Capacity Issues in iDVD '09

I am trying to burn the first season of Justified onto DVD. I made one copy of the entire season already for a cousin using "Burn" for OS X, which works but was undesirable because I could not figure out how to control setup of the DVD menu, etc.
So, now I'm trying to do it the second time around to ship to my mother, using iDVD. Problem here is, no matter what I do I cannot seem to get more than a single episode onto an entire DVD disc.
iDVD says the Single Layer Disc capacity is 4.2 Gb. Which is nice, but the discs I purchased are actually 4.7 Gb. So, that's discrepancy #1.
Second discrepancy, I find elsewhere in this forum that with Single Layer on the lowest quality level I should be able to achieve 120 minutes worth of video, which would correspond to roughly 3 television episodes, where those episodes are about 40 minutes in length each.
Regardless of how many minutes are in my episodes, iDVD says it's at capacity after 40 to 65 minutes of video have been added.
Now, remembering that I did this once already with Burn, I'm a little confused. Why would Burn (the application, a noun), be able to convert 4 episodes to Mpeg-2 format and fit it all on one disk, but iDVD cannot convert 2 episodes and fit it on a disk? If the destination format is the same (mpeg-2), and the make and capacity of the disc being utilized is the same, I'm confused why I should be getting such a drastic reduction in capacity?
DVD Menus are definitely desirable, but at the cost of 4 times the amount of discs, maybe not so much. Please tell me there is something I am missing?

Welcome to the forums!
You may have set the wrong encoding:
iDVD encoding settings:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • IPad freezing after IOS4.2 - capacity issue?

I had roughly 1GB of available capacity on my 16GB iPad BEFORE installing the 4.2 update. I had a large photo library, mainly photos downloaded directly to the iPad from a digital camera, ie not synced to the iPad from my iMac via iTunes/iPhoto.
Anyone else have these general conditions prior to the install/update? I suspect that the low capacity may play a role here...

My iPad froze on update. I had to eventually kill iTunes (not responding, and not responding to a normal Quit from Activity Monitor). I believe it did not manage to complete the backup cycle. I had to reset my iPad. After about two hours of showing an Apple and an unmoving progress bar, my iPad started working again.
I suspect several things. I had very little disk space left on my Mac mini (~20GB). The Backup folder for my iPad and iPhone exceeded 30GB. Individual backups for iPad were over 13GB. I also had about 5 GB of photos from my camera on my iPad, put there with the camera connector. I suspect that was implicated also, and intend to remove them. However I did have a fair amount of space left on my 64 GB iPad.
Over the next evening I will correct all the capacity issues I can see, and resync my iPad. At the moment, the Video app and the iPod app claim they are cancelling sync, and are not able to be used. iPhoto took a fair while to update photos.I suspect I will find other apps in the same state.

  • Syncing and capacity issues - how do I fully delete certain iPod items?

Perhaps I just don't know how to properly delete files off my iPod. In short: Podcast items that I manually drag from iTunes to a playlist in my iPod don't seem to fully delete after I delete them from the playlist. And I don't see them listed in my ipod podcast area.
The bulk of my ipod consists of music I manually tossed on there. That portion never gets synced. And I haven't added new music in a long time.
I have three different podcasts programs I auto sync the last 3 episodes of (it was 5, but I reduced it due to the problem I'm describing in this post).
I also manually drag (via iTunes) some podcasts from my laptop to a playlist on the iPod. I do this once a week. The shows I move over aren't always the same, this is one reason I don't auto sync them. (i.e. I might decide to move over a really old episode of a program I rarely listen to.)
The podcasts I manually moved to the playlist seem to only show up in the playlist. They don't appear in the Podcast or Music sections.
Each week I also delete the contents of the playlist (by going into the playlist and deleting the listing of the playlist's contents).
*If I delete the (manually moved) item from the playlist then it appears that it doesn't free up the space*. Since I can't find any other mention of the item on the iPod, how do I delete it?
I'm aware that if I drag an item from iTunes to the iPod's podcast section, then a entry for the item shows up there. And then I can delete the item and get that space back. Maybe this is the proper way to move files and perhaps I'll start doing that. But at this point I just want to fully delete all the old items I can't see anymore.
Because of this problem I've had to delete more and more other items from my iPod to free up space for the new podcasts I want to manually move over. I'm getting tired of doing this. Thus, this post.
If need be I can provide examples of the exact steps I take, space left, etc.
Using iTunes 10.1.2. I've read some threads in the past about capacity issues that started cropping up in 10 or so. I don't know if my problems are related.
    Thanks,

