Captivate 7 Master Slide Placeholders - need to not be Smart Objects

Hi,
We are trying to use the Print output for our storyboards so that editors can proof and edit all text captions in the course. The output templates do not recognize smart objects and it seems that the only placeholders that work for titles and subtitles are smart objects.
Does anyone have a suggestion or work around?
Thanks
Kris

Hello Sreekanth,
That would be great if only the Handouts would actually output the slide images. They don't for and none of the suggestions in the forums to get the conversion in Word to work correctly has helped.
We need the slide images, notes (or closed caption since handouts don't work for us), and all text captions. Would be great if we go the smart objects to display with handouts but we must have the slide images and Word 2010 with Captivate 7 on a Windows 7 64-bit computer does not output the slide images in handouts. It does output the slide images with the Storyboard template so we have been trying to use the Storyboard template and add the tags for CC and text captions.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Kris

  • Adobe Captivate 6 Master Slide Smart Shape Button

If you create a Smart Shape and use it as a button on a Master Slide is there any way to not have it show on one slide of a presentation or is it all or nothing?
    Thank you

Objects on master dsliiides have no  ID , no way to control their
visibility. That is possible with a shape button that is displayed for rest
of project on first slide. Or, since you talk about some slides, creat a
duplicate of master slide that has no button?

  • File Place, but not as Smart Object?

Can you File>Place and Image without it being a Smart Object layer?

Leaving as Smart Object is usually the way to go, but if for some reason you don't want a Smart Object you can always use: Layer: Rasterize: Smart Object.
One problem with vector smart objects is the vector data is not present in Photoshop output. Meaning if a document has vector smart objects and you save as PDF, the SO ends up as pixels in the PDF output (check by opening the PDF with Acrobat and zoom in)
You do have the option of copying vector data, then pasting as paths or shape layers. This is wrought with complications but it can yield vector output.

  • I would like to create a new layer NOT AS SMART OBJECT. It is the default. How can I change it?

    Hi!
I would like to create a few layers, non of them should be a smart object. But when I create the layer automatically it becomes a smart object. How can I change it?
    Thanks!

    Hi Roniarbel,
Go to general tab in Preferences and uncheck the option "Always create smart object when placing" Close Photoshop and then reopen it and check.
Thank you for posting on Adobe Forums.

  • Master slide background color

When I select the master slide on the far left (the slightly bigger one), and I deselect "project background" and change the "stage:" to a different color, nothing happens.  I am trying to use the solid color (paint can) and I put in my choice of Hex color (005983).  When I try the same thing on the individual master slides to the right, I also get nothing.  I even changed the Edit>Preferences>Defaults>Background color to the same color.  And I get nothing.
I can (and have) put other things (logo, color bar) on the Master slide, and it propigates to the right on the other slides.  What am I missing?

There are objects on the main master slide, they are not merged into the background. Yes, you can set the stage color for a normal slide as well:
What do you really want to achieve with selecting a blue color for the main master slide? It will not show up because you have objects on that slide that cover the stage color.
I know, documentation is not very helpful. I have been writing a lot about Captivate to provide some clues, but not about master slides. It is a lot of work to write out documentation and I'm offering everything for free. Same with answers here, where Rod and Rick are also spending many hours trying to provide answers.
Depending on the theme you started with, there can be a project background. You used the white theme. That background will always show up on the main master slide, even when you uncheck Project background. If you want not to see that Project background on a normal slide, but a full blue color, you have to unselect Use Master Slide Background, then unselect Project Background (is dimmed as long as you use Master Slide Background) and then you can use a stage color. Those settings I show in the screenshot.

  • Master Slide Body

Is there any way of placing two body boxes in a master slide?

I'm not sure this is the solution. By making a second text box (assuming the first one present it because the "body" item is checked in the Master Slide inspector), you're not making a duplicate "body" style text box with the same attributes (font, size, bullet style, etc.). Yes, you can customize the second, added text box to look like the "body" text box, declare it as a text placeholder as you mention, and return to the regular slide. Now you have the dummy text in the second text box ALWAYS present while the first, "body" text box has the "click to change" text and would be hidden if the slide where placed in slideshow mode with no user text added. At the same time, however, the second text box you created in the master would show the default text you entered in the master, that is, it would NOT be hidden in the slideshow. So, if this second (or more) manually added text boxes, declared as text placeholders, are added to the master slide, be sure you truly use them in your original slides based on that master or your dummy text will appear in your slideshow.
Wow, long comment...but I too am trying to learn why I can't add many "body" style text boxes to the master slide. Unfortunately, PowerPoint 2008 for Mac has Keynote beat with its multi-content style layout element. I'd love to leave PP behind and go all Apple, but I can't without this feature equally and easily available in Keynote. Maybe v.5.0.3? Or at the very latest, the version is iWork `10.

