Captivate 7 course published to ScormCloud is only playing on some browsers

We recently purchased Captivate 7 to convert our old elearning content. It was simple enough to use, but I am now finding that the courses are not playing across all browsers. The courses are pretty basic slides (image, mp3, text) and every so often I have an mp4 video embedded on a slide. I published them to swf and html5. I then uploaded them to scormcloud to test, and I get the following results:
On a Mac (osX lion 10.7.1)
Plays fine on Firefox
Does not even start on Chrome
Does not even start on Safari (gives an "error initializing communications with LMS)
iPhone/iPad:
Cannot even get it to start. Just shows a blank black screen.
On my PC (Windows 8):
Plays fine on Chrome
Plays fine on Safari (although the videos load a little slower)
I have yet to test it on Firefox or IE -- but only because they don't work after the upgrade to 8!
Windows 7:
Plays fine on Chrome and IE (slight delay in videos)
Plays on Firefox but with significant delay on video slides.
Any thoughts on what the issue may be and how to address it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Arthur

Thanks for the reply, Rod. When published to just SWF, it plays fine. But the course does not play at all when published as html5. The html5 tracker shows there are no incompatibilities. Publishing as html5 seems pretty cut and dry, though, so I don't think I have any settings that would prevent it from working. But I cannot even get the preview HTML5 output in web browser to work.
I combined SWF and HTML5 in my original post only because that is the way we need them to be published ultimately. Feel free to offer any suggestions here if you can think of anything right off the bat, but I will post a new question in the forum, specifically addressing the html5 issue.
Thanks,
Arthur

• Music only plays on some players?

Why would a CD I created only play on some players and not others? The player in my 4runner only gives me an error message and yet the same CD plays perfectly on other players, including older ones. Odd ??!!

The first thing to check is that the blank you are using is a CD-R, not a CD-RW. CD-RWs (they are the rewritable ones) often have trouble playing in regular CD players.
If that is not the problem, the next things to try are to redo the burn at a lower burn speed, maybe even 2x, or to try a different brand of blank CD-R.
(Nice chuckle about the frequency, but that is not the problem.)

• New eSATA only plays back some shows

Just installed an External Drive over the weekend. It seemed to work fine on Monday & Tuesday. Tonight, however, it will not play back 2 of the shows that were recorded yesterday (Unforgettable & NCIS) it will play back a movie this morning & a TV show recorded on Monday! Anyone know what's up?
Here's what happens: We go to the recorded list on the DVR, find the show & hit play, it seems to pause, then returns to the screen that says 'hit OK to play', we hit OK, it pauses again & then goes back to live TV - this doesn't happen on all the shows, only on ~half. There isn't any obvious trends to know what shows it will or will not play - they all have time listed & are taking memory space on the eSATA
Suggestions anyone?

Hello MichaelM,
I am sorry you are having difficulty using your external drive for play back. What brand and size eSATA drive are you using? Have you tried power cycling the external drive or DVR yet? You can also reset your DVR using the In Home Agent tool right from your computer. If you need additional help let us know.

• Problems with instant play in some browsers

This is not a problem with how Safari works, but I thought someone here might help me with a frustrating problem for which I can find no solution.
I created several web pages with embedded QuickTime movies in mp4 format. They are constructed so that the movies begin instantly to play as soon as the pages are accessed. This has worked for the past couple of years regardless of which browser was used ( Mac versions of Safari, Firefox versions <4.x, Sunrise and others; Windows versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox).
It has recently been brought to my attention that this functionality is broken when updating to Firefox 4.x for Mac or when using Chrome for Mac. Using either of these browsers to access the pages results in a static page with no video play. The user must wait 1-2 minutes for the video to completely download and then it will automatically play. Since the movies play fine on multiple browsers, including the new Firefox 4.x for Windows, it seems to me that the problem is not in how the movies were coded but rather in how the browsers handle the html code for the pages.
The movies were edited in FCP, exported to Compressor, processed as mp4 streaming video and then embedded in web pages using Freeway Pro software with the "auto play" option enabled.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