Note: by using a third-party iPod file browser, I'm able to easily see all the hidden podcasts (they add up to many many megabytes). However, the one I'm currently using, Senuti (free version) doesn't seem to allow track deletion from its browser, it just lets me transfer from the browser to iTunes.
Is there a (free?) file browser that will let me delete tracks?
Also, I haven't examined all of the hidden tracks, but for two of the podcasts shows, it looks like the oldest hidden ones were added on 6/19/2010. iTunes 9.2 released on 6/16/2010 and I likely installed it around that time.

  • 80GB HDD - 'Available' Capacity Issue

I've just done a complete re-install of OS X Tiger and i have a bit of a Hard Disk capacity issue/question...
I've got an 80GB drive, but when i click 'Get Info' on the HDD icon it says:
    Capacity - 74.41 GB
    Available - 64.98 GB
    Used - 9.42 GB
Am i missing a few GB's there?! I would have thought the Capacity should be 80 GB, with 9.42 GB used leaving me with 70.58... No?
Please note i haven't added any files or programs - it's just pure 'factory condition'.

Am i missing a few GB's there?! I would have thought the Capacity should be 80 GB, with 9.42 GB used leaving me with 70.58... No?
    No.
I don't think your hard drive is missing any space.
For example, my 100 GB hard drive shows up in "get info" as having a 93.04 GB capacity.

  • 100GB HDD - 'Available' Capacity Issue

Apple forgot to put a disclaimer about the available capacity issue on its 12 inch and 15 inch G4 powerbooks that come loaded with a 100 gig hard drive and 1 gig of ram. Check the outside of your box, it is not on there. I also have a imac G5 and it comes with this disclaimer, as does every other Apple computer. Thinking they solved the available capacity issue, I then opened the box, turned on the computer, went up to the blue apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen, clicked on about this mac, then clicked on more info, then went to the hard drive info, only to find, I had less capacity then I was led to believe I had purchased. Any one out there with this same issue?

    MIR --
Thinking they solved the available capacity issue....
There is no "available capacity issue" to be solved. The difference between the stated capacity of your 100GB hard drive and it's actual 93.13GB capacity is simply the result of how drives are marketed. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk (discussion under the heading "The Difference Between 'Marketing Capacity' and Actual Capacity").
But you already know this, as that's what RD told you just earlier, and what others have told you on five separate occasions in response to your previous five posts on this exact same subject. See:

I don't know how to change the location of the backup files, but on my n900 it uses the internal memory.
I have not used a microSD card on my N900 so far, maybe it selects the location when the backup program is used for the first time?
The problem with the "no memory card inserted" looks like a bug though.

OK, so it's working the way it is supposed to. With any device that is retrieving photo stream photos from the cloud, it will only retrieve back to the time that photo stream was turned on for that device.
Now that you have it turned on, any photos you take will show up in photo stream for either device from now on.
    Hope that helps!

  • Long term Planning - capacity issue

Does any one have a way of running Long Term Planning in SAP.
When checking CM38 for production volumes, the start dates of
the planned orders always fall into the previous month from the
forecast (the monthly forecast is always placed on the first day
of the period and due to lead time scheduling the planned orders
to satisfy that forecast fall into the previous month). If i check the
capacity it show in same month for different month requirment.( it is clubing the requirment)
Though capacity scene was created from June to August , system shows loading from May month.
Month wise loading and availability are shown clubbed in capacity planning sheet.
    Thanks in advanc....

