Canvio Connect 2TB External HDD Disconnect

I have a new Canvio Connect. I have been trying to move a large amount of data to it. When I have it hooked up to my laptop PC running Windows 7 and USB 3, after copying for a while, it disconnects and opens the autorun window. I try again, it disconnects again not immediately but an hour or two into the copying. When I moved it to my desktop PC running Windows Vista Ultimate and USB 2, I try copying the same data but it doesn't disconnect not once. Is this something wrong with the drive? A setting in Windows? An issue with USB 3?
Any help would be appreciated. I really want the speed of USB 3.

  • Malware Detected: Canvio Connect 2TB External HDD

I purchased a Canvio Connect 2TB external hard drive yesterday (20 July, 2014). Upon connecting to my Mac the antivirus software ClamXav alerted me that there was malware in the file "autorun.new" in the NTI folder of the external hard drive. The malware is called "INF.Autorun-32". I further tested the "autorun.new" file using VirusTotal, resulting in the file being flagged by the ClamAV (definition: INF.Autorun-32) and McAfee (definition: Generic!atr.b) engines.
Does anyone know if this is a false positive, or malware loaded onto the drive by some unscrupulous vendor?

A quick answer is that the "autorun.new" file will automatically run something (probably setup.exe) when you plug that drive into a Windows machine. It won't run at all under OS X.
The definition has been in the database since early 2009.
The Microsoft malware encyclopedia says this about such malware:
    VirTool:INF/Autorun
Description: This is a detection for a file, called autorun.inf, that can be used by worms when they spread to local, network, or removable drives. The file has instructions to launch the malware automatically when the removable drive is...

    Alert level: Severe
Checking VirusTotal I could only find one submitted file (from Toshiba) as being infected with this and ClamXav was the only scanner to detect it.
is it worth trying to use the hard drive? Should I reformat the drive and would that be sufficient to wipe off any possible malware?
Bottom line is that even if an actual infection, it cannot harm your Mac in any way.
Erasing the drive will permanently eliminate it and you should alway reformat any disk you receive purchase for use with your Mac as they are almost all formatted for Windows and this obviously is.
Partition the drive using Disk Utility with one or more partitions with a GUID Partition Table using the "Options..." button and a Format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • New canvio connect 2tb shows 101mg unallocated space in in computer mgmt admin tools

i have a new canvio connect 2tb external hard drive.  model hdtc720xk3c1.  when ni checked the drive in administrative tools  computer management it shows both  a 101mb unallocated space and a health partion.  It this the master boot record.  Why does it show any unallocated space.  iknow 101mb is small.  Could not get satifactory fron tech support.  I have two other 1tb external hard drives and thers is no   unallocated space
Can someone explain.  Drive is working good

How about "select partition 1" and "active"?
I'd stay away from the Cruzer.  You may be able to create another set of media using this trick.  I'm not sure if it still works with your machine.
    Boot Media
Another thing I'd like to try but haven't: create another bootable USB flash drive using that link I posted up-thread.  It will be blank.  Then make sure you have all the "visibility" options selected for the drive with the recovery image (don't hide system files, etc) and copy the contents of the recovery drive that won't boot to the newly prepared drive.  Does that make any sense?
This kind of thing works for the Win 7 install DVD files.  Just copying them to a properly-prepared flash drive will generate a usable install USB drive.  I've done it many times. It _might_ work with the Lenovo media. Maybe...

