Captions apparently broken in Aperture 3.3.2

I'm running Aperture 3.3.2 on Mountain Lion, and it appears that Aperture isn't writing captions to the IPTC field when exporting images.

Please disregard this question. The discussion web site gave an error when I submitted it, but it evidently went through.

  • Video links broken in aperture

On my MacBookPro with only one hard drive, the links to movs that are stored outside of my Aperture library (they are in user>me>Movies) have broken -  the movie player controls have disappeared and the 'alias' button at bottom right has a red line through it.
Clicking on Locate Referenced Files shows that Aperture thinks there is another hard drive called 'null'. See screenshot below
Yesterday during battery operation, the MBP turned off and when on again, Aperture required a database repair - has something corrupted, and if so, what, and how to fix it?
    Any help appreciated.

OK, so I found the Aperture First Aid (option+command while double clicking on the Aperture library), and the database repair command solved my problem.

  • Adding captions to photos in Aperture 3

    Hi All,
I would like yo know if anyone out there has figured out a way to add captions to photos. I am a photographer using Aperture 3, and must be able to send photos to the newspaper with a caption along the bottom left of the photo. I would greatly appreciate the help.
    Thanks,
    George

    Ernie:
While it's possible to open an image directly from Aperture 3, or which was exported from Aperture 3, what you see will vary depending on what happens in between the time you export from Aperture 3 and open with the other application. For instance. If you opened directly into Photoshop CS4, then
There is a link about 1/2 down the Aperture 3 Metadata Issues page *(http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/imagedatabases/aperture3.html)* that is labeled, "Aperture 3 Exported Fields" which will take you to a spreadsheet showing you just all of the options I could find.
For instance, if you were to have opened the file directly from Aperture 3 (using the +*"open in external editor"*+ option), and then saved the file as a TIFF or PSD file, you would certainly see the caption field. However, if you save the file as a TIFF you will find that information in the following fields is not preserved: *ISO Country Code, Intellectual genre, Location, Rights Usage Terms, IPTC Subject Code*. If the image had GPS info, then that will not be preserved either, but that is a problem with Adobe Photoshop and the TIFF file format (a known issue that should be corrected in CS5).
If you opened in an external editor and saved as a PSD file, then the result is even worse. In addition to the five fields above, you also lose all of the *IPTC Core Creator Contact Info(CCI)fields (CCI: City, CCI:Country, CCI: Address, CCI: Postal Code,CCI: State/Province, CCI: Emails, CCI: Phones, CCI: WebURLs) as well as the IPTC Scene* field. That GPS information is retained is but small compensation.
If you export files from Aperture 3 as a JPEG or TIFF file, then th caption field will still visible, but a number of the same fields mentioned above will not be preserved.
If it were at least consistent across file format, regardless of method used to get the files out, that would be one thing, but the results are so varied it would push me to the edge of madness trying to compensate and correct after the fact. If you export, and then modify some of the metadata in Bridge, it's possible to retain more of the metadata, but this is a kludge that you have to remember to do each time after you export.
And this is even before mentioning the lack of support for things like star ratings!
If you dig a little deeper, you'll see there are problems. Granted if you are not a professional, don't use many of the fields mentioned, and don't share your images with others this may not matter much to you. However, for anyone wishing to use Aperture professionally these are very important issues that can not be disregarded.

  • Full screen mode broken in Aperture since Lion update?

Just been testing and it seems Lion or something has messed up Full Screen mode in Aperture. Any one else getting the same?

I click top right icon or hit 'F' and it eventually loads to the browser window but the dock is on top. I scroll with 'V' to get to desired view. Usually a beachball for 10 secs.
Leaving full screen mode using 'F' goes to black screen and just hangs or shows normal mode which then fades and goes back to black. Hitting Esc to get out gives me a black screen and nothing happens too.
Only way out is to use scroll left gesture on Magic mouse to get back to desktop. have to quit Aperture to get back to normal mode.
    And repeat...

  • Stamp function broken in Aperture

    Hello:
It appears the group stamp function in Aperture has stopped working properly. If I lift the keywords I want to use in a group of pictures and then proceed to use the stamp function only the highlighted picture is stamped. All the other selected images are not stamped.
Also, if I group a number of pictures, and then attempt to assign a keyword to all of them only the highlighted picture is keyworded. All the remaining pictures are unaffected.
Any idea what might be causing the problem and is there a fix?
    Here is my configuration:
    iMac 24" running SL 10.6.2
    Aperture version 2.1.4
I have attempted restarting the program and the computer with no success.
Thanks in advance for your prompt response.
    Dex

    Ernie:
Thanks for the input. The first method described in the link you posted is the method I have used in the past (for at least a year). The only problem is now it does not work. It only stamps the information to one of the images. The other images are unaffected.
I have not tried the second method (at least not for now) because it is not my normal work flow. More importantly, it is bothersome to have a feature stop working. Gives me the feeling other features might start to act up.
One way I have been able to make it work is to open the lift window, make the keyword choices I want, then while the lift window is open, I select the pictures/images I want to modify. Finally, going back to the lift window I then click on "Stamp Selected Images". It works this way but still, something is not right...