    Mukesh,
To change the forecast from occuring at start of period ( month) you can always select the Schedule line Tab in MD61,MD62. then select period indicator as Day format as shown below
    Per. Ind          Date              Qty
    D     17.05.2010     30
    D     15.06.2010     40
    D     15.07.2010     50
System will then plan PIR (forcast) based on dates assigned by user instead of being placed on the first day
of the period. This will prevent forcast to fall into the previous month. Also it will resolve the capacity issue you are facing.
If you have more questions please come back.
    thanks,

  • IDVD Status  DVD Capacity issue

The DVD Capacity indicates 2.6GB & 77 min. when I start the burn process to create .img file. When it finishes (& usually fails) the DVD capacity indicates 3.6GB and 77 minutes. I've never had this problem before.
My iMovie consists of 786 jpg photos with subtitles on each and background music. iDVD will create the .img file OK if have no chapter markers. As soon as I add chapter markers I get the -34506 error. I tried exporting to QT and back. I've tried exporting to tape and back with same results. While working on this project I've done iMovies consisting of 99% imported video, 80 min. long and everything goes fine. I do all the delete pref.,repair permissions, clear caches, restart, etc.
Any idea why the DVD capacity indicates such a file increase? Must have something to do with "all photos". It appears about 1 hr of photos is the limit in iMovie. Why? I have plenty of free space on the hard drives. I wonder if my memory of 768MB is a limiting factor. Thanks Terry
Power Mac G4 1 GHz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    <if my memory of 768MB is a limiting factor.>
are you talking about remaining memory on your HD? if so it sure would be a problem.
    < indicates 2.6GB & 77 min... DVD capacity indicates 3.6GB and 77 minutes>
I'm not sure on this one, but I think that when iDVD encodes your movie, it resizes it to make the best use of the entire DVD space which is under 4GB (out of 4.7GB). This way it chooses the best size to provide the best quality /VS available space on the DVD given the entire numbers of files.
< I've tried exporting to tape and back with same results.>
instead of exporting the file (I assume from iMovie), why not use the file inside the iMovie Projectfile? No need to export anything. Save one step.
    Chapters
1-Once you have saved your project in iMovie, you can select the iMovie file(wherever located- movies folder) while pressing the "control" key. You will be getting a list, containing "show package content".
2-if you have created chapters in iMovie, then select content>shared file>iDVD>XXX.mov.
(If you did not create any chapter, the folder iDVD would not exist. skip to "No chapters" below)
3-this file named XXXX.mox (XXX =the name of your file) you can now drag & drop over the iDVD window.
it will do 2 things. a- it will create one link called xxx.mov for selection of that movie. b- it will also create a folder called "scenes selection" containing all chapters in the iMovie.
all that without having to export your iMovie to QT.
    No Chapters
If you did not have any chapters, thenn you can still follow the same as step 1 and 2 above, but from content>cache>timeline.mov.
This file contains the movie without any chapters.
    try that
also look at what Silly Rabbit suggested me here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=689798&tstart=0
I have done what he suggested, and I am still in the encoding process, but it seems to have gone further than before!

  • Hard Drive Capacity Issue -- 51 GBs missing btwn utilized and avail space

    I have a 200MB internal hard drive.
    My SYSTEM PROFILER states:
Capacity=185.99GB (which I understand due to system use, etc)
    Available= 26.25 GB (odd)
This available space reading seemed odd as I don't have much data on the HD (transferred files using Migration Assistant from a 80gb, 1.67ghz older G4 laptop).
So I went to the ACTIVITY MONITOR and looked at DISK USAGE at it states:
    Space Utilized= 99.14 GB
    Space Free= 25.85 GB
With a total of 124.99 GB between the two (the adjacent pie chart total)
MY QUESTION: If I have a HD with a capacity of 185.99 GB, with only 99.14 GB utilized, why is the space free missing 51 GBs? Where did this memory space go?
Note: I have never partitioned the Hard Drive or created any sort of RAM Disk.
    Anyone? Please help.

    UPDATE BUT STILL NO ANSWER:
Ran DISK UTILITY which fixed some minor errors and how states "Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
But the issue remains - I have a 200GB hard drive but the data at the bottom of this utility reads:
    Capacity : 186.0 GB (199,705,673,728 Bytes)
    Available : 26.3 GB (28,291,375,104 Bytes)
    Used : 98.6 GB (105,916,047,360 Bytes)
    Number of Folders: 173,085
    Number of Files: 886,070
HOW CAN I ONLY HAVE 26.3GB available when I have only used 98.6GB of 186GB = Should be a 87.4 GB balance available, not 26.3 GB, right????????
What is the deal here? Is this related to MobileMe or iPhone issue maybe?
The hardware start-up test and disk utility test are all clean. Someone? Anyone?
    Thanks!

