Captions in Captivate 3

Hi All
I have designed a new template for my project, however when I choose to insert a text caption (which has 5 'states' versions) and select the name1.bmp from the program folder it will only bring one in to the drop down list for me to select. It follows that each time I want to use a text caption I have to browse to the program folder, select the correct 'state' so it is available in the Text Caption Properties window, and so on and on and on. Very tedious. I cna include up to 3 versions at the minute but if I browse and select another then the first will not be available in the drop down again!?$#&^%$
As well, its my understanding that if the 5 states are named the same, then selecting one should make all 5 available within the Text Caption properties window.
Couple of images attached - trying to make this comprehensible.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there
In order to make the other caption styles appear with the one you selected, you need to copy the set to where Captivate stores its captions.
For me, this location is D:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 3\Gallery\Captions. For you, the location could be a bit different.

How to include closed captions in Captivate? I found that the
option is available in Accessibility, but it is disabled. How to
enable it? Anyone can help me please?

    Welcome to our community, prabuu77
Closed Captioning is not available in Captivate until you add
a sound file. The thought is that you add a sound file containing
audio narration. Then you may add Closed Captioning.
Once you add a sound file to a slide (tap the F6 key and you
may add a sound file) you should see a Speaker icon on the slide in
the Film Strip. Click the Speaker icon and the menu that appears
    should list Closed Captioning.

  • Variables in email reporting or quiz variables in captions for captivate 4?

    Hi,
    Captivate 4, cp4
I have been all around the forums without getting an exact answer to what I want to do. Perhaps there isn't one but, anyway...
I am trying to collect quiz information. I just want a simple collection of data that shows that someone has completed the quiz, which just a set of multiple response statements, and who that someone is. I have started by using Text Entry Boxes (TEB) to collect their name and assigned a variable (v_Name) to this to reuse the information in a certificate. So far so good and this works. I have set up email reporting on the quiz and, providing users actually hit the button and accept both messages, the email gets sent. All I am looking for in the email is that a user has completed the quiz. The score and results do not matter. Now, here comes the issue. I would like to record the user's name (v_Name) in the quiz results that are emailed in. No matter how many reporting options or marks I give the TEB or what options for reporting I select the information will not appear in the emailed report. I can set up a question slide to ask for the name and this will appear in my emailed report but will not appear in my certificate.
    Any ideas?
I have tried to play around with padMail in the resulting HTML to try and draw out the variables but had no luck (I am a JavaScript novice).
Is there a way of emailing a slide view? Or a widget to do this (I have been unable to find one).
LMS is not a solution at the moment and upgrading is unlikely to happen as I am still trying to get all Captivate users in the office up to 4 from 3!
Is it possible to take a quiz answer and use it like a TEB variable and put it into another slide via a caption? E.G., $$Interaction1234$$ or some action script to make v_Name = interaction1234?
I am looking for a simple solution. I have looked into all of the post to database articles and they have been somewhat helpful but I am only trying to capture simple data so as the users can just be ticked off as having completed it.
I am not holding out much hope. It seems quizzing in Captivate is good for self-assessment and to provide branching but the reporting feature is a bit of a failure.
Thanks very much to anyone who just reads this and gets this far!
Even more thanks to anyone who is willing to share ideas.
    Greig

Email reporting has so many potential failure points that (in my opinion) it has to be considered one of those reporting options that you only use as a last resort when nothing else is open to you.  LMS reporting is by far the best way to go, but that's just not an option for many people.  Adobe kindly provided External Server Reporting as an option in Captivate 5, but that also requires access to a server running PHP and at least some technical exoertise.
In your case, the only things I can suggest trying are to make sure your publish folder location has been added to Flash Player Global Security as a trusted location, or to upload your published project files to a web server and test from there.  Sometimes this email reporting issue turns out to be Flash security related.
The email reporting widget is definitely worth a shot and is very inexpensive when you consider how many hours you can spend trying to chase down these issues.
In the end, if you get email reporting to work reliably, consider yourself one of the lucky few.

