Captions in Mobileme

I'm stumped. How do I have captions applied in Aperture show up in a MobileMe slideshow?

I, too, would like to know how Aperture captions can be made to display in my MobileMe galleries rather than file names. I use captions to explain the subject of the photo to the audience. File names are meaningful only to me. Since I post to the galleries for others to see, captions are what I want to display. Incidentally, the captions do appear in photos from the galleries via RSS in the news reader.

  • No captions in MobileMe gallery?

Is there no way to publish a MobileMe gallery with pics that have captions underneath them? I wrote the captions in the info pane of each pic in iPhoto, but when I published, the captions were not there. I hope I'm missing something, because not being able to post captions is ridiculous.

    MM:
There is a way to do what you want. It involves running an Applescript that replaces the photo's title with the captions before you publish. You can then revert the titles back to the file names with the Photos->Batch Change->Title to File Name menu option.
The Applescript can be found here (be sure to read the comments to the post to catch the error in the script): An AppleScript to copy iPhoto Description to Name
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Batch Change Version name to use Caption - for MobileMe Gallery

Hi, is there a way to batch change the version name files (which is what MobileMe can use to display under the picture) to use the Caption? The Caption is what I believe is/can be used in the regular galleries/web pages exported from Aperture, MobileMe seems to work a bit differently...
    Thanks for thoughts.

    Jonas,
I don't believe that can be done with any procedure supplied with Aperture. Settings for a MobileMe Album only provides the choice of Filename or no filename. Whether there is a hack somewhere to switch Filename and Caption, en masse', I do not know.

  • Aperture - iWeb - MobileMe...  WORKFLOWS WANTED!

I come seeking advice, and hoping this online essay will spark some discussion on the much-needed integration of Apple-apps online photo sharing and display capabilities -- and I promise to keep the rants to a minimum...
    *What I'm trying to do:*
Create a series of Aperture-published (or at least Aperture-based, since that's where my pictures reside) photo pages, pages on which visitors can...
    1) Quickly peruse the thumbs (with column&row arrangement, sizing, and framing options all determined by me), while also reading some descriptive text I've provided re the overall event being showcased;
    2) View individual shots at a modest but adjustable display size in Slideshow mode (with transition options I've set), and simultaneously see the associated Caption, Date and whatever other Aperture-stored metadata I've chosen to be displayed for that set of images; and then, if they so desire...
    3) Download selected images at their original, FULL-pixel dimensions (assuming I've set the page to allow that).
    4) PLUS, I want to have each of these individual pages indexed on an iWeb "Album Page", which allows for the contents of each individual photo page to be mouse-skimmed before actually clicking and going to that page.
    *An Impossible Dream?*
Not really. Everything I've just described is relatively easy to do -- but only in bits and pieces, it appears -- using Aperture, Aperture-published MobileMe Albums (aka Galleries) and Aperture-published Web Pages, iWeb '09, iWeb's Media Browser, and a MobileMe account. So now I find myself playing Dr. Frankenstein (that's "Fronkensteen"), and trying to stitch together a new form of photographic life online.
In other words, I'm just trying to create the kind of truly functional and flexible photo pages which SHOULD be a no-brainer by now, since all the features I'm imagining already exist! (Then again, I shouldn't ask for too much -- I mean it's not like Aperture, iWeb, and the MobileMe service are all from the same company, right?)
    *In OTHER other words...*
I want to publish Gallery-esque pages from Aperture, but ones which automatically include and display whatever combination of Caption, Title, Date, or any other Metadata I select. And ones which can be INDIVIDUALLY indexed on an iWeb Album Page, as opposed to simply dragging in iWeb's MobileMe widget (which so far as I can tell just gives you a single link to ALL your Galleries in one quick but inelegant whack).
    OR...
I want to publish Aperture Web Pages, but ones which aren't given a ludicrous "homepage.mac" URL (cripes, how old is THAT code?), and which can be easily seen by iWeb once published, so they can then be dragged into iWeb Album pages for convenient indexing and one-stop skimability by the user. (Also, pages for which Aperture has some sort of "Settings / Visit Page / Announce Site" pull-down button as it does for every MobileMe Gallery -- that's just being consistent.)
    OR...
I want iWeb's Media Browser to let me select and drag into iWeb the contents of specific Aperture Projects and/or Albums, but with all Caption, Date, and other metadata for the selected images included, AND (if I so choose) at their FULL resolution -- rather than only at their currently-designated Preview size, which is now the case.
    *Whichever way you describe it...*
I'm not really asking for anything all that new, just for some long-overdue integration between the already-existing photo-publishing abilities of Aperture, iWeb, and MobileMe. But before I start submitting more pages of "isn't this obvious?" input to their respective Feedback sites, I'd love to get anyone's thoughts, reactions, or best of all, suggestions as to how to at least partially achieve, the kind of Aperture-based photo publishing & sharing sites I'm still hoping to create.
Many thanks (if only for reading this far!),

