Captivate 4 published SWFs won't play suddenly

Hello, I have been happily making Captivate 4 training, using a template. The published SWry mF movies have been playing just fine... on my PC and several others.
But today went to show off my work to the boss... who HAS successfully played previous Captivates I've made, and they won't play.
Double-clicking the HTM, or trying to open the SWF from the browser just shows a blank white screen that does nothing.  What would cause a published SWF, etc., to suddenly not play on selected machines... the owner doesn't remember chanigng anything...
And, what would be my trouble-shooting sequence to try and fix this problem?
Thank you very much

Hi there
Same dog, different leg action. In other words, what you linked to is a red herring.
What I mean by that is the article you linked to is referring to an inability to preview from Captivate 3. You are talking about Captivate 4 and the issue doesn't seem to manifest until after you publish, right?
Sure, Flash Player 10 may appear to be the common link at the moment, but we don't know for sure. With Captivate 3, the issue was only with preview. The output worked just fine. So the issue there is with an internal mechanism in Captivate as you work to create your content. What you are seeing now is certainly related to the internals of Captivate, but 4 is a new beast. It would seem that 4 has maybe introduced something causing this for you.
There may have been a few other posts related to this phenomenon. But they are very few and far between. Given the widespread use of the Flash Player, if it were solely an issue with the Player, I might expect we would have seen loads of reports. But we haven't.
I'll be very interested to see what you discover. Out of curiousity, I'm guessing you have attempted different combinations of settings? AS2 VS AS3, externalizing items, etc.?
Cheers... Rick

  • .swf won't play - blank screen

    Hello,
I had my flash designer take a 16MB .mpg file and convert it
    to a 2MB .swf
    file.
I created a "blank" .hmtl page and dropped in the .swf -
    which shows up as
the white box on this page:
    http://emerge-solutions.com/pland
(this link will forward you to the page.)
After I got a blank screen, I uploaded the .flv (2MB) and the
    .fla (14MB)
files to the server as well (same folder as the .html file)
    but that didn't
    help - same blank screen.
Can anyone help me understand why this .swf won't play?
    Thank you in advance!

    It plays fine for me.
Tested in Chrome, IE7, and FF3

  • Updated SWF won't play in browser anymore

I recently made a word change, that's all, to my fla file and exported the updated swf file. It plays in preview just fine, as well as when typing in the direct url - www.bicesandiego.com/about.swf but won't play on its own after I uploaded to the server.
I am not a programmer and received these files from the client, but I have made changes to this very file before and it worked fine. Now, it will not show when I go to the about page. Any thoughts?

If the main file loads the about file, it may have a mask that needs to be extended.  But since you say you only changed a word, as opposed to adding a number of them, I don't see what that would have done to change anything.  So you must have changed something else in the process of whatever you were doing.

  • My Flash SWF file inside of my Flash Catalyst SWF won't play when previewed in Dreamweaver?

However, when I preview the flash catalyst swf file, the flash swf thats inside, plays just fine. any suggestions or solutions?

Does the one swf load the other swf?  If so, is the one swf in the same folder as the html file that embeds it?

  • Swf won't play in captivate

    Hello all,
I am trying to import a swf file I made with Crystal
Xcelsius. When i open the swf in any program (flash player, flash
8, ppt, etc) it works fine.
When i import it into captivate 2 I can see it properly in
the placeholder but when I preview or publish it doesn't work. I
have tried turning the compression on/off and all flash 6-8.
    nothing works.
I have uploaded a tiny swf copy to see if anyone can help me.
    It can be found here.

    any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

    quote:
Larry, could you elaborate a little more on the AS issue. I
think you right and this is my problems lie (these ones any way).
Where can I access the AS to play around with it? (PS, I've tried
    it in C1,C2, C3(beta))
Understand that to export Captivate 2 project files
(*.CP) to Flash, you must have Flash 8 loaded on your machine. That
said, in the same sense that you can choose to publish a Flash
project in a variety of specific versions (Flash ver 6, ver 7,
etc), you can also choose to publish it to conform to a specific
version of Action Script. For instance, in Flash 8 the default AS
is 2.0, but Captivate version 1.1 only supports AS 1, so you can go
to the "File > Publish settings ..." and on the Flash Tab,
    select AS 1.
    Hope this helps Mike ~
    Later
EDIT: I reread my reply above and realized I hadn't really
answered your actual question, to wit, "
where can I access the AS ...". The answer is, export the
Captivate project to Flash, or (same thing a different way ...)
open Flash 8 and create a "New (Flash) Document", then use File
    > Import > ... to Stage (or Library). This will open the
Captivate project in the Flash 8 environment. Then to set a
different AS, use the Publish options I mentioned earlier.
**TO ALL: Some Flash geeks treat Captivate as a "add-on" to
Flash, and recommend doing things in Flash that only lead to
problems for the un-Flash person who reads their comments. Be
careful!!! Opening your Captivate project in Flash, or attempting
to edit it in Flash can lead to clinical depression and
tremendously high psychiatric consultation costs UNLESS you are a
    Flash geekster. Thanks for listening...

