Captivate File Sizing

Has anyone run into this one?
I make an exact copy of a Captivate project file in My
Documents. Both file sizes are the same.
I open the copy in Captivate and delete three slides. I also
go into the library and delete unused objects.
I save the project and find that the new project, with three
less slides, is BIGGER than the original project!!
This is driving me NUTS! I've got a finite amount of server
space to share these on and Captivate seems to just increase file
sizes at will! I've had a couple of projects that double in size
for no apparent reason.
I'm not working across a network, the files are on my desktop
hard drive.
Anyone know of a work around or fix?
Thanks
(Going crazy in Las Vegas)
Jimmy

This is possible the most frequent post to this site. You can
do a Search and get lots of possible answers.
It is a bug. I recently posted this to the bug site.
Adobe-India got back to me and I sent them a project to prove the
point that you are making. I also proved that importing a Quiz set
will BLOAT the project because you get the entire project with the
Quiz sets (the are just not visible). I was happy that they said
that they see the issue. I was SHOCKED that they said that, given
that this bug has been there for years. I cannot believe that I'm
the only person that reported this and sent them mockups.
But the good news is that they see the problem.
My Biggest (make that HUGE) complaint about Adobe is the lack
of patches. Every major software vendor does service packs about
quarterly. Adobe will patch Acrobat as needed. But the lesser known
projects get nothing. BUGS need to be eliminated in patches, not in
upgrades. We should ALL complain.
I would like to buy 1 share of Adobe stock and show up at the
Directors meeting and let the world know how much they ignore the
support for the smaller products. "Mr. Director... I use Adobe
Captivate and it has tons of bugs that have been in it for years.
Could you explain why the support at Adobe Systems is so bad? Mr.
Director, I use Adobe Captivate and there are tons of bugs and no
service packs for the last three releases, can you explain why
Adobe Systems has no patch policy?"
They can do WAY-WAY better and they can patch the problems
without adding new features.
On the other hand, I have been in contact with the developers
in India on a variety of issues lately and they are listening to my
comments, they are seeing the bugs that I point out to them and
perhaps the next expensive version of Adobe Captivate and Adobe
Presenter will get it right? Maybe? But I would like to see patches
for what is broken, it's what others do, so why not Adobe Systems?
Why?

  • Need to edit a Captivate file that won't open. Can the SWF be edited?

We are currently using Adobe eLearning Suite 2 (Cp5).
We have 2 older Captivate files (Cp 3 or 4) that will not open; they act like they're opening but eventually they just time out without the error message that you normally get with a corrupt file.
So all we have access to are the SWFs & zip files that were uploaded into our LMS.
We are switching to a different LMS and need to quickly make an edit to these files before they are uploaded to the new LMS.
Is it possible to edit the SWF (delete about 30 seconds of content off the end of each file) and still have them function as far as registering completion? And if so, what program would I need?

Sorry, but only Adobe can speculate as to why the older files refuse to open in the newer version. Phase of the moon? Jupiter aligning with Mars while the house of the Moon is in retrograde?
Personally, I'm going with the Mass Coronal Ejection theory!
Assuming there is really no interaction going on, you *MIGHT* be able to fudge things to get that last 30 seconds to go away by playing the SWF and using Captivate to record the SWF as it plays.

When the Captivate file was published, I selected the "Export

    Hi divertida73
Looks like you may be neglecting to include a very important
    file. Its name?
    standard.js
Try adding that one to the mix and see if you don't fare

  • Unable to Load Captivate files to Creative Cloud

We have several captivate files that that for whatever reason we are unable to upload to creative cloud.  We have tried from both Macs and PCs and receive the same message.  "A virus was detected in Filename. This file will not be uploaded."   They function in every respect in both cp7 and cp8.  We have scanned them with mac and pc virus scanners.  I can remove all the contents of the file and it still fails.
If I copy out all the slides to a new file, the file loads to cc. There is a lot of master template and advanced actions that would be lost if we have to port out the slides. This is not a great solution.
Can anyone suggest possible causes or remedies?  My hope this there is some resource missing or corrupted in the file structure and that can be repaired.
    Thanks for your attention.

    Warner,
The only virus detection program that I found that recognizes this virus is ClamWin (Free Antivirus for Windows - Open source GPL virus scanner) I used it to scan the text animation swf files ( installed with my Adobe Captivate 8 64 bit program files. Below is the report. I hope this helps someone at Adobe to find and fix the issue as soon as possible. Since I now know there is a virus on my system, I really need a fix as soon as possible. What I read about this virus is that "it will be used as a backdoor to spread more malware, malicious, and other Trojan virus... usually monitors internet browsing activity and collects confidential information of the victims and then sends them to Cybercriminals...."
Here are the results of my program directory scan. As you can see not all text animations are impacted but many are.