  • Add Seagate 2TB External HDD to Oracle VM  /OVS

    Hello guys,
I have got a empty Seagate 2TB External HDD with NTFS partition And I want to add this as addition storage to my Oracle VM Server in OVS partition.
Also this 2TB USB HDD is solely dedicated to Oracle VM so I am not bothering about Any other operating systems.
To accomplish my this purpose I have gone through so many online forum to convert Seagate ntfs partition to Linux partition. But I couldn't find success.
So Here my questions are :
    1) Is it possible to convert USB HDD ntfs partition to Oracle VM Server supported partition that can run VM Machine on it ?
    2) If Answer is Yes, then Could you explain me how do I do that ?
    Many Thanks

  • HP HD3200 2tb external hdd reformatting itself

I bought the HP HD3200 2tb external hdd just about a year ago and it has worked famously until very recently. Starting about a week ago the drive would randomly stop being read by my computer and after going into disk management the space on the drive has somehow transformed into unallocated.  The only option I have at that point is to reformat the drive and start over.  On top of that if I reformat the drive I then have to run a test disk to adjust the aprtition table otherwise it becomes formatted but simply does not show up in the browser.  This has happened 3 times now and I would like to find a permanent solution before I lose something I can't replace.  Any thoughts on why this has started to happen or how i might fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Take the drive to a Windows PC and install Data Rescue ($100) and let it work on reading the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, outputing the recovered files to another large external hard drive (formatted exFaT on the PC, not on the Mac and not NTFS!)
This is going to take hours to complete, so buy the software upfront and get it over with.
Once it's finished you can hook up the drive to the Mac and it will read it, no NTFS reading/writing software required.
If the PC your using is a Windows XP machine and there is no exFAT, then install the free exFAT for XP from Microsoft first.
Take a second to learn about drives and formatting, it's not wise to use NTFS software as you see now the problem.

  • When syncing iPhone with iTunes, my external hdd disconnects

Hi! After I updated iTunes to the last version (9.1.1) appears one problem — when i connect my iPhone 3G 16Gb and iTunes is launched, it starts to sync as it is intended — and my external usb hdd disconnects. And it is required to restart the whole system with disconnected iphone to connect hdd as usual.
The itunes music library is on this hdd. I have mac-mini 1.83 core 2 duo with 4Gb ram and latest update of 10.5 Leopard.
I also recently installed fruux for syncing this mac-mini with my macbook, and may be it is the reason, but I uninstalled it fully (as writen on fruux website), but the problem is still as is.
Please, help — this problem makes my iphone fully isolated from my iTunes library :(((

Make sure the following setting is unchecked:
    Lightroom / Preferences / Import:
[ ] Show import dialog when a memory card is detected
Report back if it is already unchecked and LR still starts up.

  • IMac keep ejecting my 2TB external HDD but in safe boot mode it is totally fine. How to resolve the problem?

    Hi,
I have WD 2 TB external HDD. It has two partitions, one I use for my time machiine backup and one for my personal files and documents. Recently the iMac keeps ejecting the external HDD as soon as it gets connected to the iMac. I tried to reboot the computer in safe boot mode (by holding down the shift key at startup) and found out that problem is not there anymore. I can access my external HDD there and it never ejects the HDD.
It seems like the HDD is fine, the problem is with the iMac. Can anybody please give any solution to this problem?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Allan for your reply!
It makes sence that there must be some log in /start up item which is causing this problem. I went System Preference>Users & Groups> Login items> disabled all the items there to make sure, and restarted the computer but the problem is still there
Is there any other way to stop/configure the log in items?
    Thanks again!

  • Unable to access user account files in OS X when connected as external HDD

    Hi experts,
I'm having a problem with my mac mini (McM). I'm using my McM as an external HDD and it has mutiple user accounts on it. While connected from another mac, I'm able to see the McM listed in the left pane as an external device. When i select the users folder, I'm able to see the lists of my user accounts in it. The real problem starts when I try to look for my files in the default folders of my account in the 'Users' folder. This would be like Users --> My account --> (Desktop/Downloads/Documents...etc).  All the folders here are shown with a RED MINUS DOT on the folder icon with nothing inside it.
I have tried changing the users permissions for the folder but it doesn't allow and remains to be disabled. Tried changing the file permissions on the HDD itself, by selecting "Ignoring ownership on this volume" option but running into errors. Also tried copying the entire folder and sub-folders but the data is not available after the copy is done.
So I'm now looking for a solution as to how could I take a back up of my files from the McM HDD without having to format it. There's some really important data that I can't afford to loose. All of my data is stored in the default folders itself and I haven't created any additional/separate folders.
    All help appreciated. Thanks.

