Captivate 2.0 Bugs Beyond Oblivion

You know, I have to say. 2.0 is a lot worse than 1.0. The
bugs are killing me. I am a software developer myself and am
producing training for the products I develop. I run into one thing
after another constantly and it's extremely frustrating. There are
so many bugs, I don't have time to report them. You must know about
them because every Captivate 2.0 user is experiencing the same
problems I am; I just know it. Here are the bugs causing me the
most grief: Import an animation and you can't use the menus. The
work around is, empty the library of unused objects and then it
works. Another huge irritation is you want to change the animation
for a selected object. You can't. The original one just keeps on
coming. You have to save your animation (from whatever program it
was generated to begin with) with a different file name, import
that and then it works. The work around is to delete the animation
altogether from the library and add it from scratch. Another thing,
you try to import a new animation, but you have to click the "OK"
button no telling how many times before it is imported into
Captivate. There are so many more. I don't need to upgrade, but is
3.0 any better? It's ridiculous that 2.0 users should pay the same
price as 1.0 users because 2.0 is riddled with bugs. I'm not
upgrading to 3.0 because of this reason.. Adobe should reconsider
the upgrade pricing for 2.0 users because of the numerous flaws in
2.0 that we have put up with that 1.0 users have not. I expect near
perfection in software programs because most of the ones I use are
near perfection and I deliver high quality products to my clients
as well. Please don't misundestand; I know that all software
programs have bugs, but not to this degree. Someone please hear
what I am saying. This really shouldn't be too much to ask. Thank
you for reading this post.

Hi Jerilyn
I'd never suggest that any version of Captivate is totally
bug free.
However, it appears (at least on the surface) that most of
the issues you are citing are related to using animations in
Captivate. So I'll be happy to try and see if I might shed some
light or otherwise be helpful with a few suggestions.
Import an animation and you can't use the menus. The work around
is, empty the library of unused objects and then it works.
While your workaround seems to work for you, I have to say it
is probably a red herring and is partially correct. For one thing,
what would happen or how would you go about fixing it if you
imported two different animations back to back? If you emptied the
library after the first one, there should be no unused items to
empty for the second, no? What the actual answer is, is to place
focus on any library item. I have no clue as to why it works this
way, but work this way it does. And this is not an issue in
Captivate 3. Thank goodness they fixed that one, because it drove
me almost as crazy as everyone else that experienced it!
Another huge irritation is you want to change the animation for
a selected object. You can't. The original one just keeps on
coming. You have to save your animation (from whatever program it
was generated to begin with) with a different file name, import
that and then it works. The work around is to delete the animation
altogether from the library and add it from scratch.
I'm not certain it will work for you here, but you didn't
list it among what you have tried. So I'll offer it as a possible
workaround. Actually, if it does work, based on what the steps are
labeled, I'd have to say the developers intended for it to work in
this manner. You mention "Changing the animation", which I'm
assuming you mean that you changed elements inside the animation
save for the file name. You wish to "update" the one inside
Captivate easily. So I'd try this. From the Library panel, locate
the animation. This is easily done by right-clicking the animation
on the slide where it appears and selecting "Find in Library". At
this point it should be highlighted in your Library panel. Now
right-click the animation in the Library and select "Update...". If
this works as I believe it should, the animation you updated on
your hard drive should be pulled inside Captivate and update the
copy inside Captivate.
Another thing, you try to import a new animation, but you have
to click the "OK" button no telling how many times before it is
imported into Captivate.
Okay, I'll admit that this one is pesky with no known
workaround I'm aware of. I do believe it is related to the flashing
menus thing. Because the dialog has focus, you cannot click an
object in the Library. So you are correct in saying that it may
take a few clicks to get the OK button to recognize it has been
clicked. And yes, this was part of the issue I addressed first, so
it has been corrected in Captivate 3.
Now I'm no developer and I didn't even sleep at a Holiday Inn
Express last night, so I can't even purport to be one.
But I was advised by someone close to the
development team of Captivate that this whole niggly issue is a
result of some incompatibility with certain versions of the Flash
playback components and Captivate. I'm guessing that you may be
able to resolve most of it by simply changing your Flash playback
components. If you have version 9, perhaps consider downgrading to
8. Or maybe even 7. Here are a few links that may help:

  • Captivate 8 - Save bug?

