Captivate Demonstrations & Simulations

Hi all,
Well, two weeks have gone by, and I'm 75% finished creating my first Captivate class!  Now, I'm running into a little bit of a problem.  I've recorded all my application screens (like in a movie), but I don't know if that's called a simulation or a demonstration.  I've also done all the audio, and I've put in my quiz at the end.  But now, I want to be able to add in interactivity, whereby the user has to do the clicking after just learning from my recordings and audio.  Is that a simulation or a demonstration or something else?  Can you give me some pointers on how to do this?
Also, to Rick, thank you so much for your book!  It's great, and you have been a lifesaver!
Sincerely,
Terri

Thanks Lilybiri,
I really do appreciate your full and comprehensive answers. I simply followed your directions to terri 'steps to be done:' and I must admit that the course came together very quickly. I had of course already spent time developing it in the other software first, which was Authorware.
After a few failed attempts with Captivate, which I thought were perfomance issuses but as you explained to me last week had more to do with my inefficient use of CP objects. I recreated the project in Authorware. I've been Producing CBT/WBT courses for almost 20 yrs using Authorware and Director, I then had to get my head around Flash, all this time attempting to learn/handle SCORM and deliver the courses in multitude of emerging LMS. About 10 years ago I got more into Project Management leaving the development side behind.
In my current role, I was brought in to update a clients existing Authorware courses into my Flash Templates I had. This was all going swimmingly until they also asked me to create some new courses for them. I looked at captivate and saw the many wonderful claims that it made and was sold on it. Particularly, their claim to: 'Import Microsoft PowerPoint files into Adobe Captivate 5.5 (they made the same claim for 5) and magically transform presentations into interactive eLearning content deliverable virtually anywhere'. I thought that this would lend itself to allowing the Lawyers here acting as Learning Designers to create their storyboards effectively in some PowerPoint templates.
All my courses are Interactive training of softskills, so not much IT simulation, but I have struggled with CP logic. Do we really need to be so conservative when building files using CP objects? I'm not sure if it's our servers here or the web conection in general but has anyone else had issues with rollovers not appearing for quite a while, or radio buttons not populating instantly when clicked upon?
I once spent a whole weekend working with a client, who did not have an LMS setting up the alternative reporting, only for it to work once and then never again. After extensive research of this issue I discovered that Adobes Official response was that, 'this doesn't work for eveyone'.
I have seen other peoples examples of CP files and I am impressed but I can't seem to grasp the concept. It is now getting very pressing as I may have to cut my loisses and re-develop the whole course ,18 Modules, in my very dependable flash templates - easily two weeks work.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Simpson

  • Adobe Captivate 5 Simulation package giving an error.

    Hi,
We are getting "Adobe® Captivate® has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." at the enf of recording in simulation feature. Strange part is we are getting this message after we create MSI through Adobe customisation tool.

    Hi there,
Can you try this and tell us whether it resolved the issue:
    1. Go to preferences dialog at Recording: FMR
    2. In the Working Folder, set 'C:\Test' - basically set the temp folder in your root directory.

  • Adding drag and drop to Captivate 3 simulations

    Hi,
I'm trying to design short simulation which involves moving
comments icons in a pdf file. Does anyone have any idea how this
drag-and-drop functionality could be built into a captivate
    simulation?
    Thanks

Captivate community contributor Paul Dewhurst offers a
drag-and-drop starter file on his website that you can use to build
    drag-and-drop interactions.
As Paul mentions on his site, you need to use a 3rd-party
tool to create the actual interaction, though.
You can find the file on Paul's website here:

  • Multiple captivate graded simulations in single SCO

    Hi All,
I have a situation where I need to create a single SCO Captivate course with multiple Assessment simulations and some assessment questions as well. As the the simulations are heavy, they are broken into multiple files. Each file will have its individual summary screen displaying the score. Is it possible to have a cumulative score of all the assessment simulations and the assessment questions at the end of the SCO?
    Regards
    Parag

Thanks Lilybiri for the reply. I did try Aggregator and SCORM packager but could not understand how can i get the score from (simulations)movie 1,2,3  in the last movie (summary). Is there any site where i can understand how to implement the said functionality?

