Begin by resetting the SMC and PRAM each at least 2x. If that won't work book an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP. However before doing so, after  you have done the resets (assuming they do not work) test another keyboard to determine if it's the keyboard or computer.

  • Wired keyboard issues-caps lock won't turn off and other keys do not type

I sat down today to use my May, 2010 iMac.  Fully up to date with Lion.
I am using a WIRED keyboard.
The caps lock key is permanently on and the remaining keys when pressed do nothing.  They do not work.  You can press the keys down but they don't type any letters or symbols of any kind.
I cannot log in because I can't type my password as the keys don't work.
I can't do a PRAM reset because the  P and R keys and others don't work.
I don't know what an SMC reset is but I can't do that either because the keys don't work.
Why would a keyboard stop functioning?  Yesterday, it was just fine.  Now it doesn't work.
What causes the caps lock key to stay on?
I have unplugged the keyboard etc, but nothing changed.
Doesn't anyone know how to correct this problem?  Do I just need to buy a new keyboard?
I called Apple but they were closed.

Please read teh directions for an SMC reset:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Caps lock button issue

I'm very confused by this problem. Every 4-5 shut down and restart cycles, the caps lock light will come on at just before the log in screen. After I log in it stays lit and won't shut off. I've disabled the caps lock key in System Pref. but it still happens. Also when this is taking place I am unable to use the symbol keys that are with the numbers at the top of the keyboard. The only way to get rid of it is to restart it. I know it's not a big deal, but when I need to get stuff done, it's a pain to wait for it to star again. This all started after I installed 10.5.4, I doubt it has anything to do with it, but I guess any info would be helpful.
    Thank

I noticed that some problems don't seem to get attention. I am typing this using a bluetooth keyboard on top of my G4 PowerBook, which is hardly an elegant solution to my caps lock problem. If I spend close to $2000 on a laptop, which is close to the most I spend on any consumer product after a house and car, is it unreasonable to expect that after a mere four years, it can be repaired, rather than simply tossed aside. I am an expat living in a SE Asian country without any Apple Authorised resellers etc. When I make the trip to Thailand to get my machine fixed, I'd like to know that someone there will know what to do to sort this problem, without me being faced with the prospect of having to pay a lot of money to buy a new one or replace hardware that is not in fact needing replaced. That is why I posted on this forum. Was I mistaken in thinking that in the entire Mac using community, there isn't more than one other person having the same issue as me? Is anybody from Apple aware of this problem and do they have any idea how to fix it? I'm not seeking to be antagonistic here, I'd just like to think that somebody, somewhere out there has some idea, what has gone wrong with my PowerBook and can help me get it fixed.
p.s I sorted out the large fuzzy Apple on startup by zapping the PROM, so that doesn't seem to be directly connected to the game of green light tennis I can now play between my caps lock and num lock keys. (My caps lock key is permanently lit and when I try to turn it off, it reduces the volume of my speakers and "types" "rfr" and other such gobbledegook.)

  • Caps lock button acting very strange.

I recently got a Lenovo T420 thinkpad. Everything has been great until earlier today I tried to log-in to buzzport ( a GT website) and when I hit the caps lock button all these weird things happened. Google Chrome went into full screen, and the "elements" thing came up. Im not sure exactly what it is, but it looks like some sort of HTML code for the website. oh and if it also enters the text "09" when caps lock is pressed. well anyways, now this happens everytime I press caps lock. I opened notepad and pressed caps lock. The result was "09" followed by an endless stream of 1's which continued until I pressed caps lock again. This is very strange and I couldn't find any information about this on google. I don't know what could have caused this, but its very frustrating because this is a brand new laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
edit: so i've been playing with it, and im convinced that basically instead of just doing what caps lock does, it is pressing a series of other buttons as well including the 09, the 1's, and opening what i now know is called the elements pannel which normally opens with ctrl + shift + C. so in other words, for some reason pressing caps lock preses the buttons "09 ctrl + shift + C 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111"
edit 2: ok it just got weirder. I fixed the problem...sort of. I started thinking about everything i have done differently today. I mean ive only had the lap top for a few days after all. tonight is the first night i used the mute button. i unmuted the laptop, and now everything is fine. if i mute, then caps lock acts weird again. I could just always go to zero volume rather than mute, but just as a curiosity, why is this happening? it makes no sense!

  • Can't remap caps lock in system preferences anymore

I just discovered that when I go into system preferences to set up a new keyboard under Yosemite 10.3, and click on "Modifier Keys..." to remap the modifier keys, the only valid mapping for Caps Lock is now "No Action."   "Control," "option" and "command" are all greyed out.   What gives?   Do I have to buy a $200 happy hacking keyboard now to have Control to the left of 'a'?

