Canvas window only selects PAN (hand) tool

Has anyone had an issue where after working for a while in Motion, you can select and tool in the tool bar but when you go to work with it in the canvas window it will always change to the hand icon, the PAN tool, and not let you use any tool you select, only the PAN tool. Sometimes this will go away on its own but often I have to quit Motion because it becomes really annoying...

When I get stuck with the hand - happens when going in and out of text every now and then - just press the space bar. Motion doesn't start playing your clip, it just switches over to the pointer. Why? Bug.

How do I temporarily select the hand tool in CS5.5

I recently upgraded to CS5.5 (7.5.3) and it seems that the shortcut for temporarily selecting the hand tool doesn't work any more. It used to be Alt+Spacebar in both text and standard mode. Now I can only get it working in text mode. For some reason Indesign won't let me set it to Alt+Space in standard. Any ideas?

It should be working the same as before (and when not in text mode, spacebar alone should also work). Check to be sure you aren't using some custom or oddball set of keybaord shortcuts (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts...), and maybe try trashing the prefs (see Replace Your Preferences).

Can't pan (hand tool) when zoomed out

Hi,
1. make a document
2. zoom out so you can see the boundary of the canvas
3. try to pan using the "hand tool" -> cant pan, canvas stays in middle
4. - zoom in just enough so the boundary of the canvas exceeds your viewport -> can pan now (but when you zoom out abit after panning to the side, it pops back to middle again)
- OR rotate the zoomed out canvas just so one of the corners exceeds your viewport -> can pan also (but when you reset rotation after some panning, it pops back to middle again)
Lets say i want to draw in the lower right corner of my canvas at a zoom which doesnt make the canvas exceed my viewport but at the same time i want to pan so i have that lower right part of the image near the middle of my screen (so its not lost under my layers window and also so i dont have to draw near the edge of my tablet) but i cant because canvas doesnt exceed my viewport vision.
To get around this so far ive been either rotating the canvas abit and drawing like that so i could pan or i flip the image or move my palettes to the other side for better access but its a mess so i usually resort to having a duplicate viewport for the same image on other monitor which i keep zoomed out to have a view of the whole composition and then paint sort of "blindly" in the first viewport with close zoom which lets me pan and paint somewhat near the middle of screen and watch the result in the second viewport. I was also thinking about making bigger canvas and drawing on a smaller part of it in the middle, but im already working at like 10k res and that would slow things down even more i guess.)
Am i just missing something? Or is there any better workarounds?

You could work in the fullscreen mode (press the F key) which allows panning of the document regardless of size.

I can only get the hand tool on my images

Just downloaded Illustrator CC and now can't work on older files

I figured out I only have to save it as an Illustrator CC file and it works.

Direct Selection or Hand Tool will not Move object with mouse! Frustrated!

Since this recent update, I haven't been to use my mouse to move an image, text, etc. I'm running CC2014 on my Mac, not running Yosemite.
I've tried already:
Clicking some key sequence when opening Indesign so it will clear preferences - did not work.
Restarted my computer - will work for a few minutes then stops
Uninstalled Indesign and reinstalled - nothing
Uninstalled full CC suite and ran the CC cleaner - deleted all instances of Adobe folder on my mac, deleted trash, restarted computer and reinstalled - This did nothing, same issue.
I'm getting really frustrated as I don't really want to use my keyboards arrow keys to move elements. Any solutions to get rid of this annoying problem?

I think that worked! You are my savior! Its been about 2 months dealing with this and it was such a simple, the weirdly unrelated, program that was causing the issue! Do you know why this happens?

Hello, I am experiencing the following problem:
During most sessions with Illustrator, after a while (not sure about the exact amount of time here), once I have selected the hand tool (usually by pressing the "H" key shortcut), Illustrator will not let me select another tool.
The only solution I have arrived at is to save the file (which it does let me do), close and then restart Illustrator.
It's not too much of a frustration, but it does annoy me sometimes. Any ideas?

I get this problem also but it seems more random then switching to the hand tool. Mine just switches to the hand tool itself.
Sometimes I'm able to hit the space bar a few times and the problem stops.
Other times I have to do a full reboot.
I've seen this problem pop up on the forum from time to time but I have never seen a solution.

Crashes leaving only 'Hand' tool available

I have had a problem with Elements 6.0 with 2 different computers and am wondering if anyone can guide me to resolve the issue. In the Editor I frequently only get the 'Hand' tool when selecting other tools. Sometimes it will happen on the first photo I try to edit, sometimes the second and sometimes it takes several - most often when selecting the crop tool. When it happens, I have to restart either the program or the computer. My old comp was an HP on XP; 2.6 mhz processor and 1 gb of memory. Now I use a Dell on Vista 64; quad processor @ 2.4 mhz and 8gb of memory. The same problem occurs on both.
Adobe has informed me that my support has run out. I have been dealing with the problem since the program was new and finally got tired of dealing with it. So now I'm stuck with it. When it works, it's great but I am so frustrated with it I'm ready to find another program to edit with. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks,

Hi Tom,
Jim's suggestion is the way to go. This type of problem usually goes after deleting the saved preference files. Just start PSE to get to the Welcome screen. Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys and click Edit. Keep holding down the keys until you see a window asking Delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File? Click Yes.
Do let us know if this works.

