Captivate files open, but don't display

When I open a Captivate file, the status bar shows the file
opening but the storyboard with the slides never shows up;
therefore, I cannot edit anything. When I close the program though,
it asks me whether I want to save the changes I made to the file.
Captivate seems to open the file, but I cannot get the
editing screens to appear!
Anyone have any ideas of what to do? I'm thinking these files
are corrupted...

Hi kpin and welcome to our community
Where is your .CP file stored when you try to open it? Is it
on a network drive? If so, this is likely your issue. Move the file
locally to your C drive.
You say "Captivate seems to open the file, but I cannot get
the editing screens to appear!". Well, if this is the case, are you
then able to click File > Save As? If so, maybe you can recover
by saving as a different file name.

Mac version. I have Captivate 5.5. I was working on a file, but later when I went to open it, the file opens (showing the x-+ like the file window is there), but the file is invisible. I deleted and reinstalled Captivate, but no luck. I do not get any error messages. The same Captivate file opens fine on my other Mac computer.

Did you try re-create the preferences?
if not try these steps.
At the top click on Go>Go to Folder
type ~/Library
Go to Prefernces folder> Rename Adobe Captivate folder.
Try launch the Captivate and see if that helps.

My Contacts program opens but doesn't display on the screen (it appears to be off above the top right hand corner).

Launch Contacts, then on the "Window" menu select "Zoom". That should maximise the window and give you access to the bottom-right corner where you can resize it, and the bar at the top which you can drag around.

Can write in the Selection screen statement with the syntax as

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

New topics are compiled in but don't display when help button is pressed

I'm using RoboHelp HTML Build 6. I am the only writer who uses RH and have been using this build for 2 years or so.
I recently got a new map file from the developer containing 2 new map IDs. I used the same steps to import the map file, create the new topics, and map them to the new map IDs that I have been using for years. But when I compiled RH and pasted the chm into the application folder, those 2 new topics don't display when the help button is clicked on the dialog box to which they are mapped.
When I generate the chm I can look at the output at the bottom of RH project view and see that that the 2 new htm files are being compiled into the RH project. I can also see them if I open the generated chm and go into the TOC and click on a link to them.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried redoing the usual procedure (see below) for the importing and mapping from scratch several times. I have also tried BugHunter (see below).
Procedure for Importing and Mapping (this time the help for all the older dialog boxes works but not for the 2 new ones)
1. Open the new map (.hm) file from the developer and add #define followed by a space to each entry beginnng with the string HID in the new map file (I don't know why but nothing works unless I do this.)
2. Delete the old map file from the RH project.
3. In Windows Explorer, copy the new .hm file into the RH project folder.
4.In Project Manager view, open Context-Sensitive Help. Right-click on Map Files. Select Import. Browse and select the new map file.
6. Map the new topics using File, Edit Map IDs.
7. Generate the .chm and pasted it into the application where it always goes.
BugHunter Procedures and Results
I first tried the Test HTML Help API dialog.
I specified the .CHM file I compiled and tested both options:
--HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC: I put in the name of the new help (htm) file and its relative path and clicked Help. Nothing happened.
--HH_HELP_CONTEXT: I put in the Map Number for the new dialog box and clicked Help. The new help topic I had created displayed.
I also used the Tools tab in BugHunter to do a CSH (context sensitive help) Test. I identified the chm file and opened it and put in a new map number, then clicked Show Help. Nothing happened.

On the surface it sounds like you have done everything correctly so it should just be a case of going back and double checking that you have the correct CHM, that the mapid is exactly the same as in the app and that the app has been updated.

