Capabilities of Photos App and Aperture

I see a lot of discussion about the new Photos app as being a replacement for Aperture, but most of these discussions seem to ignore many of the key capabilities which make Aperture important to many professionals. And the idea that many of these have been removed but will reappear sometime in the future is ridiculous--nobody could run a business using a tool like that. Are you supposed to go out of business until the time in the future when Apple reintroduces the feature you depended on?
I'm also a little skeptical about how "modern" the app is and what a "streamlined interface" it has if it lacks many key features that already existed in the present software and which professional photographers and heavy Aperture users counted on. It's easy to "streamline" an interface if you just remove functionality. What many of the "reviewers" do not seem to understand is that it could take a year of more of heavy work to reconstruct an existing Aperture library with all that it contains because it is not just a hierarchical collection of pictures with keywords.
If you've been looking at Photos, maybe you can fill in some of the gaps in knowledge of features.
--Will Photos retain the edits of Photos in an Aperture library? Pros may have tens of thousands of photos (or more) with edits done over the past 8 years. Suggesting all of these need to be redone is kind of ridiculous. And why would any photographer ever trust an Apple product again if a corporate move resulted in that!
--If some "tools" are missing, then all of them might as well be missing as far as importing an Aperture library since you wouldn't really know which of your tens of thousands of pictures which had been edited were affected. You couldn't trust the "versions" in your library as some would be missing some of the edits. Is there a list of which "tools" are missing? Almost all of them are pretty heavily used by large numbers of people.
--I hear that the "Curves" tool is missing. What? This is one of the most heavily used tools of all, and one that was added to Aperture because of popular demand. What happens to all the edits done with the Curves tool? Do they disappear, making the library of edits useless? What possible reason would there be for removing something that important?
--Does Photos feature a Web journal which allows collections of photos to be output as Web pages to be shared with clients or others?
--Can I exports groups of files in any size and format (RAW, jpeg, TIFF, PNG., etc.)? You have to be able to do this for the product to be of any use to a professional at all.
--Can I take advantage of multiple monitors to do things like show sets of photos and controls on one monitor and a full-screen image on the other?
--I've hear the flags feature is gone. Why? What happens to all the images I've flagged through the years for one reason or another? Are pros supposed to go through 100,000 images they have stored in their library and flag them all again?
--I've heard that "Stacks" is missing. For professional sports photographers, that is essential. You take bursts of images, you want them stacked on import so it's easy to pick the best from a burst and quickly get rid of the best. Why on earth would this be removed? It was one of the key selling points in early Aperture marketing and a heavily used feature.
--Does the new app show the focus points, hot and cold areas, etc. on the pictures if so desired?
--What happens to books, smart albums, Web journals, projects, folder, albums, etc. One heck of a lot of time has gone in to creating all of these.
--Can I search using any metadata, keyword, etc.?
--Can I customize my display to see the metadata I want in a particular situation. I certainly don't want to see all of it, but there are key fields which may be especially important.
--How long would it take to "import" an Aperture library of, say, 500 gigabytes, into Photos? Would this would require another storage medium to store the new library as well as the old? I'm a little wary here, as the Aperture to Aperture 3 upgrade took 24 hours or more for many people.
--Is iCloud storage of photos really practical for professionals who may have libraries of a terabyte or more? How exactly would all of this information migrate into the cloud? Who's got the bandwith for that?
Anyone who could do a proper comparison of Aperture and Photos, from the perspective of a sophisticated Aperture, and not just gush about how it's an improvement on iPhoto, would be much appreciated. I haven't been able to figure much out from what I've seen so far.

The app is in beta and we're not allowed comment. That's standard policy. What you can glean from reading around the web is the same that we can. My read on what I've seen: It's a step-up for iPhoto uses but for Pro users it's time to look elsewhere. It's not a robust Pro tool.

To add to Nick's comments, "Other" is typically approximately 1 gigabyte.  Occasionally for some users, it gets much (many times) bigger because they have some corrupt files.  If that's the case, it's best to restore the iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into (current) iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" on the right.  If restoring from the iPhone backup does not help, then restore (again) as new and then manaully sync the iPhone.

