Caps lock comes on randomly and tab prints a letter w (IMAC)

This problem has recently started. I press letter s and caps lock comes on. Tab key produces a w. Pressing letter w tabs acrossS the page.   Hitting caps lock produces letter s. confused. Any ideas? I have a wired keyboard.

Does the same thing happen with a different keyboard? That would be the easiest thing to test. You don't need a Mac keyboard, any USB keyboard will do.
If the problem goes away with a different keyboard, you need to replace yours.
Best of luck.

    Many thanks, Roger Biggin.

You may be referring to the "Oleg Pliss" hack (not a virus), in which some people (mostly in Australia and New Zealand) have had their Apple IDs hacked and used to remotely lock their iOS devices. If that's what you read about, be sure that you are using a strong password on your Apple ID, and consider enabling two-factor authentication on your Apple ID to make it difficult or impossible for a hacker to take it away from you.
If you live in Australia or New Zealand, it may be worthwhile to turn off Find My iPad on your iPad, at least until the cause of the problem has been determined. Of course, that reduces the protections against theft. You'd be better off to just make sure you're keeping the iPad backed up, so you can restore it if it happens to get locked.
If this isn't the story you read about, we'll need more details about what the story said.

I need to reprogram the delete and enter key to the left side of a external keyboard for the ipad mini. I don't need the caps/lock or ctrl key. Due to a brain injury my daughter can only use her left hand to type. She also uses a text to speech app to verbalize all of her needs since her speech isn't intelligible any longer either. And her vision was significantly affected also, so the keyboard has to be mounted about 6 inches from her face. So to reach across the keyboard with her left hand to the right side delete and enter button is physically difficult and causes typing errors, which cause people to not understand what shes trying to say.
The best keyboard so far is the Zagg folio mini. I just had to make stickers to enlarge the letters on the key buttons.
Does anyone know how I can reprogram these two keys? Or where I can buy a wireless mini keyboard for Ipad made for lefthanders with these two functions on the left side. I have searched for days and days. It's sooooo important to me that she be able to contribute her voice again. Imagine if you got in a car accident and couldn't speak clearly any longer, but understood everything still. Thanks for any help and suggestions you all take the time to share with me. I really appreciate the kindness of strangers to help me help my daughter.

    You cannot.

  • Rebind Caps lock to both Esc and Ctrl

I'm trying to rebind Caps lock to both the Escape and Control keys.
The exact behavior I want is:
If Caps-Lock is held while another key is pressed: it behaves like control
If Caps-Lock is pressed alone: it behaves like escape
I've used xmodmap to remap single keys in the past, but this use case seems a little different that single key remapping.
I'm basing this behavior on this blog post, describing how to implement this behavior on OSX using some utilities.
I've used xmodmap and have read about xkb a little, but I'm unsure what combination of utilities I could use to achieve the desired effect on a linux system.
Anyone have any recommendations on a setup that might produce the desired effects using xmodmap, xkb or other tools?

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

  • Why does my flash come on randomly and will not turn off??

At random times, my phone's flash with come on and not turn off till I press the lock or home button. Is my phone broken or is there a way to fix this?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.  Try each step in succession until your problem is solved.  If not solved after trying ALL these steps, you'll need to bring the phone to Apple.

    Hey,
Sorry to hear about the keyboard problem.
In a post a while back had this to say.  He makes a suggestion that the keyboard might need to be replaced, then the person with the question tried something else.  You might take a look and see if there's something there that will help.
Thanks for coming to the forum.

  • Pavilion DV6, Black Screen and 3 Caps Lock Blink

    HI,
I have an Hp Pavilion DV6 and I am getting the 3 blinks on the caps lock. When I turn on the PC it starts up, the caps lock blinks 3 times and the screen is just black. I have already tested the memory sticks, drain the battery, and hooking it up to an external monitor.  Nothing shows on the other monitor and it just remains black. Please help!