  • Apparently broken G5 iMac.

    Folks:
Got it a few weeks ago, made no additions to hardware, downloaded a few widgets and games, an EPSON scanner driver, installed Halo (the game), almost nothing else. Everything normal until two days ago. (It's a great machine for Halo!) Did some scans, downloaded some Halo mods. Suddenly machine got loggy, like some process hogging the CPU. No obvious reason, no obvious fix, so rebooted.
Now the machine won't boot, goes through the Apple logo - grey screen and hangs at a bright blue screen. Sometimes mouse-pointer control works, sometimes not.
Tried complete disk wipe and re-install OS-X multiple times. Tried resetting PRAM and then wipe and re-install. Tried all suggestions (except restting the power management unit) in Apple tech article 106464 "Your Mac won't start up in MacOS X" and the relevant articles it references.
No standard test or diagnostic indicates any problem, nor is there any error message displayed at any time. Starting up in verbose mode (cmd-v) results in a string of hard-to-decipher messages, none of them obviously alarming, and then the usual blue-screen hang.
Held down option key on boot from disti CDROM, ran Apple Hardware Test, "Extended" option.
The machine will reliably boot up in "Safe Mode" (tech article 107392). Connects to LAN in this mode, so I recovered what little data I had to another machine before doing first wipe and clean install. Seems to do everything I try in Safe Mode except running Marble Blast, which blinks the screen and then crashes.
Anything further I can do before I go back to Apple and say "It's broken"?
    Thanks,
    Henry

I'm not at all surprised that partitioning and unpartitioning and writing zeroes to the disk had no effect. Looks like the product specialist is hunting around for ideas. Like you originally said, there would never be any need to write zeros to correct a corrupted disk - once the disk is formatted again the disk couldn't care less about the previous content on the disk. After all, why would an old "zero" be less confusing to the disk than an old "one"? Makes no sense at all. Writing zeros is simply a way of securely deleting data.
This does not sound like a software problem - particularly given that it occured out of the blue, and a complete reinstall made no difference. It has the classic symptons of a hardware problem. However, it could be almost anything. But, given the atrocious reliability of the capacitors on the iMac mainboard I wouldn't be surprised if you find one or more bulging or leaking capacitors if you take the back off your machine. The symptons you describe are similar to those people with that problem suffer from. I had this very problem and had my machine replaced as it was the fourth major failure in as many months. If this is your first failure, you'll probably just get a new motherboard out of Apple.

  • My Ipod Touch AND my itunes are apparently broken

My iPod touch crashed while I was updating an app from app store. I had to get it to shut off and then turn back on with the white apple loading for 5+ minutes.
Then when I access my ipod touch, some things are arranged differently than I had them before. Also, now it seems I have the ability to cause apps to disappear (even the default ones like weather and stocks and itunes) by putting them on the 9th page of apps and putting another one on page 9, thus pushing the last one off onto a non-existent page ten.
I realize this is a problem when I see that I've accidentally knocked my App store app off onto this unreachable page ten.
So I figure I better sync my ipod touch and try to fix whatever is wrong.
Not going to work because now my itunes library is all fracked. See, I have been trying to save room on my laptop by transferring my itunes and itunes library onto an external hard drive. I deleted every scrap of itunes related things off my laptop hoping that when I sync my ipod I can simply access all the itunes material I have saved on my external HD.
I load itunes from the external HD and nothing is on it so...ok, I decide to open up the itunes folder on my external HD and physically drag everything into my itunes program before syncing my ipod again. It loads everything, even things I had deleted previously. It now doesn't match up at all and I am not even sure how to begin to make it exactly how it was.
I try to sync my ipod touch anyway to at least try to correct the problems I detailed at the beginning of this post. ...and I get an error message that my ipod touch is synced with another itunes library. An ipod can only be synced with one library at a time. what would you like to do? My options are "erase and sync" which replaces contents of the ipod with the contents of the itunes library. or "transfer purchases" which copies purchases this computer is authorized to play from this ipod to the itunes library. I don't think transfer purchases is wise. but "erase and sync" seems dangerous.
That seems like I would lose anything I downloaded onto the ipod since my last sync like 2 weeks ago.
At this point there are so many levels of failure that I am not sure what to do.
Any ideas out there? I know this is convoluted but I am sure someone here may be able to piece some logic together from it. Or is my ipod touch basically stuck on whatever I happen to have on it right now?
    .