Since the most recent update, any previously made captivate files we republish won't display

(skip to "I'll break down the problem as best as i can" to avoid rant )
Essentially, we have near a hundred eLearning courses we have made using captivate dating back as early as captivate 4. We have been upgrading through the versions as we go and where there has always been little glitches that present themselves this one makes the list sense. This isn't even an upgrade in version, just a little patch (that seemed to add the ability to resize the "Question X of Y" bits on question slides).
So, does anyone have any help on this problem? Adobe have been so far not very helpful, essentially offering the wisdom and clarity that comes with years of not trying to fix problems. Their advice being to basically remake each course from the ground up, something that will take a LOT of time (and for what!? to fix their mistake?).
I'll break down the problem as best as i can:
Since recent patch to captivate, pre-existing files that we publish again will not display on windows computers but does display on Ipad's, etc. Uploading to a server does not fix the problem, it remains the same. The internet window opens up the same as normal but after a brief loading bar moment, the window remains blank. A check of the code shows that the files are being loaded but simply not displaying in any form. If we publish a completely new file, it displays fine. The type of browser has no impact on the problem. We have also found that if we go into the console and use a command to skip to, say, the second frame, it works!? So the issue literally seems to be with displaying in the first place.
Thanks in advance if anyone can even help suggest ways to get round this problem, it has come at a terrible time when we need to make changes and present material to another company but can't even view our publishes files.

The most recent update (to Captivate 7.0.1.237) changed the default autoplay setting for all of our courses to on. Since we haven't changed any settings personally it was easy overlooked, and the autoplay function just doesn't seem to work.
I tried running cpCmndGotoSlide = 2 in the web developer console and it caused the course to start up, making me realise that the course was indeed loading (I saw that some of the content was loading on firebug but was unsure as to if it was the crucial files) but just not playing and I noticed while investigating that.
So its just a case of turning off autoplay for the course in the publish settings.
Also as a note our courses were still working on iPad, I think this is due to apple products not supporting the autoplay of content, especially if it has audio.

I accidentally added two .doc files, they show in iTunes file sharing, but don't show on iPad?

I accidentally added two .doc files by dragging and dropping into itunes, under my device, then the app tab, then file sharing for Adobe Reader, they show in iTunes file sharing window, but don't show on iPad 3, and I cannot delete them on iTunes screen? Please help!

First, I would advise you to apply Tao philosophy to this. Given the dysfunction of most software, if this was just an accidental copy and you don't want them on iPad and they are not showing up anyway, what's the problem? Forget it. It's not worth the hassles. I'm more concerned that you have psychological issues you need to be dealing with, not this. You are making much too unnecessary work and stress for yourself.
As for deleting them, I'm assuming you highlighted them and hit delete and it didn't work. If not, it should. Works for me. But if it doesn't, my advice is also not to worry about it, as annoying as the clutter is. It will eventually resolve itself (like when your data files corrupt or your iPad crashes, LOL. (I apologize for my cynicism but I am fed up with dysfunctional software). It's not worth the hassles of trying to figure out petty issues.
As for me, I have the opposite, and very serious problem. I've got Reader on my iPad too. But I can't move the pdfs out of it and onto my laptop with iTunes' dysfunctional file sharing. I get the error "file cannot be copied because you do not have permission to see its contents." I have hundreds of pdfs on my iPad that I converted from web surfing with other programs that also don't work and I can't get them off the iPad for backup and to have a synced library I can access from both laptop and iPad.
I called iTunes twice and both times they blamed it on the app, saying iTunes file sharing doesn't support third party apps and that I should call Adobe and talk them into writing the code that will work with iTunes. Yeah, right. And Reader is not the only problem. This is happening with iAnnotate and Write PDF and other apps.
I suspect that both of us have the root problem, perhaps Apple's greedy refusal to support the apps that it sells in the app store and are quasi-integrated enough to show up in the file sharing documents list, but can't be moved or deleted; and the apps that don't bother to make their apps fully work with iTunes file sharing.
If anyone has any solutions ......

PS CS5.1 crashes when using file open but not with bridge or "open as smart object"

I'm using a Mac with Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS5.1 Extended
When i try to open a file largen than ~50MB with double click in finder or with file>open in PS, the program loads the psd and shows it, then 2-3 seconds later PS crashes. If the psd is under ~50MB everything is fine.
If i open it with file>open as smart object or via the mini bridge, everything is fine, and i can work with it.
How can this be fixed?