  • Problem using captivate file in a flash file

    Hi,
I am using a captivate file inside a flashfile.
I am experiencing the following problem.
I have a button in a layer above the captivate file. But when
I click that button the button and the captivate file react.
How is this possible, and how can I resolve this?

    I don't understand your question.
You 'click a button and the button and the captivate file
    react'.
    What does that mean?
A bit more clarity in exactly what is happening may help
    diagnose the
    problem (no promises!).

  • Passing variables from web server to HTML5 Captivate File

I am publishing a Captivate quiz as HTML5 and hosting them on a website. I would like to know how I can pass data from my site to the HTML5 based Captivate quiz.
So far I have had success getting data out of captivate by having the file POST the results of a finished quiz to a RESTful route. However, I have not had success putting data into the file. I would like to pass information such as User ids and quiz ids, maybe even current slide position so that I can associate the quiz information with my database. I am not specifically looking for a solution to user ids, quiz ids, etc. because I can get creative in that regard, I just want to know if others have been able to set variables on Captivate file load.
I have tried a setting variables in a couple ways:
    - Declaring the variables with javascript, then ajax loading the page into a div. This caused dependency issues since the captivate file uses relative paths for its assets folder.
    - Modifying the published html file by adding the javascript variables, this returned an error message saying I cannot override the existing captivate variables
    - Adding the js variables into the init function, this had no effect.

To simply pass the username and an id I used the following.
Note the URL has query string parameters that match the captivate variables
    http://mywebsite/Course/index.html?cpQuizInfoStudentID=IDHere&cpQuizInfoStudentName=Studen tNameHere
Another way to do this to use JavaScript to read the query string, and the assign variable in CP to the query string values. I remember reading some more detail, but cant remember where.
    Hope it helps

  • Captivate file won't open

Has anyone ever had an issue where the Captivate file will
not open? In my case, the program generates the following error:
"Exception EParserError in module converter.dll at 0002B53E"
I've tried opening this projects on 2 different computers
using Captivate version 1 and 3. The error get's thrown in version
    1. In version 3, it just crashes as it tries to convert and re-save
the project in a new version.

    Hi there
    Seeking an answer isn't rude.
What we don't like to see is when someone pops into the forums and begins posting the same issue in many different places in the hopes of getting a fast answer. When this happens we end up having to delete the repeated threads so that the question is only asked in a single location. That way any answer will hopefully be provided in the same location and others that come looking later will actually find an answer.
Sometimes Captivate files become corrupt. The reasons a project may corrupt vary. But generally speaking, the following are some guidelines:
Projects may corrupt if working with them while they are stored on a network drive. Captivate likes it better when the project is on the local PC.
Projects may corrupt if they are too large. 50-65 slides should be considered your upper limit.
Projects may corrupt if your PC is struggling with sufficient resources. Close down as many applications as you can to free up resources.

  • Other problems with loading Captivate files into Flash AS3 project

I have a Captivate file done with Captivate 3, published to
Flash player 9 that is being loaded into Flash AS3. The captivate
is a simple recording of some mouse clicks in a browser. I am
displaying the playbar along the bottom, and its buttons all work
fine except for the progress bar, where you can drag the knob and
scrub back & forth in your presentation.
This progress bar is not working as it should. I see the
mouse cursor change to a hand, but when I click I cannot drag the
knob to control the progress bar. The other buttons in the playbar
do work (replay, pause, play, back, forward).
This is a unique problem in that it is only happening when
viewed in IE (7) when loaded into my Flash AS3 project. When viewed
in Firefox in my project, or as a standalone SWF, or as a SWF
simply embedded onto a plain HTML page, it works just fine.
    Does anybody have any insight?
Another thing I notice with loading Captivate files with AS3
is the the amount of output messages it displays. Rather annoying
(unless this is a "feature" I've yet to be aware of - heh)

    Hi,
I know exactly how you feel, there is simple answer; replace
Captivate for Camtasia Studio 5 at techsmith.com. The weight on
those shoulders will be gone! You'll smile more, be more
    socialable. One Happy Person.
I am very happy person ;)

  • Flash animation doesn't work when I publish Captivate file

    Hi,
I have an e-learning developed by a third party using Captivate 6, they've inserted animations (swf files) created using Flash CS6. When I try publishing the Captivate file on my computer all the animations work well except for a particular one (a wheel that spins and asks questions).
When I publish the Captivate file and go to that particular slide and click anywhere other than this animation the whole thing freezes (this doesn't happen on other slides with the other animation/quizzes developed using Flash CS6 on the same project). However, when the developer publishes the same file on their machine it works well.
I don't have Flash CS6 installed on my machine (I only have Flash CS4 and can't open the animation/swf files), I asked someone else (that had Flash CS6) to try publishing the Captivate file and had the same issue I had.
Has anyone had this issue before? how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

Since you are loading another SWF file into your main root timeline and want to transfer control to the loaded SWF you need to call _lockroot on the container that holds the loaded content since you are using _root. Like this:
    myMCLMain.loadClip("flashSite.swf", "container2");
container2._lockroot = true; //Add this line after loadClip
Or you can remove the _root in the loaded SWF.