About 50% of the time when I save, Captivate 8 tells me my project will be saved from version 7 to 8. But it's already been saved in CP8 many times.

    Hi,
The issue is under investigation with our team.
Here is the scenario where the Issue will happen.
    Steps:
         1) Consider a Captivate 7 project, Let say "abc.cptx".
         2) Open the Project in Captivate 8.
         3) Save it to convert it 1st time to Cp8 project.
         4) Close the project.
         5) again open the same project. The project will become dirty automatically (known issue).
         6) When user tries to save the captivate 8 again pops a dialog box to convert Cp7 project to Cp8. ( This is the issue that users are facing.)
    So conclusion is,
    1) user re-opening the Cp7 converted project in Cp8 will always be prompted with a dialog to upgrade the project. This issue is under investigation and this issue will NOT CAUSE ANY DATA LOSS in project that was saved in previously opened session of the same project.
    2) While saving the project after countering the Upgrade Dialog box once in a session, user should not get any another Upgrade dialog box in consecutive saves till the project itself is not closed and then re-opened during the exercise.
Apart from above 2 specified behavior any type of other issues found related to upgrade, Please feel free to report here.
    Thanks and Regards

  • Captivate 8 RGB bug?

I'm trying to use RGB values to edit the color of an object.  I select the object, open the Fill property, and choose the Color Picker.  Regardless of what numbers I enter, the color results in dark gray or black as I tab through the values.
Hex code works fine, but if I enter  #FFFFFF and it shows white, without entering any additional numbers just tabbing through RGB, it turns to #020202.
Anybody else have this problem, or is my Mac being surly?

Agreed, I wish colors were better linked throughout.  I do think it's a step in the right direction, though.  It's clunky, but not as much as it was!
In line with color, I also wish some design elements could be brought more under the rest of the Adobe products.  I find myself constantly using keyboard shortcuts I use in Photoshop or Illustrator, only to get the Error Noise of Doom from the OS.  Just little things, like the Zoom tool and Hand tool, would be really helpful.