  • Smart Builds on master slides?

I'm trying to build a "portfolio" template where i can create case studies out of a master slide template. Some of these case studies have many images in them, and Smart Builds are the PERFECT tool for cycling through them on a single slide.
However, when i place a Smart Build on a master slide, its contents are not accessible in the slide show itself.
This seems like a really odd oversight to me, since one of the most useful ways to use Smart Builds is on master slides. Unless, of course, i'm missing something and it is actually possible to use Smart Builds in this way.

Just took a peek at Smart Builds and now I'm wondering how editable they are (ie are they based on .qtz files). Anyway, you can workaround masking on smart build objects by masking them first, copying, pasting into Pages, copying from there, then pasting back into the Drop Zone (click to highlight it, then paste). It should work directly in Keynote, but, hey, that's why we love Keynote!
I posted about the problem here.

  • PowerPoint Slides and Master Slides

I want to know if its possible to insert a PP presentation to a Captivate 5 Master Slide template. I looked at the Master Slide properties and i selected both options but the Master Slide information overwrites the slide presetantion.
can anyone let me know if this can be done and how?

To my knowlede this cannot be done.  Master Slides are used to provide mostly static elements that are reused across other slides (like backgrounds or foregrounds).

  • Psd files not updating edited smart objects (PS CC as of 6/3/14)

I created a master PSD file and added four different TIF files as 'linked' (not embedded) Smart Objects.  If I edit these linked files (they open when double-clicked, or 'Edit Contents') make changes and then save & close the edited master TIF files, the main PSD file does not reflect the edited changes. If I double click the Smart Object, it opens and shows my edits, but to save & close still does not update the master PSD file.   I do this all the time without issue, so I am perplexed.  Even if I right-click the smart object and select "Update All Modified Content" nothing changes.  Closing the file, restarting Photoshop- nothing updates the main PSD file with the changes to the edited TIF files... EXCEPT if I 'replace contents' with the same file: then it updates the PSD.
    Any ideas?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Smart object not opening?

I am using CS3 and I have been having issues with my smart objects from camera raw, I given me an error, "could not edit smart object because disk not available". I have read a similar post, although they where not talking about camera raw smart objects and it was referring to people working over a network which I am not doing. In the past I have found that if I make sure that I open Bridge first, the smart objects will then work. I keep all of my raw images and my working files on the same disk and right now even if I open bridge first, I can not get the smart object to work. Any ideas?

Glad to see some interest. Thanks!
I've had it on both my old system and my new one, the old was a Dual 2.5 G5, the new one is a Dual 2.8 Quad. Both machines are kept fully up to date. The new ones system was created by updating off of the old one.
    PS 10.0.1.
It's happened with both files from illustrator and from files created within photoshop - both those created by 'convert to smart object' and 'convert to smart filters'.
I can't remember if I've ever seen the error on either my laptop (macBook) or the mac I use at work (Quad 2.7 G5), if it happens on either I'll mention it here.
Some things about my system that might be part of the cause:
I have four external drives, three firewire, one USB.
    I have four internal drives.
    I use a wacom.
I'm always connected to a network of at least one other mac (g4 733), two if my laptop is on.
I also get the error where I can't save the file (disk not available?), and have to save out to a different drive, and then restart Photoshop.
I use spaces and sometimes get the flashing cursor error, and have to restart photoshop.
That's all I can think of.
    Thanks for the interest.

  • Placeholders on Master Slides in Captivate 5 don't seem to work

Hi I'm very new to Captivate and I am exploring the trial version (5) to learn what it can do.
I am trying to create a project template with a master slide. I have added text caption placeholders to the master slide and saved the file as a project template.
When I create a 'new project from template' using this file I have created a slide based upon the master with placeholders but I am unable to edit the placeholders from the film strip view (they are not clickable, and stay locked). Am I doing something wrong?
There appeared to be a thread about an issue with Master slides but I don't know if this has been resolved.
I'm hoping it's an error on my part (which someone can hopefully correct me on) rather than a bug in Captivate as this would seem to be a pretty fundamental feature when creating courseware.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
To really know the power of master slides and templates I should explain a lot more, but in my previous answer I just tried to explain why your approach was not the right one. In a template you can have much more than just a couple of slides with placeholders, you can have typical object styles, advanced actions, user variables etc. It would really need more than a short answer in this thread to explain all that. And that is different from just a blank slide, because placeholders (keeping all introduced styles) will not exist in a blank project, where you would have to insert text to have the proper layout etc.
Master slides can have variables inserted in a Text Caption, or even have a rollover caption that can have variables in it. I tried to explain the use of variables in this article, and there are examples to be used on a master slide:
Using power of variables without advanced actions
In my blog I'm always using master slides, you'll find links pointing to other articles

If you work with stencil slides, indeed the user will have to duplicate stencil slides to use them. Captivate is not Powerpoint, which is meant for presentations on the first place, while Captivate is meant for developing software training, soft skills trainings, assessments and perhaps presentations.
I'm sorry, just wanted to help you.

