Captivate Resolution vs. Monitor Resolution

We are building training via Captivate and were pretty much forced to use a 980 x 680 capture area due to the limitations to the software truncation.
What we are running in to is that many of our employees in the field use small laptops maybe an 11" screen.
So far when we have tested the tutorials on the small laptop we can not find a resolution setting so that we can see the entire training area.
Are we S.O.L? or is there something I am overlooking?
Thanks!

ok, I tried the FS option and publishing as HTM file...it didn't work.
I found a link:
http://captivatedev.com/2011/08/28/scaling-adobe-captivate-content-across-browsers/
and they describe going in and hard coding the HTM file to "match" the users screen to make captivate fit.
has anyone ever tried this before?
Because this will only work with the HTM file I am willing to save my tutorials to HTM (vs. .exe) as long as I can get this to work.

  • Set PPT dimension to fit to the Captivate resolution

    Hi,
I am working with Captivate 4.
My project's resolution is 1013x584 pixels.
I need to import PPT slides to the project.
I changed the PPT slides to the same resolution as the captivate project but still when I import the slides I get the following message:
(In case it is not clear the message is that the dimensions of the PPT presentation differ from the chosen captivate project size.).
I thought that by setting the slides size to the same size as captivate the problem will be solved but I guess I am not doing something right.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Merav.

    Hello,
When you refer to the resolution: do you mean the total size only or also the ppi. Think that the ppi-settings are different (72 vrs 96)?

  • Captivate and Dual Monitor Setups

I am running a dual monitor setup and it seems captivate does
not play too well in this environment. When i record a project, i
select the window that i want to record which is our software
product that is open in full screen. Resolution on the monitor is
1024x768. Id i click the button for Snap to fit, it does not snap
around the program, it captures some of the second monitor and the
Recording size shows 1032x746. I am unable to record a project in
1024x768. Anyone else have this issue??

I have dual monitors and capture on it frequently. I'm not
    sure I've had
the problem you describe, but I almost always just set the
    size manually
(which maybe I do because I had problems with the auto
    settings).
So I select Custom Size the resize the red border to my
    monitor settings...

  • Captivate crashing issue

My Captivate projects crash while I am working on them, giving the error message 'Adobe Captivate has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience'.  I am then unable to make any further edits to the projects: anything that I try to do, for example add a caption or add a slide, causes Captivate to crash.
We have tried a number of things to resolve the issue:
All my Captivate files are stored locally, on my C drive (where Captivate is installed)
The files that have been affected by this issue have been under 9MB and under 60 slides, well within Captivate's limits
I do not use animation or audio in my files, I only use the captions, highlight boxes, buttons etc provided by Captivate.
Tech Support at my office has provided me with a new 'barebones' computer which has only essential applications such as  Microsoft Office on it, to minimize any risk from applications not being compatible with Captivate
In preparing the barebones computer, Tech Support completed the steps that Adobe Support provided in the Tech Note below:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404171&sliceId=1
    We have reinstalled Captivate
Has anyone encountered this issue or have any idea what it could be?  I wonder if any of the 2 things below might be an issue:
    1) I use dual monitors at work - so I capture my screenshots for Captivate on one monitor while Captivate is open in the other monitor.  Additionally, the monitor where I capture my screenshots is at a lower resolution (1024 X 768) than the monitor where Captivate is open, since my computer's standard screen resolution is too high for screenshots.  Could this be causing problems?
    2) I copy and paste slides, captions, buttons etc A LOT within and between different projects.  Although each of my projects is small, I have about 20 projects so far, 7 of them are affected by this issue.
We have had this issue for a month now and not sure how to proceed, any insight would be greatly appreciated .
    Thanks,
    Fereshteh

I use Captivate 3, and I use a dual screen. My resolution is the same on both screens however. I don't have any of the problems you are describing.
I also copy and paste between projects alot, and have 2 instances of Captivate open to do this. Once again, no problem.
Sorry I can't help, but you may want to let us know what version of Captivate, Windows, Flash Player you are using.