  • Will the new photos app and icloud photos library support all formats of pics and videos from my iphoto library?

I will be migrating my whole 200gb iPhoto library 9.5.1 mavericks over to Yosemite iPhoto 9.6.1 and then migrate to the new photos app and hopefully to the icloud.photos online. Does this all support all of my formats such as AVI videos in my iPhoto library. I don't want to lose those through migration.

I have this 31% issue too - when I attempt to update my iPhoto library to the new Photo app.
I have a few libraries - one on my mac, and two on a NAS. I access the NAS via wifi.
The mac based library did update, but the two network albums have yet to be successfully migrated over to Photo.
    It's driving me insane!!!

  • TouchSmart Photo App and Support for PNG files?

Please, somebody tell me that I'm crazy and that the TouchSmart Photo app really can be made to support PNG file types! If not, who designed this software!? Can't browse the network for content stored on an HP MediaSmart Server. Can't view PNG files in the Photo application. What else can't this software do!?

    Hi ChrisT,
Thanks for the suggestion. I went to:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4148...
Which is the software update page for my model. I see 10 items under Software Solutions, 8 of which are just video tutorial updates, not actual application updates (and none of those are for the Photo App). The two application updates are:
HP TouchSmart Recipe Box Application Update
    HP Support Assistant Application Update
So, are you saying that PNG file types are supported in some versions of the Photo App and I don't have the correct version? Or in other words, what am I missing?
    Cheers,

So if i update my iphone, I will lose all of my photos, apps and music..correct? None of these things are saved on my computer [except some of the music]...

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would any digital camera.  this is covered in the manual.

You should transfer all itunes purchases from the iphone to the computer:  File>Transfer Purchases.

  • Would I be able to migrate to new Photos app from Aperture 2.x ?

Although I've been trying to keep up on upgrading HW and SW, I have some old Aperture libraries, but all under Aperture 2.x.
Does anybody knows if Photos would take Aperture 2.x libraries?
If not, does that mean I need to rush and buy Aperture 3 before it is taken out of the Mac App Store?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I contacted Apple Support with the same question.
First level support tech told me it "would be fine", should work, "probably be okay" under repeated questions about how certain he was.  I asked to be transferred to Pro Apps technical support. This guy understood my dilemma. I cannot, and frankly should not, have to justify paying for Aperture 3.6 at this juncture, considering it will be discontinued. But, I want to be certain that my Aperture 2.X libraries will migrate to Photos.  I no longer require the editing power of Aperture, but of course, do not want to lose access to my thousands of photos in Aperture 2.0.
It was as if this tech in Pro, had not been asked this question before. He consulted "senior" support reps and still was not able to definitively say.
1.) Recommendations Apple has:  Bite the bullet and pay for Aperture 3.6. Be certain that way.
2.) Join the Public Beta program (new, separate partition)  and "try" Photos migration.  I can't do this because of hardware constraints.  Another external hard drive would cost as much as the software for example.
3.) Take my Aperture libraries on a backup drive to an Apple store and ask them to update them to Aperture 3.6 format.   <  This alone tells me there is an update process and a difference in the database organization and perhaps foretells that migration from 2.X will not work.
Apple is supposed to get back to me with a definitive answer.  I am frankly not surprised as most manufacturers assume users, especially "pro" users will keep up to date and Aperture 2.X is, what, five years old?
Will repost when I hear back from pro support.

  • Photos app vs Aperture, for adepts?

