Captivate 6: Can't publish to MP4

Hi everybody,
I need some help with publishing to MP4. Some information in advance: Captivate 6.0.0.199 (x64), Windows 7
I have added several video clips to a captivate project. When I publish to MP4, it seems to work: the Video Publisher pops up and does finish without an error message. But the resulting MP4 video has only about 40 kilobytes. The video itself seems to be valid, at least it can be opened with VLCplayer.  But the video only contains the rotating preload image and an error message in the middle of the screen saying "Conntection error" (or similar, since I translated it from the German version).
I tried many things:
- video resolution 1920x1080, 1280x720 and less, framerate 23,98
- input video FLV or MP4 (transcoded from MOV files with Adobe Media Encoder)
- started Captivate as Administrator
- manipulated the FLVs with the "FLV MetaData Injector"
- renamed the folder "Captivate 6" in "C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local" + restart
- put the video files into the same folder as the Captivate project file
- used different publishing templates (YouTube, Apple and so on)
- deactivated/activated the option "scalable HTML content"
- tested with only one video
... but always the same result: An MP4 file, just a few KB small, containing the error message "Connection error".
Thank you very much for any help
Marcel

We are having the same issue with version 6.1.0.319
.flv files play in captivate, but after publishing and running the .swf file, we get the connection error.
Have tried all of the fixes in these discussions, but still get the connection error.
renamed the folder "Captivate 6" in "C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local" + restart
disabled advanced project compression
disabled compress SWF file
Published to a local drive instead of a network drive
deleted and reloaded the video files
Everything worked just fine when we were running version 5.5, but now since upgrading to 6 (which we paid good money for) we are at a stall, and our e-learning projects have come to a complete halt.
For a very expensive piece of software, it sure seems to be buggy!
Any new ideas?

  • Captivate 4 can't publish or preview files/sound layers appear black

After re-installing Captivate 4, I was unable to preview or publish files.  Additionally, my sound layers appeared as black, empty layers.
I had a difficult time finding a solution, so I wanted to post it here in case somebody else has the same problem.
I was indicating in my searches that I was unable to publish or preview files in C4 and could not find a solution, then I switched the focus of my searches to the audio layers and that's when I found a solution at: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/03/adobe_captivate_4_installation.html
Now, I have to say this for anyone who may not be aware.  You should always back up your registry anytime you make changes to it and that changes to the registry can cause problems.  Having said that, here is the fix I used:.
Adobe Captivate 4 Installation Issues on Microsoft Windows XP
You can use SubInAcl tool from Microsoft to try fixing the permission issues in the Windows Registry.
Close all instances of Adobe Captivate and do the following steps -
    1) Download the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft Download Center and install it.
    2) Download this zip file
    3) Extract the zip file in a temporary folder. You will get two files - restoreRegPermCP4.bat, restoreCP4regentries.bat
    4) Copy the restoreRegPermCP4.bat to the folder which has SubInAcl.exe installed. Typically this would be at C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\.
    5) Double click to run the restoreRegPermCP4.bat file.
    6) Copy the restoreCP4regentries.bat to the folder in which Captivate 4 is installed. Typically it is at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4
    7) Open command prompt and navigate to that folder.
    8) Type restoreCP4regentries.bat and press enter.
    9) Make sure that all the messages that popup say "DllRegisterServer in 'some dll name' Succeeded"
This should have fixed the registry issues and things should work fine.
I hope this saves someone hours of searching for a solution.

So glad it helped you!  I know what you mean about Adobe.

  • Captivate 6 crashes when publishing to mp4

I have published all of these files already in the SWF format and would like to publish them in mp4. Each time I attempt to publish in mp4 Captivate crashes and closes with no remark of what error occured. All of my 9 files to publish react the same way (each published to swf and all crashed to mp4). What can I do?
Also I have experienced another problem with the table of contents and publishing to PDF, the PDF will show up as a white screen with no content but the same file in SWF will publish just fine with the table of contents. Why is the table of contents crashing the PDF?
    Thanks for your help

  • My interactive Quiz does not function if I publish in MP4 or YouTube.  I can I fix this?

I have created an interactive quiz in my Captivate presentation but I seem to lose the quiz if I publish in MP4 or YouTube.  Any fixes to this?

    Hi there,
We cannot have interactivity in a video. So, published output in .mp4 will not have interactivity.
We can only upload video formats to youtube, so we cannot have ineractive objects or quiz on Youtube.
To enable interactivity you will have to publish .swf, .pdf or .html, but again we cannot upload these formats on youtube.
    Thanks.