a sample page is: http://lccut.org/videofiles/gospelvideo6high.html

Here's the response I got from Freeway Pro support:
Hi John
There seems to be an issue at the moment with the way that Firefox 4 (and to a certain extent Chrome) handles QuickTime movies. If you go to the test page on our site at <http://users.softpress.com/keith/firefox4test/> you'll see that it is very erratic in what it shows and how it plays - but note that you may need to wait a while in between clicking on Firefox 4's Refresh button to see that the results change from one refresh to the next.
Freeway is certainly publishing the code correctly, so this is does not appear to be a Freeway issue - though we would like to get to the source of the problem so we can advise customers on the best options to fix things. If you Google for "firefox4 quicktime movie problem" (without the quotes) you will see that this is not a problem specific to Freeway users.
Leopard users report that Firefox 4 displays and plays QT movies fine, but Snow Leopard seems to have problems. This may be due to the way that QuickTime and Firefox 4 play together, as Leopard and Snow Leopard use slightly different versions of QuickTime.
You should, however, be aware that non-Mac users will always need to download the QuickTime plug-in (which many PC users are reluctant to do, and some may not be allowed to by their IT department) for them to be able to see the movies play. The only truly universal method for offering video content on a web page is to use Flash .flv files and then use the FLV Player Action so that iPhone/iPad users will see an alternative (non-Flash) movie which is created by the Action. See the movie tutorial at <http://www.softpress.com/support/tutorials> (Episode 14) for details of how to set this up.
As soon as we find a workaround for the problems with Firefox 4 and Chrome, we will put up an article on our KnowledgeBase at <http://www.softpress.com/kb/>. It might be that Firefox and Chrome will release a new update soon to fix the problem, in which case we will tell you which version you need to download an install.
Best regards
So the FW people insist that there software is encoded the pages properly and it is the fault of the newer Mac browsers causing the error.

• Error Messages When Burning / Disk only plays in certain DVD players

When burning most all of my DVD's in DVD Studio Pro, after all of the encoding in the burn process and the program starts the initialization, I get a Media Error Calibration Error message. When I retry to burn, everything seems fine. But, my DVD's only play in some DVD players. Others say unreadable disc. Any ideas?

• Flashmediaplayback only working in certain browsers?

I am having a problem with a flash media playback on my website. I have installed the flashmediaplayback.swf on my server and embedded the relevant code and the videos were playing great on my video site - no problems at all.
However I got a couple of emails from people who told me they could not see the videos on my site - they were getting just a 'black box'. So I decided to check on a different computer (my laptop) and sure enough I couldnt get the videos to play when I accessed my site via my laptop. (I got the 'blackbox' as well)
So I simply cannot figure out why the player seems to be working properly on my site, but only when accessing via certain pcs. Is this some sort of browser issue perhaps? My PC is IE8, my laptop is IE7, yet i have confirmed that someone else can watch videos using IE7, so it appears problem is not the IE browser version.
Is this something to do with the flash plugins? or would you know what is causing this strange problem, I'm baffled why videos only play for some people and not others.
Hoping someone can advise. many thanks

Hi,
FMP is hosted on Adobe servers. Are you sure it's not Strobe Media Playback you're concerned?
Can you provide more info? A link to the non-working instance?
Besides that, with the information you provided, I would ask what Flash Player version the viewers are using.

• Captivate 7 course published to html5 not working

I recently created an elearning course and published to both SWF and HTML5 for SCORM 1.2. However, in doing so, I could not get it to play on my iphone, and on the Mac only some browsers worked.
I separated the two outputs in two different versions and published them to SCORMCloud with the following results:
Published to SWF - works fine across all browsers.
Published to HTML5 - does not work on any browser, or iphone/ipad. I can't even get the "Preview HTML5 output in web browser" to work.
In all cases, we simply see a blank screen. The HTML5 tracker does not show that there are any incompatibilities. The options under externalized resources are left unchecked. I have included a screen shot of the html5 settings, just in case. They seem pretty cut and dry, but is there something somewhere--here or on another screen--that I am missing?
I am really in a bind at this point since this course was supposed to be up and running a couple days ago. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Best,
Arthur