    Hi @shmurray,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand you are getting a blink pattern on the Caps lock LED, when you turn on the notebook. I am happy to help you with this.
I am including the page on the error codes for your reference: Blank Screen LED Error Codes
From that document the pattern you are getting indicates a memory problem. You said that you have tested the memory. What exactly did you try?
The document suggests reseating the RAM or trying a new set of RAM and then restarting the notebook. If you are still getting a memory problem after trying both of those things, ie a 3 blink code again, then it would likely suggest that there is a problem with the motherboard itself, either with the memory slot or one of the controllers related to memory.
In that case I would suggest contacting the technical phone support number at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

If however reseating the memory or replacing it leads to a different error code or message please let me know, Although in that case the following may be helpful if you still have a blank screen.

    Hi Chris,
See if you can match the pattern of the 'blinks' to those shown on the table below - this may atleast give you a better idea of what the problem is.

  • HP ProBook 6540b won't boot and caps lock "blinking" continuously.

    Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend with his laptop a Probook 6540b.
It won't boot and caps lock "blinking" continuously.
When I got it caps lock and num lock was "blinking" tre times... indicated memory problems, reseated the memory modules
and the the "tre time blinking" disappeared, but caps lock now blinking continuously and the only way to shot down the computer
    is to disconnect the power.
    Anyone with some ideas???
    Janson

A neighbor had the same problem and asked for my assistance.  I created a rescue disk using my HP desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.  Even though her HP laptop was running Windows 7 32-bit, the disk allowed me to boot into windows on her computer.  I then went to the HP web site and downloaded the latest BIOS and then flashed it to the BIOS chip following the instructions that came with the download.  Everything is working fine now.  Hope this helps.

  • How to engage CAPS lock  confidence tone on keyboard

Just forgotten how engage CAPS lock  confidence tone on keyboard. Getting fed up with typing out text only to find I hadn't noticed the "freakin' " Caps lock light is on and I have to delete it and start again!! I am sure I used to have the confidence tone engaged..just forgotten how!! Thanks in advance!! Ivor

Now I understand the why factor. I don't type proper qwerty either but training your fingers to learn where the keys are will  help. I would also recommend working on building up confidence so that you can type without looking away from the screen.
I can't even describe how I write qwerty, I don't really use my pinky fingers for any of the keys in the placement photo (other than shift)
Practice practice practice makes perfect, try random stuff until you find something that works.
Take a look at some key-remappers and move the capslock key  somewhere else.

Next, you may want to modify the keyboard input if qwerty tangles up your fingers.

  • Wireless keyboard caps lock is inside out.

I have a wireless keyboard working with Mac Air.   The caps lock key is randomly on caps with the light on  -  or off with the light on.  I've checked that the Caps Lock key on the mac air keyboard is off so that the caps lock key on the remote keyboard isn't getting a different signal but that doesn't seem to make any difference.  They apparently arent' related and probably shouldn't be related.
Suggestions?   What's most curious is that its random and shifting back and forth.

Sorry...I sometimes "assume" things...dumb on my part
PRAM=Parameter Random Access Memory - reset like this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
SMC=System Management Controller - reset like this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Neither of those resets will hurt anything, and sometimes they "fix" odd problems.

  • Cap lock is locked. Tried everything.

    I have MacBook Pro.
My "caps lock" is locked on. And the light is  not on. Once it just froze and went to safe mode. I was not able to log in because it would not not accept my password since my password is with lowercase. I was able to log in by running OS X Install DVD and pressing Control-Comand - P. But the problem did not go away. Whatever I type is in CAPS. And all the folders act funny. They don't open up right away but rather come to the front very slow. It gets more interesting. I thought the problem is a keyboard. BUT when I switch to WINDOWS Parralel Desktop it WORKS FINE. I can type in LOWER case letters.
Also, I am able to log in via SAFE mode by connecting external keyboard. Any way, I have tried different account, PRAM and SMC resets couple of times each as has been suggested in previous posts. I did check all keyboard settings and so on. I did check shift and other keys. They all look fine. Basicly I have tried everything that has been suggested.
    Please, advise.

DID YOU EVER GET A RESOLUTION TO THIS?
    I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM>>>
can only get lowercase letters using an external USB keyboard.
Shift and Caps Lock keys are clean and unadulterated... they were working great yesterday.
    help???
