Caps Lock Does Not Work

The caps lock key on my  4 yr old MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) does not work. It did at one time. The Keyboard was replaced a long time ago but that did not solve it.
If I log out and then back on as another user, it does work.
Where do I start to look for the cause.
Alexander

Check in your keyboard settings on both accounts in System Preferences > Language and Text, and you may find a difference between the two regarding the behavior of the caps-lock key.
Or your caps-lock may be a little capricious, too...

  • Keyboard delete and caps lock keys not working after update

Shortly after a windows update two keys, delete and caps lock do not work. I have tried the following
    1. system restore..it says it cannot restore as a file is missing. I have used this function before without any problem.
    2. Update key board driver (standard PS/2)..it says latest version is installed.
    3. Uninstall and reinstall.
    4. Reset using the remove batteryt hold down power key option.
The caps lock and delete does not work in Notepad or MS Word.
It seems unlikely that the two keys themselves are damaged as it is unlikely that they would both fail at the same time and the problem after the windows undate is suspicious.
I am using Windows 7 Home premium on a 64 bit HP G62.
    help appreciated as ever

Here's another test...since your laptop has USB ports get or borrow a USB keyboard and try it and if all those keys work and test then the results would mean your laptop keyboard has stop functioning as least you narrow done the problem.

  • HT1192 Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too.

Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too. Please help me to sort this problem out.

I think even in newer versions of OS X there is a slight delay; just not so pronounced. My advice to get around it would be to install PCKeyboardHack and KeyRemap4MacBook - then do a couple of things:
Change the Caps Lock key in System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys to "None"
Use PCKeyboardHack to remap Caps Lock to keycode 110, the PC Application Key, which is unused on Apple keyboards.
Then use KeyRemap4Macbook to map that particular keycode to Toggle Caps Lock.Try selecting For PC Users > Change PC Application Key > Application Key to CapsLock.
I'm pretty sure that should get rid of the delay, which only happens when Apple is in charge of connecting the Caps Lock key to its action.
Really, though, I would personally recommend doing some much more awesome things with your Caps Lock key; it's prime keyboard real estate, and who uses caps lock anyway, except in the darkest corners of the Internet? Personally, I've remapped Caps to be Escape (for use in my text editor) when you press it by itself quickly, but to be Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift when you press it with any other key. I call it the "Hyper" key, and use it to switch applications; Hyp+S = Safari, Hyp+D = email, Hyp+F = Finder... The point is, be creative, make the Caps Lock key work for you.
Oh, and the real Escape key maps to Caps Lock, so I can use it if I want to.

My auto-lock does not work properly in this new iOS 6

Do you have your Assistive Touch on? Per another user in another forum:
    Source: http://forums.imore.com/ios-6-forum/240631-auto-lock-not-working-ios-6-a.html. Username: Chambaka
Okay, I did a 'reset all settings' in settings and problems fixed. Hope this can be useful for others.
Edit: it appears that when the assistive touch is on the autolock function won't work while in the home screen, but will work if opening a app. I hope Apple fixes this bug in the next update.
I tried what he said and my auto-lock's working again - so, I turned off my Assistive Touch. Hope Apple fixes this bug soon,

  • Shift-Caps Lock-Tab not working with remapped Caps Lock

I've remapped my Caps Lock key to Ctrl using the Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier keys dialog and in the following question when I say CTRL i mean the Caps Lock key remapped to Ctrl and Ctrl is the normal left Ctrl key.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I've just bought 2 new external corded Apple keyboards and both of them are having trouble with the key combination Left Shift + CTRL + Tab. For applications where that combination should go to the previous TAB it does not work. If I use the right Shift instead it works fine, if I use the left Ctrl key instead of the remapped Caps Lock key it works great too.
The internal keyboard on the laptop works fine with Left Shift - Caps Lock - Tab.
The computers are a Macbook Air 11" Mid 2011 and a Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2010.

  • Caps Lock LED not working in X unless I hold shift

Hi, I recently installed Arch, installed X and configured it as the wiki says, installed awesome and now I switched the language toggle to Caps Lock instead of Alt+Shift.
I hoped the LED would tell me what language I'm typing in. But I noticed the LED wasn't working (Num Lock LED does work however).
I looked on the forum and it said to use
    kbd_mode -u
to switch the keyboard to UTF-8 and it'll be fine.
Now Scroll Lock works too (it didn't before), but Caps Lock does something weird, it lights up for a split second then immediately turns back off. That unless I hold shift when I press Caps Lock, then it works fine, but I don't want to hold shift...
So how can I make it work?
EDIT: In the tty Caps Lock works fine.
    Thanks.

Standard troubleshooting procedures in order are power the iPhone off and on, Reset, Restore and if no change after and or all in order, call AppleCare (800) 694-7466 or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.
Although others may have experienced the same, this does not mean the majority have.

  • Android orientation lock does not work within the ADPS App

    Hi,
and another Android App Bug for today. The Android orientation lock feature does not work in Apps created with ADPS. If orientation lock is enabled and I turn the tablet, the orientation off the ADPS Apps will turn with the tablet.
My Test Tablet is an Acer IconiaTab A510 with Android 4.0.3
    Kind regards
    Yves

When you say that the orientation lock doesn't work, we have no way of knowing if that means that the screen is locked in one position only, or that it will not lock in one position only. So try something g very basi and reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
In the camera app, you have to swipe up and down on the screen to move between photo, video and the square photo mode options, so are you even in the correct mode to take videos?