  • Captivate 7 - The Exit Bug and a Solution

    Hey Everyone,
I wanted to take a second and share some good information I found in regards to SCORM and the Exit functionality in Captivate 7. Below is the blog post that shows how to make the Adobe Exit functionality "SCORM Compliant" and solved my issues when uploading my project and getting them to exit. Hope this helps
Captivate 7, Exit Bug and a Solution
Several of our Inquisiq R3 users have alerted us to the fact that courses developed with Captivate 7 published to HTML5 and SWF do not close properly when using the “Exit” button, forcing the user instead to manually close the browser window by clicking the “X” in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
Through our investigation into this issue, it appears that the process that Adobe has implemented when clicking the “Exit” button is to simply attempt to close the content window and rely on the LMS to capture and commit the session data. Nowhere did we see that the content was actually calling the “LMSFinish()” [SCORM 1.2] or “Terminate()” [SCORM 2004] methods in the LMS’s SCORM API to commit the lesson data to the LMS as required by the SCORM specification.
Adobe uses their own defined function, “DoCPExit,” to close a lesson window.  This method contains a “window.close()” call and additional logic to “bubble up” the command through the frame parents (if they exist and also contain the “DoCPExit” method - presumably because they would also be Adobe-published content files within your package).
There are several flaws to this approach.
By not calling “LMSFinish()” or “Terminate(),” the content is, by definition, not SCORM conformant.  Part of the minimum requirements for conformance are that the content calls the initialization method “LMSInitialize()” in SCORM 1.2 or “Initialize()” in SCORM 2004 and the  termination method “LMSFinish()” in SCORM 1.2 or “Terminate()” in SCORM 2004. The LMS is not required to clean up the data left behind when the content fails to make this call. So if your LMS doesn’t take this additional step (of setting ‘LMSFinish’ or ‘Terminate’ if the lesson does not), your data will be completely lost…i.e. no record of you taking the lesson will be recorded.
The call to close the browser window will fail if the LMS is running the content within a frame or iframe. Since the SCORM specification allows content to be launched in frames or iframes (in addition to new browser windows), lessons need to be able to accommodate this scenario. Even with the “bubble up” logic, once the call reaches the top most content window, and the next parent window in line is the LMS container page, the call will no longer be passed and a “window.close()” call will be fired within the framed page.  When this call is made, nothing will happen as a framed page cannot close the browser window using this command. Through our investigation, we’ve learned that at least 4 other well-known LMSs have experienced this particular issue.
Ironically, the solution that we’ve discovered is not only SCORM conformant, but also very simple and follows what we would consider to be SCORM “best practices”.  The foundation and logic for the solution is already contained within the published Captivate files (and it is the same solution whether you publish to SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004).
We simply modify the “DoCPExit” method that is contained within the “Utilities.js” file to call the “Finish()” method.  Just replace all the code appearing between the “{“and the “}” as you see here:
    function DoCPExit(){     Finish();
The “Finish()” method that we have inserted is, as mentioned, already contained within the published Captivate files and contains the logic to properly set the exit parameters and correctly identify whether the content is SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004; it will therefore make a call to the correct close method (“LMSFinish()” or “Terminate()”) accordingly.  Once the LMS has received this command, it should take care of removing the content properly, leaving no need for any “bubble-up” logic or window close calls within the content code.
Overall, if the lessons you develop with Captivate 7 work as expected and required in your LMS, there is no need to implement this change. However, if your lesson’s Exit button is not working as it should, and/or you are losing progress and status data when closing the lesson, the fix described here should resolve all those issues.
The biggest issue here is that since we’re changing published code, the next time you update and publish that same Captivate project, you have to remember to change that published function code AGAIN, as Captivate will simply publish the default code.
We have been in touch with the Captivate team to discuss this problem and they are investigating. We would hope a patch to address this flaw would be released in the near future
All credit of this fix goes to http://blog.icslearninggroup.com/2013/10/captivate-7-exit-bug-and-solution.html

Try clearing out your project cache (Preferences > General > Clear Cache) then republish using the option to Force Republish All Slides.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may be seeing the early stages of project file corruption.  Check the suggestions in this post about troubleshooting issues where you may need to copy all slides to a new blank project shell to try and strip out corruption:

  • Captivate 6.1 Javascript bug / subscription edition

    Hello all,
I'm working on a SCORM 1.2 compatible eLearning project on Captivate 6.1.0.319 (subscription edition), and I've just come across the bug described very precisely here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq9K9lvq-5I
    and here:
    http://www.cpguru.com/warning-adobe-captivate-6-and-javascript-bug/
Basically, any javascript used in the project would break the SCORM compatibility, either sending wrong completion information to the system, or in my case, also shutting down the eLearning module and also closing the window. This problem occurs only in IE, as other browsers seem to work fine.
My target group of users is a corporate environment, in which IE is the #1 platform; it's unrealistic to ask for a browser update, so I have to find a solution to be able to publish the project correctly. The same blogger who uncovered the problem wrote that it's possible to receive a patch from Adobe which consists of an updated version of the file Mainmovie.swc to swap in one of the program's directories (more info here: http://www.cpguru.com/fix-for-the-adobe-captivate-6-javascript-bug/ ).
The problem is that the supposed fix (which you have to request via email and it's not directly downloadable), is said to be available only for Captivate 6.0.xx and not for the 6.1 Subscription edition.
As my project contains a lot of drag and drop interaction, I cannot afford to downgrade to 6.0 to try to use the patch, and I was wondering if somebody has had the same problem and can help out.
In detail, I only use javascript in one slide to simulate a random display of rollover images (a button calculates the current position of the playhead and jumps to a random point of the slide, chosen from an array of predefined frame numbers; at every 'stop' there is a different rollover image and a button that makes the playhead jump again to display another 'random' image).
I was wondering if there is any way to reproduce this behavior not using javascript, so that if there is no fix (I'm obviously in a very tight deadline...), I can get around the problem by avoiding javascript altogether.
Thank you very much for your help!

