Caps lock problem on Leopard MacBooks

I bought a new Santa Rosa black MacBook two weeks ago. It was great, except that the caps lock key would intermittently not work. The Apple Store swapped the machine, thinking that this might be symptomatic of a logic board problem. But the new machine does the same.
There have been a number of posts about all the keys on Leopard-installed MacBooks sometimes not responding. But is anyone else experiencing the caps lock issue in particular?
I'm wondering whether this is a Leopard issue or whether I've been unlucky in having the same hardware problem on two machines.
Installing 10.5.1 makes no difference, incidentally.

I have the same "problem." I just bought a MacBook, which does not seem to be right. The caps lock does NOT toggle. If you keep clicking caps lock key, you should see the light going on and off repeatedly. But, it does not. For example, if you click "caps lock" and "key A" one at a time, then you should see this: AaAaAaAaAaAa ...
A weird thing is that when I type in anything usually, I do not have any trouble in typing, which is good.
Anyway, I went to Apple store nearby to check what the other MacBooks work. They are all the same or their caps locks do NOT toggle. Okay, it is "normal." I admit that. This is really annoying.
I had other problems with the macbook (macbook won't safe sleep on low battery).
I basically have given up buying this macbook and will wait for a while. All macs that I have used have been okay. My expectation to Mac may be high, but this macbook is so weird.
Thank you,

  • Macbook caps-lock problem...!

    Hey
So the last week or so, my caps-lock button has been like weird. Some times it does work, some times not. If I press it like twice in a row, it may happen. Example:
    HhHhHhHhhHhHhHhHhHHHHHHHhHhHhHHHhHhHhHhh...
Is it a way to fix this, cause it is REALLY annoying!

The CapsLock key on newer Macs is designed to activate only if it's held down for a very brief moment. If you press it VERY quickly, your computer interprets that as an accidental press and does not activate caps lock. The amount of time you need to hold the button down is very brief. It's less than a second.
Is this the cause of the behavior you're seeing?

  • My caps lock was stuck and I shut down. Now it's coming back up in safe boot and asking for a password. It won't take my password, I believe because of the caps lock problem. So, how can I get in?

My caps lock was stuck when I shut down my computer. It is coming back up in safe boot (I had spilled liquid on it).
It's asking for my password - which has some lower case letters...So now how can I get in?
Is there a way to change this password or something?
I have a wireless keyboard, but it wasn't set up - so, It's not recognizing it.
    Any ideas?

Take your computer to get the keyboard replaced, your lucky it didn't trigger the moisture sensor and brick your machine, so your chances of the machine working well after the keyboard is replaced is likely very good.
As long as the main keyboard is sending a caps lock signal, it's not going to work even if you get in.
If you need to remove files off the internal drive, use a Firewire cable (800 to 400 adpater may be needed) and hold T to boot the problem Mac into Firewire Target Disk Mode and connect the cable to another Mac, the hard drive will appear on the desktop which you can then remove/erase files.

  • The cap lock on my old MacBook will not release.  Any suggestions

Cannot release the cap lock.  Live 200 miles from apple store. Will appreciate suggestions. Mary

What OS X are you running? You can disable the CAPS LOCK key in the meantime, as a workaround. Starting in Snow Leopard (10.6), you have the ability to manually set modifier keys...If you are running Mountain Lion:
System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys... > Select "No action" from the dropdown menu for "Caps Lock"
For 10.6 and 10.7 I do not know step by step off hand, but the instructions should be very similiar.

  • Weird Caps Lock Problem

Ok... this is driving me absolutely nuts! I have a 2nd Gen MBP running the latest OS X (10.4.10). Everytime I hit my Caps Lock key, it lock the Ctrl key so that all i can do is right click. I have to reboot every time to fix it. Now, I did have the Caps Lock key remapped to Ctrl using the "Modifier Keys" option in the System Pref's, but I have since turned that off. I also had Double Command installed in the past to remap the "\" key to forward delete. I know, I know... I've goofed w/ the default settings... it's my own fault.
I can't find anyone else w/ this problem. Help!
    TIA
    Jesse

Got it! I had installed double command as a system item... it was conflicting w/ the OS X keyboard modification. Just in case anyone cares.

  • CAPS LOCK problems

    Hello there!
My 2008 Mac Pro 1,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8 is having problems with CAPS LOCK, but not necessarily the caps lock key. Every once in a while my computer will suddenly think the SHIFT key is being pressed, and there's no way to "unpress" it, so to speak. Everything I click and type is as if the shift key is being pressed, and the only way to fix this issue is to restart the computer. Even if I do that, there's a chance that the issue will return only a few minutes after I turn the machine back on.
It doesn't seem that I'm doing anything in particular to trigger this unusual behavior, and it seems to be a random occurance. I do have a theory that it has something to do with the computer being used for extended periods of time, as it seems to happen more often when I'm doing a lot of video and graphics work for hours at a time.
I did, however, add some RAM to my computer a few weeks ago, which I had ordered from crucialmemory.com.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or know what might be causing it?
    Thank you in advance!

