Canvio 1TB - USB connector to drive is horrible, falls out on blink of an eye

I have a Canvio 1TB that I just purchased from Office Max and immediately saw that the connector to the drive was going to be an issue. It is horrible. It falls out even when I don't even touch the drive, and I cannot move the drive _at all_ without the cable falling out. Is there a solution for this or is just the design for these connectors bad from the start?

Jose- I'm not sure how to start a new thread here so I'm piggy backing onto your- I have a HDTC605XK3A1 1Tb portable hard drive that has worked exceptionally well until today.  Today the USB connection inside the case broke loose and I could no longer connect the Toshiba USB cable to it.  I looked at the jack and the flat connector was wonky and sideways and completely loose.  I gave the case a slight shake and it fell inside the case completely loose.  I popped the back of the case off and the connector was floating around inside the case, the soldered connections have come loose.  It's ironic as I bought a second Canvio 1 Tb harddrive last week to back this one up- now I'm thinking of returning it since the box is still sealed- the connection has always been a weak link and never felt very solid.  Is anyone aware if Toshiba can/will fix this (of course it's out of warranty), or if there is a reputable 3rd party repair center that can do it?  Sort of in a panic as it's got nearly a full load of data a really need.
Jose- inregard to your lights- the blue one should light up when tou're ina USB 3.0 plug; white when you're in a USB 2.0.

  • Can't rename a Canvio 2TB USB 3.0 drive

Hi, I've just got 2 Canvio 2TB USB 3.0 drives but couldn't rename either drive in Windows 7's explorer nor Mac OS X's Finder (with the Mac NTFS driver installed). Tho the new name is shown from the drive's "properties" but the name appear in Explorer is still the default "Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive". This is inconvient when I have 2 drives mounted but can't tell which one is which.

I always wipe new external drives clean.
If you have an autorun.inf file in the root, then ljaygould is probably right. It's this line that needs to change.

  • Is there a driver to let a ps2 keyboard plugged in with a usb connector work on my macbook pro 13inch

is there a driver to let a ps2 keyboard plugged in with a usb connector work on my macbook pro 13inch?
I know there are more threads about this subject but none was really an answer.
I got a keyboard (brand medion) with a ps2 connector. i wanted it to connect to my macbook so i bought an ps2 to usb connecter.
wile connected with my macbook the keyboard leds flash one time like they do when you put it in a ps2. but after this just doesn' t work
I think i might miss a driver or its just turned of somwhere in the system. an previous answer was said something about a safe reboot and a lot of codes but thats to hard for me.
    so any good solutions????

I've never found a PS2 to USB adapter that worked, or IIRC I've never found one at all. I have USB TO PS2 but not the other way. Just go out and buy a new keyboard. PS2 is so late 90s/early 2000s

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

You did something wrong. Why was your usb hard drive connected? Did you somehow format the external hard drive? If so, your files are gone.

  • Canvio 1TB drive full

My Canvio 1TB drive is saying that it is full. I only have 6.98 GB of data on my computer, so not sure how this can be unless the drive is rewriting every file every time it backsup instead of overwriting files. What do I do now? How can I delete files to make room for backups. FYI the automatic backup function does not work. I have to manually backup or else there is no record of a backup having taken place. I also tried installing the software upgrade and got an error that the installation location could not be found.

To all having drive full after several backups, the solution to this is to view the size of the image drive on the hard drive. There is a redundancy when doing a full image that will cause multiple images to be saved with essentially the same data. The solution is to delete all images and do a totally new image utllizing the PC Backup option in the menu. I find this is the worst fault of the backup software. I have had no such problem with the file backup. Good luck all in fixing this. Sorry to see that Toshiba has not responded to this issue.