    What errors?

  • How Best to Partition a 2Tb External HDD

I've built a 2Tb external hard drive that supports both Firewire and USB. I want to be able to use it with my MacBook, as well as a Windows 7 Desktop. Would it be best to split to drive into two equal partitions and format each partition to the respective OS file systems? The Disk Utility in 10.4 seems to prevent me from doing this. I am expecting all the parts and SW soon to upgrade this machine to 10.6. Is the DIsk Utility in Snow Leopard different than the one in Tiger? Thanks for any help you might offer.

Tiger on Intel Macs will support such a configuration. See the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After the formatting has completed re-select the main drive entry in the left sidebar and click on the Partition tab in DU's main window. Use the Partition Scheme dropdown menu to create two partitions. Resize the partitions to your liking. The second partition should be the one you will use with Windows. Select that partition and set the Format Type to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.
You should now have two volumes. The first is for use on the Mac. The second is for Windows. When you boot into Windows you may want to reformat the Windows volume to use NTFS instead of FAT32. Note that NTFS is a read-only filesystem in OS X.

  • Toshiba 500gig usb external HDD disconnects at the drop of a pin

    Hi,
I have one of the new USB powered portable usb drives from Toshiba. It is a 500gig unit. It has worked flawlessly up until about the last couple weeks. Since this time is disconnects very easly and sometimes is not useable because it disconnects too much. Is this a common problem with these smaller drives that connect with the regualr usb cord, and is there any fix for it?

Some people find that these types of drives need more power than a single usb cable can supply.  The Western Digital Passport also has this problem.  Using a Dual USB cable helps a lot in this situation by drawing power from two USB ports instead of one.
Addendum Friday 1:30 PM CDT:  Just make sure that the dual cable you get has the correct plug for your external hard drive.  The one I linked to above works with the WDC Passports, but I do NOT know if it has the correct plug for the Toshiba External Drives.  I would advise against using one that works as an extension to the existing cable as the additional connection combined with the additional length would probably defeat the purpose due to the power loss they would bring into the scenario.  You need a cable that attaches directly to the USB ports on the laptop and the external drive.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Secure External HDD disconnects from computer

I have just bought an external secure thinkpad USB 3.0  HD. I am using Windows 8.1
I am having problems as the drive will not stay connected. Every few minutes it will simply disconnect. I have made the power adjustments suggested in blogs but no luck.  sometimes when disconnected the HD will simply click away making me wonder if it is faulty. To reconnect I must pull out the USB and put in passworkd
At the moment the drive is basically unusable. (aghhhhhhhh!!!)
Has anyone had similar problems and was there a cure
    thanks

  • Connecting USB external HDD causes temperature to soar

Having had my broken Mac Mini fixed, I'm now resuming usage. One "interesting" fact I've noticed is that whenever an external USB HDD is switched on, the Mac's temperature soars. It was sitting, according to smcFanControl, at c. 34C whilst doing general browsing. Turning on the HDD and (over half an hour) the temperature rose to 64C. Ejecting the HDD (without even powering it off) had an instantaneous effect and the temperature plummeted back down to what it had been (first 10C in a minute, second 10C in five further minutes, etc).
I'm guessing that the second CPU core kicked in, or similar, causing the disproportionate thermal increase? Or is this a fault of some kind? It's completely repeatable.

It seems possible that the Mini kicked into high gear to do Spotlight indexing on the drive. You could go to System Preferences > Spotlight and designate that drive as one that you don't want indexed and see if that makes a difference.
If it doesn't, then my next best guess would be that the external drive is drawing power from the usb or firewire bus, and this is heating up the Mini's internal power supply -- though I admit that is a long shot.
