Captivate 5: Shuffling Questions in a Quiz

Hi all,
I know it's possible to shuffle answers in a quiz, but is it possible to shuffle questions? I would like to shuffle my questions so that users are presented with quiz questions in random order.
Thanks!
Brittany

Hi Rod,
Never thought of using the Question Pool, but that's a great suggestion. I think that may do the trick!
Much appreciated!

  • How do I set up a Bonus question in a Quiz?

I have a 30-question multiple-choice quiz that is graded, and would like to add a "bonus" question at the end-- so that if the user answers correctly they get extra points, but if they don't answer or answer incorrectly there are no consequences (and the final score is still out of 30 questions).
    Is that possible to do?
    Using Captivate 7.
    Thanks!

Do I understand this correctly: final score can be either the result of the 30MCQ slides or the sum of those slides + bonus question result? But the passing score remains the same?
You could use 'Branch aware' in the Quiz settings. The result is that all system quizzing variables will be related either to the 30 MCQ slides or to those+bonus question: total score obtained will be higher but also the total max. score, number of questions etc. Is this what you want?

  • Cap 5 - All questions included in quiz?!

    Hi All,
We have a 50 slide module with practice questions scattered throughout. At the end we have a 10 question assessment. I've noted that cap 5 includes ALL questions in the 'quiz results' screen - even the practice questions.
To resolve I had to hide the number of questions - which worked to a point UNTIL... if the user fails the assessment they have to click the retake quiz button and this directs them way back to the very first practice question in the module which is definately not what we want - I want it to go back to the first assessment question. Captivate used to have an option - for questions 'include in quiz'. Has this option been removed - I can see it for buttons but not for questions...
This is a fairly significant problem for us.

For your practice questions, on the Quiz Properties tab, have you set General > points to 0, and on the Reporting accordion unticked the Report Answers box?
    Does that work?

  • Shuffling Questions won't work

    Hi there,
I'm using Presenter 7.0.6 and I have the following problem:
I have a group of questions (30 questions), and I choose 25 out of these 30 questions for a quiz.
    So far, so good.
But: I also chose: "Shuffle questions" in all the fields I found, but still each time I (and others) open this quiz, it's always the same 25 questions and always the same order.
So, they are not shuffled at all...
Also, the viewser.xml correctly shows shuffleQuestions="1"
    What am I doing wrong???
    Cheers,
    Blik

    Dear Shubhi,
thank you for your help. Since your solution resolves my problem, I take the liberty to post it here for other people who may have the same problem:

Captivate 5.5 Question: We seem to be having an issue with the screen capture piece not recording "everything".
We're running 5.5 as an administrator on Windows 7 and my co-worker is trying to capture a webinar (GoToMeeting) with Captivate and it is not recording anything in the GTM window, except the last slide. Anyone have this problem or know a fix? Not much is mentioned in the Adobe forums.

Captivate simply doesn't 'hear' some screen events on certain applications and you just need to resort to doing manual captures at these points.
I usually set up my manual capture button to be F2 so that I can hit it with my left hand while my right hand is on the mouse navigating through the task.

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/import-questions-gift-format-files.html

    Hi there,
Captivate 7 doesn't support tags during GIFT import. So you won’t be able to import Images, links etc. as part of GIFT Import.

  • ITunes Party Shuffle - Questions

I have read several discussion but have not found one exactly on point with regard to the following:
    1. If I choose any Smart List as my source for the shufle (say Hip Hop/Rap), it plays album in their exact orders. It does not shuffle b/w albums. Example: it will play just Beastie Boys.
    2. Sometimes when I pick a playlist as the shuffle source, I get the following error message "The playlist __________ does not contain any songs playable by Party Shuffle." Why? What does this mean?
    3. General, non-Party Shuffle question: why is it that in my Library some songs are checked (the box is checked), while other songs are not checked? What is the significance?
    Thanks everyone!
    IBM ThinkPad   Windows XP

    1. Check your shuffle settings to make sure you've got them enabled the way you like. Edit > Preferences > Playback You can shuffle by song, artist, or album.
    2. Are the songs on this playlist checked? They won't play if they're unchecked.
    3. If you want songs to play and be part of shuffle, etc. they need to be checked. ITunes ignores them when they're unchecked.

  • How do I remove a question from a quiz in Captivate 5?

I need to create a course that includes a 10 slide Quiz at its end, but which also includes question slides earlier on in the sequence that do not contribute to the Quiz Results.
    How do I do this?