.m4r files sync but don't appear AND outlook contacts won't add to iphone?

hi guys,
This is my first post, made just a day after I got my iphone.
Now don't get me wrong, i love the iphone, but i'm worried i might have to send it back due to 2 glitches:
1) I exported all my contacts onto my computer from my old k800i, then imported them into contacts on outlook. Then I synced my iphone to outlook through itunes and it appears to be doing something on the itunes bar only for me to open my phone when it's done and the contact list is empty. It's synced the calender and itunes music thought.
2) I sent some ringtones to my friend who has a mac (I have a PC) and he changed them to .m4r files on that garage program on the mac, then he sent them back, i dragged them into the ringtone folder and they appeared. I went on itunes and they appear in the iphone tone menu, i sync with the actual phone and after saying it's done they don't appear in the tone menu on the phone.
That's 2 annoying things, do I need to send it back?
Any help would be great, thanks for your time.

Please follow the steps below to make sure the reminders have been enabled in Outlook:
On the File tab, click Options.
Select Advanced in the Outlook Options dialog box.
In the Reminders section, select Show reminders.
Click OK.

AS3 - Font Loads but don't display... what might be happening?

I'm trying to load a custom font to use at runtime in AS3.
The code seems to work but the font is not displayed properly.
Could you point what I'm missing?

Finder Open But Won't Display

Somehow managed to drag my Finder window for a specific folder onto the desktop (probably this crazy sensitive mouse) and now Finder won't display or close it (I can minimize it). I can only access Finder with browse and save commands, not by manually accessing the Finder icon on the dock or in the toolbar. I use Finder a lot but am on a new iMac and don't quite know my way around the updated OS yet.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Ical opens but the month displayed is Feb, not march.What Happened?

The details in FEb are for March It's as if the set up has shiffted but not the stuff I've wrtten in so the whole year is screwed up. I've been having trouble shiffting views and it was quitting on me. Sent in lots of reports but now this is just stuck a month out of sync so to speak....Help...

Have you tried deleting iCal's preference file? Go to your user's Library > Preferences and delete the file 'com.apple.iCal.plist'.
I'd probably also try repairing permissions. Open Disk Utility (which is in Applcations > Utilities), click on your startup disk and click 'Repair Disk Permissions'.
Post back if these don't help.

SVGs display locally, but don't display live online...

Hi guys,
Thanks in advance for your help in diagnosing and fixing! Over the past few days, been giving my portfolio site a long overdue rebuild; coincidentally just as Adobe introduced SVG support in Muse, which I wanted to / intend to take full advantage of.
Here's what I'm trying to work through:
- Initially I was saving vector work right out of Illustrator as an SVG -- tightly cropping the artboard, saving as an SVG, and placing into Muse. This placing into Muse worked fine at first, but then some weird behavior started, where the bounding box around the SVG in Muse was way wider / taller than the graphic itself, even though I had saved it out with a tightly cropped artboard. (i.e., the tight boundaries stopped carrying over to Muse.)
- So, then as alternate way of doing it, I started to select / copy the graphic in Illustrator, and paste directly into Muse...this worked great! At least, for pasting directly into Muse.
- Here's the big trouble: when I previewed my site locally in browser, the SVGs were displaying fine, but then when I exported the site and made live online, the SVGs don't show at all. They don't show in Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc., and I looked at the live site on my new MacBook Pro as well as an aging PC laptop, and my iPhone. No show.

Help! Am I missing a piece of code needed for SVGs to display? Could it be my hosting (GoDaddy)? Some other issue? I could of course replace all of the SVGs with jpegs, but highly prefer utilizing SVGs, thanks!

A follow-up to this: yes, for the SVGs not displaying online (only locally), the fix with GoDaddy was to place an .htaccess file into my root directory, with this code in it:
AddType image/svg+xml svg
AddType image/svg+xml svgz

InDesign file Opens but can't create working IDML File

Hello all, I'm working on an a Mac OS X system and have an InDesign CS4 file (originally created on a PC) that opens without any problems. When I try to export an IDML from this InDesign file, the IDML makes InDesign crash when trying to open it. I have also tried exporting an INX and come across the same problem. I have narrowed it down and it appears that the problme has to do with the Master pages. Does anyone have any suggestions/guesses what the issue may be?

Well, you have the IDML file, so your problem is trivial! Divide and Conquer!
Just keep removing portions of the IDML file until you find the problem! Then inspect carefully or post a small excerpt.
Are you running 7.0.4? It fixed a lot of IDML export problems, though I don't know about import problems.
What does the thread0 section of your crash report look like?
