Captivate 4 - not exporting publishing avi.

My goal was to record what I was doing on screen. Then create an avi file out of it. When I published, there was no output file.
STEPS I TOOK:
1. Opened Captivate 4, and chose "Software Simulation".
2. I set it to record full screen on my single monitor. I then set to full motion recording.
3. I started recording for about 30sec, and stopped. The recording showed up as a bunch of slides in Captivate.
4. I went to the publish menu to the media section.
5. I set to publish as AVI, entered project title, selected destination  folder, set video - 'Cinepak Codec by Radius'. Audio is set to 'PCM'.
6. When I hit the 'Publish' button, it processed, and a video of the first slide appeared. I closed it, and it took awhile to close.
7. I checked the output folder, and there was no output file. There is no output file anywhere.

Hi there
I know this will come off sounding a bit flippant, so I offer any apologies in advance.
The answer to this is riddled in a question: "How long is a piece of string?". Of course the answer to that is a big ole "it depends", no?
I consider it to be this way. I compare Camtasia and Captivate to be similar to Cars and Trucks. Both are vehicles that get you where you are going, but each really has a different purpose. Sure, you can use a car to haul loads. But is it really the proper tool? Perhaps you need to haul lots of building materials. I've seen folks strap all sorts of things onto the roof of the car. It gets you there with the materials, but nowhere nearly as easily as you would if you had a truck, no?
Or, perhaps you are a home improvement enthusiast. (I happen to be one) In my garage I have a portable circular saw, a portable sabre saw, a table saw and a compound miter saw. Each tool has a unique purpose and I use it according to its strength.
Sure, Captivate offers a Full Motion Recording feature. It works. But it doesn't work as well as Camtasia does if full motion is what you are really looking for.
As for exporting to AVI, there could be many factors at play. Compression, CODEC and who knows what else? What about interactivity? Do you have Click Boxes and other interactive elements? I don't believe an AVI supports interactivity beyond allowing the user to control the movie with a playback control of some sort. So it seems reasonable to me that if you had interactive objects in the movie that perhaps Captivate might choke when attempting to render it out.
Hopefully this was somewhat helpful... Rick

  • Exporting to AVi file

I want to use captivate to export an avi file. I'm creating a
movie with other video elements in Pinnacle and Pinnacle does not
recognize swf formats - any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi sunteeser and welcome to our community
Unfortunately, Captivate doesn't offer this ability. It's
like saying you want to use a table saw to drive a nail into a
piece of wood. The tool simply wasn't designed for this purpose.
The only possibility that comes to mind is to maybe pull the
Captivate file into Flash and perhaps create AVI output from that.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Captivate 5.5 published files are not visible in Fire Fox or open in new window.

When I publish and post Captivate 5.5, the HTML or the swf files do not display in Fire Fox (latest version) without forcing the file to open in a new window (if it displays at all). If it does work, the Flash security blocks the swf on an ugly view until the user clicks.
I thought it was because I have to assign a direct URL to each component, but all of the other Captivate sites I have reviewed have the same issue when viewing in Fire Fox.
IE will display after the active x is authorized (I can live with that).
You Tube and other Flash display properly in Fire Fox, just not Captivate products.
I have disabled off all plugins, modified the protected settings, and everything I could find listed in the Fire Fox help. I have installed a previous version of Flash and Shockwave Player. Short of reinstalling windows, it is not working and that will not help because the published content is not visible on any other machine in the office or at home.
The files are in a Portal, so I cannot share them unless you are in the DoD and have an AKO or DKO account.
However, here is another example of the Captivate not working.
https://clc.dau.mil/games (this displays on some computers, but not all)
http://www.hartisd.net/pages/uploaded_files/Assignment_Search.mht (After allowing the mht, this displays in IE)
I am not sure if it has something to do with the other 2 published xml files that are not directly referenced in the html, but I just need either the swf or html to display in the iframe without forcing another window to display and without a lot of dependecy issues with other add-ons in Fire Fox.
    - Thanks!