  • Inserting a Flash video and the Bandwidth Monitor

I am new to Captivate, and I want to be sure I'm following
some practical guidelines for inserting Flash video in my Captivate
    slides.
I know there are quite a few variables relating to practical
bandwidth usage--basically, we are creating elearning presenations
that will have "talking head" videos embedded within. These
presentations will be available for download via our LMS site, both
    within the US and overseas.
I have utilized Captivate's Bandwidth Monitor to gauge the
bandwidth hit each video slide is responsible for. However, I don't
believe the numbers I'm getting back: because I've set each
embedded video to "Pause slide till end of video", all the slides
are reporting the same length in seconds, KB per sec and Video KB
    numbers.
Can someone suggest a practical method for setting up the
videos such that the Bandwidth Monitor can interpret them
correctly? Can you also suggest a rule of thumb for maximum length
for each slide with an embedded video (320 X 240) in it?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Adobe Captivate freezes when I try to save, delete a screen, import a slide, etc...

    Hi all,
Big problem here. I am using Cap 5.5...things were working relatively fine. Tried to import one PPT slide into a small 15 screen project and it froze. I can only get out through the Task Mgr (CTRL + ALT + DEL and delete task). I tried clearing the cache under preferences but the YES button freezes - the window just stays open!
Same thing happens when I do most anything now, delete a screen, publish...seems like anytime a pop-up window appears with info or instruction Captivate freezes and none of the buttons to exit/cancel work. I can't save or do any work.
What can be the problem? I am using Windows 7.
    Thanks so much! S

Another possibility.  Were you by any chance using a multiple monitor setup before and now you're using a single monitor or a different multi-monitor setup?
If so, your 'unresponsive' Captivate might actually be due to this.  You cannot see another modal dialog that has opened because it's opening off screen (where Captivate thinks the monitor is located).
To test if this is the issue, next time it goes unresponsive, hit the Escape key to see if you get back control.

  • Monitoring quiz results

    Hey everyone,
Complete novice to Captivate, just downloaded the trial today as my work are looking at branching into e-learning. So far I have found it quite easy to grasp and I can see a lot of possibilities with it for us.
My questions is though, is Captivate capable of monitoring the quiz results once it has gone live? Can I monitor individuals performances via unique log-in code or will I be able to see an overall statistic on quiz performance?
Or is Captivate used for creating and another platform is required for monitoring these results?
Thanks for your help and excuse my lack of knowledge as I am purely from a video background.

You are correct that Captivate is just an authoring tool, not an LMS.  And some LMS do include limited authoring abilities.  But that usually means the authored content is bolted into that LMS and cannot be taken out or used elsewhere.
The authoring abilities of most LMSs consist of offering links to view PPTs, PDFs, or documents, with the added facility of building some simple quiz questions. They cannot compare with the kind of interactive content Captivate can create, and neither can they do advanced screen capture like Captivate.
So Captivate specialises in the authoring side of courses, and LMSs are really specialised in the delivery and tracking of the content.  Most people in the corporate or academic world find they end up needing both.

  • Why doesn't my mp4 video play from an HTML5 Course?

I have an online course that consists of 6 slides.  4 of those slides are for delivering streaming video from a Flash Streaming Server. Per our LMS Solution Provider, I have modified the streaming path names so they point to the mp4 files on the streaming server.  I have the same online course that is published as HTML/SWF to SCORM2004.  That version of the course has the video place holders pointing to the same directories on the Flash Streaming Server, except the stream path/name points to the FLV video files.  That course plays just fine.  I have a Flash Streaming Server test tool from my LMS Provider that I can use to test the mp4 video files to ensure they stream properly.  I have tested the stream names that point to the mp4 files using that tool and the video file stream just fine.  When I launch the same course from our LMS using the content that was published in Captivate 6 as HTML5 to AICC specs, the course launches but the mp4 video files do not play. Keep in mind that they are set to stream and not download.  I can advance thru the slides using a playbar, but the video will not play.  Is anyone else having this kind of problem? Any ideas on where I can look?

I have tried Google Chrome ver. 26.0.1410.43 m.  I have also tried in IE 9. It is my understanding that these are HTML5 compliant.  Since posting this question, I saw some additional information in a different area of the Adobe Forums that suggests that it is not possible to stream MP4 Video from an Adobe Captivate 6 course that is published to HTML5. It was not real clear in the way it was stated, but it seemed to imply that you can embed MP4 video but you cannot stream MP4 video using RTMP from a Flash Streaming Server.  I am now trying to get someone to confirm that statement from the Adobe Captivate 6 Team. I assume that the Captivate 6 Team monitors this forum.