  • .swf won't play when published, but will in DW

I had posted this a few days ago, any help would be greatful, thanks so much.
first off, I have looked just  about everywhere else to find this problem and no other solutions have  worked yet.
    here's  the problem
    I have 4 pages
3 are made from templates and  one isn't
on the template ones, I have a .swf and when I publish  it, it plays.
on the non-template homepage, I have a .swf file and  when it is published, it doesn't load at all.
    I have tried many things.
    -  build a new .swf and place it in there
    - rebuild the homepage
    -  make the homepage into a template and then put the flash in
    - and  probably some other things
the file name is correct, the source name is  correct ( /folder_name/file_name.fla)
it is correctly in  dreamweaver and when I preview everything works.
any help  would be greatly appreciated...I really don't want to start over from  the beginning just to see if it works.

    thanks so much,

    Hi
All your file references are to your local hard drive, change these to reflect your site structure.

  • Flash SWF won't play in captovate

    Hi all,
I've created a simple flash file in Flash CS3 and published
the SWF and HTML. The SWF and HTML both play fine.
Now I want to insert this into a Captivate file. I have tried
    two methods:
Insert Animation into a blank slide
    Insert an Animation slide
Both appear to work file to the extent that I can see the
animation in the CP file. However, if I do a preview or publish of
the cp file, the animation isn't playing. What have I missed? Both
the original flash file and the CP file are set to 30fps.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers
    Mike

    Hi Mike
What exactly does your Flash file do? I've seen reports that
some Flash files don't much like being inside of Captivate and
refuse to work properly. But of those, some were referring to
outside resources and others had some "interesting" interactive
    effects going on.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Adobe Captivate 5 - Video won't play in web browser

I've tried inserting it as a slide video and as a FLV file. Plays fine in the preview, but not after publication and pulling it up on website. In one version the skin is there, but inactive. In others, there's just nothing there. The progress bar continues to move (on the presentation skin), but no vid plays. I've tried IE, Firefox and Chrome without success. Vid files aren't that big (14 and 21 KB, respectively). I've tried compressing when I publish, to no avail. I'm not yet an expert here and don't know what else to try. If you've got an idea, I'll try it. Thanks.

    Hi there
    Stoopid question time.
You *DID* know that you need to copy the FLV to the same server location as the SWF, right? (Sometimes folks think the video is included and all wrapped up inside the SWF)
Assuming the video is there, have you tried linking directly to the video? It could be you need to have a friendly chat with your web admin peeps and have them add the FLV files to their list of MIME types in order to properly serve them.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Captivate published Swf to open an external PDF file

    Hi all,
I need help to open an external PDF file from the swf file.
I used this previously. But realised that I can only open the pdf file from the published html file but not the swf file.
    function onClick() {
    window.open("mypdf.pdf");
    onClick();
Can anyone tell me what is wrong as i am not very good with javascript.
    Thanks.

Lilybiri is correct that you should be able to use the Open URL or File action.
But I also just tested your JS code on my own PC here in Captivate (triggered by a button set to Execute Javascript) and it worked fine.
If you are testing this locally on your PC hard drive, have you made sure that the publish folder location is set up as a trusted location in your Flash Global Security settings?  It might not be working for that reason.
You can also try uploading your SWF and PDF file to a web server and testing from there.  Flash Global Security doesn't tend to bother content from a web server.

  • .swf won't play from webserver

Someone hijacked my last post, so here it is again.
    http://www.milkmoonkids.com
There is a brown square that has a .swf loaded into it. It
plays locally, but not when I upload it to my webserver. Any idea
what is going on? I appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Rich

Of course without seeing and testing the page, it's impossible to tell for sure whats wrong. Can you post a link to the actual page.
That being said, my first guess is that it's being published with something like this in the <object> code:
    swfversion 11.0.0.0
... meaning that some version of Flash player 11 is required to play the .swf. For viewers with that version installed it works, for those without, it doesn't.This has been a real common problem when "Publish" sticks that version 11 requirement in the code.
So open the HTML page. find that part of the <object> code and edit the code to read swfversion 10 instead.
Use DreamWeaver or NotePad or whatever to edit... but without seeing the page, that's my best guess.
    Best wishes,

  • SWF Won't PLAY!!!!