  • [Captivate 8] HTML5 Publishing - First Slide shows locally but not on test server

    Hi all,
    The Question
Has anyone run into this issue of the first slide not showing on HTML5 (and/or SWF) until you open up the TOC and select the recalcitrant slide and then it shows (and operates) just fine? Not on project load, just when it is selected.
    The Description
I've only been using Captivate 8 for a short period of time, and I've run face first into a little bit of a bigger hurdle than I expected. At present, I have a simple, linear Captivate project that in essence replicates a Powerpoint (client specified). Everything was working just fine until I tried a HTML 5 Preview from Captivate 8 and first slide did not show. After some research my solutions to the problems I encountered was to:
Local preview occasionally causes a glitch. Solution: Publish locally and (pre)view the result. This didn't work.
Group all objects on the first slide and then attach the action Show to that group. This fixed the problem.
Following that I published it to a host server (test server at the moment, but ultimately it will the live dev server). I encountered the same problem, so:
Tried the group trick, above. No joy.
Opened up the TOC and navigated to the other slides. None of the buttons (previous slide, next slide) worked.
Renamed the "Mouse.mp3" to remove that annoying click. Result: All project buttons worked, but the first slide was not showing (grouped or otherwise).
Removed all master slide objects from the slide. No joy.
Removed the button (action: Next Slide) and reduced the play time of the slide to 5 seconds so that the slide would play upon loading, then just move to the next slide. No joy.
Tried all of the above with SWF and HTML 5 publication.
Tried all of the above with SWF only.
Once again, when I open up the TOC and navigate to the first slide ("Title Page") the blank slide that is populated only by the lonesome borders becomes the Title slide, as it should. Also, local preview from the file (\project\index.htm) works just fine.
Obviously I'm missing something. It's probably something incredibly obvious, so I thank you for your patience.
    The Technical
    Captivate 8.0.0.145
OS: Maverick OSX and Windows XP Pro SP1
    Other: Adobe CS (up-to-date install)

First, apologies--I didn't see the "Getting Started" sub-community so if this thread can be moved there then thank you. Second, I missed some important details.
    Project Details
Captivate 8, blank project*. Content at the moment is only text captions, media resources (pictures, two web objects [to Vimeo]), and transparent buttons. The project is stripped of the play bar as it is a self-paced lesson/module.
    * I don't have the lead time to make this a responsive design, though that is the ultimate goal once the one-size-fits-all version (1024x627) has been released.
    Testing Hardware Details
The following are the machines and browsers I've tested the HTML5 output on.
Mac (10.9.4) -- Chrome 36.0.1985.125 (hangs; need to open the TOC and click on "Title Page"), Firefox 30 (works fine), Safari 7.0.5 (9537.77.4) (works fine)
Windows 7 Pro SP1 -- IE 11 (works straight away! *shock*), Chrome 35.0.1916.153 m (hung, but on refresh worked fine), Firefox 31.0 (throws out unsupported error [known feature] but then loads up just fine).
Chromebook -- Chrome OS 35.0.1916.155 (worked straight off).
Smartphones -- Not supported, but iPhone 4S (iOS 7.1.2) (works fine, but not designed); Galaxy S5 Chrome (broken).
Tablets -- iPad2 (iOS 7.1.2) (play button loads partial content, on refresh works fine); Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Chrome (broken), Android Browser (works fine).
I'm more than willing to share a link to the project and the Captivate 8 file, but just thought that I would see if this gets any traction/recognition before going deeper.

  • How do I set up a master slide in Keynote that provides placeholders for multiple images?

I came across an article in Mac|Life (Oct 2012 p90) titled "Create a Stylish Slideshow".  The steps include creating a master slide that allows for you to add multiple photos.  My master slide list for all themes allows for only one photo per slide.  What am I missing and how can I set up a slide to which I can add multiple photos as they do in this article?  Yes, I am using Keynote '09 v5.3.

Thanks for the info.  Following the instructions which are covered in chap 12 of the User Manual, I found that I cannot use shapes as placeholders.  The only success I experienced was if I used an actual photo image.  With photos I could select  Define as Media Placeholder, with Shapes, the only option was to Define as Text Placeholder.  I will address this with a thorough review of chapter 12.
My initial problem was that I assumed that all themes in Keynote possessed the same set of Master slides.  When I found this not to be the case I looked at each theme and identified 12 of the 44 provided different master slide options which provided placeholders for more than 1 photo (a few provided up to 6).  For helpful information for others, here is a listing of those themes that provide master slides for more than 1 photo:  Editorial, Kyoto, Brushed Canvas, Typeset, Craft, Stock Book, Blue Print, Vellum, Modern Portfolio, White Corners, Storyboard, Formal.
Thanks again.  Your feedback got me on the right track to resolving my problem.

