CAPTIVATE EXCHANGE - Alternative!

As anyone who has tried to upload to the Captivate Exchange would possibly know, sometimes they take a long time to approve your component and upload it for download/sale.
As an idea, i thought i would create this discussion and people who have created a widget and are waiting for it to be uploaded onto the Exchange, can also paste the link to their widget or component on this forum too. At least that way it will get some publicity while it sits in the unchecked files of the Adobe Exchange Q&A team
So if you've created a widget and you're uploading it onto the Adobe Exchange (or even if you're not), then paste the link to your site or blog or whatever here so people can see it.

I'll start...
Here is a widget i created for a 'Drag-able Progress Bar' in Captivate 5 and 5.5

  • Captivate Exchange - files not supported?

OK - today is my day to ask questions.
I tried downloading a few of the items in the Captivate
exchange (a design template, wallpaper, and a Jeopardy game).
When I try to open them in captivate, I get a message that
says "either the file type is not supported" or the file is
    corrupt.
I'm using Captivate (not Captivate 2). Any ideas?

    Hello
The Design Templates have been designed with, and are for,
Captivate 2. Sorry about that, but there is a good reason. They
demonstrate some of the new design features in Captivate 2, so
aren't backwards compatible with Captivate 1. As others have
suggested, downloading Captivate 2 and using the unzipped files in
    it should cure the problem.
The templates are called Design Templates because they
contain caption design elements that you can cut and paste between
your documents to make brand new designs. Or you could make a copy
of the whole file and delete unwanted pages from it - using those
    you like, unchanged.
Hope this helps. Just post again if you are still having
problems, and I'll check things out at the Exchange. When I last
checked everything seemed to be working ok. Good luck!
    Ali
PS On the Exchange download page, the Captivate version
number is given to the left of the date.

  • Is there a Adobe Captivate Exchange or Add-on Section

Is there a Adobe Captivate Exchange or Add-on Section that I am overlooking?
If there isn't an official Adobe section are there any suggested places?
Or are elearningtemplates.com and elearningart.com the only official places now?
    Thank you

    Hi there,
Currently I am not aware of an official Captivate or Add-ons Exchange directly from Adobe. We have worked with the Captivate team but it was felt that because Captivate is not a CC app it did not make sense within Add-ons. It is certainly worth asking he Captivate team via the Adobe Captivate forums however.
    Hope that helps.

  • Status of Captivate Exchange or Integration of Adobe Exchange Plug-in

I seem to remember a while back that there was discussion of reworking the Captivate Exchange, or maybe it was incorporating the Adobe Exchange plug-in into Captivate (I can't remember exactly) so that users could share themes, showcase projects, etc. Has there been any movement on that front? No one seems to use the classic Captivate Exchange anymore.

The Captivate Exchange is a sad sad place that doesn't get updated for months at a time and where you still get offered AS2 widgets, even though they won't work in any of the last 5 versions of Captivate.
Adobe has spoken about adding a new 'marketplace' similar to the Apple and Google Appstores.  Some other CC apps already have it.  So far Captivate does not.  Stay tuned...

  • Exchange alternative for Mac Snow Leopard Server

I was wondering what are some good alternatives to Microsoft's Exchange service for use in the new Snow Leopard Server that will be coming out. I am aware that Snow Leopard Server offers open source for mail server, but I would like to go with an actual GUI interface with a third party software. Any suggestions would be great!

You will not be able to do any extensive management of Active Directory from with Mac OS X natively,
and considering the technology, it's best managed using the native Microsoft tools & technologies anyway. There are products that offer options for Mac management from/via AD - beyond what Apple provides and/or is possible by extending your schema, but that's _another matter entirely_.
"Closest thing" is really for you to decide, you will need to investigate the products and if they will meet your needs.
As I have stated, what we know will be available in & via Snow Leopard is what Apple has made known on its own preview pages.
If you needed to seriously know more you would have invested in a ADC Developer account and extensive testing but with the understanding you would be dealing with pre-release technology.
Past that, the two products that offer the most in terms of feature-set(s) are as I already noted:
    Kerio
    and
    Zimbra.
    Best of luck !

  • Use Mountain Lion server (Mail) as a Microsoft Exchange alternative?

    Dear community,
I googled for this question (see topic) and I found some threads (also on the Apple Support Communities) of people asking the same question, rather they mention Lion server and not Mountain Lion server. When I look at some reactions to those questions I see replies saying that you should only use the Mail server in small scenarios (30 - 50 people) and some say it would be wiser to stick with Microsoft Exchange.
I am wondering if you guys think about this the same way. I work for a school with roughly 1500 users and 400 employees. So that's approximately 2k useraccounts / mailaccounts. I'm sure I want to get rid of MS Exchange for various reasons, should I give the Mail server a try or should I search for alternatives?
    Kind regards, John

    John,
    you really can't compare Apple(s) with ... well Microsoft(s).
It is not up to the number of users, as Mark23 already said, because postfix will be capable of handling more mails than your users will produce any day. Rather it is up to what you expect to get. Exchange can deliver you more services, workflow integration and user experience than postfix/dovecot/calendar/address book (of cause you have to pay a price!). But what do you need?
Just mail? Shared calendars or address books?
Maybe you are looking that way just to get mail. Do you need kerberized services? Are your users mainly using Mail app? Do you want the simple configuation interface that comes with OS X server instead of standard files? Then go with OS X Server. Otherwise you might consider a linux box with postfix and dovecot.
But it's all up to your requirements.