Any of the DAU games, if they display. It is a government site, so they have the standard gov garbage (stuff not working like certificates), but nothing is harmful nor can they do anything to track other than the current session.
It is kind of weird how the content is displayed... It is not an intranet, it goes to a limited access portal. When I store content, it uses an absolute path instead of relative path. Very aggrevating when using many of the tools for non-programmers (like me), and probably more aggrevating for programmers.
Whether I point directly to the .swf or to the generated HTML, the content displays in IE, but not in FF.
It may be a combination of FF and Captivate. FF seems rather flaky in dealing with swf files. There is the consideration for add-ons, but I tried on a newly imaged computer and it still was not working. Even after going through all of the FF steps to get it to work.
Basically we had to create a new HTML file to display the content because the Captivate published files don't work. However, the new HTML does not reference the XML files.
When I publish, I get 5 different files, .swf, .htm, .js, and 2 .xml. When I dig through the code (once again, not a programmer, soo I may be missing something), even round tripping to Flash, I do not see how the .xml files are referenced at all.
These may be different topics, not sure, it came up because I am trying to get a simple solution from the product that can be easily transferred to our production servers and available for Solders to access.
    - Thanks
    Michael

  • I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (.m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing)

I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (e.g. .m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing), all I want QuickTime to do is export the file in a compressed format. Bizzarely, if I shutdown and open QuickTime many times I can occasionally export a clip as another format (maybe one in 10 times). I have seen that other users have had a similar problem after clipping files in QuickTime but this seems to be a slightly different bug in that all I do is open the file and then try and export the file as is - either way, this is a very annoying bug

@Z_B-B, thank you for taking the time to respond to my cry for help. However, the link you supplied does not address the problem: I am not trying to export from Final Cut Pro to QuickTime, I am trying to export from QuickTime to the rest of the world (like people's iPhones and Ipads) in .m4v format (so I am not emailing my freinds such huge files).
If I were to spend hundreds of Dollars on a copy of Final Pro I could export directly from there and not have to bother with QuickTime, but I do not take enough video clips to justify the cost. I must say that I never had any of these problems before I decided to switch from Snow Leopard to Mountai Lion.

  • Captivate 4 not Zipping Published content if SCORM options turned on!

I am having a HUGH issue... Captivate 4 is not Zipping published files if the SCORM options are turned on... I've been using captivate for years, it's not rookie mistake.
When you enable the scorm options and publish it doesn't zip the published content. If you disable SCORM it zips them just fine.
PLEAS HELP SOMEONE!!!! Adobe support is not help at all... one actually told me to return the product.

If that's the only issue, why not just zip the resulting content yourself? Both Mac and Windows offer built-in methods for creating .zip files...
    IS that the only issue?
Does your lesson have scored interactions?
    You've setup the preferences/tracking correctly?
.zip is checked in the publish options? And it just doesn't .zip?

  • Published .avi from Captivate is shorter in Adobe Media Encoder

I published 8 slides from Captivate 4 to .avi video format.  When I play the .avi in Windows Media Player, it works great.  I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to convert it to .flv file to use in my Flash project.  When I import the .avi to AME, it's shorter and the audio on the last slide is cut off.  I tried inserting a duplicate slide with silent audio in Captivate to extend the duration by 10 seconds.  Still, the .avi is 2:57 in length and when I import it to AME it's 2:47.  It makes no difference if I extend the last silent slide to even 25 seconds.
Is this an issue with AME or with Captivate 4?  How do I fix it?
    Thank you!

Here's the info I can provide at this time:
Yes, it seems that this only affects .avi files published from Captivate.  Other .avi files reflect the correct length when imported to AME.
    Using AME CS4 4.2.0.006.
    Using Captivate CS4 4.0.0.1596.
Yes, it happens with every .avi file published from Captivate.  I've tried the following and still the last slide (#8) was cut off at the end including its audio:
extended last slide (#8) for more than a minute after the audio stops
extended the audio on the last slide (#8) by inserting silence for additional 30 seconds
added another slide (#9) after the last slide
added another slide (#9) after the last slide with 30 seconds of silent audio
I did find a temporary solution, however.  I added a transparent object (rectangle) a few seconds after the audio ended on slide 8 and when I published to .avi, Captivate recognized the added object and published the video to include the added animation.
You may download a zipped file containing the Captivate project and the published .avi from here:

    Thank you,
    Artur

  • Captivate 4 not exporting to Flash CS4 correctly

When I export from Captivate 4 to Flash CS4 it doesn't place the imported objects on their own timeline. Instead, it places each object into a movie symbol, which has its own timeline. The problem is that when I save it as a .swf in Flash and then I open it in After Effects none of the highlight boxes are visible.
As you know, After Effects does not see Flash symbols that are buried below the main timeline.
I opened up a project I worked on a year ago (with a different computer) and the Flash files had the exported Captivate items on the main timeline with the object on its own layer. Those files work fine in After Effects.
Can anyone tell me if they are having the same export issue with Captivate 4 not exporting its elements in Flash on the main timeline (as seen in the help file: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Captivate/4.0/Using/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d119e9582981-7fff. html)?
    Thanks!