  • Master Slides - Need alternate solution.

I am an Apple Keynote/Aperture user who desires to create multi-image slides using a grid in which individual photos are deposited into cells like picture frames - sort of like a school yearbook layout. I have experimented with creating master slides using "Tables" and "Shapes" within Keynote, but find that they have limitations:
    1. Using shapes in Master Slides, it is extremely difficult to get equal-sized borders between images using the "align" and "distribute" functions, particularly so if the cells are different sizes. As you are aware, these functions only operate on a horizontal or vertical basis. Is there a function that would automatically align all the cells on a slide in both dimensions?
    2. With Tables, I cannot zoom or re-orient the image other than "fit" or "fill".
I would like to have a variety of various "grids" stored and available for use again and again. I am guessing that some software manufacturer makes a variety of template type grids - like the type graphic artists must use - that can be employed within the Apple system. If these do exist it would make my job a lot simpler. So my question is: On what computer user's forum should I raise this question?
Thanks for your time and I would appreciate any thoughts you might have.

    1. If I click "create a new master slide", Keynote duplicates the nearest master in the list. Is there a way to start out with a blank master?
No. As you say, creating a new master slide always just duplicates the currently selected master
    2. I dragged some images from Finder into media
placeholders in a new slide. Later when I came back to Keynote I found the images had been replaced with a grey background, outline "X" and question mark. What happened?
Keynote doesn't treat images the way it treats audio and video i.e. images are always copied into the presentation, whereas with audio and video you have a choice to simply link to them. You wouldn't see the 'broken' image holders if you, say, dropped some images into a presentation and then moved/deleted the original images in the Finder. Keynote would be using the local copies it made of the images, and would have no dependency on the originals.
The only way I could duplicate this was to actually view the package contents of the presentation and manually delete the local copies of images that Keynote had stored. When I did that to a presentation and then opened it, I did indeed see the grey boxes with question marks that you describe.
Can you describe in more detail what you did between placing the images and then "coming back to Keynote" to find that the images had broken. Was it really just a case of closing the file, and then opening it again?
    3. What is the proper way to select a master slide when creating a new slideshow slide?
I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. Are you talking about the best way to choose which master slide is applied to a new slide that you create in a presentation?
Similar to creating a new master slide, you don't really have much control over which master is used. Keynote will use the master of whichever slide you have selected when you add the new slide.
After that you can do one of 3 things to choose which master is applied to the slide:
    1. Choose one from the Masters button on the toolbar
    2. Drag a master from *Master Slide* area in the slide viewer onto the newly created slide in the Slides area
    3. In the Slide tab of the inspector, under Appearance choose a master from the list of thumbnails

  • Master Slide templates are not showing correctly once out of film view

I am having problems with the master view edit within captivate. I have correctly adjusted the slides to fit the design I want, however when I add a new slide with that layout the buttons and boxes are throw all over the place. As well, a lot of the objects I would like to delete in the quiz pages can not be deleted and when trying to change the text for the default correct, must answer questions box..etc I am not able to change this text.

Hmmm, sorry about your frustration but as a daily user of Lynda.com for all kind of applications I find the Captivate courses much below their usual level. And I have commented that way on their site multiple times. There is no good practice, no explanation of proper workflows now about the logic of Captivate. You are not the first user that I helped out after such a 'bad' introduction. If you look at my answers, you'll see that I'm not that harsh usually. Having taught all kind of software applications since over 20 years, it is to me also very frustrating when I see this happening. And sorry, cannot help you with pointing to other tutorials, I never bought any book (had the same reflections when looking at books), nor trainings. I just learned by exploring and helping other users out.
Captivate is a very versatile tool, but learning curve is made unnecessary steep by bad approach in many tutorials. You'll learn recipes in them, nothing about the concept nor the logic. And once you want to change the recipe, you are stuck.
Do you know that in a theme you have theme color palette, object styles (did you ever use the Object Style Manager), master slides and a skin. The playbar is part of the skin. When you go to the skin editor, first tab allowed you to uncheck the playbar, go to the second tab 'Borders', and uncheck also the Borders.
Even terminology is a problem: what do you mean by a toolbar? There is for the moment in Captivate only a Big Button Bar in editing mode (Slides, Themes, Text, Shapes....). The real toolbar disappeared in CP8, was there in previous versions. There is an Align bar remaining, but it is not visible until you show it with the Window menu.