WD My Passport 1TB USB external drive randomly ejects from my iMac and MacBook Pro.
The drive is approximately 4 years old.  When the drive is plugged in, I can see the data.  It appears to be working properly.  The only problem is that everyone of my Apple Machines are ejecting it.   Several years ago, this drive connected to Mac machines with no problems.   I have tried two separate USB cords.  I have updated the firmware.  I have tried it on my MacBook, two different Macbook Pro's, and my iMac.
All give the same result of random ejection of the drive and the error message of:
    Disk Not Ejected Properly
Eject "1TB Passport HD" before disconnecting or turning......
Searching through the web, it seems this is an common/known problem.   Does anyone know the solution?
    Thanks,

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Toshiba 1TB USB 3.5" External Desktop Hard Drive I need help

Hi and I hope you can help me soon.
I have a Toshiba 1TB USB 3.5" External Desktop Hard Drive  which has worked as a back up to my computer without fail and last week I had to get a new computer with W8 installed. I connected this external up to retrieve my backed up folders etc and it was OK at first but now it does not show up under the computer tab but is visble in the devices and printers section of Control panel, I can also see it in the disk management console. It is just the Computer tab where I cannot see it, the problem being that my backup program cannot locate it either and I need to retrieve e-mails etc.
I have a HP desktop running W8 with 8GB of RAM. it is also 64BIT
One other point is that I can access the external using a laptop of my daughters so I know it is OK.
    Thank you for any help.
    Solved!

I reassigned it the drive letter..
Great, Jeff. That's actually not an uncommon problem.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro won't detect my USB 3 external drive

I've got a late 2011 MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite with all available updates installed.
I recently purchased a 1TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 backwards compatible) external hard drive (Seagate) to use for Time Machine backups.
Quite often when I connect the drive to my Mac it doesn't get picked up - i.e. it doesn't appear in Finder or Disk Utility. The drive does get power each time (you can hear it if you put your ear close enough), however the small light on the drive doesn't come on when the problem occurs.
If I unplug it and then plug it back in it sometimes picks it up - often I have to restart a few times for it get picked up.
Other times it connects first time without any problems at all, which is strange!
It was doing this before upgrading from OSX Mavericks to OSX Yosemite.
My USB2.0 500GB external drive connects and appears in Finder without any problems at all.
I've performed the following troubleshooting steps:
    - Connected the drive to different USB ports (no change)
    - Tested the drive on various Windows workstations (works fine every time)
    - Tested with different USB 3.0 cables (no change)
    - Formatted the drive (no change)
    - Tried different USB3.0 drives (same problem occurs)
I'm not really sure what else to try. You can't seem to get just USB2.0 drives any more in the UK (not 1TB or greater).
    Has anyone else had problems?

USB Ports can sometimes be funny like that. If you haven't already, these are some little things you can try:
    - First things first, unplug all your usb devices. Try plugging a device that you're sure works on your MBPR over EACH of the usb ports (just to check if they're both working correctly & supplying power on the mac itself).
    - Check the USB cable's A plug (the end that connects to the mac) and make sure both the contacts are clean, and that the crevass is free from dirt/lint buildup, as it can interfere with a proper connection. (This can happen if you store cables in cases or bags).
    - Sometimes easing the USB plug slightly out from the computer may help mount certain devices. If it DOES mount (abruptly) after this, then see item above on making sure your cable is clean, or swap out usb cable as it may not be working properly & try again with a new cable.
    - Lastly, some devices may need a firmware update to even connect, as with the cases of the Lexar USB3.0 Card Readers and some Seagate USB HD's some folks here are experiencing with their Retinas.
Here's another thread that may also be useful concerning an external Toshiba Canvio HD.
It's not much, I know, but hope this helps, if a little.

  • How to connect my Iridium 9555 to a USB connector on the Mac OS 10.7.3?

How to connect my Iridium 9555 to a USB connector on the Mac OS 10.7.3?
i can not create a new network configuration via USB interface on 10.7.3.

    Doesn't look like they've updated their driver in a while.  October 15 - 2010.
Typically old drivers and 10.7 don't get along so well.  Short answer, unless you know how to write a driver, you might be outa luck.