  • Scrollbar for closed captioning in Captivate 5???

    Hi,
Why is Captivate the red-headed step child and doesn't have a way to scroll the closed captioning text???
Does anyone know if this is possible? Sure, you can increase the height of the closed caption box, though this is not correct usability wise as it will obscure the content behind it when it is visible even when setting the background of the closed caption box to semi-transparent.
    Dan

I hope there are no red-heads or step children in the forum audience, or you might just have made yourself unpopular.
Hair coloring and family circumstances aside, Captivate's default behaviour for caption text is much the same as that for most other Flash-based authoring applications.  For example, try adding a scrolling text caption to PowerPoint, or any of the Rapid Authoring tools based on that platform that produce SWF output.
It's very easy to bag an app just because it may not have A particular feature you want, and in the same breath ignore the fact that it also happens to have such a commanding position in the market because it actually does far more than other apps overall.
For example, if you DO want to create a scrolling text area in Captivate you can do so with this widget:
    http://www.dorna.nl/?p=574
Widgets allow for extension of Captivate functionality in more ways than you can count. How many other e-learning authoring apps can you list that offer that capability?
Maybe this explains why I've always had a thing for red-heads...

  • Need help with quiz captions in Captivate 6

I have a six slide quiz set up in Captivate 6. I can get it to work but I need correct and incorrect captions to pop up when the answers are submitted. I am having difficulty figuring out how to make that happen.
I want to click submit for each question and have either aa correct or incorrect caption come up.
My other option is to wait and submit all and then when they go back to review (if they do) when they see their wrong answers, a caption will be there to tell them why it was incorrect.
Can anyone give m any insight to how to make either of these happen?

    Hello and welcome,
Success/failure captions are already there, you can customize them on each slide. It is even possible to have more than one failure level (if multiple attempts on question level) and have different feedback based on attempt.

  • Closed Captions in Captivate 7

I am a "power user" of Captivate, and have just migrated from version 6 to version 7. A vast improvement by the way.
So far, it appears that I can only write closed captions one slide at a time. But there are various solutions in other "cloud" software that I'd like to see Captivate 7 incorporate.
What about writing closed captions "on-the-fly"? Instead of saving each slide's captions and closing the dialogue box, why not just advance to the next slide and continue writing closed captions? If one types more slowly, why not use the "tab" key or something similar to pause the audio until the typing catches up with it? This would be a tremendously convenient feature.
What about auto-captioning in the way that it's done in Adobe Presenter Video Creator 9?  For slower typists, this feature would allow for editing words that did not translate properly, conveniently.  Please note that YouTube, too, offers auto-captioning in a like manner.
These are two features that could go into an incremental upgrade of Captivate 7, no? If not, then please release Captivate 8 with these features ASAP!
For higher education, the context for creating closed captions is urgent and very high priority. Landmark court cases are forcing our college, and likewise all others, to ramp up accessibility and to do it as quickly as possible.  The features I'm suggesting would facilitate that ramp-up.

  • Captions in Captivate 2 Library

    :sad
I was hoping that the Captivate 2 library feature would
enable me to reuse captions and click boxes in addition to
backgrounds and images. I can't figure out how to import captions
and click boxes into the Library...is it possible?

I would like to see that too.
But for now I made a template from a completed project.
You might want to try the import feature -- With Objects and
grab a few slides from a prior Captivate project and see if you
    "inherit" those?
The Caption list has a last item that lets you Browse to
picka caption. I have been using this with CaptivateBlue_SPACED
that I created since I set my right and Left margins in the SPACED
versions to 20. Once you import them AND press APPLY, they are in
the project, etc. Now save the project as a template and they are
    there.
The good part about saving your project master is that you
    get, for example:
    - Your cover slide / logo
    - Your default buttons for navigation
    - Your default slide quality [Normal, Etc.]
    - Your default fonts and sizes
    - Your backgrounds
    - Your image library, buttons, etc.
Let us know if Importing from another project, with Options
    is a solution or not?