UPDATE: I soft reset the ipod touch and now all of the apps that disappeared onto the mysterious page ten are now back. However I just now consigned "Stocks" app to oblivion once again so I guess that page ten still eats apps if I squeeze anything onto page nine.
Also my issue with itunes and syncing to this new library is still a problem.
Will I lose all my apps and, for example all my downloaded books for Stanza and ibooks if I were to select "erase and sync" with the newly formed itunes library on my external HD. I have been setting that library up and everything that was on my ipod is in here. But I don't know what the locations all my apps and the preferences or my books in my stanza or ibooks. is all of that self contained in the .ips files?
also, there are only 51 items in my mobile applications folder when I have over 100 apps on my ipod touch....so I guess I am screwed out of over 50 apps files since I can't find them to add to my mobile applications folder for syncing.

  • HotSync Apparently Broken on "Zire 21" Palm Desktop

    Good Afternoon!
I have a Windows ME Desktop Computer and a "Zire 21 Palm Desktop" device.
Yesterday our "Zire 21" Device failed to Hotsync the information into our computer. The computer was working fine, but the device is unable to Hotsync into the Computer. The Problem was that the Hotsync stalled and freezed completely. We eventually gave up and unplugged it and after a while the battery died.
We recharged the battery. Now when we plug the Device in it says "Connecting to the Desktop Using Cradle/Cable", and then comes up with "The Connection Between Your Handheld Computer and the Desktop Could Not be Established Please Check Your Setup and Try Again", even though it's all plugged in right.
Another thing that happens is that inside the Software Program, the Program on the computer works, but the menu for "Hotsync" has the options blank- you can't highlight them (Unlike the menu selections for "Help", for example).
    Post relates to: Zire 21

I got it to work by opening Hotsync manager from the start menu, which then led to it doing a "soft reset."

  • Aperture and iWeb and Captions

I'd like to notate my photos in Aperture and have the notations appear under each photo in an iWeb Photo template. I've tried using Metadata Captions and I'm still seeing filenames under the iWeb photos. I'm using the Media Inspector to drag and drop the images into iWeb.
    Thanks for any help!
    -=Tim=-

Sorry, I don't think I correctly read your question. I was trying to explain having your captions show in the Aperture web gallery, but it looks like you want iWeb help.
To show a caption, I have been double-clicking on the album (in iWeb) to edit the selected image. Then I go from page to page and edit the filename to be the caption I want. This doesn't provide but a few letters, so I try to make the captions brief.
Creating web galleries in Aperture isn't as simple as I thought it would be. Each time I've created one, I forget all the steps to doing it. I am hoping Apple adds better iLife support so it doesn't have to be a multi-step process and the metadata already entered can be used for the caption. I'm new at Aperture, so hopefully I haven't totally missed something.
If you find something easier, I'd like to know also because I've been staying away from Aperture Web galleries until this is easier. I put up a few albums on my site just to test, but am anxious to get new photos up when it isn't so tedious.

  • IWeb Photo Captioning from Aperture Metadata

I'm not sure if this should be under iWeb or Aperture. I use Aperture 2.1 and iWeb '08 2.0.3. In iWeb I have albums of photos from Aperture. When using the media browser for adding Aperture photos into iWeb, the standard nomenclature is for the iWeb caption to use the Aperture 'Version Name'. Since iWeb can be set to have more than one caption line, I was wondering if there was a way to map Aperture metadata into the multiple lines of iWeb photo captions? As it is, any additional iWeb caption lines have to be added manually. Can this additional caption information be added automatically?

I'm banging my head on this too.. I prefer to use iWeb for several reasons: one is that I publish to a non-Apple webhost; and I prefer the editing capabilities of iWeb vs Aperture/iPhoto -- plus the templates are more varied.
It's hard to believe that Apple doesn't provide this extremely basic capability. I've noticed other threads on this & it doesn't seem that it's possible.

  • Aperture 3 Export Watermarks Broken?

I've upgraded to Aperture 3 and I have re-added the watermarks that I used to use under Aperture 2 to the export presets. The watermarks that I have built are sized to fit into the lower right corner (i.e., 128 x 128 for a 2048 x 2048 export). When using those watermarks, they appear to be scaled up to the size of the photo (instead of just overlaid in the lower right 128 x 128 pixels). If I turn on "Scale watermark, the watermark comes out smaller but still about double size (i.e., about 256 x 256).
Is anyone else having this problem? Should I be creating a 2048 x 2048 watermark to get the scaling correct? Is export watermarking broken in Aperture 3?

yes it definitely seems broken. i have a PSD file that is my watermark with just the text "(c) scott nichol * www.silverystars.com" and its about 500 pixels wide. when i export for the web its usually an 800-1000 pixel wide image and the water mark is pinned to the lower right or left hand corers. if i leave "scaling" off, that 500-pixel wide watermark image is stretched across the entire bottom of the image. if i turn scaling on, its scaled down to an almost micro text size that's barely readable. and it doesn't matter how wide i make the image, it gets scaled down to the same size.
my work-around for now is to keep the text in the PSD document the same size and extend the canvas so there's about 700 pixels of padding to the left of the text. now if i leave scaling off it fits that 1200-pixel wide image into the bottom of the image. and since the exports are only 800-1000 pixels wide, the watermark is about as big as it was before.
clearly this is a bug and this can work for me in the short term.