Hand-Tool default selection.

How can I force Adobe Reader X to always use the Hand Tool?
On startup Adobe Reader uses the Select Tool by default and I always must switch to the Hand Tool manually. Is there a way to make this setting automatic?
I know that Reader is supposed to remember the last setting, but it is not doing that. I always have to select the Hand Tool manually.

After much searching on this website, and in my preferences, Here is what I finally found.... Go to:
Edit/Preferences/Accessibility
In the section marked "Other Accessibility Options", de-select the check box labeled "Always display the keyboard selection cursor"
This fixed it for me.

Spacebar Shortcut: Hand Tool Showing But Not Working

Runing the CS6 trial on a Windows 7 Laptop (x64). I was in Photoshop (64), and noticed that when I held down the spacebar to pan the open image, the hand icon would show but the tool will not work. No matter how many times I click and drag, the image stays still. If I select the MANUALLY select the hand tool it works, but the spacebar shortcut key is non-functional. This issue persists across both the 32 & 64 bit versions of Photoshop.
Ideas? Help?

Hello: I am using Photoshop CS6 and the spacebar will not function for me either.
I am creating a circle, duplicate the layer, then i select the subtract front shape ... after this i need to be able to use the spacebar to center my subtracting circle so thatt i end up w/a nice border.
I closed firefox but that didn't work and so then I restarted my computer w/out opening FF at all and still the spacebar will not work.
Rather than the hand icon appearing the only thing that changes is that the small black box that shows the height and width adds the x & y demensions.
Does anyone know if i need to turn something on or off in order to enable the spacebar?

Momentary Hand Tool Not Working

I can select the hand tool from the tool bar or pressing H and can pan around the preview window. But I cannot get the momentary hand tool to work on this new laptop. With the Selection Tool activated, when I press the Space Bar, I get the hand icon, but pressing the left mouse key and dragging does nothing. It is driving me crazy.

Having to go and grab the hand tool from the box was a major pain in the @$$!
I thought is was a windows 7 issue.

Hand tool ieee, tried everything but still isn't working...

Please can someone help me out, I've tried everything!
My hand tool / move tool suddenly stopped working. I unlocked, I restarted, I wiped my settings, I even installed photoshp again. But nothing seems to work. I am totally out of options now and still cannot move my photos in my document. when I start a new document, I still am unable to move my photos. WHAT should I do???? To clarify a bit more. The Photoshop Hand tool (H) helps you to move around inside a magnified image document quickly and works similarly to a scroll bar. It doesn't actually move the image though. It simply navigates you to different parts of your zoomed up image -- very much like the red box does in the Navigator window. IMO, the Hand tool is more of a function rather than an actual tool.
In contrast, the Move Tool is a tool. It's used to actually move and transform selected elements.

Hand tool won't drag image - PSE 11

I use expert mode
hand tool is selected, but it will not drag image. I can vertical scroll with mouse wheel.
I cannot select scroll bar handles,but I can scroll by clicking blank agacent space.
I have reset preferences to defaults but no change.

Try a reset. Click in the tools pallet and select your hand tool, then go to the Tool Options bar at the bottom of the workspace. Click on the dropdown list to the right and choose Reset Tool.

PS CS4 - Hand tool/panning lag after updating OS to Mavericks

I'm on an iMac, from early 2009. With a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory. I'm using Photoshop CS4, and ever since my upgrade to Mavericks the hand tool has a bad lag to it. I've tried updating Java runtime, disabling/enabling OpenGL Drawing, flick panning with no luck. What's happening? I'd really prefer not to reinstall Photoshop, but it's slowing my work down so much that I'm almost willing.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Hand Tool Automatically switches to Select Tool

When viewing a PDF in Acrobat X, the Hand Tool (pan) is available as long as the cursor is moving. When I stop moving the cursor, the Hand Tool switches to the Select Tool without me doing anything. I run a Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Dell Precision computer.

What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Sounds like maybe you have Quick Mask enabled.
Click on the Quick Mask button toward the bottom of the toolbox to get out of Quick Mask mode.

Panning scrolling is going slow and hand tool ain't working when using lasso tool.

Hello Photoshop users,
A couple weeks ago I bought a new PC with windows 8.1. I installed Photoshop CS 5, and it worked really well.
The only thing that isn't working really well, is the (polygonal) lasso tool. When is use it, the scrolling/panning is very slow and the hand tool is also very slow or isn't working at all. Very annoying.
I already called the Adobe customer service, but they don't support Photoshop CS 5 any more (what is a shame for such a expensive program)
Do more people have this problem? Or does anyone know how I can fix this?

I just fired up Photoshop CS5 on my Win 8.1 system and the panning is quick and interactive.
Is your new PC a desktop system? If so, what video card do you have in it? Have you checked the web site of the maker of that video card to see if they have an updated display driver?
For what it's worth, I have an ATI Radeon HD 7850 and the newest display driver (Catalyst 14.4), and like I said, Photoshop CS5 (though not the version I use much any more) appears to work just fine here.
Another thing you can try is to go into the Performance preferences, click the [Advanced Settings...] button in the GPU Settings section, and try different Modes. Make sure to fully close and restart Photoshop after making any changes there, so you'll be sure to be testing the new settings.
