Caps lock is too sensitive on keyboard

I don't know if this is a software problem, or a hardware problem, but is there any way to force the keyboard into lowercase, and keep it that way?
This is my first Mac mini, and it uses a "Macally" keyboard. The slightest touch on the caps lock key makes the whole keyboard go into uppercase mode. (It is very, very unsettling for someone who is not used to PC compatibles, or Macs, for that matter.)
Shouldn't there be a spring under the momentary contact switch? That way it would lock into place.
Is this a problem with Pages, or is it just the keyboard I bought to go with my Mac mini?

Tulse wrote:
This is not a Pages issue, and likely not even a keyboard driver issue, but is most probably just related to the physical setup of the keyboard. Do you get the same problem in other text editing applications, like TextEdit? If so, you need to contact Macally about this (or, if it really bothers you, buy a different model keyboard -- they are relatively cheap these days).
For some unknown reason, the manufacturer made the caps lock key twice as big as any of the other keys on the keyboard, except the SHIFT keys, and the SPACE BAR. Making the caps lock key so big, magnifies the likelihood of a stray finger alighting on it (ever so lightly) and toggling the keyboard into uppercase mode (a useless mode, so far as I can tell).
So, in that respect, the manufacturer is clearly at fault.
And I've noticed the same sort of thing happen with other keyboards, like those for the PC compatible. (I haven't any experience with the Apple II, or Apple IIe, or Lisa computers, though; do you know if those keyboards are afflicted with the same caps lock bug?) For the life of me, I can't figure out what good a caps lock key is supposed to be.
But the Mac kernel really ought to have some way of fixing this bug, and keeping things in lowercase mode. Yes, it happens with other applications, like TextEdit. That merely implies the bug is way down there, possibly in the Kernel.
Is there a Unix command that will make the caps lock key inert?

  • Disabling the caps lock delay on the aluminum keyboard

Is there any way of turning off the accidental caps-lock press prevention on the new Apple keyboards? (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/07/new-apple-keyboard-has-protection-against-acciden tal-caps-lock/)
I use my caps lock key as Control (SysPrefs -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard -> Modified Keys), and the bounce protection cause me no end of trouble - it is still enabled, though I am not using that key for caps lock.
I called Apple support, and they told me to return the keyboard. I do not think this will make a difference, but maybe a Genius can help me out.

Thanks for your suggestion Tom, but that's not really what we're trying to do.
On early keyboards (when I started typing on computer terminals (in the 70s/80s, yes, before personal computers, the Control key was the key to the left of "A". That was great for programmers since lots of things used Control (shell, Emacs, etc). At some point, the Powers That Be (TM) decided that Caps Lock belonged to the left of the "A" key, so people like me spent their time either hoarding the old-style keyboards or finding ways of putting Control 'back where it should be'.
So disabling Caps Lock altogether does not achieve this goal. And until the Aluminum keyboard, ALL other Apple keyboards have worked fine under OSX using the Keyboard Modifier Key swap to simply make Caps Lock be Control. This Aluminum keyboard still makes the switch and works, but at the cost of having to hold the key longer as if it still were the Caps Lock key. Many typists may not even notice this difference, but to a touch-typist, the key seems simply not to work at all.

  • Since downloading update Caps Lock is backwards on my keyboards (both laptop and desk top)

I downloaded the the latest Firefox update and couldn't seem to log into any of my favorite sites. This was on my laptop. Now on my desktop I am experiencing the same thing.
My login is fine because I select from the dropdown menu. But if I have not saved my password for sites like my bank account etc. I cannot log in. I finally figured out it was the key board setting. With caps lock on lowercase, but with caps lock off upper case!
IMPORTANT NOTE: laptop is Windows 7, Desktop is Linix!

In two years of daily participation in these forums, I don't recall ever seeing this reported before. So no, it isn't a "known problem". I think what I'd do in your shoes is sit down and type a couple of pages of text while sitting on my left hand, to completely disrupt all my typing habits and force me to do everything with my right hand. If the problem continued to occur under those circumstances, I'd figure it was real and probably a keyboard fault. If not, I'd pay closer attention to my left hand when typing.

  • Caps lock button not sensitive enough

I just bought a new macbook air , and I found that the caps lock button not as sensitive as other buttons, what should I do now ?
I have to press a bit longer and harder to make it detected.
    thanks!

I'm not sure if you've resolved this issue but I solved the problem by removing the charger plug, then the battery.  While the battery is out, push the power button.  Reinstall the battery and reconnect power.  When the notebook rebooted, the caps lock light and num lock lights were once again working.

  • HT1192 Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too.

Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too. Please help me to sort this problem out.

