Captivate 5.5 SLOW Saves

FORUM POST
Original project in Captivate 5 is 56.9 MB
Save time: 18 to 30 seconds (depending on number of windows and other activity on system)
Saved file size in Captivate 5.5 is 49.6 MB (opened CPT v5 file and "saved as" CPTX v5.5)
Save time: 8 minutes only running Captivate and Adobe Bridge!
System Specs:
eLearning Suite 2.5 (installed 6-22-11)
Win7 (64bit) SP1
Intel Core i5 M 560 2.67 GHz (133 MHz Bus)
4.00 GB RAM
ATI FirePro M5800 (1 GB RAM, DDR3), PCI Express 2.0
174 GB available disk space
Have completed two "save as" operations with no improvement in speed. Have updated all hardware and software.
In Captivate 5.5, it takes less than 10 seconds for the first steps of the save. At 50% complete, the "Compressing file…" message appears:
Total save time was 10 minutes (the "Not Responding" message is a Win7 misnomer while the program is working on the save/compression). The % complete never changes; when the save is complete, the pop-up window goes away.
Any suggestions? Any help? TIA

Michael,
I'm having similar issues, but I am on XP. Is this a feature within Captivate or in the Control Panel?

  • Microsoft word 2008 slow save with iMac 2009 and yosemite

I have microsoft word running on 4 different iMacs, all using Yosemite.  My 2008 iMac 2009 iMac  and 2014 retina display iMac all save word docs quickly.  My 2011 iMac saves word docx and word doc documents slowly.   All machines are basically the same.  Memory is not the issue.  I am running same updated version of word 2008 in same configuration.  I reinstalled word on 2011 slow save iMac to no avail.  problem started after upgraded to yosemite.  i have 12 gigs of ram as i thought ram was issue.  Any thoughts welcome. Are others noticing same problem?

There has been a better and free alternative to old versions of MS Word and MS Office since forever. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is the latest version of a free and complete All-In-One document processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation, database, & formula software, found here: http://www.openoffice.org
It also reads, writes and translates MS Word, saves in many formats, and is pretty easy to use. It's entirely modern and compatible with all the latest Mac operating systems. Good luck.

  • A fatal error has occurred and the application is being terminated. Adobe Captivate has tried to save all your work in the respective project folders as ".cpbackup" files.   Please restart Adobe Captivate.

I was trying to capture a simulation when a pop-up window came with this error:
"A fatal error has occurred and the application is being terminated. Adobe Captivate has tried to save all your work in the respective project folders as ".cpbackup" files. Please restart Adobe Captivate."
I tried every possible solution but i am getting the same error. Even now, i am not able to open a blank project. I cleared Preferences and Cache, Restarted the system, uninstalled and re-installed captivate but the error occurs.
    Please help.

Having admin rights is not the same as 'Run Captivate as administrator'. For the last, right-click on the start icon for Captivate and check 'Run as administrator'. Or click on Advanced, where you can check the option to always run as administrator.
Another possibility could be a corrupt font somewhere. I forgot to ask which version you are using (exact number).

  • Very slow saves

RoboHTML X5.0.2: Saves used to be quick, but after Windows
SP2 upgrade, they take a very long time and eat up 100% of CPU.
Anyone know what to do about this?

    Welcome to the forum.
I wouldn't be worried about the amount of CPU time. I think
my first approach to dealing with the slow saves would be an
    uninstall and reinstall of RH.
Don't forget it must be done using your logon with full admin
rights. There's a topic on my site if you need more information.

  • Photoshop CS5 slow Save for Web (Win 7, 64 bit)

    Hi.
I have problem with save for web in PS CS5 (12.0.1). It is extremely slow. For example selecting anything from menus takes couple of seconds. I deleted PS preferences files but that didn't help.
Any suggestions how to fix this?
    Thanks.
    My system is Win7 x64, Intel i7 930, 8gb RAM.