  • Slow start to recording

I ran the free trial version of V.4 for a while, and then
paid for upgrade (I had V3 before). Since paying and entering
serial number, I've noticed that it takes a very very long time for
a recording session to start after I select Record--several
minutes. I believe this was not happening before I entered a serial
number, and it certainly doesn't happen with V3, which is still
installed. Another anomaly is that when I finally start to record
my web application, the recording buttons are visible, but the red
box is underneath the browser. (I'm trying to record just a part of
a web app.) In other words I can see the red box only if I move the
browser (either Firefox or IE 6). One possible wrinkle is I have
dual monitor display, with Captivate on one monitor, and the
browser I'm trying to capture in the other.

    Hi Ralph
Sorry but I'm gonna have to use my favorite F expletive!
    Frapdoodle!
Well, about the only other thing I can think of to suggest is
to try deleting the Captivate_v40.dat file. On my XP box it is
    found in this location:
    ?:\Documents and Settings\??\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
    Captivate
    ?=Installed drive letter
    ??=Your logged in user name
If you close Captivate, then rename or delete this file and
restart Captivate a fresh one will be created. Please give this a
try and see if it helps.

  • Pause FMR recording and video playback capture not working??

    Hello!
I'm trying to record full motion recording in CAPTIVATE, but the PAUSE feature looks like it is not working for me. I even tried to modify the shortcut key, but nothing works. Anybody else have this trouble or am I missing something obvius here?? I thought that maybe the FMR mode cannot be PAUSED, but nothing on that matter can be found in the manual.
Also, I'm trying to produce e-learning content for PREMIERE and SOUNDBOOTH. I've noticed that video playback within PREMIERE is not captured by CAPTIVATE. I've seen on the forum that others had this issue. Is version 5 of captivate behaving the same? Is it still not possible to capture onscreen video playback?
Any info here would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem where Captivate 5 in FMR doesn't respond to the Pause key, however I'm noticing that there hasn't been a solution supplied here.
Is there another location/forum where Adobe representatives for Captivate are actively monitoring questions and problems for this product?

  • Captivate 8 resolution issues - devil in the details

I want to get good resolution with imported power point, and also video demo screen capture. My priority is on the video demo, because I am capturing a fairly busy screen with much text and graphics, and the __ text may be rather small ___ . The issue is that with any scaling, even 10 %, some fonts will appear off and chopped.  My target resolution is 1024x768( I defined this at project creation). when i captured, i had captivate size my window to the red 1024x768 box. But the resolution is NOT as good as I expected. I wonder - does the button window (stop, skip, etc.) that gets added at the bottom of the window  screen things up ? In other words, if the vertical resolution including these buttons is 768, then the content window may be something closer to 700. This would explain the odd effects. Adobe must have this all figured out already in best practices. need to have the captured video look the same as the original- there is no technical reason why this is not possible.
    thank you!

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestion. I carried out an experiment using your method, and I didn;t see too much difference in the captured video quality for the text. It might be better, its not obvious to me. master project is 1024x768.  I made the video capture project 1600x1200 to match my 2nd screen monitor resolution.  I see there is some odd behavior with the red rectangle that appears for capture; this seems to be a bug for 2 screen operation. In any case, I ignored the 'snap to application' so it didn't matter.
I also see that the effects are really in a few categories: scaling, image compression, and dynamic range. I have left the compression options at default, but i experiemented with 32 bits instead of 16 bits. This gives marginally better text contrast and clearer icons.
Since capturing a screen session with text and icons is not an unusaly requirement, it would be great if there are guidelines for 1:1 scaling. They must exist, but in the meantime I'll keep experimenting. Next I'll have to try some more detailed graphical items, and also manual zoom and pan.