Please be aware that although you may set the score of the earlier quiz questions to zero, Captivate will still regard them as belonging to the Quiz Scope.  This means that if you offer the learner the option to Review Quiz, this review will begin from the very first quiz question, even though it may be not scored.

  • Captivate 5.5 - Getting an accurate quiz result when user skips a question and returns to complete it?

    I have a Captivate 5.5 project with the following settings;
Questions are optional and interspersed in the content
    Backward movement is allowed
Quiz results show a percentage correct and are for the learners information only
    Issue:
When the user skips a question, views their results at the end of the project and then goes back to complete the skipped question, the quiz results do not add the skipped question to the previous total. Captivate appears to think that only the skipped question was completed. Any idea on how to fix this would be great. Thanks

I have been answering a similar question several times yesterday, here are two examples:
    Continue button - result page.
Help with conditional action in C8
Varun's proposal is the same as I suggested, but first I'd want to know if you also allow Review? The stack order of the embedded buttons on the Score slide is:
    bottom 'Continue'
    above this one 'Review'
    above 'Review' there is Retake
Often users hare confused by Review and Retake, and as you probably know, once the Review button has been clicked, the Retake option is over, user cannot take another attempt. This means that in most courses I will drag the Review button under the Retake button. Only when Quiz attempts are exhausted, the Review button will become available. But you cannot put the Continue button in the same location because it will never become visible. Have a workaround for that, you'll find it in the other threads. I'm missing one that I cannot find.

  • Captivate 8: Can I pull a report to tell me how learners responded to the individual questions in a quiz?

I need to know if the questions were answered correctly or incorrectly by each learner. Of those questions that were incorrectly answered, I need to know which incorrect option was chosen as the answer.

The LMS should show what the user chose as their answer when they complete a quiz. I am only really familiar with Joomla, but they do show what the user answered for each question. Is this not happening for you?

  • Is that possible to report score from a selected set of questions in a quiz?

Hi I am new to Captivate and SCORM. I've been reading the forum discussions and Lilybirl's blog, and learned a lot in the past few days. I wish someone could help me with this too:
We hope to design a course within a single captivate project which allows the following functions:
There are several pre-tests and one post-test. The scores from each pre-tests will be used for branching purpose. See, if one takes pre-test 1 and passes, then she will go to lecture 2; otherwise goes back to lecture 1;  if one takes pre-test 2 and then passes, then she will go to lecture 3; otherwise go back to lecture 2; same for pre-test 3, 4, 5, ....  Now I know that I can use a customized variable to realize this part. I can create a user varaible as pretest_score, and set it as 0 at the beginning of each pre-test; let it do the math everything the learner answers a question slide. Then at the end of each pre-test, jump based on the value of  the pretest_score. Then for the post-test, the pretest_score will be set as 0 again, and the culculation will start from 0. It will also generate a customized report page to report scores on each pre-test and also on the post-test.
However, we wish to be able to pass only the final score on the post-test to the LMS. Since I read that most of quiz variables are read only. Is there any way I can get around this? Is there something in the SCORM package that I can change to the variable that I created so that I can pass this variable's value to the LMS?
Any suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
I do not describe it in the blog posts, but you could also set the scores of the pretest question slides to 0, and track those scores only with a user variable and advanced actions. That way the total score will have only the scores of the final test, where you attach score to those question slides. Only one annoying thing: the total number of questions will have all the questions included, same with the number used in the progress indicator. You'll have to avoid showing those numbers to the user, but if you can live with that, could be easier than to create custom question slides.

  • Captivate or custom ActionScript to create Quiz?

I need to create a Quiz, and after testing out Captivate I've
determined it cannot handle the complexity. I'm thinking custom
ActionScript programming will be required, but since I really only
spent an hour trying out Captivate, I want to run this by some of
you advanced users and see if I'm overlooking something.
    Example:
Question: Which of the following are kinds of apples?
    a. McIntosh
    b. Gala
    c. Golden Delicious
    d. Orange
a, b and c are all correct, d is incorrect. It appears that
Captivate will allow me to set this up as a multiple choice quiz
with multiple answers, and that I can designate a, b and c as the
correct answer and d as incorrect. But it appears that it requires
that all three correct options are selected to branch to a "correct
answer" slide, and that any other combination will trigger an
    incorrect answer.
What I need is to be able to give the user feedback based on
several different combinations of answers. If they choose a and b
but not c, I need to be able to take them to SLide X, and if they
choose c but not a and b I need to take them to SLide Y, and if
they choose just a but also choose d I need to take them to Slide
    Z, and on and on.
My assumption upon evaluation is that this is beyond the
scope of what Captivate can provide. I feel it requires custom
programming. Does anyone know if there's something I'm missing?
Some feature I haven't thought of?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean McAuliffe