Nothing should be slow on a machine like yours.
    Some possible suspects:
Make sure you have updated your video drivers from the web site of the maker of your video card.
Check what other software you have running on your computer.  How many processes are running?  Have you installed tons of "handy" stuff?  All that takes resources.
See if you are having system errors by looking in the Windows System Event Log.

  • Very Slow Save for Web in CS3 Mac

I have Photoshop CS3 Extended 10.0.1 running on a 2.16GHz Intel MacBook running 10.4.11 with 2Gb of installed RAM and around 30% free hard disk space.
Regardless of file size or dimension, Save For Web is painfully slow to load and to save out. Optimized previews update quick enough when settings are changed, but everything else about Save For Web feels like wading in treacle.
Anyone else got this problem? It would be good just to know that I'm not the only one with this issue!
    Any ideas for fixes?

    >My hatred of laptops has NOTHING to do with Photoshop
And my commentary had nothing to do with your hatred. The OP is all about Photoshop usage on laptops, and I am quite experienced using PS on laptops. When I said
    >Note that older laptops like Ramón mentioned would not run PS...
I was just discussing the OP.
For the record I am not a proponent of using laptops or even the stronger iMacs as desktop tower replacements for heavy graphics users. I have consistently recommended in favor of towers and long life cycles and I will continue to do so.
However for the last six months or so I have frequently been using a C2D Macbook Pro as a desktop replacement and I can report unequivocally that it works, especially power-wise, which is what the OP was about. Also based on that experience and also unequivocally I consider using MBPs or the similarly limited iMacs for production graphics work inadvisable.
Strong laptops are incredible machines. They open mobile computing usages that can be of great benefit to many folks, enough benefits that I for one will always have a laptop as one of my computers. The ability to literally do any computing task (except volume graphics production) anywhere is pretty spectacular.
Photo capture, edits and presentation in the field is of huge benefit. Even with something as mundane as this forum communication the ability to do it sitting in the living room instead of sequestered in an office is IMO a good thing.

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

  • A plea to Apple please fix slow finder, slow "save-as" options, slow address search in mail

Like many I am adding my voice to those whose finder has slowed to a crawl, it takes many seconds for it to "see" a folder.
I found one fix to the above at http://osxdaily.com/2013/11/13/fix-finder-slow-high-cpu-use-mac-os-x/which basically resets the com.apple.finder.plist file.  Thanks to the user who posted this.
And the "save-as" function that is also very slow.  I have seen some work-arounds but I am not comfortable messing around in Terminal and would probably forget to get rid of a turn-around when an OSX update comes.  So apple please solve this.
The mail problem is similar.  It is now quicker to drag an e-mail address from contacts into mail than typing in a name!  Apple please fix.
None of these problems were there with Mountain Lion and judging from the hundreds of posts out there, it seems it can only be a Maverick issue.
    Thank you.

    Charles Gloor wrote:
I am in OSX Mavericks discussions so not sure where you get the "Which iPad" item from.
I surmise it was from the link you provided.
Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
If you are interested in solving your problems more information is required. Start by ruling out hardware defects, including an impending disk failure that would cause the symptoms you described. Back up your system if you have not already done so.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting, assuming you are interested in doing that.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Captivate 5 too slow, can I still purchase Captivate 4?

I've found Captivate 5 incredibly and unworkably slow, both on my home PC (E8400 Core 2 Duo, 6GB RAM) and on my work PC (same CPU, 2GB RAM).
It's much slower than Captivate 4 and as I'm working to very tight deadlines, Captivate 5 just won't do.
Can I still purchase Captivate 4 from somewhere.  Really, what I'm looking for is a download purchase since I could really do with having it today rather than buying the disc online and having to wait for it to be delivered (I've used up all 30 days of my Captivate 4  trial and Captivate 5 is just terrible).
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Cheers,
    ROC

I too am running Captivate 5 on a Windows 7 64 bit box. For me, sometimes it's slow and other times it's faster. Personally, I haven't noticed it being faster to use than Captivate 4. In many cases it does seem slower. There are periods where it like "goes to sleep" and after waiting for a while it wakes back up. When it fails to wake up, I kill the process and start Captivate life fresh and it's usually okay for a while.