You can open 6.1 files in Cp version 6.01.  So that IS an option, though albeit probably not a very palatable one if you've just upgraded everyone around you to 6.1.
If your main reason for developing in 6.1 was the drag and drop interactions, you may not have been aware that there have been AS3 widgets available to do drag and drop in Captivate since version 4.  Those widgets are also now compatible with all Cp versions up to and including 6.01 and 6.1.

  • Why is Captivate 4 so expensive for Aussies?

Sorry people, complain / whinging here, not a question:
Can anyone explain why my Captivate 4 upgrade costs so much more just because I'm based in Australia?
How can something priced USD299 be A$482?
My company's been a loyal Captivate user since the macromedia version 1, and we've never even called Adobe for support since the forum and other online resources are so good.
Just doesn't make any sense to me, but unfortuantely everyone from Adobe to Apple thinks it's OK to rip us off.

    Hi there
Hopefully Michael's suggestion will work for you.
Just to let you know, the issue extends beyond AU. I have a good friend in England that has the same issue. I may be wrong, but I think it's got something to do with the fact that things are in other countries and different languages are used in many places. As a result, they have to localize into the other languages and an additional expense is involved with that and it drives up the cost of the software.
Unfortunately, you likely use English where you are and localization isn't really needed. So you are effectively subsidizing the cost for the other countries where English isn't the main language.
Just my .02 worth. But given today's economic conditions, I think I probably owe you $20 because of the devaluation!

  • Captivate 3 - Slides don't display

I've got a user who has a LARGE .cp file - about 51MG - and when he opens the presentation, the slides don't display.  I can see 70 items in the Library, but the Storyboard, Edit and Branching views only display one blank slide.  Title Bar says Slide 1 of 1.  I've copied to my Desktop because the presentation takes 'forever' to open from the Network and thought maybe that might be part of the problem.  But don't know what else to try.
Is the file just too large?  Anything we can do to fix it?  Here's the Info on the Project:
    Thanks!
    Deb

    Hi Deb
Unfortunately the project is likely corrupt. There is one thing to try at this point. Create a blank project that has identical project resolution. Then try importing a few slides from the problem project. If that is successful, rinse and repeat as needed until you recover.
Beyond that, it's time to drink a strong Margarita, roll up your sleeves and rebuild the project again from scratch. Assuming you have a working SWF, you can use it as a guide.
Best of luck to you... Rick

  • Captivate 5 TOC not working?

Hi all - I'm new to Captivate 5 so please go easy...
I added the TOC, turning off pages, but creating folders (checkbox checked) to show chapters in the TOC as opposed to individual pages.
Now with the "Navigation Enabled" checkbox selected, I was expecting to "jump" to any of these chapters in my TOC and play the captivate SWF from there... but it doesn't work!
Any ideas on why this is? Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Welcome to our community
One of the more common issues with what you are seeing is that folks create Question slides and sprinkle them through the presentation. Perhaps slide 10, 20 and 30 are question slides. But folks also will configure the Quiz settings so that the questions MUST be answered before being allowed to proceed. And if this is the case, Captivate will disallow navigating to a slide beyond the first unanswered question.
Hopefully this will help you figure out why it appears to be failing.