Look at the headphone port to see if there's a small red light inside. Doing this in a darkened room might help. If you see the light, try inserting and removing a headphone jack a few times. Sometimes the port gets stuck on optical. If the headphone jack trick doesn't work, insert a plastic toothpick or maybe one prong of a plastic fork and gently jiggle it around. Don't use too much force, since you don't want to break that off inside.

  • "caps lock on"  "caps lock off" voice

Somehow in setting up a new machine, I have turned on something so that whenever I go into or out of caps lock, a voice announces that to me. This is very nice, but I would like to know how to control this feature.
    Thanks in advance

Hellow Yellow Snow! (and Bike and Norman)
The feature in Safari that is annoying you is controlled via the Preferences dialogue, Advanced pane. Clear the checkbox marked "Press Tab to highlight each item on a webpage", and it should go back to the way you want. Another possible source is in "Keyboard and Mouse", the "Keyboard Shortcuts" pane. Try setting the radio button at the bottom of the pane to "Text boxes and lists only" rather than "All controls".
As for the "caps lock on" and "off" voice alert, this is indeed a feature of VoiceOver and I've not been able to make it happen without VoiceOver on. This disappoints me, as I'm always flipping the caps lock on inadvertently when typing a translation very fast, and often I only notice I'm typing in ALL CAPS when I've done a COUPLE OF SENTENCES… I've turned off the caps lock entirely now (via "Keyboard & Mouse"—>Keyboard, Modifier Keys button).
Have you checked your Login Options (Accounts pane in System Preferences) to ensure that "Use VoiceOver at login window" is turned off?

  • HP G42-475DX Blinking Caps Lock

    Good Day
I currently have an HP G42-475dx which was purchased about a year and a half ago. This laptop has known to run fairly hot (around 80 degrees celcius).
I was using the laptop to play music, while the screen went blank. I took off the laptop.
1st - Upon putting on the laptop, the caps lock LED blinked twice (Indicates corrupted bios). I then went to power off, and leave it off for 10 minutes.
2nd - Upon leaving off for a while, the caps lock is now blinking 5 times upon powering on (General system board failure). I then proceeded to open up the laptop and remove the CMOS battery.
Upon removing the battery, and leaving the laptop off overnight.. The caps lock is now blinking once, (which indicates CPU not functional.)
I am unsure whether the motherboard has gone bad, or if its just the CPU itself. I need to get this laptop back and running for when i start school..
Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks!

It's most likely the motherboard or a corrupt BIOS.  CPUs rarely fail.

  • My caps lock was stuck and I shut down. Now it's coming back up in safe boot and asking for a password. It won't take my password, I believe because of the caps lock problem. So, how can I get in?

My caps lock was stuck when I shut down my computer. It is coming back up in safe boot (I had spilled liquid on it).
It's asking for my password - which has some lower case letters...So now how can I get in?
Is there a way to change this password or something?
I have a wireless keyboard, but it wasn't set up - so, It's not recognizing it.
    Any ideas?

Take your computer to get the keyboard replaced, your lucky it didn't trigger the moisture sensor and brick your machine, so your chances of the machine working well after the keyboard is replaced is likely very good.
As long as the main keyboard is sending a caps lock signal, it's not going to work even if you get in.
If you need to remove files off the internal drive, use a Firewire cable (800 to 400 adpater may be needed) and hold T to boot the problem Mac into Firewire Target Disk Mode and connect the cable to another Mac, the hard drive will appear on the desktop which you can then remove/erase files.

There is no known malware capable of infecting an iPhone that hasn't been jailbroken (ie, hacked to allow apps from outside the App Store).
If you have jailbroken the phone, and jailbroke the last phone as well, that is certainly the cause of the problem. Restore the phone to factory condition, without restoring any backups, to remove the jailbreak, and any potential malware you might have become infected with.
If you have not jailbroken the phone, it's not malware, it's probably a hardware issue. If you have had the same problem on two different phones that were not jailbroken, you need to evaluate what environmental factors might be at play causing damage to your phones. It could be anything from a bad USB port/charger that you're connecting it to, an overly-humid environment, a tendency to drop phones or any number of other things.

  • Started with reversed caps lock, now.....

Yesterday while working in Word, my caps lock reversed function as well as num-lock. Shutting down and restarting seems to have fixed most of the problems but now to dim my screen or change the volume, I need to press the fn key in combination with the appropriate F-key. Also num-lock key won't function. Any ideas...?

Sounds like to need to do a bit of maintenance.
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