  • Flash 10,1,102,64 causes captivate files to display black screen

I noticed when we upgraded our computers to flash 10,1,102,64 it broke ALL of our captivate files. I called adobe tech support and they were worthless.. it doesn't seem to happen with the previous version of flash. When the Captivate lesson starts, it simply cuts right to a black screen... fortunately I figured out the solution.. so I'm sharing the knowledge.
The problem appears to be with ANY animated slide with animated text. The only solution I found was to remove animtated text and replace it with a static gif or jpg. Hopefully, the info is useful to any other frustrated users

So how does it work then for people who downgraded to the previous version of Flash?  Should we still install the new .dll?  Will the next Flash Player have this fixed in it?  Just curious what you would recommend for the scenario where the current player isn't installed.
Thanks for the update and fixing the issue.

  • Captivate File Too Large on Website

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to using Adobe Captivate and am wondering if anyone can offer any suggestions on how to compress an Adobe Captivate file for a website.
Specifically, I am referring to the Adobe Captivate file on this website link: http://www.crawfordtech.com/news-events/transpromo-webinar
As you'll see, it takes a while to load.
How can I make it smaller so as to lessen download time? Can I do this in Captivate? If not, what software can I use for this kind of compression.
    Thanks kindly,
    Jamie

    Hello,
Could you give some details about the size of this project, as well for the CP-file as for the SWF (which is published). And how many slides? Mostly it is recommended to limit the number of slides to 60. When not adding audio I successfully could have CP-files up to 120 slides. And what was the resolution of the captures? Try to capture at the minimum resolution: if you use 1280x1024 the files will be much larger than at 800x600.
What were your settings when publishing, especially for SWF quality and (if necessary) for audio compression?
You can also divide a large project in different projects and chain them together with Aggregator (CP4 only) or by daisy chaining.

  • Load limitations for Captivate Files in RoboHelp?

We are investigating RoboHelp 9 as a solution for an upcoming help project that would involve a large number of Captivate demos (approximately 70) ranging in size from 1 - 5MB. Has anyone run into issues using large numbers of Captivate files in a RoboHelp project? Is there a maximum file size for Captivate demos in RoboHelp? Any other issues? I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone with experience in this area.

    Welcome to our community
There really shouldn't be any load limitations other than those imposed by the Captivate files themselves. My guess is that you plan on using WebHelp, no? And if you are, the Captivate demos will be loaded as needed from the server. So the only lag you will see is the delay for what it takes for the server to serve up the demo itself.
Hopefully this answers your question. If not, post back and we will take another stab at it.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Can you embed video/audio in a captivate file?

i was wondering if it's possible to somehow embed video/audio files in a captivate slideshow so that no sidecar files are required?
or will i always need to keep seperate linked mp3 and flv files along side the captivate file?
    thanks!

okay thanks shekhar for you reply : ) i don't have much experience with captivate, only flash.
i think i've figured out that when inserting an audio file (e.g. .wav) the file is actually embedded in the cptx file, meaning you don't need the .wav file as a seperate file (like for example the way linked files in indesign work).
however, for video files, i still don't know if it works the same way. are the files embedded? or linked?
let me put it this way: if i have a captivate file that has video and audio in it and i want to move the project to a different computer - do i need to take only the cptx file? or do i need to also move some media files as well?
    thanks

  • Captivate Files Loaded on Web Server

I have loaded a captivate file (along with all its dependent files) onto a web server in order to link it to our Plateau LMS.  I had no problem with the link, but a narration that is supposed to start later in the file begins when the main Captivate page is opened.  I am not the creator of the Captivate file and have never worked with the program.  Is there something that needs to be done to the file to keep it from doing this?

Are you using Aggregator? Or is is a very long project? I've noticed Aggregator projects often want to jump into the audio while the presentation is still loading. The easiest fix for that is via Edit --> Preferences. Select Start and End in the Project group, uncheck Auto Play, and, as a touch of class, add a graphic to be displayed until the user presses the play button (which will be in the middle of the presentation when it loads).