Many thanks to both David and Bob for the above posts -- it's just nice to know I'm not alone in this frustration.
Sometimes I desperately wish Apple would appoint a CAO (Cross-Application Ombudsman), a "Minister for Inter-Application Affairs", someone whose only job was to track the functions and features in different Apple apps, to correlate that understanding with relevant user input from a dedicated AppleWorkflows Feedback page, and whose mandate was to then:
    a) make sure that the interface of each app behaved in a consistent and predictable manner (so that, for example, Option-clicking a disclosure triangle in a Viewer window list of video filters in FinalCut had the same functionality as Option-clicking a disclosure triangle in a Finder window list of folders and sub-folders -- which it currently DOES NOT);
    and
    b) - most importantly - make sure the individual apps talked to each fluently and interacted in logical, productive ways (the subject of this thread being a prime example of where that's NOT happening).
This person would have the authority to force the programmers working on different apps to actually talk to each other BEFORE new versions get released; to imagine intelligent, creative ways in which the different apps should interact-- and then require the programmers to implement those scenarios. Essentially, the CAO's only reason for coming to work each day would be to oversee the conception, development and implementation of cross-app workflows which benefit and free up (rather than block and frustrate) the multi-Apple-apps user.
The key is that this person (or persons) would have to be given some real power -- not just to recommend, but in many cases to actually require. (For instance, this person would long ago have required the Aperture team to release a free update which no longer published anything to a "homepage.mac" URL. All together now: "Duh".)
And, as mentioned above, they would have their own separate and well-publicized AppleWorkflows Feedback Page (plus a dedicated public discussion forum as well?), to which users would be actively encouraged to submit their ideas on Inter-App problems and possibilities.
Call me crazy -- but that's my dream, and I ain't givin' it up.

  • HT201317 I have a MobileMe account and have shared many MobileMe Galleries.  MobileMe Galleries are going away in June.  How can I share a photo album with others using iCloud?

I have a MobileMe account and have shared many MobileMe Galleries.  MobileMe Galleries are going away in June.  How can I share a photo album with others using iCloud?

The new ios version of iPhoto allows sharing.  Here's a blurb from Apple's web site:
There’s the old way of creating photo galleries, then there’s the iPhoto way. Select a group of photos and iPhoto automatically flows them into a beautiful journal that’s fun to personalize and share online. Touch a photo to make it bigger or smaller. Or drag it to a different spot on the screen. iPhoto adjusts the page around whatever you’re doing, so your journal always looks great. You can even add captions, maps, dates, and weather — giving family and friends the big picture at a glance.
    More things you can do:
With iPhoto, there’s more than one way to share a photo. Post pictures directly to Facebook, Flickr, or Twitter. Play an impromptu slideshow on your iPad or iPhone. Or stream photos to your HDTV to give your big moments room to shine.
I have not used ios version of iPhoto to share "journals" and I'm not sure this is part of iCloud or not.  You'll have to do a google search on "ios iphoto" and read up of this journal thing.  As far as I know, this is the only way of sharing photos.  I'm not sure whether other friends use a browser to view these journals or whether they need something special.  Any way - search around to find answers.

  • Photo names in MobileMe Gallery?

Is there a way to make Aperture use the photo's caption field as the title for the photo in the mobileme gallery?
There's the checkbox to tell it to use the version name or not which doesn't seem very useful to me.
Should I just copy and paste from caption to version name?