  • Clicking the lock does not work HELP

clicking the lock at any kind of program does not work at all, not working in system pref,
not working at ''get info'' window, not working in any other kind of lock, i tried defragging via idefrag but that couldn't work because it needed a lock to be opened as well, i can't move my files to some folders, getting the ''The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100022).''
plus when i log out, cannot log in because when i type my password it accepts it but then nothing happens, i had a root account as well but i can't enter it and can't create again because of the lock, but when i log in with guest account(no pass required) i can make changes via clicking the lock and filling in admin username and password in system preferences. and i created a new admin account in guest account by filling admin info for authorization in system preferences > users&groups , set no password, logged out but could not log into that account as well. my system is set to login to my account when the system starts. so thats how i can use the computer

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
    /var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
    Step 1
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
    Step 2
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
    rm /var/audit/current
You must type the command exactly as given. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be.
Press the return key. You’ll get an error message about a “read-only filesystem” below what you entered. There must be no other error message. If there is, try again until you get it right. You’ll continue to get the read-only error.
You might get the error “No such file or directory,” even if you entered the command correctly. If you’re sure that’s the case, stop and post again.
    Step 3
Once you’ve taken steps 2, and received the expected error messages, enter the following command:
    mount -uw /
Again, you must get it exactly right. This time, there should be no output at all. If there is, you mistyped the command, or something else is wrong.
    Step 4
When you’ve taken step 3 with no error message, press the up-arrow key until the command from step 2 (rm …) reappears. If you got everything right on the first try, you’ll need to press the key twice. Make sure the command is correct, then press return again. There should be no output. If there is any, make a note of it and post a reply.
    Step 5
    Enter the command:
    exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.

  • Portg Z30-A-108 - Num lock does not work on external keyboard

    Hi,
We have a Portg Z30-A-108. We use it with external wireless keyboard and mouse. On the external keyboard is used, the num pad does not work (as if the "num lock" was off). I tried using the function key FN+F11 on the laptop but without any succes.
Does somebody had the same problem or any idea to solve it ?
    Thanks.
    Nicolas

    >On the external keyboard is used, the num pad does not work (as if the "num lock" was off)
You are talking about the external keyboard.
But from my knowledge the internal Portg Z30-A-108 keyboard does not contain the num pad. Possibly this is the reason why the Num Lock is turned off.
By the way: the NumLock can be enabled in the system registry.
Open Windows registry editor using the command regedit.
In the registry, go to the folders.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Control Panel\ Keyboard\
Within the keyboard folder, you should find a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2.
    Here the value meaning:
0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.
    1 = Disable Num Lock.
2 = Numlock is turned ON after the logon.

  • Wireless keyboard caps lock light not working

Hey, said it all in the title but here's the story...
Got home today and realized that the caps lock LED don't light up anymore. Has anyone else had similar problems? If so, how was your situation rectified?
The keyboard still works fine, don't think its a bad enough problem to have it replaced or be without it for ages. Could see if apple will allow a straight swap at the shop...

    Hi Guys
Glad I've just found these posts. Got a new 27" iMac just before Christmas. Greatly relieved that everything worked despite all the reports of cracked screens, etc. BUT - only small problem was the Caps Lock light not always coming on. Rang Apple and got a replacement. Now today I'm having same problems - first the light froze and wouldn't go off. Then it wouldn't come on. I've now tried your advice of switching off the keyboard and taking out the batteries. Works OK now. Hopefuly it'll stay that way. Only thing is - pity Apple couldn't have given me that advice. Reading these posts, there is clearly an ongoing problem with the caps lock light on the wireless keyboard. A problem thats been around for months. Clearly Apple's poilicy, as always, is to admit nothing until it comes up with a fix. Pity that policy appears to extend to not even telling their own employees that there is a problem ...

  • My caps lock is not working! (Nothing happens when I press it and I cant see any light turing on or off)

    Hey guys,
My Caps lock doesnt work, I cant see any green light... I have a NEXXTECH 2.4G Wirrless Mouse and Keybored Combo Set
I have bought it 2 weeks ago and I just noticed that my mac's keybored caas lock doesnt work. I think my keybored settings are bit mixed up so I tried to search on google about "How to reset the keybored's settings" (like a factory rest but only the keybored settings NOT the computer.) Please I dont know what to do, any help and tips will be really appreciated.
    ( I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 with 10.8.2 )

Sounds like a hardware failure of the button.  Since you're most likley out of warranty, Google for a phone repair shop near you.

  • Caps light does not work

I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook series.
I noticed that my Caps Lock LED is not working but its FUNCTION is working fine.. same goes with Scroll Lock. Here's the weird part.. when I press Num Lock ( function key + scroll lock ) the LED turns on!
I already tried a system recovery, it didn't solve the issue. Is there something wrong with my BIOS?
Any help from you guys will be highly appreciated.. thanks!

    Hi all,
You can verify your warranty status here:
    http://www13.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447627+1286541891570+28353475
If your laptop is under warranty, have an HP Authorized Service Center fix it for you.  If not, read on..
Get the schematics for your laptop by searching for your specific model laptop and downloading the Service Manual PDF.  That will have screw listings, pictures, removal process, etc.  Grab a Phillips#1 and Torx#8 screwdriver and a magnet to hold the screws you remove.
Per schematics, remove the keyboard, and then take a look at the keyboard bezel (the plastic piece above the keyboard with all the lights).  Look for ribbon cables coming out from under the bezel going in to a ZIF connector.  Remove the ribbon cables from the ZIF, verify that the metal on the cable looks good, and re-seat it back in the ZIF and make sure it is flush and evenly in there.  Put the laptop back together and verify it now works right, if not you could try again, order a replacement part, or say screw it all together.  Hope this helps.