They're all in the same boat with you. It's not working reliably for them either.
You need to go back to the drawing board and ask yourself (or your client) some hard questions about your target audience and your target course content.
Is is REALLY the kind of content that you want people to view on a tiny smart phone screen? E.g. is it desktop software training? If not, then why bother with trying to support tiny screens?
Are the people in your target audience REALLY likely to be viewing this content ONLY on their phones, or could they just as easily view it in their web browser on their computer? If so, tell them so.
The truth is that most clients have no idea about the technical limitations of this brave new world we call Mobile Learning, and many are now picking up HTML5 as the latest technological buzzword they trot out to show how "with it" they are:
"We need our content to be HTML5-compatible to accommodate the m-learning landscape and maximize shareholder expectations bulldust bulldust bulldust...ad nauseum."
While I agree that HTML5 is probably the future of e-learning, it's causing more than it's fair share of headaches in the present.

• Captivate 4 Movies in PDF only plays for 5 sec on Macs

I created a PDF document that has 3 Captivate 4 movies embedded. The movies play just fine on Windows but only play for 5 seconds on macs. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, please let me know what the solution is. I have searched on the Community Help and can't find anything related to this problem. Thanks.

Someone answered my question on the Acrobat forum. I needed to upgrade to 9 and use the Flash Tool which solved the problem.

• Unable to overwrite course published on Adobe Connect

Just in the past week, I've attempted to overwrite a couple of courses published in Captivate7 to Adobe Connect. I usally get a communication error, then have to begin the publishing process over. Then Captivate displays that the course has published successfully, but when I play the course from the Adobe Connect link, it plays the old content and not the new content.
The work around is to publish the course under a new title, but this gets to be a pain due to links to the course being already published. Have others been having this issue. Overwriting courses is something I do on a regular basis, and this problem has only become an issue recently.

Please try to delete the Adobe Connect Server configuration and add it again. Then try to publish your content again to Connect

• Captivate course crashes when zooming in on iPad

Hi,
I am having a weird problem and am wondering if anyone else has exprienced something similar. I've published a course as html5 (Captivate7, includes the patch from November), SCORM 1.2.
The course itself, and it's content, plays just fine on the iPad. However, whenever I zoom in, it crashes Safari. I have the course posted to our LMS.
To test if it's the LMS, I've uploaded the course to scormcloud, and it has played fine. However, I noticed, that user zooming seems to be disabled on scormcloud, so I couldn't actually check if it is simply the zooming in, that causes the issue, or if it is my LMS.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, or has anyone figured out a way to avoid this? I know it's possible to disable zooming into websites using meta tags, but am not sure how to make that happen with a file published from Captivate.
Thanks

This worked for me, thanks

Re: iPad Mini Safari scrolling problem
Jan 1, 2013 11:15 AM (in response to amirfromcupertino)
I was dealing with this same issue an my iPad Mini. Here's what I did yesterday and I haven't seen the problem since:
1) Go to Settings >> Safari
2) Turn on Private Browsing
3) Clear Cookies & Data
I cannot guarantee this will always solve the problem, but it has worked for me.
Let me know if that works for anyone else :)
P.S. I'm a developer myself and I would give the software developers a little slack. Programming is more crazy than people think. Most likely they expected the iPad Mini to work exactly like the full-size iPad, but bugs always pop up. It will get fixed :) Chrome is always an alternative if Safari is struggling.

• ITunes 8.0 only Plays One Song at a Time, then Stops! AARGH!

Someone, please help. I have tried everything I can think of, to no avail.
For some reason, when I play a song in my Music Library on my laptop iTunes 8.0, it stops playing after each song. When the song ends, iTunes stops; it does not move to the next song in my library, it just stops. I have to click on the next song to play that song, and when that song is done it stops.
I have tried creating Music Playlists, does not help. I have tried checking and unchecking the Repeat and Shuffle options, still nothing.
This does not happen on my iPods, only when I play songs in my Music Library on iTunes from my laptop.
If you have any suggestions for a solution, please tell me. I am beyond frustrated having to click on the next song every time.