    Hi guys,
Are all Aperture adjustment tools available to a semi-adept like myself who migrates to the Photos app? Can I adjust my images in Photos to the same level of precision and have as many options (and stay within the Apple universe), or do I have to look elsewhere, like Lightroom? I need high-end software.
I'm offered a Beta version, but not sure whether it's for me. BTW, I have just installed Yosemite and am keeping my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Raphael

    Hi Raphael,
With the _coming_ demise of Aperture, users are either:
    - staying with Aperture for a bit: it works well; migrating the database is, _at best_, tricky, incomplete, and inefficient; Aperture will continue to work well under Yosemite for as long as you have a Mac running Yosemite, or
    - using another program/programs for the digital asset management and digital camera image editing that they used to do in Aperture.
Those who are moving are either:
    - putting only or mostly new/recent digital camera files into another program(s), and developing a workflow with the other program(s), or
    - porting all of their Originals, all of their adjusted Versions, and as much of the database as possible into another program.
The other programs that are most often mentioned as being useful to Aperture users are:
    - Adobe's Lightroom.  Functional overlap with Aperture is nearly 100%.  Widely used.  More support and resources than you can use.  Aperture users general don't like being constrained by a modal interface, and don't like the actual interface.
    - Capture One Pro.  Functions similar to Aperture.  Well-liked by those who use it.  Strong editing tools.  Less strong digital asset management tools.  Very much smaller installed user base.  Imho, a more Aperture-like experience than LR.
    - Apple Photos for OS X.  Properly understood as the successor program to iPhoto (it is _not_ a successor to Aperture).  The design emphasis is on ease of use.  Adequate editing tools.  Strong but non-customizable digital asset management tools.
All three feature non-destructive workflows (your digital camera files are never over-written).  All of them — like Aperture — store _the information needed to create new files_, rather than new files themselves.

If I am to switch, I would like to switch to a software that is elegantly thought out, that offers at least as much control as Aperture does, and that is widely supported and understood; and that has a forum like this one with competent people responding.
    An excellent list.  Imho:
    - LR is the least elegant of the three.
    - LR and C1Pro offer as much editing control as Aperture.  Neither offers as much digital asset management options/utility.
    - All are (or will be) well supported.  LR is much more used and discussed, and has many more supporting materials available, than any of the others.
    - This forum provided — not just my opinion, and something I'm proud of — a rare combination of quick response, high-quality content, and little chaff.  There are (afaik) good forums for both LR and for C1Pro.

  • Photos app and Calendar not working correctly since upgrade.

I was trying to insert a photo into a Word document. When I go to the finder the photos app is grey. I cannot chose it or find my pics. Why? I tried dragging and dropping. That doesn't work either.
My calendar has been working fine since I upgraded, until today. I powered on today and my calendar is blank. I have TONS of stuff saved on there. I have gone through the preferences and checked all settings, everything looks fine. I even re-entered things just to let it refresh, to no avail. Any suggestions.
I am on a Macbook Pro (early 2013).l
    Thank you

Do you have a backup? If so, try this for Calendar.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Calendars and restore from the backup.

  • Can I delete photos app and start again? How?

Ok, I've been really daft and did not ever know that there was a photo trash can in iPhoto. So for years in iPhoto I've been deleting or rather just removing photos and not thinking much of it.
Just did my mac updates and notice I now have Photo. Open up and wow I now have 100s of photos that I thought I had deleted, some years ago.
With over 16,000 photos in total this is not a job I want to go through sifting and deleting the rubbish again.
I opened my time machine but can't work out how to go back. Is there any way of wiping photo and then starting again? It didn't ask me about importing or merging from iPhoto it seemed to have done it on its own. If the photos are still in iPhoto can I delete photo and reinstall after fixing the issue in iPhoto?
Afraid to do something and mess it up further and so looking for advice from someone who actually knows what they are doing!
    Thank you!

You can't delete the Photos app as it's part of the system.  You can continue to use iPhoto and your iPhoto library.  The iPhoto app is still in the Applications folder. If it's iPhoto 9.6.1 it will work with 10.10.3. If it's not try getting 9.6.1 from the App Store following Terence Devlin's instructions below:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Regarding the "deleted" photos did you systematically empty the iPhoto Trash bin each time you delete photos?