  • Captivate 1.0 - can't publish with audio on Vista

I imported several audio files in my Captivate 1.0 movies
running on Windows Vista. The problem is that there is no sound
after the movie is published to SWF. I can hear audio in editing
mode, when I press space to play the current slide (red playhad
moves). BTW, only WAV (PCM) can be imported, not mp3.
Any ideas how to get audio exported to swf with the rest of
    the movie?

As far as I can recall, the audio gets exported at the same
time as the rest of the project and you end up with 2 files (html
and swf). If you are using the html file to launch your outputs and
not getting any sound, then I can only assume that it is because of
Vista. Only Captivate 3 is vista compatable and you say you are
using Captivate 1. Further, Captivate 1 can import mp3 format
files, select "Audio" from the menu, then "Import".
I know this does not help you, but maybe someone else has a
further idea on teh sound problem.

I know how to import mp3 but it's not working on Vista with
Captivate 1.0. It works on WinXP though.
I know I end up with two files: SWF and html. I tried to open
swf in stand alone flash player. No sound.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid my team will have to do the
publishing on WinXP machines. We have enough Captivate 1.0 licences
but Captivate 3.0 upgrade is very expensive.

  • Can I publish captivate 7 to IIS 7 webserver?

I currently use UPK (oracle based tool) to deliver the eLearning content to end users which is published onto IIS 7 web server.
I want to switch to Captivate 7 to deliver this content but I am unsure if I will be able to publish to the IIS 7 web server.
I know you can publish files to be placed on a platform (this is the same concept as my current set up) but as I am not from a technical back ground I am unsure if I can use the current set up for Captivate.  Or will I need a third party app?
The ICT guys here are also unsure as they are not familiar with Captivate.
    Can anyone advise please?

In theory yes.   But in practice, whether you use HTML5 or not depends more on what kind of device and browser the end user is using to access your content.  If you're intending to deliver content to people on iPads or phones then you'll definitely need HTML5 output.  But don't expect it to work anywhere near as well as the HTM/SWF output from the same project file.
HTML5 MUST be served from a web server anyway. It's not going to work reliably (or at all) if delivered from a network or CD ROM, etc.

  • How can I publish a stand-alone file with Captivate 8?

I have just downloaded the new Captivate 8, but I an not sure how to publish a stand-alone, interactive file now.  In previous versions, one could publish an .exe file that didn't require a browser to work.  In the new version, there appears to be two options: HTML 5/SWF or video. The video option publishes a .mp4.  Is there still a way to publish a .exe?
    Thank you!

Frankly I am a little tired of Adobe stonewalling on the issue of removing exe and dmg publication facility from Adobe Captivate 8.  What a load of flimsy excuses from Adobe!!!!  In Cap 7 I exported to exe and dog all the time and I truly miss this facility.  Why does Adobe remove a perfectly good facility when upgrading?
It all makes me believe that Captivate 8 was rushed out without much thought other than to get a 'not working correctly' responsive design bit built in.  Did they not think about customer research?
And so, I've just paid over £300 to upgrade to a version of Captivate (8) I won't be using much.  This disgusts me and I am sure I am not alone.
And yes, why is Captivate not part of Creative Cloud?  I ask this question and I have asked it before.  Adobe will NEVER answer this question.
Adobe.  Please try and LISTEN to what your customers are saying.

  • How can I add an mp4 to a DITA topic?

    Hello,
I'm new to structured FrameMaker and to DITA. I'm using TCS5.
I'm having to compile a set of training materials that include video tutorials generated out of Captivate. I'm thinking I might have a ditamap of the text tutorial with all its concepts and tasks as topics, and then a separate topic at the end with the video, to which the others could link. I'd prefer to use the mp4 format rather than the outdated swf.
I've found how to do this by saving the ditamap as a Frame book with composite fm files. Of course I can just import the mp4 into the corresponding fm file. But this import is then not reflected or present in the pure dita topic and that makes exchangeability and re-use problematic. Ideally I would like to be able to do everything in pure dita without having to pass through fm files, much harder to maintain.
I've seen there is an "object" element in DITA which can be used to include video streaming, but I can't for the life of me find intelligible instructions on how to use it. The mp4 files would be in a folder of a local directory, or eventually in a sub-folder of our company web-site host.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.