  • Quality issues with IDVD solved

    Hi All
    RE. Best looking IDVD playback.
May this help all those stuggling with quality issues with perfect looking Qtime files encoded by IDVD coming out looking crap.
Simply this: instead of exporting your media from your FCP timeline in H.264 - instead select Motion JPEG A. This is found under your setting options in your Qtime movie/settings export window.
Your files will export much, much faster than Apple's default setting of H.264, you will also get very smooth playback wihtout any jaggies or nasty artifacts. Files are a larger but, hey, it just looks great.
Let me know if this works for you - it took me ages to figure this out!

  • IPad and iTunes Capacity Issue/Application Install Issue

I've just spent the past hour trying to figure out why iTunes 10 is reporting I have 17.9GB of video although the iPad itself is saying I have 0 videos.
I am not syncing any music videos, movies, TV shows, Podcasts or content from iTunes U.
The iPad Free Space indicator is reporting I have 8.9GB avail, but counting video as using 17.9GB of my iPad's total capacity.
    Anyone else?
I'm also trying to add Photogene to my iPad via iTunes and keep getting an error message indicating I need a newer version of iPad software to install, although I do have the most recent version. Seems like iTunes 10 issues.

There seems to be some reports that iTunes is reporting the wrong numbers for the free space, thought that's not happening to me (as best as I can tell) on my iPhone and iPad.
As for Photogene, my guess is that you're trying to install the iPhone version on your iPad. The iPhone version only works on iOS 4.0, so can't be installed on the iPad. There is an iPad version, but you have to buy it separately.

  • Capacity issue on Metro Ethernet

We have a 10MB Metro-E customer experiencing bandwidth issues and would like to determine if we could be the cause. We have 9 of these 10MB Metro-E’s, our host circuit is 50MB and our backbone is 100MB (bandwidth on the host and edge never exceed 50%). The M-E circuits come in on a 3825 that also serves as the Edge Router so all of this is in one device. Customer is doing Windows server replication and is complaining about the upload bandwidth. There are questions about shaping, capacity and if the 3825 is “big enough”.
We do see them hitting the 10MB but not maintaining it, which is what they have an issue with. My original tests did indicate an issue and I reached out to AT&T. We had no shaping in place and they indicated that if they were bursting over 10MB D/L they would have issues with U/L. I put shaping in place and still had issues. After more research they came back and indicated they found an issue on a “trunk” and moved several circuits, ours included, to a new trunk. My testing after that showed huge improvements. I could consistently get 10MB either way but full duplex capped around 8.5x8.5. AT&T indicated that would be expected with 64 byte packets, all looks good, thanks for your business. (Yesterday I happened to catch it doing 8.4x10.3, but again the perception is that it is not consistant).
    Config attached, thanks in advance.

  • Aspect Ratio and Chapter Issues in iDVD

    HI there,
I may be being particularly dense here and missing something but I'm being driven avsolutely mad by this.
Firstly, I have a Movie which is 16:9, correctly flagged in Quicktime as 16:9, and plays in 16:9 until I add it to a project (a 16:9 themed project) in iDVD whereupon it gets sqaushed to 4:3. This is ridiculous.
The only workaround I found was to imprt the whole movie into iMovie and 'Share' it then to iDVD which preserved the aspect ratio but took rather a long time to process,
The second issue I'm having is with inserting Chapter markers. I see that you can insert these regularly every 4 minutes or whatever, but what if you actually want to insert them at the start of a scene ? I wouldn't have thought it was beyond the ken of man to allow you to specify a particular timecode for each chapter marker ?
Hopefully I'm missing something that someone can put me right on, either that or iDVD is really missing a trick.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Richard

You create the chapter markers in iMovie before going to iDVD.

  • Still having issues with iDVD 5  not burning playlist

I have tried many things as suggested before, including sending to Garageband,
making a new playlist etc. The slideshow always plays fine in iDVD, but when you burn it to DVD it only plays one song and stops. I have a family project that I would like to burn and make copies of. Also now having input/output error when trying to copy DVD's. Please help, much time wasted...

You're in the iDVD 6 Discussion group... You should post in the iDVD 5 Discussion group.
    However:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."