Hi Grant! Thank you for your response, but sticky keys seem to be off when this happens.
If it helps, whenever this issue occurs and I bring up the on screen keyboard, the shift keys are displayed as permanently pressed down. This also happens when I switch keyboards, so I know it's not any individual keyboard that is causing the problem.

  • Caps Lock Problem.... suddenly works reverse of expected

    Hi all,
I have had my PB for four months and use it constantly. I just had a strange thing happen, suddenly the machine types in ALL CAPS by default. When I turn on the Caps Lock button (and the light goes on as expected) then the keyboard types lower case.
All is fine, except the Caps Lock functionality seems to be reversed. Light ON=Lower Case... Light OFF=UPPER CASE.
I have already repaired permissions.... I do not have any third party modifications or applications that modify the OS.
Pluggin in an external keyboard operates as expected, but the built in keyboard still misbehaves.
    Any thoughts?

I just had this exact problem occur to me a few days ago. My cap locks key reversed itself somehow. In other words, when it was engaged I got lowercase; when it was not, I got uppercase. In addition, some keys, like the apostrophe and quote key did other things.
This issue occurred after I ran disk utility and mac janitor in the morning, which I do every Friday am. I decided to re-run both programs later in the day and the issue dissappeared.
I was already running 10.4.6, so I don't think it has to do with the OS. Hope that helps somebody.

  • CAPS LOCK Behavior on 13" MacBook

I just purchased a 13" 2.4 GHz Aluminum MacBook, my first Mac coming previously from Windows PC's. I just have a dumb question that I can't find an answer to. On all PC's (and maybe on previous Mac's as well), if your CAPS LOCK key was on, you could hold the SHIFT key down to get lowercase letters without turning off CAPS LOCK. However, this behavior does not work on the new MacBooks, at least not on mine. Is there any way to turn on this behavior either using the SHIFT key or some other key? I could not find anything in any preference settings, and tried the other modifier keys and they did not work either.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

Activating caps lock means that the capital letters are locked on. To turn it off, press the caps lock key once again. In order to use both capital and lower case, use the shift key for temporary capital letters instead of the caps lock. The shift key override of active caps lock is a windows thing. -GDF
Well, of course I understand all of that. The issue is that I have situations where I need to type MOSTLY in CAPS for a long period of time but with lowercase letters thrown in the mix as well. I would hate to have to hold down my shift key for all the caps, or have to continuously turn the CAPS LOCK off to get a lowercase letter or two and then back on again. ALL PC's allow you to use a modifier key (usually SHIFT) to get lowercase letters when the caps lock is on just for this purpose. It surprises me that there is no way to do this on a Mac.

  • Bookmarks and Caps Lock problems

Sometimes when I try to open a window it does not open but goes to "Bookmarks".  Also, I am unable to unlock "caps lock".  These 2 things always happen together and I have to restart to get back to normal.  This just started a couple of days ago.  What am I doing to cause this?  Thanks!

If you see a black bar at the top, Private Browsing is enabled. You have to turn it off.

  • Caps Lock problem

I realised that sometimes when I click the Caps lock key, it never turn green, I need to maybe hold it slightly longer for a few more nano sec, before the key turns green. Is this normal?

Its an undocumented "feature", to prevent accidental Caps Lock activation. If you just tap it for a slight bit, it is unlikely to activate. If you press it for a bit more, like 1/4 of second, it will activate.

  • Wireless Keyboard Caps Lock Problem since 2007 - unresolved

My Mac Pro wireless keyboard "caps lock" stops working - if I reinsert the batteries it will start working again for a short period of time.  I've issues a case number with Mac Tec support; along with bring it into the MAC Store.  This issues has been brought to Apple's attention since 2007 and they have still NOT FIXED THE ISSUE.
    Any suggestions???

My Mac Pro (10.6.8) is set for automatic updates; and, I even check periodically prior to reminder.  I also was at the PeachMac Store yesterday and they, too, checked and my updates are up-to-date.  If you have a "patch" that can fix this - neither they nor myself are aware of it.  There are multiple, and I mean multiple complaints out there over the internet on this very issue dating back to 2007.  Is there a "patch" that should be utilized on my MAC that didn't come across with the updates?

  • Caps Lock problem FM9

not sure what i did, but the caps lock seems to be stuck ON in framemaker even though it is not selected "ON", on my keyboard.  If turn on the Caps lock then I get lower case.  It's exactly opposite.  I must have done something in a preference pane or something, but I can't figure it out. It used to work right.  Help

Perhaps you have changed the paragraph properties to be upper case? Check the paragraph settings, in the tab that has the "A" icon, there's a dropdown where you can select:
    Small Caps
    Uppercase
    Lowercase