I have the same problem with iTunes only playing one track at a time. It didn't use to be this way ... and seems to have developed after one of the recent updates (late December 2008).
I did, however, find that the problem was "solved" by checkmarking all the tracks that I expect to hear played. However, this won't work for me because ... as it has always been in the past ... I use these check boxes to tell iTunes which tracks to synchronize to my iPod. Since my desktop library is many times larger than can be loaded onto my iPod, I obviously cannot check all of the tracks.
Since when did these check marks become **ALSO** a signal to tell iTunes what tracks to play continuously on iTunes?!?
Previously, I have **ONLY** used these check-marks to signal to iTunes the tracks that should be synchronized to my iPod.
If the foregoing advice (check-marking all songs to be played continuously on **iTunes** ... then it would appear that the programmers have introduced a conflict of functions in the iTunes user interface.
The check-mark system is a simple and intuitive method to select which tracks to synchronize to the iPod ... it is not at all intuitive that you would be expected to check these **SAME** check-boxes to play tracks on the iTunes desktop.
Generally, when listening to music at home on iTunes, I prefer to listen to albums as published from the first track to the last track. Occasionally, I may wish to shuffle tracks within an album or within a genre.
However, when on the go, I sometimes shuffle music entirely. In any event, I cannot possibly download my entire library onto my iPod because of memory limitations.
In conclusion, I do not wish to tamper with my check-marks ... I know, at any time, how much memory is currently in use on my iPod and so can add and/or delete check-boxes to adjust the tracks from my iTunes main library that are played on my iPod.
Of course, then, I am massively frustrated that I cannot listen to albums continuously without messing-up my iPod library selections.
This was never a problem before ... why has this behavior changed?
This could, of course be resolved if the Apple development team added a command "Continuous Play" [On] or [Off] ... say under the [Controls] menu, logically placed above the "Shuffle" menu item.
Comments?
Does anyone on the Apple iTunes development team monitor this discussion?

• Trouble viewing Captivate 8 published output.

Trouble viewing Captivate 8 published output. I created a course for a client who also wants a video of it. I published and I can see it on my end, but when I send them the files using DropBox, they can't open the .SWF, the Chrome.HTML, or the AVI or MP4's I've put out there. At first I thought it was operator error, but there are 5 people who can't view them. Was I supposed to add other supporting docs that were not in the Published folder?
Help, please.
Teresa

That's what I thought too. I wonder if they are trying to run it right out of Dropbox. I also told them they could right click and open in Internet Explorer if Chrome was problematic.
So I only have to provide the packaged file right? I've always just delivered the published folder, so I was really at a loss as to why they can't run it. Could this also be a Systems Security issue? Perhaps their employer blocks this sort of action?
Thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate the help (and validation).

• Adobe Captivate not publishing results

Hi,
We appear to be having a problem with Captivate where it's not publishing results to a network drive.
We have applied the fix as details below:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.htm l
3rd tab along, click 'Always Allow'
Add
T:\
\\my-network-path\tdrive\
I have tried this however its not publishing results.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this would not be working?
Thanks

The Flash Global Security settings govern whether or not content on a LAN or remote drive will play properly for the user that adds this location to their trusted settings. However, it doesn't necessarily give you PERMISSION TO UPLOAD published content to that location.
If you're having difficulty getting Captivate content published TO the location (as opposed to playing it from there) then you need to investigate whether or not you have write permissions for that folder. This is network administration thing, not usually connected to Flash security. It could also be that there is some restriction built into your IT network that will only allow certain filetypes to be uploaded.
Bottom line is that you may need to check with your IT dudes.