I'm fed up at this point.  I have inserted a SWF that I created using e-Learning Brothers Flash interaction.  The SWF plays fine outside of Captivate, but when I insert it into a slide, it does not play.  However, if I go past the slide and then click the rewind, the interaction plays as expected.  What am I doing wrong?

Your object tag (which I.E uses) is for embedding Director
    content, not
    Flash:
    <object
    classid="clsid:166B1BCA-3F9C-11CF-8075-444553540000"
    codebase="

    version=8,5,0,0" width="200" height="100">

  • SWF Won't Play Locally or In Browser

I put an .swf file on the home page of my site. When I try to play it locally (preview in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome) I am in given this message.
When I try to view it online on any of 3 previous browsers I simply get a blank screen. On IE it attempts to download a later version of Flash but nothing happens.
I'm guessing something is wrong with the .swf they are referencing but is was provided to me by Flash along with the actual .swf I exported. I imagine it will actually be necessary for the viewer of my site who doesn't have Flash. Any thoughts?

This appears to be a Dreamweaver problem. I never, ever, use Dreamweaver, and so I'm not the best person to parse out a problem. I tried the same thing that you did with an .swf of my own and I got the same error message.
It seems that the problem is with the default html that Dreamweaver writes when you embed a Flash file. There is a line:
    <param name="swfversion" value="17.0.0.0" />
The number "17" is the problem. You need to change that to the number of the Flash player that you are designing for in Flash. If you've left Flash's Publish settings at their defaults, then you are designing for Flash Player 11. So you need to change that number 17 to 11 in the html.
To find the Flash Player value that Flash is using, go to the File menu and select Publish Settings. A new window will open. In the upper left is an option labeled: Target. This is the player version that Flash is using.

  • Help with inserting a Captivate published SWF output into another master Captivate project

Can I insert a SWF (which is a Try It created and published using Captivate) into a master Captivate project such that the master Captivate project can access variables in the Try-It and do stuff depending on the value? (I'm using Captivate 6)

    Hi Lilybiri,
The things is that for the Try-It, I'd like to use the playbar but for the main project that houses the SWF, I don't want to have a playbar. If i insert the Try It as slides in the main project (instead of insert a SWF), the the playbar becomes global to the whole project.
Also, I would have a lot ot slides in the main project file since there are going to be at least 7-8 Try Its, which if inserted as SWFs sound management but if I insert the slides for each of them, my main project will have way too many slides.
    Advice?

  • Swf won't play after uploading - white box

I've posted a couple of previous times and gotten nothing but
dead air, so I'm still trying to find a way to get flash movies to
just play on a web site. Is it that hard? I hate flash. Why doesn't
    it just work?
I'm trying to put a video gallery up and currently have eight
.swf video clips that all begin downloading simultaneously when the
page is opened, hogging bandwidth that should be reserved for
whatever one video the user chooses. I can't find a way to keep the
clips from downloading until the user clicks the play button. And I
can't put a buffer delay in. Everything I can find on a buffer in
Flash says to change the BufferTimer in the components inspector.
But I HAVE NO BUFFERTIMER IN THE COMPONENTS INSPECTOR!! I've got
Align, AutoPlay, CuePoints, etc., but no BufferTimer! I swear I
must have a faulty version of Flash CS3.
So I'm trying to get around it by using a gallery of images
that link to individual pages with one .swf file. It all tests fine
on my local machine, but once it's uploaded, the gallery images
pull up pages with a big fat white box where the .swf should be.
    What gives?
And while I'm ranting about the difficulties of Flash, I'll
rave about the ease of use of Dreamweaver. Why can't Fl be more
like Dw? ie, coding not required. I've been trying to wrestle this
Flash gallery into reality for more than a week and I'm on the
verge of reverting back to embedded Quicktime files.
BTW, does anyone know of a Flash forum people actually? I
haven't gotten a response at Creative Cow or here.
Sorry for the rant; I'm at my wit's end.

I am having the very same problem. When I post the swf file
and call it up, all I see is a white box with my play button and
stop button at the bottom. Both of these buttons work and it looks
fine once you hit the play button. But I want the swf to come up to
the first frame which should be a picture of a person -- not the
    white box!
Did you ever find out how to fix this problem? I'd be ever so
grateful to get help on this one.
    Thanks!