  • Closed Captions in Captivate 5 - location, justification

Tried searching the forums for an answer, but search appears to be broken...
Can you center justify the words in closed captions?  Or otherwise format the text (bold, etc.)?
Aside from buying a widget, is there any way to move/resize the caption bar?  Ideally I'd like it to appear below the recording but above the nav bar.  Is this possible?
    Thanks for any help.

If you seriously want to voice your displeasure to Adobe, please consider sending them a message using the channel they are tuned into. That channel is the Wish Form and is also the same page used to collect Bug Reports. Link to the form is in my sig.

  • Closed captions with Captivate 5

Although, I went through the help part and some of the earlier discussion it didnt solve my problem. I would simply like to include sub-titles (close-captions) on my slide. these are the instructions I followed:
Select the check boxes in the closed captions column and corresponds to the notes you want to convert to closed captions.
    Click Closed Captioning.
In the Closed Captioning of the Slide Audio dialog box, adjust the start time and end time for the caption.
Click the + icon to add additional closed captions. Click the ‘-’ icon to remove closed captions.
Click CC Project Settings to change the font, size, color, background, and the number of lines in which the captions must be displayed.
the thing is: although when I click on 'Captions & Slide Notes...' under 'Slide Audio' , the text seems to be included only under the Slide Notes and not under the Captions. And it does not allow me to copy/paste the text under the Captions tab. When I try checking the preview, the sub-titles are not visible.
I know I am working in the right area but just need a hint so I can finally have the closed captions. Screen shots would really help too:)
    Thanks.

  • Video captioning and Captivate

    Hello guys,
I thought I could caption embedded video clips with Captivate
but the feature only applies to captioning the audio slides. Our
presentations will have video clips and because of 508 compliance,
we need to caption them. We also need a video player that is
accessible. Supposedly, JW Player is the most accessible.
So, my question is, has anyone had to display embedded
captioned movie clips inside Captivate And instead of using
Captivate player skin, using the JW player instead? I am new to
Captivate and don't know how to do this.
    Thanks

I just looked at the JW Player website and from what I can
see it uses flashvars and javascript in order to work properly.
In it's current form I don't think it would be possible to
integrate JW Player in your Captivate projects. Since the code is
open source it would be possible to customize the JW Player to work
in Captivate, but that requires codingskills in Flash.

  • Captivate 4 Captions

    Hi all,
I have just purchased Captivate 4 for the use of building
scorm courses for my company's LMS. Could anybody help with the
    following 2 issues.
    1. I have seen in some scorm courses (not created with
captivate) that you can provide learning to the user with 1 word at
a time in a paragraph. Like the sentences are almost being typed 1
word at a time. If you can do this within Captivate, could somebody
    let me know how?
    2. Some of my slides contain text that looks almost grainy
with text that looks fine. All of the settings for the two captions
appear to be the same. The nearest comparison I can give is that
its the difference between outputing a flash file (from an old
version) and having 'Use Device Fonts' unchecked. Is this an
    anti-alias type problem?
    Would appreciate anybody's input.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Welcome to our community, Chris
You are probably seeing the difference that happens when you
mix captions using backgrounds with transparent captions. The
captions using backgrounds (Adobe Blue, Adobe Red, Cosmos, etc) do
not have anti-aliased text. But most often the transparent captions
cause Captivate to anti-alias the text. If you want all captions to
have basically identical text appearance, you can coax Captivate to
NOT anti-alias text on transparent captions.
The simplest way is to just place the cursor at the end of
all the text, press Enter a couple of times, then apply a bullet to
the very last line. After this, adjust the caption so the bullet
    isn't visible.