  • Feedback on Captivate as alternative to Authorware, or suggestions for better alternative?

    Hi -
I've been using Authorware for a number of years to create questionnaires for research studies...and I'm glad it still works on Windows 7 and we're going to test our applications on a Windows-based tablet soon.
But I know I will need to find a new solution for a development tool as technology moves forward.
I've seen suggestions to head towards Captivate.  We purchased a copy and I've been testing it.
I'm learning that Captivate does not support arrays, and will only support a limited number of user-defined variables (although I haven't received a clear answer as to the exact number....but the estimates I was given were really small).  In Authorware, we've created systems that use 3000+ variables using arrays and have had no problems.
From the Captivate forum, I'm learning that it appears that there is not a simple way to export data to a text file on the computer (like Authorware's WriteExtFile and AppendExtFile).  I'm told I need to have an internet connection, and set up a LMS (learning management system).
Our projects are research studies, so we're not grading or scoring...we just need to capture the answers that people provide and write that data to a text file.
Two different people suggested that SurveyMonkey would be the better option.
We would prefer a solution that allows for the creation of a standalone executable file with a nice graphical user interface, audio, easy data handling, and not be required to have an internet connection, etc.
As Authorware users, would any of you have a suggestion for an Adobe (or other) product?  Or should I just learn Captivate and grow with it and hope some better features are added in the future?
    Thanks!
    Scott

Yeah, it'll be a while, I think, before CP is anywhere close to the capabilties of Authorware. If you want the 'ease' of Captivate, you likely have to rethink how your product will work. Overall, filesystem access is going to be a challenge - very little software seems to allow that these days, and understandably so considering security issues.
Lectora may be the best more for you, all that said. I'm not positive they allow filesystem access (write text files) but I think so. It's also not Flash-based, so if you do want to move to mobile delivery without Flash plugin support issues, well, there ya go.
On the other hand, I believe Adobe's AIR product (method of bundling a Flash application for local playback) may now allow filesystem access, so if you can pick up Flash or Flex, publishing to an AIR application may be an option.
OR you could try to get a Flash Widget made that you insert into CP to handle the text file writing, though that doesn't get you around the custom variable limit...
...BUT do note that CP can call JS functions in the parent HTML window, so you might be able to do what you want, as far as variables go, by creating the functions, values, etc. in JS then have CP call those functions...?
All that said, Xerte may be a good option for you. It's got quite an underground (i.e. quiet) following:
    http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/
It's designed to be an Authorware replacement in design and form, though I've not touched it in years so have no idea how far it's progressed (the support listserve is pretty active though).
    And it's free...!

  • Inserting a 2 page word document - captivate 4

    Hello All,
I have created an eLearning module for a client, and they are requesting i attach or insert their Terms and Conditions of Use document to the module, which will have to be printed and signed by their users.  It's a 2 page word document with a ton of information on it.  Anyone have any input or ideas for me?
Linking isn't really going to be an option for me...This is something i'm going to have to embed in the module.
It looks like someone asked for help with something like this years ago and didn't get anywhere.  Hope you guys can hook me up.
    Thanks!

There isn't really any good way to insert a two page word document into a Captivate project to be honest. The best way would be to convert it to a PDF and have it open in a new window when the user clicks a button in Captivate.
Alternatively you could use a widget that allows you to insert a large text and use scroll bars to navigate the content. Chris Dorna create a widget like that - http://www.dorna.nl/?p=338 - but putting a two page document into this would be a disaster seen from an instructional design perspective. Also I have no clue on how to get it printed and signed.
In my view the best solution would be to break up the two pages into more accessible chunks of information over several slides. On the last slide of this text you can have the user "digitally" sign that they read and understood it and then have a widget send an email to the HR department or relevant person that would recieve the regular printed copies. Of course it would require a custom widget and also access to either PHP or ASP on the server where the content is being delivered from.

  • Behind the Scenes in Captivate 2

I'm creating an application where I ask the user to enter
comments in a text entry box. What I want to be able to do is save
whatever they type in the text box and display it in a later slide
so they can compare their comments to an "expert's" assessment.
When I was at a learning conference, I heard some Captivate
users refer to going "behind the scenes" to make changes to
Captivate. Is that what I need to do here? Any suggestions?