• Captivate not publishing mpeg-4 video's or uploading to youtube

Hi,
Got a really annoying problem with Captivate 5.5, it's the trial version and until this I was intending to buy the product. But I've just spent a day producing a video with it, the project comes to 1.8Gb so it's not small.
Anyway, it all works fine, until I click on File > Publish > Select MP4 Video(*.mp4) > Select the Apple iPhone 4/ Apple iPod Preset and click on Publish.
The software launches does it's pop-up dialoge thing and Adobe Captivate Video Publisher appears with a second progress box saying "Generating Video..." the progress bar sat at 0% while I went away and watched a 2 hour movie. All it says under the progress bar is "Initializing..." and it does bugger all else. I've rebooted the PC, and tried several times with absolutely no sucess.
The project exports as a SWF and EXE file just fine. But the process balls up when exporting a .MP4 file. I've even tried different formats. But as far as I can tell the sodding thing isn't even starting the encode.
The software is running in administrator mode, and exporting to a file location that isn't protected by UAC so there's no reason for it I've even disabled my virus software just in case that was lagging the system down. But nothing I do seems to make the damndest bit of difference.
Can someone offer any advice. I'm not spending hundreds of pounds on software that can't even export to MP4, not when Camtasia does it just fine.
(System spec, Windows 64, 4Gb RAM, 3.0 Dual core, nVidia 8800GTS 320Mb)

No it's not dragging it's feet. I can deal with dragging feet. If I had to leave my system rendering for a day, so be it. I spend more time then that rendering CGI graphics. It's not "dragging it's feet" it's not even getting up out of the sofa. It can't be arsed. Error reporting? Not for Adobe! None of that peasky information for users from them! No, lets just leave them sitting there waiting while it "initializes" that's real helpful. Sitting there with a 0% bar. No helpful information like "whow dude your project is MASSIVE, this will take a while." no handy progress bar showing how the initialization is going. No no, none of that for Adobe. That would be too helpful. Obviously they're going to charge you so much money for the single most unprofessional peace of tat I've ever had the misfortune to use.
P.S. I chopped up the project, into no more than 15 minute segments. It managed to render out the first 4, how it's doing exactly the damn same thing for section 5. Apparently 15 minutes of real world tutorial too much to expect as well.
P.S.S. It's hundreds of megabytes isn't a problem in this day and age. I can download a 500Mb file in what? Half an hour? Perhaps 2 for slower users. Hell I download games from Direct2Drive totalling 8.7Gb takes a coulpe of days, but there's no problem doing it. As for users without broadband, DVD's hold 4.7Gb, couple of those isn'g a problem. I've got other solutions that will stick 5 - 7 hours of HD interactive content onto a single DVD without a problem. The only real world bandwidth colleges really have to use is whatever it takes to report the examination statistic and answers at the end of the session. I don't think a PC is sold these days with less than 80Gb, and single issue network deployment solutions aren't a problem.
It's not like their streaming system is worth damn, if you're worried about users running off with your materials. There's no effective DRM solution built into captivate so nothing stopping users capturing the stream and re-hosting it. Not low bandwidth sales pitch they've got you on is totally insane. I can't see any way in which this product can justify it's price tag. I can only imagine there's educational material out there that's so bad it's making users wonder why they pay for the course in the first place.
Sod it, I'll program the thing in C++ that'll shave off a few gigabytes given the bloated shite Captivate generates. 1.8 is a sodding joke. I can encode 2.5 hour movies at just over 1.2gb in freaking 720p HD. This thing can't even manage 50 minutes of full motion content, and 40 minutes of still images with mpeg-3 compressed audio inserted into the slide. 1.8 Gb for 50 minutes FMV?

Hi,

Details-

FIle created in Presenter 7 on aother computer, copied into a new computer (along with all the resource and data and so files).
it's long, about 45 min
I am able to preveiw the entire thing- audio works, embedded shockwave demos created in captivate work. It just won't play in the browser. I've tried both 'view output when complete' when I'm publising it, and just manuallly clicking on the index file after it's published. neither works. I also tried using explorer but that was worse- it leaves a white screen without even loading the viewer.
just to test I made a new presentation with only a couple slides and no audio. that will publish and play in the browser properly.
I have the latest flash and shockwave.
It seems like it should work since it previews fine.
any ideas??
thanks!

Hi Sunil-
I watched the global settings video and added my C: drive and also the entire 'my adobe presentations' and the indivisual file for this presentation to the allow list. It didn't help. is there something else I need to do on the flash settings other than this 'allow' list? (picture below).
The other option you mentioned was transfering using a package. my old computer has Presenter 7. I don't see in that version of presneter an option to create a package. I can try that if you can tell me how to do that.
finally, if i would need to share a file with you how would I do that? it's a 24000 KB file.
