Captiave 2 - Adding Buttons to Question Slides

I need to use the Captivate Question Slide "maker" to create
interactive questions with navigation back to the "Jeopardy-esque"
main page. When doing so, the question slide maker prevents adding
buttons/navigation, etc.
Any work arounds, hints, suggestions?
Thanks...

Hi Beta Bob and welcome to our community
As you have seen, you cannot insert interactive objects
(Buttons, Click Boxes or Text Entry Boxes) on Question slides.
The only workaround I can think of is to sort of simulate the
question slide using these objects on a standard slide.

  • Inserting Buttons on Question Slides

    Hi all,
I am on CP5 Mac. In my module, I immediately thrust the learner into a scenario. If they can do it, fine; if not, I want help to be available. My plan was to have image buttons on the slide where they could see a worked example or look at a job aid. I just tried inserting a button on the question slide so I could navigate to another screen to provide the help and now I'm seeing that CP5 won't allow me to add a button (or other standard objects) to a question slide. I've also tried copying and pasting a button from another slide and that doesn't work either.
How can I insert these additional navigation buttons on a question slide? I have made the quiz optional in Preferences.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
If you can spare the time please submit this as a feature request. We really need to get this kind of quizzing functionality add to the next version of Adobe Captivate using the link I have included below.
    Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form.
Whilst I am sure that Lilybiri solution using Advanced Actions is probably the best way forward since you need to report to an LMS. I thought I would point out that if you are comfortable working in Adobe Flash Professional & ActionScript along with Adobe Captivate variables, and you don't need to report the button interaction to an LMS, then you could create this button in Flash and insert this as an animation (Insert > Animation). Just bear in mind that with Adobe Captivate 5 you would need to using AS3 since Adobe Captivate 5 does not support AS2.   Before Widgets were part of the Adobe Captivate feature set, this was one of the ways we used to add extra functionality to Captivate projects.
The use case is not that complicated, so let me write it out.
There is a quiz with, let's say, three questions. As user enters the module, they are allowed to see a worked example or jump into the quiz immediately to see if they already know enough to pass it. Most won't be able to pass the quiz right away though; that's why a training was created. To provide just-in-time support, there is an additional button on the each quiz question screen labeled "See a Worked Example." This idea of using worked examples as part of our training is strongly supported as a teaching tool by Clark and Mayer in e-Learning and the Science of Instruction (great book BTW). Anyway, this additional button appears on each of the quiz question screens. When clicked, the user jumps out of the quiz into the worked example. After they see the example, ideally, there is a button in the worked example labeled "Return to Quiz." This button jumps back to the quiz, preferably where they left off. Ideally, if the user chose to see the worked example before trying the quiz, the "Return to Quiz" button wouldn't display (i.e., it has to know that it's being accessed as a result of a jump from the quiz before it displays).
This approach allows the user to jump in and out of quizzes and would work well in a scenario-based training, which is what I am building.
    Best regards,
    Mark

  • Image button on question slides

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me the best way to add a custom image button to a question slide in Captivate 8.01. I need to provide a help section to users who are taking a quiz.
    Many thanks

I think you need to read this:
Buttons on Question/Score Slides in Captivate 6? - Captivate blog
The only interactive object that can be used on question slides, with some restrictions as you'll see, are shape buttons. And to make a shape button from an image:

  • Buttons on Question Slides

When I use question slides I find that the "Insert >
Button" feature is greyed out. Is this intended or some kind of
    glitch?

    I scornett
This is designed behavior. Buttons, Click Boxes and Text
Entry Boxes are all interactive objects and are not available for
insertion into question slides. These beasties have buttons of
their own that are controlled in other ways.

  • Buttons in Question slides, possible?

Hello. I'm trying to get around this. So far putting buttons in hasn't worked as it won't allow it, putting them in a master slide wont work as it wont allow it and really the only possibly I see that might work is an SWF button. My problem is (even though I know AS3) is I don't know where to start, and I am unsure how to apply my Captivate advanced actions to an SWF button, and to let it know what variables are set at and when they change.
Maybe there is an easier way? Can this be achieved at all, without using a crazy javascript menu overlay?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Have been blogging and writing some articles about constructing Question slides. There are some caveats: drag-and-drop is not possible out of the box, but you can have a fine Widget for that. It is a lot more work than using the default Questions. And you have to watch the scores closely, especially if you have to report to a LMS using SCORM. But if I have enough time I will always use my own questions.