See "Text Input/Output" by Silke Fleischer, posted on the

  • Captivate 3 - zoom - transition - resize

Can I make an selection in an slide and make an zoom-in
function of for instance an button or some part of the scene ?
Can I make transition effect between my slides ?
    If I record on full screen (1024 x 768 ) can I resize the
whole project to 800 x 640 ?ot other size

    Hi steenmikkelsen
For transitions, it will depend on your Captivate version.
    Versions 1 and 2 had a few. Maybe 3 or 4. Captivate 3 has 10. If
you wish to see them all in action, I've got a download up on the
Captivate Exchange that will show them to you. You may visit the
    Exchange by
    clicking
here. My gizmo is called "Captivate Transition Chooser".
For the zooming effect, there is a Zoom Area tool that
appeared in version 2. So you will need to have version 2 or 3 to
have it available. Basically, you click Iinsert > Zoom area and
get two objects on your slide. One is the zoom area and one is the
zoom destination. Position the zoom area over the area you wish to
magnify. Place and size the zoom destination where you wish to
display what you are "zooming up". The difference in size between
these two areas controls the magnification level. The larger the
difference, the more magnified the area becomes. There is also an
option for displaying an image as the zoom destination. So, you
might have an image of the area at full size, then a smaller image
on the slide where you simply wish to zoom up and show the larger
area in a much clearer manner.
You can scale a project down from a larger resolution to a
smaller one, but keep in mind that at the end of the day when all
is said and done, Captivate projects use bitmapped images. Any
scaling down will result in a loss of quality. This is because you
are taking bitmaps and pushing the picture elements (pixels)
together. Things look "fuzzy" and no longer as clear as they
originally did. So it's a trade off. To do this, click Project >
    Resize Project...

  • FRAME AROUND A CAPTIVATE MOVIE

Hi, I've been asked to produce a number of training movies in
Captivate for my client to put on a VLE. So far the subjects (from
beginner to advanced) are Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
While I find Captivate easy enough, I'd like to have a themed
"frame" around each movie. I'm shooting in 800 x
600 and the frame could sit around all four sides with the control
bar at the bottom, a couple of narrow sides and the topic &
a bit of artwork in the top border.
I'm good in all the graphics packages, but if coding is the
only solution send it anyway and I'll get our techies to look at
    it.
    Many thanks.

    Hi ploughman1
You might wish to simply try using one of the skins supplied
with Captivate. (Project * Skin * Borders tab) There are many
background patterns already supplied by Captivate, and of course
you are welcome to create your own if you aren't totally pleased
    with what you see there.
I've got a *Border Chooser* Captivate movie I have uploaded
to the Captivate Exchange that you may be interested in. I'll try
and place a link here, but I'm not optimistic since the last forum
    upgrade.

  • Rearrange Playback buttons

I am looking to find a way to change the order of the
playback button so I can customize the look of the playback. Do
anyone know of a way to do that. i am able to change to the look of
the buttons but not the order.

    Hi Michael,
What you want - specifically - cannot be done within
Captivate. obviously, you have found the
Project > Skin dialog at which you can select which
buttons you wish to display on the playback control. And you know
that in the same dialog, you can change the playback control style
    and colors.
The one thing you cannot do is what you are asking to do. The
order of the buttons on the playbar cannot be changed without
altering the SWF for the playback control itself in Flash. That
does not mean it cannot be done, only that you will have to do it
as a Flash project, and to my knowledge, there is no playbar FLA*
(*Flash source file) included in Captivate.
    EDIT:
I stand corrected about the lack of a FLA. See the posts above
for the location on your Windows system install. Sorry I missed
    that earlier.
    If you
are comfortable in the Flash environment, give it a shot,
and place your resulting SWF file in the \\Adobe Captivate 3\
Gallery\ PlaybackControls\ SWFbars\ folder to access it from within
    Captivate. If you are
not comfortable in creating Flash objects, you will have to
pay someone who is, to create the playbar for you.
To get you started, I recommend you check out the work of
Paul Dewhurst, a Captivate Community Expert who does do some custom
work for others, and also generously makes some of his work
available free on his Captivate widgets web-site ... located
    this link right here
and named "Raising Aimee" after his daughter. You might also
want to check out the stuff available on the Captivate Exchange
    located

    Good luck!

  • Exporting to one .swf when including other swf animations

    Hi
When exporting my project to flash, three files are created.
I am not using any skins etc, I am just trying to incorporate two
animations (one per slide) and finish with one overall .swf file.
I have managed to do this in two other slides, though! Which
    is most frustrating!
    So just to reiterate:
When I publish the file, the two animations I am using are
exported again along with the rest of the publication. So I have
the main swf, which calls in the other two .swf animations when
required. I need to have just one file as a result.
    Please help!!

    Welcome to our community, t1mmie
Are you referring to the supplied animations? (Arrows,
    Highlights, etc)
If so, there are a few that refuse to embed. For those, you
need to edit the source files in Flash and export from Flash as
Flash 6 format. Once you get them in Flash 6 format, add them again
    and they should embed.
You may download the source files for animations that don't
have the source from the Captivate Exchange.