  • Very slow save time in RH6

    Please help!
Recently my company upgraded us from RH3 to RH6 and I was
placed in charge of converting all of our RH3 projects over to RH6.
Following all the directions and instructions that I could find, I
was able to successfully transfer over 5 of the 6 RoboHelp HTML
project files without a glitch, it's the final project and the
largest of them all that is giving me headaches.
RH6 was installed on a new Windows XP Professional SP2 system
with a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 75GB harddrive, 2.98 GB
of RAM and 2 GB of Virtual Memory, we are also running on Microsoft
Office 2000. My main project file is 223MB in size and contains
1395 topics, countless bookmarks, and 10 conditional build tags.
Previously on RH3, this manual would normally take 20-30 minutes to
load, about 15-30 seconds to refresh while saving changes made when
working, and about 40-50 minutes to publish, and that was on a much
older and slower CPU system with about 1/8 the memory and speed.
Now, on this newer system, and with the newer version of RH, it is
taking on average of 2-4 hours to load, 2-4 minutes between saves,
and ironically onlyl about 20-30 minutes to publish?
I have tried numerous fixes that were listed out in the
forums, I have read through the Snippets posted on Peter Grainges
site, and uploaded the patches through Adobe (which got rid of the
windows error message we were initially encountering while
publishing). I have both renamed and deleted the .cpd and .xpj
files, I have even went as far as creating an entirely new project
from scratch and importing the individual HTML documents from the
old file and nothing is working?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Quoting from an earlier post:
    =======================================
It is currently on my local drive, although we previously ran
the project in version 3 off of my companies network drive and it
ran pretty much flawlessly, with an occasional hiccup when the
network went down with publishing error messages and login errors.
    =======================================
Your topics may be have a lot of extraneous code, possibly in
    meta statements.
In a couple of old projects that migrated from X3 I found
some stuff like this in X5 or RH 6, I forget when it happened:
    <meta name="build tags"
    content="dontprintnow,dontprintnow,Exclude,dontprintnow,Exclude,dontprintnow,Exclude,dont printnow,Exclude,
    dontprintnow,Exclude,dontprintnow,Exclude,dontprintnow,Exclude,dontprintnow,Exclude,dontpr intnow,
    Exclude,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dont printnow,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow ,
    dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontprintnow,dontp
    and on and on.
I fact, I just found the above example by searching some old
projects. "Exclude" and "dontprintnow" were tags I had used at the
    topic level..
The current cpd file, like its predecessors in earlier
releases, keeps track of this, too. So every time you get such
garbage in a topic, it gets stuffed into the cpd when you close the
project. Imagine how long that must take, especially given the
limitations of MS Access database table fields.
I don't know how the repetitions came about. It may have been
during a crash, but by the time I discovered this garbage it was
too late to trace it back. You wrote that you experienced some
    hiccups, too.
As you had as many as 10 build tags, some of this junk may
still lurk in topics, despite your attempt to delete tags at the
    project level.

  • Interactions in Captivate 7 don't save

When I build an interaction in Adobe Captivate 7 it remains there while I am in the file, but once I save and close the interaction defaults back to the original information.  How can I save this and go back for editing long term?

I am in the current versions 7.0.1.237.
When filling in the fields for Jeopardy for instance, I fill out all of the questions.  Currently I have been doing one tab at a time because it has not been consistently saving.  THe first tab was fine, I saved, closed and reopened with no issue.  The next tab, same thing.  Third -Fifth tabs, saved, it cleared all responses out.  I have redone these tabs multiple times like I did the first two but they won't keep.  This happened with tabs one and two when I first started also.  Do I have to close the file after saving to prevent it clearing?  Something is clearly not right.

  • Adobe Captivate Outputting/Rendering Slow, Sluggish, and Choppy Video when ScreenCasting

When I screencast my desktop and then output/render the video that Adobe Captivate recorded, the video is always so choppy, sluggish, and slow.
I set the frames per second to 80 and interval to 1, 5, and 10, and still choppy video.
My system specfications are as follows:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
    CPU: Intel Core i7 @ 3.40 GHz | Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
    RAM: 16.0 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6600 Series
Is there something that I am doing wrong during/after I record?
    Any help would be awesome!
    Thank you!