  • Captivate 4 - Clicking back button on question slide takes me to next slide not previous slide.

I have my quiz preferences set to "user can skip quiz".  When I click the back button I'm taken to the slides AFTER the quiz question, not the slide before.  Help.

Please, which version do you use? If it is 6, exact version number.

  • Bring to front/back and rollover images on Question slides

    Hi All-
My feedback captions show through revealing the content underneath.  There is not an option to make them opaque.  Also, Captivate allows me to insert a rollover caption on a Question Slide (as opposed to a button which it does not allow) but the rollover doesn't work.  Suggestions? Please see me pdf attached.
    Thank you!
    Rita

All objects that are default to question slides (no separate timeline visible) are on top of the other objects. That has not changed.
I found some tweaking possibilities for shapes but that first rule is still valid: http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate

  • Add buttons to quiz-slide? Captivate 7

    Hi there,
I am really having a hard time trying to add buttons to a quiz-slide (fill in the blank).
Is it really true, that there is no work-around? All I need to do, is to use the smart shapes/ image buttons, to link to other slides in the project.
    Anyone??
    Thanks, in advance
    //Niklas

Maybe this blog post could help, because it is not always that easy to have
shape buttons on question/score slides. I encountered several small issues
and tried to figure out workarounds:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate
Post was written for CP6, but nothing really changed in 7.

  • Question Slide Buttons

I have an assessment that I created that uses a combines
question slides with interactive slides. I would like all of the
slides to uniform. The question slides were automatically created
with buttons to Back, Skip and Submit. These slides also added a
review area and a text box with question 1 of 15. I would like to
add these items to the interactive slides, but the program does not
allow these items to be copied. Can these items be added to a slide
not created as a question slide? If so, how is this done?

    Hi Carol
Taking your questions one by one:
-- You can change the standard quiz question buttons (Clear,
Back, Next, and Submit) by double-clicking them and changing the
button settings. This enables you, for example, to change them to
Image buttons (as in Rick's demo).
-- You can't remove the navigation (defined on the Options
tab in the Question properties dialog) from the Success and Failure
captions -- it is built in
-- You can't add your own custom navigation buttons to quiz
questions using buttons or click boxes -- these options are greyed
out on question slides -- so you have to make use of the regular
    quiz question buttons
-- The difference between the Skip (sometimes labelled Next)
button and the Submit button is that it navigates directly to the
next slide without submitting an answer to the current slide. When
the button is labelled Next, users often click this button in error
without realizing that they have failed to submit their selection
    as an answer.
-- I'm afraid I have no experience of the blue asterisks
resulting from the hot spot Quiz slides. I'd be interested in what
others have to say about this issue.

  • Button issues on Question slide

    Hi there
I have a simple quiz in my project which the users can skip
if they want to. I want the users can go Back from the question
slide. The back button works for the first time taking to the
previous slide(not a question slide). But when i again want to come
from the slide to question slide the Next button which i have added
stops working. Strangely if i dont have a question slide the Next
button works fine for simple slides.

    Thanks ravi
but i dont want any report for the quiz. It is a small
project for which i have inserted 2 question slides. Just want
users to try if they want to and if they press the correct option
they move on and even incorrect they move on...nothing to do with
    scoring or reporting.

  • Captivate 8: How to add a button onto a question slide to invoke some java script?

I have some question slides where the user has to guess an item on a picture. Because the picture is very small, I want to add a zoom button which calls a function in my LMS to popup the picture in a bigger window. I could not find a way to add a button where I can call java script, so I tried to solve this by using a smart shape with option "use as button" set and adding the java script action. This works fine for the popup but now the submit button on the slide no longer works. Clicking the submit button just disables the answers and stays on the current slide even if I did not click onto the shape button previously. How can I achieve my goal to display a bigger picture of an image on my slide on the users request?
I also tried the "ImageView" widget, but this is not a practicable solution.
    Thanks,
    Martin

I think I found the solution: In the "Timing" tab for the shape there is an option "Pause After" which was set to 1,5 seconds. I cleared this options and now the submit button is working again.