    Hi Archaeopteryx...
You can add the DITA tagging to your topic, and it *may* generate properly through the DITA-OT, but it's not going to result in an embedded movie in the generated FM files when published through FrameMaker. In theory, someone could write a script to make this work .. but it's not currently set up to work properly in FM-generated output.
Here's a discussion of adding this tagging to a DITA topic on the Yahoo dita-users list ..

  • Publishing to mp4 almost doubles the file size

I have been trying to find someone in the forum with a similar problem but with no success. I hope someone can help me.
I have a Captivate 7 file that is 59 MB.
The resulting mp4 file after publishing is 107 MB.
When I publish the same file to swf it is 18 MB.
Why is the mp4 file so large and how can I reduce its size? I did not have this problem in Captivate 5.5. The mp4 file always was smaller than the cptx file.
There was one strange thing with this file. I had imported 5 images that were around 300K in size and in the Captivate library they showed up as huge files (I think it was something like 60MB per file). I deleted the images from the library after I discovered it and just imported new versions ofthose images. That solved the problem in the library. Could this have something to do with the size of the mp4 file.
I have already tried to create a new project and just copy all slides over. That did not make a difference.
Here is a screenshot of my file sizes
Any help is very much appreciated.
    Angela

RodWard, thanks for your answer. I wanted to publish using Cap 5.5 but I wasn't able to get my Cap 7course into Captivate 5.5. Whenever I tried to copy the slides or even objects from 7 to 5.5., I got an error message. How can I publish a course using Captivate 5.5. if the course is created in Captivate 7.
I have checked every setting three times and they are all correct meaning they are the same as I had them in Captivate 5.5.
I also tried to create a new project and pasted all slides into the project, then published it. That made no difference.
I have created 20 of theses courses in Captivate 5.5 and they all have the same parameters (it's a series of youtube videos https://www.youtube.com/user/BAEXPERTS). No exercises, no screen recordings, just images, voiceover, and some animation. They always have a similar length and the 20 of them that I created in Captivate 5.5 had around 20MB to 40MB and this one is 105MB. The whole course/video has only 19 slides. In all my other 20 videos/courses, the mp4 file is smaller than the Captivate file.
Also, I am not sure whether this is related, but Captivate 7 crashes many times a day (sometimes every 15 minutes - it looses the ability to paste and when I close the program to restart Captivate 7, it crashes). It seems to be related to my using the clipboard to paste images. Since I use many images in my videos/courses it is too time consuming to save every file. I usually open them directly from an online source in Fireworks and then paste the image into Captivate. I always open it as Administrator because I read that on the forum but it hasn't helped. Captivate 5.5 also lost the ability to paste on a regular basis but it never crashed when I tried to close Captivate as a results of this loss of functionality.
    Thanks, Angela

  • Cannot publish to MP4, get blank, yellow warning

I am using Captivate 6 (cloud - online) - which I just purchased June 2013. I use an iMac OS 10.8.4
The file size I am tyring to publish is 38.8 MB, but I cannot publish to MP4.
I even tried with a file that was only 4 MB, and cannot publish.
I also have the latest version of Captivate (6.2) Updated today.....
Tried after the upadte and still cannot publish.
The file names do not have any odd characters or spaces.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi there,
Can you please confirm what is the resolution of your project? (check the bottom right side or click on modify > rescale project and check height & width).
Create a back up of your project (save it with a different name on another location), then rescale the project, so that W & H both should be in even numbers. (increase or decrease W or H by 1 to make them even)
Then republish your project in .MP4 and check whether this works?
    Thanks.

Publish Issue: mp4 missing 1st PPT slide (Cap 6.0.0.199 on Win7)
First slide, my title slide with audio, is not the the published mp4.
I can insert a phantom slide into the project, before my title slide, as a work-around, but I shouldn't have to do that.
Is there something I clicked on or need to click on?
    Thanks!

First of all, please apply the patch to your version. Captivate 6.0.0.199 had a truckload of issues. Here is the link for the patch.

How are you inserting the audio? Is it coming from the PPT or did you insert it in Captivate? Is it a slide audio or is it associated with an object?

  • How can I publish a project so that the link to embedded flv is not lost?

When publishing an Adobe Captivate 3 project, the embedded flv file does not play.
How can I publish a project so that the link to embedded flv is not lost?

I am not really sure, if I understand you right. But try this:
Don’t place a picture, but draw a box and use the "Fill" command to put a picture into it.
(Don’t click onto the color swatch, but onto the blue link "Fill".)
In this case responsivness should work.