I think even in newer versions of OS X there is a slight delay; just not so pronounced. My advice to get around it would be to install PCKeyboardHack and KeyRemap4MacBook - then do a couple of things:
Change the Caps Lock key in System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys to "None"
Use PCKeyboardHack to remap Caps Lock to keycode 110, the PC Application Key, which is unused on Apple keyboards.
Then use KeyRemap4Macbook to map that particular keycode to Toggle Caps Lock.Try selecting For PC Users > Change PC Application Key > Application Key to CapsLock.
I'm pretty sure that should get rid of the delay, which only happens when Apple is in charge of connecting the Caps Lock key to its action.
Really, though, I would personally recommend doing some much more awesome things with your Caps Lock key; it's prime keyboard real estate, and who uses caps lock anyway, except in the darkest corners of the Internet? Personally, I've remapped Caps to be Escape (for use in my text editor) when you press it by itself quickly, but to be Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift when you press it with any other key. I call it the "Hyper" key, and use it to switch applications; Hyp+S = Safari, Hyp+D = email, Hyp+F = Finder... The point is, be creative, make the Caps Lock key work for you.
Oh, and the real Escape key maps to Caps Lock, so I can use it if I want to.

  • OSX Caps Lock stuck on (not a sticky keyboard)

You see this question posted frequently, and I have searched exhaustively to find the right solution for my problem, to no avail.
Occasionally, my iMac will get into a funky mode where EVERTHING I TYPE IS IN CAPITAL LETTERS, regardless of the status of Caps Lock. Yes, I know, it's annoying. But it's more than just annoying because it makes it impossible to unlock the screen and I have to reboot, losing unsaved work in the process. ARGH!
You're probably already thinking of all the silly solutions; removing cracker crumbs or grape jelly from under the keys, unplugging/replugging the USB keybard or trying a different keyboard. Let me save us both some time, because it's not that obvious. I ask you to put your thinking cap on, because right now my screen is locked and I would rather not have to reboot. My wife has some unsaved work that I don't want to lose! Do you accept the challenge? Thanks! Here's what we know, and some of the things we can rule out:
    * This has been known to happen while I am typing.
    * The only solution I have found to restore normal behavior is a simple reboot, which resolves the problem every time.
    * It is not a bad keyboard. The same behavior is exhibited by known good USB and Bluetooth OEM keyboards, as well as a third aftermarket keyboard.
    * The Caps Lock keys on ALL THREE keyboards are working properly, as demonstrated by the Caps Lock LED toggling on/off with each press of the key.
    * However, the Caps Lock indicator in the Password field STAYS ON and does NOT toggle when the key is pressed!
    * No key behavior has been changed from their default Preferences.
    * This was happening with the factory install of Lion, and has continued after the in-house upgrade to Mt Lion.
    * This occurs only once every two months or so, which is why I have never got around to opening a ticket with Apple.
All of this leads me to believe that there is nothing wrong with my computer. I believe that, quite by accident, I fat-finger some magical key combination that triggers this behavior. Unfortunately, I can never figure out what I've done, or how to get it back to normal without rebooting the darn thing. Until I can figure out what triggers this behavior (and so presumably will be able to toggle back to normal when it occurs), I think my best workaround is to use a password that has all upper case letters so at least I can unlock it when it does happen. Unfortunately, right now I am still facing losing work due to a reboot if I can't find a real solution.
    Suggestions? Advice? SOLUTIONS????

Hi Donna, if you've already rebooted, try this workaround...
    System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier keys>Caps Lock=no action.

  • Wireless keyboard caps lock issue (not LED related)

i just bought an iMac last week and I'm having a weird issue with caps locks. It seems like that particular key needs to be pressed harder than the rest of the keys to register a keystroke. If I hit it lightly, the key will depress but the keystroke won't register and the LED light won't come on. Any other key, even if I hit it very lightly, as long as it was pressed down, the keystroke is registered,
I found the right amount of force where I can press it down like 10 times and it won't register the keystrokes at all. When I'm typing fast, I'll have to go back to capitalize almost 80% of the letter that need capitalizing even though I hit the caps lock key while I was typing. All the "I"s, the first letters of every sentence and the first letters of proper names.
I've had plenty of keyboards, some wireless and I've never had this issue, nor have I had it on my Macbook. I'm just wondering if this is how it was designed to work or if I have a faulty keyboard that I need to go and replace.

    Hi Guys
Glad I've just found these posts. Got a new 27" iMac just before Christmas. Greatly relieved that everything worked despite all the reports of cracked screens, etc. BUT - only small problem was the Caps Lock light not always coming on. Rang Apple and got a replacement. Now today I'm having same problems - first the light froze and wouldn't go off. Then it wouldn't come on. I've now tried your advice of switching off the keyboard and taking out the batteries. Works OK now. Hopefuly it'll stay that way. Only thing is - pity Apple couldn't have given me that advice. Reading these posts, there is clearly an ongoing problem with the caps lock light on the wireless keyboard. A problem thats been around for months. Clearly Apple's poilicy, as always, is to admit nothing until it comes up with a fix. Pity that policy appears to extend to not even telling their own employees that there is a problem ...