The specific link you posted does not work for me either, so I'm assuming there's an Adobe server problem somewhere, or maybe a problem with that particular link.
I've noticed Adobe has failed to update a number of its pages for the new Photoshop CC 2014.1 release.  For example, where is a new page that describes where Photoshop CC 2014.1 keeps its preference files?

  • How can I read out metadata for captions from a Canon photo

I have to tried to find an answer via Adobe and Google. Still not able to figure out on how to read out XMP metadata for captions out of my photos. Checking the XMP data in InDesign shows info on Camera Make, Exposure etc. But if I use metadata fields from "Caption Setup" like "Camera" the caption shows <No data from link>. Fields where the XMP field name matches (e.g. "Lens") are ok. I need following fields for the caption: Camera Make, Exposure (aperture and speed) and ISO.

    Lets keep it simple then.
If I take my utf file generated and open and view it in notepad I can see the accented characters. But if I open it in Wordpad , the accented characetrs are corrupted.
If I then save the file specifiying type Ascii, then the characters are written out correctly.
What I want to do is to be able to write out the file in ascii format without having to open it in utf-mode and then having to save it in ascii.
Ie I want the file to be opened in ascii format
All the characters to be written in Ascii format
But the source is still a unicode database.
I have gone through using convert and characters get lost. In fact, at this stage, I'm not sure its possible to do What I need to do.
Remember I am using an 8 bit character set which is why I have values above 127.
So basically if you take the word 'Annulé'
if I view it in wordpad it displays as
    Annulé
But if I view it in notepad it displays as
'Annulé' which is because notepad detects that the file has a utf-8 character in it.
When I save it as type ascii I can then open it correctly in wordpad.
So I basically want to open this file in Wordpad and have it display Annulé rather than the garbled characters,
without having to go through the process of opening and saving the file as type ansi.

  • Comparing iPhoto 09 and Aperture 2

I am giving a presentation on iPhoto and Aperture. Is anyone aware of a comparison table showing the significant differences? It does not need to be too sophisticated, just the basic differences.
I stopped using a iPhoto a few years ago when I moved to Aperture, in part because of the horrendous filing system at the time. iPhoto 09 is very different from the program I abandoned and has certainly closed the gap - no doubt some of the features will make their way into Aperture 3.0, when that appears. Anyway, I was hoping someone could show me where I could find a basic features comparison which I could use to show participants.
    Many thanks,
    Graham

Some Differences between Aperture and iPhoto.
iPhoto is firmly focussed on the Domestic market, especially on the Point and Shoot user. Aperture is aimed squarely at the Professional shooting RAW. This pretty much explains the differences.
Aperture has much higher hardware requirements than iPhoto. iPhoto may use more disk space (though with high quality Previews in Aperture there may be little difference). Put it this way: the principle difference in terms of Hardware is that iPhoto will run comfortably on any machine Apple makes.
Aperture has much better fine control over Processing Raws, though it uses the same engine for this as iPhoto. However, iPhoto can process and edit RAWs too. iPhoto can send a RAW file to an external editor, which Aperture cannot. The both support exactly the same RAW formats, and the same file formats.
iPhoto neither reads nor writes all of the IPTC data that Aperture does. But it can write to the Exif (date and time) and it can write to the IPTC (Title, Keywords and Caption) on Export. Aperture is much stronger in this area.
iPhoto has better slideshows, especially in iPhoto 09, with six different styles, much better slideshow exports options too, up to HD quality - actually any Slideshow export is better than Aperture’s
Books are limited by Template in iPhoto, all elements of a book are editable in Aperture. Aperture has no support for printing Calendars and other items.
Aperture has much better support for Referenced Libraries. Running iPhoto in Referenced Mode is tricky, especially when the Originals are stored on a different volume. There is no easy mechanism for re-connecting Originals and therefore migrating to a new volume or even a new machine can be a bear. Aperture is much better for processing and managing large numbers of files. That said, iPhoto is good for 250k images, and we’ve seen reports over on the iPhoto forum of Libraries in excess of 100k. Users report some performance issues.
Both are integrated throughout the OS and in the same ways. They have limited integration with each other.
I smile when folks refer to iPhoto’s “convoluted” filing system. This impression comes from people trying to access the files via the Finder. Have you ever looked inside an Aperture Library?
    Regards
    TD