  • Adding variables to match question slides

    Hi All,
I am using Captivate 7 and need your help/idea/expertise on this. I am trying the following:
Adding a drag and drop slide wherein I should be able to drop the source to any target.
If the drop happens on the correct option (this is the challenge, how can I define the correct answer!), a message should flash saying "You are right"
If even a single drop goes wrong, then I the right answers should flash, (this I can create a new slide though)
But to set such conditions what should I exactly do? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Roja

The title of your question is bit confusing. Why should you have to add variables to match question slides?
The content of your question is totally different: each D&D slide can act as a question slide. It doesn't really have all the features of a question slide but most of them: Reporting, Score (only black/white, not partial score/penalty), Attempts, Actions On Success/Failure. When it is configured as a question its score will be reset when the user 'Retakes' a quiz with multiple attempts on quiz level etc. Progress quiz indicator will not be included however. And defining the correct answers is a breeze with the wizard or with the button Correct Answers.
The best part about D&D are IMO the 'Object actions': you can specify an advanced action for each drag&drop act and that is what you need. Do not use a simple action, because it will release the play head. That action can show a feedback text/object that was previously hidden, it can apply an effect to an object like flashing, etc. This blog post was written for CP8, but can help maybe:

  • Can Retake Quiz button take me to 3rd question slide of the project?

    Hi,
I am happy to join this forum. I hope anyone of you answer my question.
I am using captivate 4. I am not storing score onto any LMS.
I am developing an e-learning course of 30 slides. First 20 slides are content slides. I have 2 question slides as 14th and 15th slides. I don't want these 2 questions be part of my main Quiz which starts from 21st onwards which has 10 question slides. The quiz result page has "Retake Quiz Button" which is taking to the 14th slide which I dont want. Actually Retake Quiz button should take me to 21st slide only.(..and all the question slides in my course showing "Question x of 12". But I want this to show "Question x of 10" only). Because I have used 2 question slides (14th and 15th) to check the user for better understanding.
    Can anyone help me out.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Manoharan.A

    Welcome to the forum,
Each Captivate file, if you enable scoring will report a total score, in your case the score of the 'pre' questions and of the 'real' questions. Same with the progress (which you can disable).
Since your pretest only has 2 slides, to achieve your goal without having to create multiple files (pretest or final test separated from the main course), I would propose not to use the default Question slides for the pre-test, but to create them using standard objects, variables and advanced actions. This is perfectly possible for the most Question types, so which type did you use for the pre-test: true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank...? Instead of reporting the score the usual way (they get stored in the system variable cpQuizInfoPointsScored), I would store the results of the pre-test in a variable.
Both your issues will be solved: when retaking the Quiz, since only regular Question slides are considered as a Quiz, you will be taken to the first Question slide and the progress will be as you want it to be.
If you want to go this way, and need more help, please post your questions. I did publish some articles on use of variables and advanced actions but examples were made with CP5 (principles are the same). Captiv8r (moderator of this forum) has a gooberguide about Advanced actions (for CP4) that could be of great help:

  • Mystery Audio added to question slide

I am working in Captivate 4.
Whilst creating a series of question slides I came across a problem whereby one or two of the question slides would not move on after the correct answering of the question.
Turns out that the slides that would not advance had somehow got a short audio file attached (see under Slide 10 bottom left in screenshot).
Luckily I spotted this quickly, otherwise I could have been spending hours trying to resolve this.
    I have not added any audio to any of my question slides so wonder;
    a. What caused the small audio to attach itself to the slide ?
    b. Is this a known problem with Captivate 4 or others ?
    c. Do I have a problem with my version of Captivate ?

To do something like this in Captivate 5 you're probably going to need to create something in AS3, e.g. a Static Widget that does something similar to what you accomplished before in AS2.
If you already know AS2 then learning AS3 shouldn't be all that difficult for you.  There are plenty of resources on the web.

  • Added help button to quiz slide

I am trying to add a help button to a quiz slide. I would
like ti to pull up a slidelet or go to another slide with a image.
All my buttons and click boxes are disabled on question slides.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -Mark

    Hi Mark
I believe you could accomplish this as follows:
Create a blank Captivate project that is the same size as
your existing project. Create the slidelet as part of this project.
Define the rollover area and whatever else you need. Be sure to
pause the project so the slidelet will work without the playhead
    just moving on.
Publish this as a .SWF. You may DE-Select the HTML check box
so all you end up with is the .SWF.
Open the project with the Question slide. Edit the Question
slide and click Insert > Animation. Browse to and select the
.SWF you just created. This should allow you to insert a Slidelet
    on a Question slide.
    Cheers... Rick