  • Wireless keyboard caps lock is inside out.

I have a wireless keyboard working with Mac Air.   The caps lock key is randomly on caps with the light on  -  or off with the light on.  I've checked that the Caps Lock key on the mac air keyboard is off so that the caps lock key on the remote keyboard isn't getting a different signal but that doesn't seem to make any difference.  They apparently arent' related and probably shouldn't be related.
Suggestions?   What's most curious is that its random and shifting back and forth.

Sorry...I sometimes "assume" things...dumb on my part
PRAM=Parameter Random Access Memory - reset like this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
SMC=System Management Controller - reset like this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Neither of those resets will hurt anything, and sometimes they "fix" odd problems.

  • Wireless keyboard caps lock light not working

Hey, said it all in the title but here's the story...
Got home today and realized that the caps lock LED don't light up anymore. Has anyone else had similar problems? If so, how was your situation rectified?
The keyboard still works fine, don't think its a bad enough problem to have it replaced or be without it for ages. Could see if apple will allow a straight swap at the shop...

  • Caps Lock & Parallels out of sync

My Caps Lock button on my apple keyboard (I have the white flat keyboard) isn't working correctly.
When I'm in Parallels (Windows) and the caps lock is off, all keystrokes are capitalized and when the caps lock is on, all keystrokes are lower case.
For whatever reason, the caps lock feature is backwards. Does anyone know how to reset the Caps Lock function on my apple keyboard so I don't have to be messing with it all the time. Any help would be much appreciated.
I've been here but I couldn't find the answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1168
    Thank you

It's better to recapture and get the capture settings right to get the audio to be in sync in the first place.
What does your camera's on screen display say about the audio recording? If it's 12 bit you need to change the capture presets. If it's 16 bit, try capturing shorter clips...
Post more about your setup. What are you using for a scratch disk? and how is it formatted? That too could be part of the problem. Needs to be something other than your startup disk.
Also post the exact versions of FCP, QuickTime, and OS you're running.

  • Caps Lock LED incorrect when changing modifier keys

    Hello,
I remapped Caps Lock and Ctrl keys via keyboard settings (they're now flipped). Unfortunately the Caps Lock LED is still being activated by the "old" Caps Lock key (which is now the Ctrl key). This means that whenever I hit Ctrl (using the Caps Lock key) the Caps Lock LED changes its status.
This is rather annoying as it ends up being in random state and tells me nothing about the actual Caps Lock status. Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hello:
I suggest you call Applecare with a warranty issue.  The KB has a one year Apple warranty.  I would not waste any more time trying additional things.  You have already tried everything I would suggest.

  • Key board Caps Lock

I can't get my caps lock to function. It will auto caps lock at the begining of each line and after a period. I can cap a letter but I double click and it wont turn blue and lock the cap on. Any ideas???

Caps lock plus a few more goodies...
    Keyboard:
Turn Auto-Capitalization on or off: Choose General > Keyboard and turn Auto-
    Capitalization on or off.
By default, iPhone automatically capitalizes words after you type sentence-ending
    punctuation or a return character.
Set whether caps lock is enabled: Choose General > Keyboard and turn Enable Caps
    Lock on or off.
If caps lock is enabled and you double-tap the Shift key on the keyboard, all letters
you type are uppercase. The Shift key turns blue when caps lock is on.
Turn the ”.” shortcut on or off: Choose General > Keyboard and turn ”.” Shortcut on or
    off.
The ”.” shortcut lets you double-tap the space bar to enter a period followed by a space
when you’re typing. It is on by default.

  • Remove "Caps Lock" Delay

I have one issue with the macbooks, I found that Apple has designed the caps lock button on the notebook keyboards to not turn on unless you hold on it. Is there a way to remove the delay so i can just press it fast and it turns on?

    Hi
this was discussed and kindof fixed in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3629790?start=15&tstart=0

  • Fauty cap lock

cap lock sometimes needs several taps to activate cap lock key

    Try this:
Set the Keyboard pane in System Preferences panel such that "show keyboard and character viewers in menu bar" is checked. Then in the Menu Bar icon, click "show keybiard viewer". Tap the mouse cursor on the caps-lock key and see if it reliably changes back and forth. If it does so, then the physical keyboard on you MBA may be at fault, requiring service or replacement. If it does not cahnge back and forth with mouse clicks on the caps-lock screen keyboard viewer, then it has to be a software issue.