    Hey Anjaneai,
I mean slow as in my Cursor movements are not as smooth as I expected with this software.
I have chosen the Video Demo recording mode.
I did check the option to show "Actions in Real Time" from Recording and it only applies to Audio. I am speaking of video. I have tried comparing. I tried comparing with Software Demo, but it's impossible to compare, seeing as Adobe Captivate generates the mouse for you.
I thought that the higher the Frame Rates the smoother the experience.
    Thank you!

  • Captivate 6 Quiz Slow and Freezing

    Hi,
I'm trying to finalise my project, and I'm running into nothing but problems. The biggest problem that I'm having right now is with the quiz freezing at the end of each project. It's always in a different place each time, and when it's not freezing, it's ridiculously slow (it took a user 5 minutes to answer 3 questions earlier today).
The original format had the quiz in a project divided up by unit (3 units in a project = 3 quizzes). I tried to create the advanced interactions that are necessary to make individual score slides, but I'm brand new to Captivate, and I didn't know what to do with the advanced actions once I made them (and the project kept freezing, so I gave up)! Exchanging my pedagogic ideal for one of convenience, I put the quizzes at the end of the entire project, with an intermediate score slide between each section, showing the user their cumulative total and offering them the chance to review the previous questions. However, I was still experiencing the freezing issue. I deleted the intermediate score slides and reinstated the regular quiz score slide, and now the quiz won't load at all! All the other slides in the project load just fine, so I know it's just the quiz (and it's the same for each of the projects I'm working on).
    So far, I have
Unchecked the box for "report score" - we don't need to know how well the user did; it's for their own information.
    Cleared the cache.
Copied and pasted the slides and started the quizzes from scratch. Twice.
This has to be either a Captivate issue, or a me issue. I really hope it's me.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    CCM

It is very difficult to post a screenshot of it because it is barely visible, they forgot to change the color of the Pausing symbol on the Slide. Look closely to the timeline of the Quiz slide. Right in the middle you should see a vertical double bar (like it appears for a button, where it is better visible) but it is black on dark blue (when question slide is selected, which makes it difficult to see. Place the cursor over that double bar (Pause) and it will change in a double arrow which allows you to drag it more to the right, near to the end of the slide. There is no other way like for buttons, because Quiz slides have no Timing accordion. That pausing is used twice for quiz slides: when the user submits, the playhead will not move, when he enters Y or clicks on the slide the playhead will be released and the actions defined in the Action accordion will be executed. Default actions are Continue, which means that the playhead will move on, and has to wander through all the frames after the pausing point, which takes 1,5secs (inactive portion). If you move the pausing near to the end and/on shorten the duration of the slide if possible (not when you need to listen to an audio clip) that waiting time will be shorter, or, as you found out if you change Continue to Go to Next Slide there will be no waiting time at all.
It is not a good idea to remove the Next button if you want to offer Review, because the user will need it then and you cannot put it back during Review. However you can drag the Next button to the same place as the Clear button, it will will be covered until Review.
I explained those work flows in these posts, written for 5/5.5, but still valid for 6; have to write some posts about new Quiz features in 6 but time is a problem:

  • Adobe Captivate asks me to save my project file when I dont make changes...

    Hello,
I think it is confusing Adobe will ask if I want to save the file even if I don't make any changes... Maybe this is something they can change in the next version?
    Ryan

I have had this happen. It's odd. Some things seem to get saved, while others do not.  I haven't tracked it to be certain, but as I recall Bookmark changes or changes to File Properties, for example, won't be saved while working in the Content or Tags panel may be.  No idea why this is the case.
As mentioned above, it's always a good idea to make interim Save As's using a different file name (File01, File02, etc.) so if your document should become corrupt during the editing process you have an earlier version to go back to.