  • Captivate 8 Failure Captions Glossary Widget

I've run into some apparent conflicts between the Glossary Widget and click box and button failure captions in Captivate 8.
The course uses the Captivate Glossary widget, which is placed on Screen 1 and set to "not visible", unless the user reveals it.
A button is available on Screen 2 and ff. for revealing the Glossary. It calls an Advanced Action whose main item is "Show the Glossary widget".
Later in the course there is a practice activity based on a software simulation. A scenario is provided and the user is asked what they should do next? There is a click box for the user to click, and a failure caption is supposed to appear if the user clicks in the wrong place. (Hint and Success captions are turned off.)
Here are the problems I'm having:
The button for opening the Glossary on Screen 2 was originally set to display for the rest of the project (i.e. on every screen starting from Screen 2). With that setting, the click boxes in the practice activity still work, but failure captions do not appear. If I turn off the "display for the rest of the project" setting, put a separate Glossary button on each screen, and send it to the bottom of the timeline, the failure captions begin working again. This is a big hassle that I would prefer to avoid, but obviously I will do it if necessary.
However, even with one Glossary button per screen, the failure captions work only if you never reveal the Glossary widget. If you actually reveal the Glossary widget, the failure captions no longer display, although as I said the click boxes continue to work in other respects. I tried changing out the click boxes for buttons that did the same job, but the same problem exists.
Has anyone experienced conflicts between widgets and click boxes? Any suggestions for how I might tackle this problem?
    Thank you!
    David

Right now the click boxes are set for infinite attempts. Other properties include:
    Pause project until user clicks
    Hand cursor on
Go to next slide on success
    Show failure caption
Those properties all work except "Show failure caption". I've played with number of attempts and different caption types but to no avail.
RE: the Glossary versus the button that reveals the Glossary: you may be right that the Glossary per se is not causing the conflict, but I can't really tell. The button calls an advanced action with three steps:
    Pause the project
    Show the Glossary widget
Show a Close button for closing the Glossary widget (this is actually a SmartShape that's being treated as a button)
This Close button also calls a simple advanced action:
    Hide the Glossary widget
    Hide the Close button
    Continue the project
I appreciate the time you took to respond to my posting!

  • Exporting Text captions - Non MS word possibility

    Captivate 8.0.1.242 - Windows 7 - 64 bit - swf format.
Is there a possibility to export text captions with the need of having MS word in my computer?
Frankly, I hate MS word and I always stick to LaTeX. Hence, I do not have MS word in my computer. But I would still like the possibility of exporting the text captions in Captivate file to a doc file such as Libre Office so I can send it people who prefer using Word it to translate content.
Also I really prefer not getting a licensed version of MS word which I'll never use, just to do this exporting possibility.

Ok. I did export it in XML and opened it in Notepad. Kinda got scared and scarred by it.
But I opened it in the browser and it was ok. But still the content was not in 2 columns and so on. So is that expected from XML file? I have to manually create the 2 columns like the way captivate does it while exporting to word?

  • Closed Captioning - Remain on Screen

I'm experimenting with Closed Captions in Captivate 3. I'd
like the text in the caption to remain on the screen until the end
of the slide. Seems like the text (by default) goes away as soon as
the last syllable of audio has been spoken. I've tried adding a
second or two of silence to the end of the .wav file but it doesn't
    seem to help.

    Hi Three Penguins
easy win here. If you have extended the audio the cc caption
length can be increased by adding a new caption right at the end of
the audio (you can leave this new caption blank if you wish). This
resets the end time of the cc caption to co-incide with the end of
    the audio

  • Closed captioning line break

Is there a way to add line breaks to the closed captioning within Captivate? I've been copying and pasting my text from Word and adding the line breaks there. But sometimes you just need a line break right way and don't want to use Word.

Yes.  Open the Slide Properties for the slide containing the CC you wish to edit, then click on the Audio Tab.  Now, Click on the Closed Captions button and a new dialog box will open containing your CC text.  This is where you can control timing of your Closed Captions as well.
    Hope this helps!