  • Captivate 5.5 Buttons and Jump To Slide Not Working

I have a home slide where users can choose from 10 state-specific training options.  There are 178 slides in the total presentation.  When I open the presentation fresh a couple of the buttons work and jump to the correct state.  One button jumps to a different slide than what is defined and the rest of the buttons do not work at all.  If I select one of the buttons that works then return to the beginning of the presentation all the buttons work fine.  The problem occurs when I open a fresh copy of the published presentation from my hard drive.  The buttons are all active and there is no click box on the slide - you need to click on one of the state buttons to continue past the initial slide.  I cannot understand why this is not working or why everything works fine when I return to the home slide from somewhere else in the presentation.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi there
Buttons may seem a bit hit and miss and may be daunting with all the Active VS Inactive timeline bits and all. But I've really never known them to totally fail or be all that random.
    Things to consider with Buttons.
    What does the button do?
As I explained in my earlier reply, if a button is programmed to jump to a slide a lot farther down the track, and that portion of the track hasn't yet arrived from the server, this could well be an issue.
Another thing that can affect whether a button operates as you wish is if you are trying to jump to a slide that is beyond a Question slide (or a slide being treated as a Quiz slide) and your Quiz settings are configured so that each question must be answered before you may proceed. Captivate will disallow visiting a slide beyond the first unanswered question.
Sometimes a Button is configured to open a URL or a file. And it works fine during preview within Captivate, but fails after you publish. This is most often an issue with Flash Security Settings blocking the action and is described at the link below:

  • Captivate 4 - not exporting publishing avi.

My goal was to record what I was doing on screen. Then create an avi file out of it. When I published, there was no output file.
    STEPS I TOOK:
    1. Opened Captivate 4, and chose "Software Simulation".
    2. I set it to record full screen on my single monitor. I then set to full motion recording.
    3. I started recording for about 30sec, and stopped. The recording showed up as a bunch of slides in Captivate.
    4. I went to the publish menu to the media section.
    5. I set to publish as AVI, entered project title, selected destination  folder, set video - 'Cinepak Codec by Radius'. Audio is set to 'PCM'.
    6. When I hit the 'Publish' button, it processed, and a video of the first slide appeared. I closed it, and it took awhile to close.
    7. I checked the output folder, and there was no output file. There is no output file anywhere.

    Hi there
I know this will come off sounding a bit flippant, so I offer any apologies in advance.
The answer to this is riddled in a question: "How long is a piece of string?". Of course the answer to that is a big ole "it depends", no?
I consider it to be this way. I compare Camtasia and Captivate to be similar to Cars and Trucks. Both are vehicles that get you where you are going, but each really has a different purpose. Sure, you can use a car to haul loads. But is it really the proper tool? Perhaps you need to haul lots of building materials. I've seen folks strap all sorts of things onto the roof of the car. It gets you there with the materials, but nowhere nearly as easily as you would if you had a truck, no?
Or, perhaps you are a home improvement enthusiast. (I happen to be one) In my garage I have a portable circular saw, a portable sabre saw, a table saw and a compound miter saw. Each tool has a unique purpose and I use it according to its strength.
Sure, Captivate offers a Full Motion Recording feature. It works. But it doesn't work as well as Camtasia does if full motion is what you are really looking for.
As for exporting to AVI, there could be many factors at play. Compression, CODEC and who knows what else? What about interactivity? Do you have Click Boxes and other interactive elements? I don't believe an AVI supports interactivity beyond allowing the user to control the movie with a playback control of some sort. So it seems reasonable to me that if you had interactive objects in the movie that perhaps Captivate might choke when attempting to render it out.

This project is navigable from the table of contents until the final two slides.  You cannot click on the last two slides (Slides 45 and 46) to view while in the course.
    - I have hidden the Quiz Review Slide (Slide 47) because we do not want the results displayed.  This does not seem to be the issue. When I unhide the slide, I am still unable to click our last two slides "Practice Session" and "Exposure Control Plan."
    - I have selected and unselected "Self-Paced Learning" in the TOC Settings

    Hi all
One thing that will prevent the TOC from behaving properly is if you have question slides sprinkled through the project here and there. If you configured the Quiz settings so that every slide MUST be answered, you won't be able to navigate beyond the first unanswered question. Sometimes this makes you think the TOC is broken, when in fact, it's simply respecting the setting and not allowing the user to navigate beyond the unanswered question.