  • Photos App and Wallpaper Problems in iOS8

I'm a fan of photos of Apple because of its retina display (I'm using an iPod touch 5th Gen 32gb)... it gives my images the best quality and real sharpness of every image. But when I updated to iOS8. I found some tiny problems.. well it is tiny, but for a Multimedia artist like me.. its a very BIG DEAL.
    The Photos App:
Whenever I open up some of my photography in the Photos app, it loses it's sharpness. it is not that sharp, and to sharpen it.. i had to zoom in and zoom out.  Unlike in the older versions of iOS, the photos (in any given resolution) will be automatically sharp when I slide through my images. In iOS8, it simply don't and it is really frustrating. Try it yourself to see the difference.
note: my photography is straight from my DSLR camera then I just put it in my iPod. You may suggest to resize it, yeah I do, but in iOS7 the sharpness is really good.
    Changing my wallpaper:
I always make my own high quality wallpaper through my photography and my works. And my wallpaper always looked very sharp and great. I haven't changed my wallpaper since I updated to iOS8, last night I created a new wallpaper (in Photoshop) and when I changed it to my iPod... the quality is just not that good. (Problem is similar to the Photos app) The sharpness is just not there. I can't appreciate my "Retina" display anymore.
Hope you guys hear this out and fix it.
P.S. in iOS7 I do the similar stuff and it works just fine, in iOS8 it really doesn't and it is really irritating.

Hi.  My wife and I share a macbook, with different user profiles.  To date we've been using the one itunes, on my wife's profile, but it plays up a bit, gets us confused etc, so I've set up a new itunes on my profile and am trying to import my music, apps and photos from my wife's itunes via home sharing (using her apple id in both for home sharing purposes).  But I can't seem to find her itunes library in my itunes library.  Any ideas?

Does anybody know how I can get iTunes to find all of my songs it their new folder without me doing it one by one myself? Thanks

  • Can someone explain the difference between photos app and iphoto for iphone?

I recently downloaded the iphoto app to my iPhone 4s. I am hoping to clear up some space on my iphone and I deleted some pics from what I thought was the camera roll within iphoto. I noticed later that while attempting to change my wallpaper, I noticed that pics I thought I deleted were still on the phone as evidenced by their availability to be used as wallpaper. I checked that I had selected cameral roll and not photostream, where it would make sense the photos would still be there. When I left settings I noticed that I have iphoto and the phots app on my iphone. Do I need both? And if i want to delete photos, do I need to delete photos from the cameral roll within iphoto AND the photos app???? I really need someone to make sense of all this photo business!

The "Photos" application is built into the phone and is meant only for viewing and making small edits (crop, auto-enhance, etc.) to photos in your Camera Roll and other photos synced onto your phone via iTunes.
iPhoto for iOS is a new application which is meant to allow you to organize your photos, share them via sideshows or "journals" and make mode substantial edits (contrast, brightness, sharpness, photo effects, etc.)
Keep in mind that iPhoto or any other app from the App Store does not have the ability to delete photos from your Camera Roll. What you did is probably hit the x icon which hides the photo from your iPhoto library but it remains in your Camera Roll. To delete photos, they must be deleted from the Photos app. Oce they are deleted from your Camera Roll they will no longer show up in iPhoto.

  • Applescript, the new Photos app and Instagram

I'm using applescript to add images to the new (Yosemite) Photos app. I'm using the following code:
    tell application "Photos"
set ImageFile to POSIX file "~/photos/test.jpg"
         set DestinationAlbumName to "Instagram"
if not (exists container named DestinationAlbumName) then
              make new album named DestinationAlbumName
         end if
import ImageFile into container named DestinationAlbumName with skip check duplicates
    end tell
On the face of it this all works just dandy; album is created if it needs to be, image comes in fine. However, heading on over to Instagram, iphone of iPad, when I look for the image I've just added it's not there, nor is the album. It's in the Photos app on the phone and tablet, just Instagram refuses to see it.
If I add an album with an image in it by hand, Instagram sees it.
Apple have precious little to offer by way of examples on this, does anyone have anything to offer?
    Thanks.

If I delete then create the folder by hand back on the Macbook where I ran the script, I can then see it when I browse the Photo library back in Instagram.
Try doing that and then running a script to get the properties of that folder.
    tell application "Photos"
      properties of container named "Instagram"
    end tell
Look at the result. Then delete that folder, run your import script and create the folder, then get the properties again. Compare the two property lists. Is there any difference?
