Clip 01 - time- 2:00:13, 1.37GB
    Clip 02 - time - 0:00:00, 1.36GB
    Clip 03 - time - 26:04, 284MB
The properties show that clips 1 and 2 started capture at 10:55 p.m. and clip 3 started capture at 1:55 am. I could have swore that when the clips were in the clips pane, there was a time amount on clip 2. After i put it in the time line it went to all "0".
What could have caused this? When I opened the package I see that clips 1 and 2 show the first frame of the clip, but clip 2 only shows the quicktime logo. It doesn't play when I try to play in Qt. Is there a time limit per clip? I thought it would just record as 1 big clip.
    Thanks for you help

Are you seeing your music listed in the iPod screen, or in Win explorer as in your earlier post?
I can see all the songs in my Edrive>al's Ipod> Ipod Control> Music folder.
A corrupted iPod database, will report zero music used, and have your music size reported as others, so you wont see the music in the iPod screen. Sorry, I thought there was some hope for you with iPodAccess, in recovery of the corrupted iPod database with your ratings.
You can try to borrow and  use the Mac Disk Utility ->First Aid ->Repair.
Of course, if your iPod Hardisk is in a bad state, from the Disk Diagnostic report, then all my suggestion are futile.

  • Any way to show used clips?

In iMovie, when a clip is used in a project and that project is open, you'll see an orange line indicating it is being used.  I find this feature very helpful when you're going through a lot of clips.  Is there a way to do something similar in FCPX?
I have seen some people recommend marking a section (or entire clip) as a favorite prior to bringing it in your timeline.  Then you'll have the green bar indicating what part was used. I don't think this works very well for two reasons:
If you've done some pre-work identifying good clips and marking them as favorites/sub-clips, there is no way to distinguish what you had previously marked as a favorite and what is actually in your project.  Would be a good idea to go through a bunch of clips, mark them as favorites, and be sure they are all in your project.
If you change the duration of the clip once it's in the timeline (which I do quite often) the green bar no longer is an accurate indicator of what is actually in the project.
So anyone got any idea of how to do this?  Any other tricks they use to show which clips have been used and which ones haven't?

Regarding the favorites trick, I have read that one already, but if you look at my first post I reference this and why it doesn't really work for me.
Mostly my biggest problem with it is two-fold:
    1) I would like to pre-favorite clips ahead of time.  Now I have clips that I have pre-favorited and ones that I've added...how to tell the difference?  How do I know which clips that I have favorited have yet to make it into my project?  If you had both favorites AND a way to keep track, you could use it like a checklist.  A way to visually make sure everthing you intended to add has made it.
    2)  For my particular project I am trying to condense hours of wedding coverage into a couple minute highlight film.  This means I am going to for sure end up dragging more than I can fit into the timeline and massaging it from there.  What this means is that even though I marked it as "favorite" when I add it, there's no telling how I've trimmed it, if I might have deleted it, etc, once it is in the timeline.  It's all manually done and does not reflect what is actually in the timeline.
Probably what I will do is just pre-determine all my favorite clips, filter them from there, drag EVERYTHING that is favorite into the timeline at once and start tweaking directly in the timeline.

  • When I place a clip in the timeline and try to watch it, the viewer says "Unrendered" and it will not show the clip

When I place a clip in the timeline and try to watch it, the viewer says "Unrendered" and it will not show the clip. What do I need to do to fix this?

Option 1: Render the clip in FCE then watch it.
Option 2 (preferred): Convert the clip so it will match your Sequence settings in FCE prior to importing the clip into your project.  It will not need rendering if converted properly.

  • IMovie very slow -- how do you stop it showing all clips?

hi. i'm using iMovie 11, Mountain Lion, and a brand new, latest model, retina macbook (one month old), and i'm trying to figure out why my iMovie is so slow.
i originally imported all of my clips and photos into iPhoto, with no problem, and iMovie is displaying all the available clips in the event library correctly. But there's a few hundred different clips, and it's showing every single one... making it incredibly slow to open and do anything.
I can't seem to find a way to adjust the event library so it just shows the event headings (all of the clips are sorted into days, and iPhoto shows them exactly like that -- one icon for each day. i can then click onto each day to see the clips).
I have already tried using "optimize video" from the File menu, and that hasn't made much of a difference.
is it okay uploading all the clips into iPhoto, and just letting iMovie take them from there? or should i move the clips into a different folder?
any help would be greatly appreciated, as iMovie is practically unusable at the speed it's crawling.

Yup... in the end I had to delete all of the iPhoto stuff, photos and videos, and re-import just the photos on their own. Then i re-imported all the videos into iMovie through the iMovie dropbox. That seperated all the dates out into their own event, rather than just having one big huge event. It's super speedy now, so problem solved.
But if anyone else has this problem... if you've got a lot of videos, then don't import them into iPhoto!

    Christa,
Have you tried using iMovie for your video clips? If you aren't familiar with iMovie here is a link to the iMovie tutorials. I would think your current camera should be just fine.

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Scrolling text won't show on clip

im new to using this program and can't figure out why my text wont show on a clip that i put on the timeline. My video clip is in Track 1A. And the text clip, which I dragged from the project window, is above in Track 2. But for whatever reason when i press play the text doesnt show while my original video just continues. i tried to mess around with the transparency options but i dont really know what im doing in that regards either. what am i doing wrong?

That is Premiere 6.5 you are using. I do not think you were able to update to 5.0.2
This is the Premiere Pro CS5 forum.
    Try rendering the timeline.

  • In iMovie, how do you show a clip of you talking and then a picture but your voice is still going on?

Lately on iMovie I've been trying to figure out how to do a certain editing trick. Here's an example: On the Bachelor, they do a lot of things where they will show clips of the bachelor staring off into the sunset but in the background Sean is talking about love. Then, they will continue Sean talking, but this time it's the actual clip of Sean saying all these things in an interview. Basically,  I can't figure out how to edit the audio so that it is not showing someone saying the words the whole time, but at one point it will. I know this is kind've confusing, but if you know how to help, please do!

    Hi
In iMovie Preferences - You turn on - Advanced Tools !
Then You put Your Video Clip into the Movie project
Then You select the photo (e.g. from Media tool/Photos/iPhoto etc)
    - drag this photo - ontop of the Video Clip and release
    - Now You get a Menu
    - Select Cutaway
    Done

  • Video panel showing green clips and glitchy playback

My issue is that the video, whenever i add an effect or text, like if i do anything to edit the video, in my panel the video has a green thumbnail. after it shows this green thumbnail when i play it back it plays a little of the true clip(s) and then grabs like 3 other random clips usually about 3 or more frames of it, from somewhere else in the video and plays them in place of my video. My work ive done is just deleted! im not understanding whats wrong. Oh and im in adobe premiere pro cs6.0.3. Im actually like semi-new to this but i know this is no editing issue this is a program issue.

OK, there are many nVidia video cards, that are certified to provide full support for the Mercury Playback Engine (MPE), and they have CUDA capabilities. There are other nVidia cards, that will work perfectly, after one applies the "hack" to the supported cards txt file. For more background on CUDA and MPE, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4152667#4152667
Hope that helps, and good luck,