If you are using AS2, there are quiz templates in Flash that
you can use. But they are very limited as to the functionality. For
what you are looking to do (branching based on different user
inputs), you will not be able to use the bulit in Flash components.
To see what I mean, open Flash, and on that main start page where
you can choose the type of file to create, click on the "More..."
    folder and then Quiz.
Open one of those to see what I mean. There are a bunch of
components that are available to use. But there is the whole issue
of reporting it to the LMS, Captivate does all that stuff for you,
I'm not sure how to go about doing that in Flash without using the
built in quiz functions. But if you don't have to report to an LMS,
you can code it pretty easily.
If you need more clarification let me know!

  • Captivate 7 - Incorrect Answers not allowing quiz to Continue. Buttons not functioning correctly (Clear, Back, Next). I have Knowledge Check

I am experiencing a problem with the Quiz feature of Captivate 7. Correct answers are submitting o.k., but Incorrect answers are not. You cannot go forward with them, i.e., the program will not Continue or go to the next question with an Incorrect answer in the Assessment.
This presentation has 15 Knowledge Check questions (0 points) and 10 Assessment Questions (10 points each).
Also the buttons don't always work correctly, i.e. Clear, Next, Back.
    What could I try?

Thank you for your response. No. I didn't do anything like that. I figured that I should probably divide this into 2 parts and aggregate them. That was going to work, but  I checked with one of our other users in TX. He told me that what they always do is to divide up the presentations into 2 parts. They don't aggregate them, but instead, let the LMS take care of going from the learning module (with the Knowledge Check questions) to the Assessment Module. Once you exit from the learning module, you immediately go into the assessment.
Captivate 7 doesn't really allow for this type of test without aggregation or an LMS. You can have a pre-test, but it expects those questions to come at the beginning of the course, not to be interspersed throughout the course. I also found that using the Question Pools gave me more flexibility in moving Knowledge Check questions around using the Filmstrip.
The other interesting thing was that the TX expert told me to remove the Accessibility Feature because, apparently, it causes other parts of Captivate not to work. I found that to be strange.

  • Adobe Captivate 4 Answers not appearing on quiz slide

I have quiz slides in my project with single answer multiple choice questions.
Sometimes on my slides as they are playing the letters for the choices appear but the answers do not.
I hit the right button on my mouse and refresh the page and they appear.
Please let me know if there is something I can do to assure the answers appear all the time.
    Thank you,
    David Gambal

As far as I am aware, deleting or replacing the Question Title or Question Text captions in quiz questions in any version of Captivate will cause issues.  So don't do it.
You do not need to always choose Optional as your Preferences > Quiz Settings > Required setting.  But if you choose one of the other more restrictive options this drop down offers (Required, Pass Required, Answer All) then you may run into strange issues where your quiz seems to stall for no apparent reason, especially in situations where you try to Retake Quiz or move back and forth from quiz questions to content slides.  I recommend you start with Optional, and then once you have everything working perfectly, try the other settings if you really feel the need.  Personally, I never seem to use them.

  • Captivate 2.0 Questions/Problems

    Several problems/questions with Captivate 2.0
    1) When I insert any type of animation, I am unable to use
the menu options (File, Edit, View, etc). I have to close the
program and open the file again.
    2) When I import slides from PowerPoint, sometimes it will
only grab 1, 3, 7, 15, or all slides. It's hit or miss.
    3) Anyone know how I can add an 'Audio Replay' button? On
text heavy slides, I want students to be able to click on a button
    and replay the audio clip.
    4) Insert question slides 'back' button does not function
when the submit button is pressed.
    That's all for now.

    Hi there cegrubb
For the animation/menu bit, simply click to place focus on
any object in the library (Image or Animation or audio file). Once
focus is placed there, your menus should stabilize. (That is, until
you interact with another animation object, then you will have to
repeat this process. But it beats restarting the application.
Not sure what to tell you about the PP import issue. Can't
say I've ever seen it happen. I vaguely recall someone reporting
this issue here in the forums once or twice, but I'm not sure if
    any resolution was ever found.
For an "Audio Replay", I'm thinking you have audio on the
slide itself. So what you can do is to insert a really really short
slide just before the slide. Then point the button at this new
slide. Effectively, the button is clicked by the user, the slide is
displayed and progresses directly into the slide with the button.
Bottom line is that the audio replays as the slide is played over!
For the back button to work, you may need to examine the Quiz
    Manager and allow backward movement.
Hopefully one or two things here were actually helpful...