  • Is Captivate / E-learning suite right for my needs?

Is Captivate / E-learning suite right for my needs?
Having been on hold for over 90 minutes to Adobe yesterday, and searching Adobe.com and You tube for info I am throwing my request for information at your collective feet.
The organisation I work for needs to deliver some e-learning modules, these are informing on non-software based actions and information.
We have had modules professionally designed for us in the past (almost certainly in DW or flash) – the number that we need for the next 12 months has grown, although each individual module is smaller – so professional design is less attractive due to minimum costs per module.
Content at the moment is delivered as a page or frame of text, with still pictures, video, and audio content. Roll over information, and links through to supporting documents and web sites. The user then clicks on through the pages as they demand. Finishing with a quiz and a certificate of pass mark.
The core of any information I have found about Captivate 4 represents it primarily as screen recorder. I need to build a module outside of screen recordings.
Is captivate the product to do what I need?
I can’t find any in-depth information beyond “it’s a great screen recorder and software demo tool”.
There doesn’t seem to be any supporting documents, books, videos that could be used as a platform for training users how to work with Captivate 4 – and I can find no face to face trainers in Australia.
If anyone to shed some light on what captivate is capable of doing beyond screen recording, and if there is any training available online / from books / or face to face in Australia I would be very happy to hear from them.
The available delivery formats that Captivate can output would be very helpful too – as a government organisation we have a limited amount of software / updates we must work with.
    Many Thanks
    Gav

  • Naming Buttons - Problem with using Captivate 7 Buttons to Open URL or File

After spending too much time troubleshooting a button problem, I discovered the importance of naming each item in a Captivate project.
For some reason I have yet to figure out, publishing to SWF from Captivate causes buttons to function arbitrarily. In my case, I had eight buttons pointing to external URLs, three that worked and five that didn't. All of the buttons pointed to the same external website, only to different PDFs hosted on that site. Each button was named with the default "Button_X" convention as set by Captivate. After trying lots of different settings adjustments, On Enter and On Exit actions, and Play/Pause timings, I did what I should've done from the beginning; changed the names of the buttons.
Why this worked? I don't know. I've seen hints on other discussions as to SWFs not working well when there are a lot of unnamed or default-named items. If there's some logic to this I would be happy to know it, but for a default setting to cause such a bizarre problem is beyond my comprehension. I could understand if I had named the buttons incorrectly, but I didn't do anything to them; I left them with the names created by default.
Hopefully this helps someone else resolve a similar issue and, if anything, encourages everyone to follow best practices and use a clear file naming conventions for all projects.

  • Layer Shuffle in Captivate

    Goodmorning All,
I have one query for which I need your support and help. Basically, in Captivate , when  I complete the work and close the file. The next day when I again re-open that file in Captivate, the layers shuffles. Say for example, the layers order moves up and down. Sometimes, the frames in the layers goes beyond what I settled down in the last checkout.
Could you please look into this and help me out?
    Regards,
    Firoz

    Hello Firoz,
I would suggest that you try removing the .dat file and see if that makes any difference. You can locate the .dat file via the following path:
    Windows XP
    Drive Letter \Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
    Windows Vista
    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
If that doesn't solve the problem then please report this issue to the Adobe Capitvate team using the web address I have included below.

  • Exporting Captivate 4 mpeg4 to Camtasia 6.01

I just thought I'd let the community know that it is possible
now to import Captivate 4 mpeg output into Camtasia 6.01 and create
the file formats that Camtasia will allow. Camtasia version 6.02
will be available soon which will generate flv output.

    Hi there
I know this will come off sounding a bit flippant, so I offer any apologies in advance.
Hopefully this was somewhat helpful... Rick