  • Adobe Captivate 4 Simulation Project

I've been asked to use Adobe Captivate 4 to create a simulation of company software.
I understand how to use the simulation capabilities of Captivate, but this project can easily get extremely large.
I can picture hundreds of slides for one of the many processes.
Since we always try to keep our projects to 60 slides or less, I am not sure Captivate is the best choice.
Has anyone had experience with creating simulation projects with Captivate 4.
If so, are we truely limited to a given number of slides, etc?
Should I be exploring other software to create this project?
    Thank you,
    David Gambal
    TMG Health

    David,
Cp4 did seem to have some limits when it came to the number of slides it could handle, but I believe the actual number was well over 100.  Maybe someone else can chime in with their personal experiences, but I've used it to create simulation project with more than 100 slides without issue.  However if you were going for 200-400 slides then you might be in dicey territory.
If you were going to have to purchase another tool to do this anyway, why not just consider upgrading to Captivate 5.5?  I don't know of any other software simulation tool that does it better than Captivate.

  • Captivate 7 Simulation Recording Question

I'm using Captivate 7 to record a simulation requiring my learner to drag a message from one area and drop it into another. When I view the recording, all works well except the part where the learner is to actually drag and drop the message...that piece plays like a demo. Can a drag and drop simulation be recorded in Captivate 7 allowing the learner to drag the designated message to the designated area?

You will have to create that slide from scratch, could be done with the D&D
wizard. Dragging and scrolling during capture always results in FMR-slides.

  • Error when publishing Captivate 5 simulation to PDF.

    Hello,
I am getting some shadows of lines whenever I try to publish a simulation to a PDF file. When I publish to HTML everything looks good and when I preview in captivate, everything looks good. I have tried to change the quality from low bit all the way to 24bit and still the same results. I Have attached a photo of my problem. Please Help!

I'm getting the exact same problem when publishing. And my settings are all set to the highest quality output too.
I need to get an answer to this problem as soon as possible as clients are needing their end product looking as good as possible as quick as possible.
    Anyone with ideas?

  • Captivate 4 Simulation in Question Pool

    Hello all,
I have created quizes using some simulation slides.  One slide, click where type questions.
Example.  With one click, print the Excel spreadsheet.
I looked through the forum and have found nothing relating to putting simulation slides into a Question Pool.  I guess the first question is; is it possible.
Second question: if it is possible, how?
Does anyone have experience with this?
    Thanks in advance
    Terry Dicken

    Hi Terry
To my knowledge only Question Slides may be part of a Pool. As you are talking about Animations, my guess is that it won't be possible because of the way the developers have structured Captivate and the Question Pooling feature.
Perhaps others have a different viewpoint.

  • Captivate Software Simulation Audio Issues

My Captive 8 software simulation slides have been having issues with the audio right after recording. Before I even publish anything, my audio will end up being 2-3 slides ahead of where it should be on the slides. As you may know, when recording a software simulation, captivate automatically generates the slides with each mouse click and should automatically insert the correct audio on each slide. This is not happening for me, and it is very time consuming to fix. I either have to re-record and hope it doesn’t happen again or do a lot of external audio editing.
It’s possible there may not be a resolution and it may be a recognized (or unrecognized) bug in Captivate.  Just need to know whatever the case may be.
My initial gut reaction is to blame this on the latest Captivate 8 update… as I don’t remember experiencing this issue before.  But then again, I also upgraded my mac to OS X and that may be a factor as well.
I've had people suggest to add a blank ending to the audio to restart the audio timer on the next slide, as well as add a transparent highlight box at the end of the slide, but these are ways to fix it when the file is published. Since my issue is happening before publishing, I was hoping someone on this forum may have an answer.

PIP is available in Presenter Video Creator, not in the normal Presenter plug-in. It is not available in Captivate normal projects with extension cptx. You can insert a PIP in the TOC, but have to record it separately.
In Captivate HD Video Demo, extension cpvc (which is also a video creator with a dedicated video editor) you can insert a PIP in the editor. But again you have to create it separately.
The choice is up to you: an easy way to have both recordings together, with very limited editing possibilites in Presenter. Or the Captivate way, more work, better editor.
Afraid to repeat again: we are only talking about pure video now. In the normal Captivate files, that are based on slides, you can insert a video (like a PIP) and distribute it over slides, adapting the slide markers is available  in the Video menu. No webcam recording for the moment in Captivate.

  • What is the best way to save and share Captivate software simulation files in Connect?

File sizes (of 9mb zipped) appear to be causing problems. I've tried to share this short video any number of ways and I have not been successful.