    My mistake
I had forgotten that it's just what Aperture does for some
    unreasonable reason !
    It puts 20 if there's space ? !

  • IPhoto09 re-arranges photos in mobileme gallery.

I am working in the MobileMe gallery and iPhoto09 keeps re-arranging the photos. I attempt to sort by date/time and nothing happens. If I try to manually move the photos, the software re-adjusts them and then the captions are no longer associated with the pictures. In iPhoto08, I did not have this problem. Any ideas?

No.  Once the MMe servers were taken off line over a year ago all files were no longer available to users.

  • Gallery Captions

    Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a way to add a caption or change photo titles for pictures that appear in MobileMe galleries, while leaving the original title unchanged in Aperture?
For example, all my pictures taken in Tanzania are numbered in Aperture (i.e, Tanazania 1 of 949 or 200 of 949, etc.) and I like it that way. However, when I post the pics to a MobileMe gallery I'm stuck with that same "Photo title" (Tanzania 200 of 949) and would instead like it to read "Out on Safari" or whatever.
I know that I can just change the title in Aperture, however then I have all my photos numbered 'cept for the occasional "Out on Safari" (or some other "viewer friendly" title).
When I view my photos in Aperture I like 'em numbered. But when I post 'em to MobileMe, I'd like to customize the title, while keeping the same number-title system in Aperture. Is this possible? Is there a work around? Am I missing something (more than likely)?
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

Thanks very much in advance for any help or advice

    Julian:
Others have had that problem also. A work around is to use this script to write the comments to the Title. The title is displayed in the web galleries. When you want the file names back just use the "Photos->Batch Change->Title to File Name" menu option.
NOTE: Before compiling the script in Script Editor remove the one occurrence of the character Å in the script.
    Do you Twango?

  • IWeb photo captions published via ftp?

I'm new to iWeb - are photo captions published via ftp now that MobileMe is defunct?  The info in Publish Site says no.  As I wish to use photos purchased and downloaded from a stock agency, they must be captioned with the photographer's name.  I can work around this by acknowledging the photographers in a list above the Album I've created rather than under each photo (if this proves to be acceptable to the stock agency), but this isn't ideal.  Thanks for any advise you can offer.

Captions added to the images inside a photos template are published no matter where you publish your website.

  • Update caption in iPhoto and push to iWeb

    scenario:
    1) i have photos imported to iPhoto and have created albums
    2) i have used iPhoto albums in iWeb photo albums
    3) the iPhoto captions are properly displayed in iWeb and its albums - except:
3b) when i update the captions in iPhoto - which i assume should be my "master" file for photos -- the captions are not pushed to iWeb like photo additions/deletions are.
is there a way to force an update from iPhoto to iWeb to pick up caption changes to my photos?
    thanks

If you want an automatically updated MMe gallery in one of your iWeb pages you can do it as follows:
1 - create and publish a MMe gallery from iPhoto. Use iPhoto to keep it updated.
2 - open the MMe gallery in your browser and get it's URL.
3 - in iWeb embed the gallery into your web page using iFrame code and an HTML snippet as seen in this demo page: MobileMe Galleries and Quicktime Movies
The demo uses the URL for the mosaic mode of the galley. You can use any of the available modes as the default to display in your web page. Granted it's a wee bit larger on the page than a gallery created in iWeb but it will be automatically updated whenever you update it with iPhoto.

  • How do i ftp to MobileMe (without doing it in iWeb)

I have had several problems publishing to MMe.
I have had to republish my whole site several times and i'm frustrated and fed up. The site is video and images, but mainly video clips that are anywhere from 35 to 100 mb in size.
I decided to publish to a folder, and upload to the MME site from the site itself. Now I see another problem.
    1. iWeb published the first 2 albums, everything was visible, text and images.
    2. I added more pages to one of the albums, as well as 2 more albums and published to a folder.
    3. I uploaded the index.html and feed , as well as the album.html pages that published to the folder, but don't see the text on some of the albums ... Why?
    4. At MMe, i'm uploading the new pages into Media of one of the albums, but i can't upload the 4 folders as i can with fetch: i have to create a new folder and upload its contents, one folder at a time. This is very tedious.
How can i use Fetch to upload my site to MME? What settings do i use, if anyone know?
I am so frustrated with MMe and iWeb right now ... the other part of our site is hosted elsewhere, but because of limited space we moved the image/video files on MME. I have no trouble using Fetch with the other site, and it took the image files fine originally, too.
But now I have to use a slower connection, and having to rebuild the MME site for the 4th time in 2 months is a real pain! ... I just can't do it again.
    Thanks for any help possible
    Elizabeth