  • Optimizing captivate file for different screen resolution

    Hi,
I've a problem in optmizing the captivate file for different screens like laptop, netbook and pc. In PC's and laptops, this is not a major issue as the size of the screen is large. But when we play the captivate generated swf file in a netbook, the whole website gets resized to fit in to the resolution of the screen except the captivate file.Captivate file gets truncated in such a way that, the user can read only half of the slide.
    Thanks in advance
    Parvathy

One thing you can try is adjusting the swf dimensions manually.  I haven't found a way to do it in Cp.  We had a similar problem with some eLearning we built that all our testers used just fine.  But once someone undocked their laptop and was off their desktop monitor, had the same problem you describe, where the bottom of the movie was cut off.
Once you publish the files, open the .htm file with notepad or your text/html editor of choice.
Look for a line that looks something like this:
    var so = new SWFObject(strURLFile + strURLParams, "Captivate", "1100", "798", "10", "#CCCCCC");
    or
    var so = new SWFObject("filename.swf", "Captivate", "1600", "1200", "10", "#CCCCCC");
Change those numbers in quotes to 100%, like this:
    var so = new SWFObject("filename.swf", "Captivate", "100%", "100%", "10", "#CCCCCC");
    save the .htm
My experience has been it will adjust the swf so it fits either the height or width of the display, whichever is shorter.  That is, it will either fill the top to bottom OR side to side, but keep the swf in proportion.
    hope that helps.

  • Problem with T400 and external monitor (1920x1200 resolution)

    Hi there
    My laptop:
ThinkPad T400 2767-C99* (graphics is: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256MB / X4500MHD (Switchable Graphics)), OS is WinXP
I just installed the newest video driver from the lenovo page (which also installs "ATI catalyst")
    Externale Monitor:
I just bought a Samsung SyncMaster 2443FW, 24" TFT monitor with maximum resolution 1920x1200
    Problem:
Monitor works great with my newer T400s and my old Acer laptop. However, with my T400 (described above), I can't make the monitor use the 1920x1200 resolution. However, all the other resolutions look ugly so I need it to work with 1920x120
    - If i change the resolution by rightclicking on the Windows XP desktop (and then properties=>settings) and set the screen resolution there to 1920x1200, then my monitor only used a lower resoltion (1440x900) and I get a scrolling effect as I move my pointer across the screen
    - if I use ATI catalyst software to set the resolution, I can only chose smaller resolutions (it does no go up to 1920x1200)
    Questions
Is that a hardware (maybe the graphic card does not support 1920x1200) or a software problem (maybe some problem with the driver) or just a matter of setting?
    What can I do?
Help would be very much appreaciated!

    Kind regards
there are plenty of instances where the official driver have glitches... just look around the forum to find instances of which.... while official drivers maybe better in most instances, there are always the odd case where it doesn't work as well as it should. If they perfectly out of box, then there would never need to be multiple revisions and updates.

    Hello,
I have just bought  a Mini Display - VGA adaptor which I am plugging to a Samsung 23' LED monitor via a VGA/DVI adaptor. I manage to get a clone view but unfortunately, the maximum resolution offered is 1650x1050 when my Samsung LED monitor has resolution of 1920x1080. Therefore, part of the screen remains black.
... also, when I plug the Mini display port to VGA to my Philips 47' VGA port, I got a message that there must be a problem with the connection and again, maximum resolution offered if 1440x10..  and therefore 20% of my TV screen space remains black.
At last, when I launch Windows7 via bootcamp, this is even wost : when I select the max resolution (1440x10..), the pictures remains freezed on my TV and I can't even move the mouse (while the mouse is moving on the MBP screen...). Only coming back to a very small resolution 800x600 or so will enable me to get control of the win7 desktop on my TV...
Thank you in advance for your help

If you are using the monitor in Mirrored mode, its resolution setting will always be exactly the same as that of the built-in display. I presume you have the high-res 15" MBP display, with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. If that's true, I suspect your monitor is indeed in Mirrored mode, and that's why you can't set the monitor to its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. If you press Command+F1 to toggle the mnitor into Extended Desktop mode, you'll be able to set its resolution independently of the built-in display. Or if you use only the external monitor, with the MBP display closed, you'll be able to set the monitor's resolution to whatever it supports.

Stacking one video adapter on top of another is usually a recipe for trouble. It's always best to keep things as simple as possible. Use one adapter that gets you from mini-Displayport to whatever input you want to use on the TV or monitor.
