Canvas, Timeline and Browser missing.

My canvas timeline and browser are all missing.
In window their greyed out too.
I cant even import any files?..
What do i need to do?.

Opening the Canvas window and the Timeline from the browser

I am on an Intel 2x2.66 Dual Core using OS 10.4.11 and working in FCP 6.04.
I know this is a stupid question but having been a composer all my life, I am not up to speed on FCP and I seem to be unable to find the answer in my manual.
I dragged a QuickTime movie to the browser window. It is 500x375 in dimension and uses a H.264, AAC codecs. (info I got from the Get Info window).
The video shows up and plays in the Viewer window but I cannot get the Canvas window nor the Timeline to open.
I have tried selecting the sequence from the list in the browser and then control clicking it and looking at the shortcut menu there. The manual says I should choose Open Timeline from this shortcut menu but that is not even a choice I have. I don't mean it is grayed out, I mean there is no Open Timeline choice on the menu.
As an alternate, the manual suggests selecting the sequence and then choosing View > Sequence in Editor. I tried this also. There is no Sequence in Editor choice under the View menu. There is a Clip in Editor choice but when I select that it simply opens the movie in Quicktime.
I am aware that I am probably forgetting something simple or doing something stupid but I cannot figure it out. Help would be much appreciated.

the simple fact that is being eluded to here is that without an active sequence in the project (shown in the browser) there is no canvas or timeline. If you delete your sequence from the browser, the timeline and canvas will disappear, and you will have to create a new sequence, then open that sequence by double clicking it, to get those windows back. Canvas and Timeline display sequence content. No sequence, no c/t.

Missing timeline and canvas!

While I was switching around to different window arrangements I also opened up another project because I was trying to figure out how to view the RGB controls for a video that I still haven't found. I closed the second project I opened and that took away my timeline and canvas! I still have my original project open and under the Window menu the Canvas, Tool Bench, and Timeline are grayed out! I've closed my project and reopened it yet they still don't come back. They do however appear in my other test project when I open that but as soon as I close it then they are gone!
How do I get back all my stuff?

Double click on the Sequence in the Browser window.

Ok I dont know whats going on but when I go to Window-> Canvas it is greyed out!!! Whats going on pls pls help me!

The Canvas and Timeline options are greyed out because there is no open sequence. Look in your browser for a sequence, double-click it, and the Canvas & Timeline will appear.
By default, the Viewer will load a video Slug, which is just black video.
This is normal.

Where'd my timeline and canvas go?

I just tried to open up a project in progress by going to File-->Open recent. When the project opens up there is no timeline or canvas. I tried going to window-->arrange-->standard, but they still don't appear. If I just look in window, timeline and canvas are grey, not black.
I'm sure (I hope) the solution is quite simple, but at the moment I'm stuck and can't work on the (nearly completed) project.

Trying double-clicking a sequence in the Browser.
Selecting a sequence and hitting Return works nicely, too.

Disappearing timeline and canvas??

I have a project that each time I open it only the browser and viewer show. The timeline and canvas are greyed out in the Window drop down menu and when I try "arrange standard", they still don't show up. If I open a brand new project all four screens are where they are supposed to be?

Double click on a sequence in your Browser and the Canvas and Timeline should appear. Those windows display the current sequence; if no sequence is open, there's nothing for them to display.

Disapperaring Timeline and Canvas

I just got done editing a video for 6-8 hours and I have been saving and all that. Then all the sudden my Timeline and Canvas disappeared. Then I went up to that window bar to click them so they show up again...and what do you know, I'm not able to click them (it's the light grey text instead of the dark, bold text). I can't export the movie or anything...is there anyway in **** I can get these bars back on this project or do I have to completely re-edit??
P.S.
I tried loading my last saved work and even restarting the computer.

Look in the Browser for any Sequence icon and double-click it.

Lost Sequence, Timeline and Canvas!?

I am pulling my hair out today, because after spending hours editing a wedding video, final cut quit unexpectedly. Fortunately i was able to restore my work and made sure i saved it. Then, i accidentally pressed the x button in the corner and got rid of the canvas and timeline. After reading forums, it seems to bring them back i need to click on the sequence button in the browser, however, there was no sequence button in the browser. If i create a new sequence and click on that it brings back the timeline and canvas, but its empty and contains none of my work. If i then try restoring my project to a previous saved version, the timeline and canvas just disappear again.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out on this one!

Working on my first project with FCE, I had a file in the Bin called "Sequence 1" that showed a duration of 00 and zeros across the board, so I figured that I had hit a wrong key combination and created a spurious file. I cleared it
Immediately, my Canvas and Timeline disappeared, and they are greyed out in the Windows menu.
How do I get them back? Restore to before the last 4 hours of capture? <sigh>

The basic principle is you have to have at least one sequence open for the timeline and canvas to display - otherwise, there is no reason for them to hang around and they wander off for a well deserved break.
If you close a project's only open sequence, the icon for it will still be in the Browser. Double clic on it and all should return. the only time you loose edits is when you close FCP and do not save changes. As long as FCP remains open, you should be good to go.
Also, this is a good opportunity to check your AUTO SAVE settings. Set them to what you are willing to lose should the system crash. 15 min works for me.

You cannot drag the effects themselves to the timeline. You add them to a clip in the Viewer, just as you have done.
If the clip was already in the timeline when you opened it in the Viewer (by double-clicking it in the timeline to open it in the Viewer) and then added the reverb effect, there is nothing further to do, you have added the effect to the clip. You don't drag it back to the timeline.
You only have to drag the clip to the timeline if the clip was not already in the timeline (for example, if you opened the clip from the FCE Browser; or set different In and Out points in a master clip to use a different portion of the master clip in a different location in your timeline).
Depending on the effect you add, you may have to render the timeline after adding the effect. But I don't think reverb requires immediate rendering. One other note, you said you were working with an audio clip ... audio clips need to be AIFF (not MP3 or something else) and preferably 16-bit stereo.

what is the problem? Can't you drag the audio region to the right, or is the silence at the beginning of the track missing?
You could mark the measures you want to export by the Cycle region. Then any beginning silence will be included.

I can not open timeline and the canvas can not display because out of memory.

Usually this is because you've got graphics that are cmyk or grayscale not RGB, or that are larger than 4000 by 4000 pixels. Move them on your hard disk so fcp can't find them and make them rgb and resize to an acceptable pixel dimension.

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

Just started using FCE4. My timeline and canvas windows disappeared and are grayed out in the Windows>arrange section. How do I get them back?

Had same problem a month ago. Fixed by this instruction
"Close FCE and go to Home > Library > Preferences. Trash any file (not folder) that has a name including FinalCutExpress or FinalCutPro. Now find the folder Final Cut Express/Pro User Data in the Prefs folder and open it. Trash Prefs, Prof Cache, Obj Cache (sometimes called MOA and POA Cache). Then, of course, repair permissions".