Thank you. I have tried publishing directly to Connect and many other ways. I was able to upload a ppt converted SWF, so I know I can do it, but I'm not doing something correcly with the simulation, and I'm not sure what. I can add the file to my Content and it appears to want to upload in Connect, but I just get the wait screen and no controls to play the file. I've also aggregated the ppt SWF and the simulation SWF, and it won't recognize this either. I'm close, but I'm just missing something.

  • Interactive Captivate simulations not working correctly in Presenter

    Hi,
I'm looking for a fix for what appears to be a bug with
importing interactive Captivate 2.0.0 (build 1177, originally a
trial verson) files into Presenter 6.0.432 (in PowerPoint 2000 SP-3
9.0.8952 on a Windows XP computer).
The course works fine when I publish the Presenter file to My
Computer, but doesn't work correctly when I publish to Adobe
Connect (hosted version). What happens is that the interactive
Captivate simulations are already done. (It seems like Presenter is
somehow completing the simulations before the end user gets to
    those slides.)
Each course I've created is approximately 40 slides in length
with approximately eight Captivate demonstrations and eight
Captivate simulations spread out through the course. (A few slides
of content with voiceover, then a slide with a Captivate
demonstration, then a slide with a Captivate simulation slide, etc.
    etc.)
Captivate Project Preferences are set to:
    Advanced project compression
    508 compliance
    Compress compiled SWF file
    Publish Adobe Connect Enterprise metadata
    Captivate Publish settings are:
    (unchecked) Export HTML
    Flash Player 7
I tried switching the Flash Version to Flash Player 8, but it
didn't help at all, and instead caused an additional problem which
was that the text entry part of the interactive simulations stopped
    working altogether.
I'm inclined to think this is a problem with the Connect
server (since the course runs fine when published to My Computer,
just not when published to Adobe Connect), but suppose it could be
a Captivate or Presenter issue. In any case, I'm open to whatever
    gets it fixed.
    Thanks,
    Ruth

    Thanks Art,
I tried it, but it didn't help.
Given TechNote #46b77621 (recommending people link to
Captivate files rather than embed them in Presenter), and the
problems I'm having, I'm starting to wonder if this is a known
    problem.
If it is, it's a big one, as a major selling point of
Presenter has been that you can embed Captivate files within the
slides. Linking out to them would be a different experience for the
    end-user (and not as nice).
Another problem is that the TechNote says text entries won't
work in Captivate files embedded in Presenter (I have had some
inconsistent issues with this). Serious feature problem if it's
true. (As I'm sure you know, it's a very common aspect of computer
training courses, which is what many people are using
    Presenter/Captivate for.)
Hopefully this all gets sorted out sooner rather than later.
(Or you never know, perhaps, hopefully, there's just something I'm
    missing. :))
    Thanks,
    Ruth

  • Captivate 8 - how do I export or publish to PDF?

Captivate 8 - how do I export or publish to PDF?

Ahhh so you likely fell smitten with the new kid on the block. It's okay. We forgive you. We know how "cool" he is and all.
Lemme guess, in your editor you have a colored bar at the top? And that would mean that you created a new "Responsive" project. (Insert Ahhhhh, swoooon sound here)
PDF output isn't there for that project type as it's meant for copying to a web server for consumption on a variety of devices. If you want to publish to a PDF, you need to be using the Demonstration/Simulation project type. And sorry, there is no button or option to enable that goes "Poof" and now it's converted to that type. You will have to re-create the project.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Video demonstration shows OK by itself but very badly when inserted into the project

    Hello,
I have a problem with video demonstrations/simulations. When I record them, and convert into mp4 format they look great, but when I insert it into my Captivate Project the quality is too poor. One cannot even read the text Captions properly. I have tried to resize the video window, to load the flv file.. But useless. Can someone give me a hint about what might be wrong???
    Thank you!
    Paloma

    Hello there,
If I am right, you are inserting the published output (in .mp4) of Video demo into another Captivate project.
What output are you publishing from another project?
and is it a multi slide synchronized video or event video in the new project?
you can also check the quality of every slide under slide properties and increase that to 24 bit to improve the quality.
If you are publishing .swf, you can also go to edit >preferences>SWF size and quality>make that to custom and uncheck Advanced Project compression and compress SWF file.
    Please check whether that helps.
    Thanks.