    Thank you Ethmoid
I use fetch because I got a license to it for our non-profit organization and it has worked for our other host. I didn't realize there was a different ftp language. I can download Cyberduck and give it a try for MobileMe.
I think I have partly solved my problem. Awhile ago i was having similar problems and was told to drag and drop the files to the iDisc from my computer and last night i finally figured out how! So i uploaded one whole album (only took 6 hours) and didn't time out once. Now I'm uploading pages of another.
But one problem i see is that the front page of an album that I uploaded from the MobileMe site itself is missing it's text and captions. I've tried republishing and uploading the album.html again, but it's still not right. Maybe it will fix itself once all the album pages are there.
However, for future reference in case i give up on this method and turn to Cyberduck, what path do i follow to connect and reach my files? Is this info on the site?
    Thank you
    Elizabeth

  • Captioning photos -- not possible???

Am I missing something obvious or is there no way to add a caption to photos using iPhoto? I'm not looking to make a caption on a print, simply embed a caption in the file itself (as is possible with just about every other photo manager program).
Can anyone point out what I am missing?

Hello there. Along this subject line, I have added descriptions to all of my photos in iPhoto. When I upload the album to Picasa Web Albums, the description show up under each picture, which is really slick. However, when I upload the album to MobileMe, I only see the option of showing or not showing the title name. I don't see any way to make the descriptions show up. I tried to rename the title to the description in iPhoto using Batch Change but that was not one of the fields you could set the title to.
Is there any way to display captions/descriptions in a MobileMe photo gallery?

  • Web Galleries and Captions

I know that in order to show captions in a Web Gallery you must copy the caption into the Version Name field. For the most part that works okay, but some of my captions are longer than the image is wide, so it gets cut off. Yes, you can see the whole thing by mousing over it in the index or selecting the I-button to flip it over. Neither of those are intuitive to my viewers, however, and even the I-button field isn't quite long enough for a couple of them.
I found an Aperture plugin that makes a flash-based gallery with Captions that can be exported to a folder. The plugin is called "Flash Album Exporter." Its only downside is that you must export it to a folder and then upload it to your iDisk. If you are hosing somewhere besides MobileMe, that is fine, but I prefer the simplicity of one-click publishing directly to MobileMe.
Is there a better solution for this?

    Bob,
When captions are a key factor, I publish as a Web Page, and not Web Gallery. The features of easy downloading for the viewer is not there, nor is the full screen slideshow, but it is a good choice to provide images of an event where the viewer may not have been there themselves and need lengthy captions.
With a Web Page, you can keep the version name, and simply also provide the info you enter into the Caption field of the metadata.

  • Caption to show in Gallery

I'm having a heck of a time getting captions to show with photos in Galleries. I try Caption, I try Titles in metadata. I believe Keywords is more of an organizing too. Caption or title doesn't seem to get then into the gallery and viewable to my clients.
Is there something I need to turn on or off to get a caption with a photo?
    Thanks ...

So sorry. thanks for responding. Gallery is MobileMe display. I'm taking an Album in Aperture, clicking on Mobileme to publish for others to see in the form of a gallery which is a MobileMe feature. When viewed via web browser, captions for the photos were not visible. How to make them visible was my question and that was answered.

  • Caption from Aperture 2 disappeared?

I have just installed Aperture 2 (trial version) to test it out. It is working out well, except when it comes to exporting to MobileMe gallery. The meta info, especially Captions, do not appear on the published MobileMe gallery.
Has anyone any insight into this?

This same thing it happening to me. I can't find a particular pattern as to what is causing it. I have found some reports that there is an Aperture bug that whenever a master is modified (like by adding a geotag), Aperture blanks some of the data.
