Caps keyboard doesn't work. What am I missing?

Question

Hi folks. I'm currently making my way through the "starting with logic" manual, and am at the point where it describes how to record a track (page 48ish). I don't have a midi keyboard so want to use the caps keyboard, but it doesn't appear to be doing anything. I selected one of the ES tracks, pressed caps, and can see the keys being depressed when I hit them, but there is no audio coming out. Can someone help out a newb? Cheers.

Hi Mitch, thanks very much for your reply. However you lost me with the first paragraph. I can see an Environment window, with the channel strips, etc, but I don't know what a "click & port layer" is or the "recording & thru" object. Can you walk me through it? Unfortunately the manual is pretty sparse in the places where it needs to be verbose.

Check the Environment, Click & Port layer. There
should be a Physical Input object connected to a "to
Recording & Thru" object. There may be a Keyboard
(Input notes) and Input View object in between.
The below part was easy to follow, but I still got no sound. Probably because I missed something by not understanding your first step.
Go back to the Arrange page. Be sure to select an
Audio Instrument track usually called something like
Inst 1. If the fader is not on the lefthand side
click
the "P" key (this is the keycommand for Hide/Show
Parameters). Click the "Inserts" at the top and
select some sound like 01 Pianos>Bright Piano. (Any
sound will do.)
Now make sure that you have selected the Audio
Instrument track in the arrange and open the CapsLock
Keyboard and see if you get a sound.