  • My Book 3.0 (1TB, USB 3.0) detection problem with Envy Phoenix 810-135qe

I have  a My Book 3.0 (1TB, USB 3.0)... The older My Book not the newer one... "My Book Essential" or something like that.
I was using it with W7 x64 backup utility on an older HP desktop (HP Pavilion a6560t) without issue up to the day my new HP Envy 810-135qe arrived. I downloaded the latest drivers from WD support, and the thing PnPed fine off the non-powered USB 3.0 on the back of the 810. However, the 810 drops connection after sleep, hibernation, lock, or simply just over time. I've run diagnostics on the WD and the cables, all checked out fine. I tried shutting off power saving to the USB 3.0s in device manager (just a guess), and that seemed to work for a few weeks, however I'm still having the detection issue periodically. All of my drivers are up to date on the HP side. I'm fully reformatting the WD now to see if that might somehow fix the issue (I'll update in a few days on how that worked out).
Anyone have any idea what's amiss? I suspect something with the BIOS. HP chat support has been no help (they go through the same checks I've already done myself) and they got really spooky on another chat when I asked about adding a SSD as the boot drive (I knew it was an issue from here and other forums).... Handed me off to second tier support, and all they would tell me is that they couldn't tell me anything... Basically, no support for any config except for how it was shipped because it's a "custom build" (yes, buyer's regret big time).
Secondly, anyone running a similar config with a en external back up that's running smoothly? My WD is getting old so I was thinking of one of the newer portable USB 3.0 HDDs (both 2.5 and 3.5). My specs follow.

I have the exact computer (See my signature below.).  I have installed a Samsung EVO 840 500 GB SSD.  It works absolutely great.  Samsung SSD's seem to be the only brand that boots without changing any settings in the UEFI Firmware.  If you decide to buy one, I will be glad to walk you through the installation process.
I also have a "WD My Book Essentials" 2 GB external hard drive.  It works perfectly without making any changes to the BIOS.

  • A big wish for next version iPad - usb external hard drive connection

Can we ask that Apple consider putting a USB connection on the next version of iPad for those who want to use an external hard drive for storing images? When traveling some of us have too many images for the iPad storage and want to archive the RAW versions as well as see what we shot. This USB addition would be perfect for using for this and other applications. It would make the iPad perfect.

Ok, the idea for my request is I teach study abroad classes in photography. We do on the road critiques of the work. If the students stored all their images on those portable hard drives like the wolverine that would allow them to download onto them, they could just show them on the ipad, a much cheaper solution than the air that I would bring along. It's not about storage really when the images are not my own, but I would not store them there anyway like I don't store them on my macbook pro or my desktop but on archive external hard drives. When you shoot over 2000 raw and jpg images on one of these trips, you have to use external hard drives. The Air is gorgeous but I can get 2 ipads for the price of one air at the lower end. I am just really trying to find a way for the students not to have to bring so much equipment along. We have a trip planned to India in another year with them. Money will be an issue for them. I have taught university level photography for 36 years. I know about processing and we use lightroom for our classes. I really did not want to give the whole story just ask for the usb connector so we could see images from hard drives. That's all.

  • Toshiba Store.e Canvio 1TB not showing up on Macbook Pro Retina

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with my external hard rive, it's a Toshiba Store.e Canvio 1TB, HDTC610EW3B1.
It has been working fine on my old Macbook running Mavericks but now on my new one, a retina Macbook Pro running on Yosemite, it won't show up anywhere.
I have checked with disk utility and it's not showing up, also not showing up on the USB in system preferences.
As I said, it works fine on Mavericks
Any ideas on what's happening here, please?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't have either of them to try.
I have spent two hours with Apple technicians and so far nothing we've tried has worked. I now have to speak to a senior Apple technician and see what they say.
A WD My Passport works well but this Toshiba won't work on Macbook Pro Retina with Yosemite...a bit annoying

  • Ipod not showing in itunes, usb connector not recongized on computer

Hi everyone. I have a quick question I'm hoping someone can answer. I have a new ipod nano and am having some probelms with it. When I connected it to my laptop using the USB connector, it will not reconignize the ipod in i-tunes. It will charge the ipod, but it will not pull up in i-tunes, which means I cannot download music on it. I have restarted the computer, and have plugged in a flash drive, which did work and the computer did recongize, so im not sure what else to try.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