I found the solution here (http://labnol.blogspot.com/2004/09/export-captivate-movie-to-macromedia.html). I'll reprint the steps here:
    1. Close Flash CS4 if it is open.
    2. Open Windows Explorer.
    3. Navigate to:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Captivate
    4. Copy the RDMFISTUB.dll file.
    5. Navigate to:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash CS4\en\Configuration
Note: The 'Local Settings' folder by default is hidden. If you are unable to locate the 'Local Settings' folder you can unhide it by opening Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options > View, and select the option to 'Show hidden files and folders'.
    6. Create a new folder called Importers. Your final path should look like this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\Configuration\Importers
    7. Paste the RDMFISTUB.dll into the Importers folder.
    8. Open Flash CS4.
    9. Create a New Flash Document. Save the document (or Flash may freeze when importing)
    10. Select File > Import > Import to Stage.
    11. Browse to and select the CP file.
    12. Click OK.
Here is a comparison picture of the results. Without the steps above the imported Captivate assets will reside inside of a movie symbol (one for each slide). This is labeled "incorrect" in the image. I want each asset on a new layer in the root timeline. This is labeled "correct" in the image.
I want to go from Captivate to Flash to After Effects (because Captivate generated Flash files are unreadable in After Effects). For full disclosure, I used Captivate 3 in the steps above, but I hope this is a solution for Captivate 4 as well (I decided to stick with Captivate 3 because it worked in a project I used a year ago).

Sorry if i wasn't more clear but was that response needed? No it wasn't needed, but I'm not the one asking for help so I have the luxury of not worrying too much about it. It's extremely frustrating trying to drag relevant information out of someone, and makes one less inclined to bother.
Anyways, there's still nothing in this thread that actually explicitly says "there is a file called VolcanoApp.java in the directory where I'm running javac from" and I really can't be bothered banging my head against the wall any longer. You've made a silly mistake, or a false assumption. We all do it from time to time. My advice is, take a break, go for a walk and re-visit this in a while. You'll probably spot the mistake right away.

  • Can't export to avi

I have a Captivate 4 session that I need to export to avi in order to edit it with other video in Adobe Premiere Pro, but in Captivate, I go to File > Publish and choose the avi setting, and it starts exporting for about a minute until the memory usage peaks out and I get the message "Runtime error 217." My RAM is 2 GB. Any suggestions?

    Hi there
When publishing to AVI, you should have a choice of several CODECs. Perhaps try publishing using a different CODEC?

  • Can not export to flash

I would like to export a captivate project to flash, but the
options under the edit button are grey (can not select
    them).

Generally, the grayed out selections means you either do not
have Flash on that PC, or you have an incompatible version. You
didn't say what version of Captivate you are running, so the below
    might help:
Captivate 3 designed compatible with Flash 8 > Flash CS3
Captivate 2 designed compatible with Flash 8
Captivate 1 designed compatible with Flash 2004 MX
It has been a while, so it is possible I am wrong about the
above. If I am, can someone please correct the versions listed.
    Thanks.
When Captivate is installed, it looks for the compatible
Flash. Sometimes if you install Flash
after Captivate, it might not get registered, in which case,
try reinstalling Captivate using the *Repair* option on the
    installer.
    Hope this helps, www.
    Larry
P.S. Just caught a single word in your post - you said the
    options under the Edit button.
What Edit button? Captivate's Export to Flash is on the File
menu. Maybe we are not talking about the same thing at all?? Is it
possible you mean you want to
publish to the Flash SWF format and something is grayed out
there? Guess we need a little more clarity onthe problem...

  • FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!

I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
    Wade

    Hi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there.

  • Table not exporting in XLS or PDF format

    Hi all
My Report layout contains a chart and a big table which loads properly in Interactive mode but does not export table into PDF or XLS format.Charts get exported properly.
the version :Oracle BI Publisher 11.1.1.3.0
Can somebody help why it is not exporting.
    Cheers
    -Sandeep

I exported by giving local path. But it doesnt write to that folder but to somewhere. Reports 10g is not client/server, so you cannot write directly to a local directory on the client PC. One option: you can open the generated file in a browser and have the users save it on their own PC.
When integrating Forms and Reports, there are other options, like using webutil_file_transfer.
It's a good idea to start with understanding the differences between client/server (6i) and 10g (web) Reports.

It's very inconsistent, as sometimes it will load a certain asset but after refreshing it won't show up anymore. The only one that has consistently not worked is the water animation at the bottom of the page, but, as I mentioned, it was working perfectly just a few days ago with no change. I was just about ready to publish this before it happened, so the timing couldn't be worse. Any help is greatly appreciated!
