  • Very Poor Coverage at Santa Clara Convention Center

Last month I was at the Santa Clara Convention Center for a technical conference. Attendees here are constantly borrowing ATT phones to make calls when inside conference rooms or on the Convention Center Exhibit Floor. The signal here is very weak 1x. Data is virtually nonexistent. The lack of coverage here in this venue is really inexcusable. Even T-Mobile is providing better coverage. It is really a sad state of affairs when folks are asking their coworkers if they have a non-Verizon phone that they can borrow to make a call. The coverage problem extends to all areas of the Convention Center and the adjoining Hilton Hotel.
ATT is providing full signal strength on the convention center floor and in all conference rooms and Tmob works fairly well. Verizon is supposed to be coverage king especially in venues such as convention centers and other very populated metro areas.
I attend several conventions in Santa Clara per year and have spoken directly to the General Manager of the Santa Clear Convention Center. He informed me that he has had hundreds of complaints from vendors on the convention center floor. He contacted Verizon and was informed that the lapse in coverage was caused by the construction of the new Levis Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers that is adjacent to the Convention Center. The new Levis Stadium blocks that signal from the Verizon Cell Site. It seems to me that since this is such a high visibility venue, Verizon should permanently deploy a Cell on Wheels until the original cell site can be moved.
It doesn't make sense to me that Verizon is spending millions of dollars per year on television commercials while nothing has been done to improve the several coverage problem at this internationally renowned convention center. Can Verizon deploy a permanent Cell on Wheels to the Santa Clara Convention Center until the problem is resolved?

    Hi Paul,
I just completed a 3-day road trip throughout NYC Mon-Wed of this week, primarily on the West Side (85th down to 34th, Central Park West, Broadway, etc) and a little on the East Side (1st) and can confirm what you are seeing.  I tried to open up a ticket with VZW on the problems since I had collected very specific location, signal, performance and experience data (and wasted 2GB of data and hours of my time troubleshooting), but they would not open any tower tickets for me since I left NYC to go home and was not in NYC long enough for them to be willing to open up a ticket for me.  I suggest you call VZW back and ensure they text you the tower ticket #, also ask them to link your case information to their internal device forum "iphone 5 loses 4g lte" and text you confirmation of this too.
You can find my NYC test results at the link below to see if your experience matches mine.  Whenever possible, I compared my VZW iPhone 5 experience to my AT&T Galaxy S III at the same locations and included those results as well.
Scroll down to Oct 11 at 6:09A for my NYC results. For what it's worth, I'm in Metro Boston and my iPhone 5 VZW experience has been just as bad out here.  I have tried 3 iPhone 5's and 3 nano SIMs all on VZW.

I'm using Captivate 8 and trying to insert a URL to a document on our server into the feedback box of a quiz.  No luck.  Is there a way to do this?

Will using a custom object like a text container allow the user to click on the link inside the container and open a browser to that link.  I'm trying the  Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog way to set it up and I still can't get it to allow the user to click on the link in the text container or even be able to copy it to paste in a browser window.  I'm not a super user of Captivate and I may be doing something wrong.

  • Is Captivate the right product for me?

I am a college student, albeit an older one and I have previous IT experience as a network admin. I only say this so you know I'm not a total noob. So what I would like to do is become a course designer/creator for an adult/corporate audience. I am trying to teach myself various things as my school doesn't offer any classes on this sort of thing. I am pretty adept at Power Point animations and I have also been using a cloud-based service called Prezi to create a US citizenship informational class (more of a presentation, really). My goal is to make a few classes as a sort of e-portfolio for after graduation using 3 or 4 platforms. My next project is an English as a Second Language (ESL) class.
There are SO many different Adobe products that all look awesome in their own ways but of course they are expensive and I will be buying any software out of my own poor pockets. Additionally, I want to attend some instructor-led training at an Adobe training center in order to learn whatever product I use correctly. So, before I go to all that expense, do you guys think Captivate is the way to go? I mean, there's Authorware, the e-learning suite, Dreamweaver by itself, Presenter, etc. Based on my description of my goals, which product should I focus my time and money on?
    Thanks for all advice.
    - Roberta

    Hello again Roberta
I'm always baffled with folks that seem insistent on paying what a training center wants and traveling to the center. I've facilitated loads of classes virtually where we connect via screen sharing and I mentor as we go along and ultimately you end up with a better and more personalized result. You may ask questions at any time if you like, just like the classroom. But if you feel you must travel, pay extra and get dumped into a public class with however many others that may be present, it's your money and your time.
Just a heads up on this. Don't be surprised if you sign up for a class and you think you will be traveling only to discover that the class is later canceled. The way these training centers work is that they "bait the hook" by saying a class is scheduled for an arbitrary date. Then they sit back, wait and see how many folks express interest. Here's the kicker.
If not enough sign up, they cancel the class plain and simple and leave you hanging where you thought a class was going to happen. If enough folks do sign up, they then work their list of possible instructors to find one that will come and deliver the class. I'm one of several they may use. I'm certified by Adobe for RoboHelp and for Captivate.
Some training centers regularly use instructors that, while are certainly certified by Adobe, they aren't certified for Captivate. They may be certified for some other Adobe product such as Flash or Photoshop. This means that these instructors don't know the ins and outs of Captivate and will will essentially just read you the book.
Indeed I've facilitated many classes in Atlanta as well as many other locations for many different training companies.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Captivate Scorm 1.2 with Moodle and max. apptempts

    Dear all,
I am the person who pushed Captivate in our company and now everyone is looking at me because its not doing as we are used by Articulate.
    The setting:
Moodle allows three tries to see if someone passed or failed a lesson.
After the third try the user can redo the course in Articulate, but all questions are greyed and no new try is reported back to Moodle.
That way the user stays always with three tries and is displayed as in review mode in Moodle.
    My problem:
Captivate is set to 3 tries and reports back to Moodle.
In Moodle the user has three tries and after these three tries the user is shown passed or failed.
If the user starts the test a forth time (Moodle shows review mode) captivate will 'crash'.
If started a fifth time, captivate will work and report back.
So if you try it a fifth time and pass, Moodle shows passed.
Where is my logical error. What setting did I set wrong?
Can Captivate not do the same as Articulate?
Can Captivate receive a variable to disable the questions (Could be done via Widget)?
    Any ideas?
    Best TD

You mention that you have the quiz inside Captivate set to three tries as well as Moodle giving the user three tries.  I make that a total possible 9 attempts at the same quiz.  If the idea is to only give the person three opportunities to pass a test then you should set Captivate to only one attempt each time launched and let Moodle handle the number of attempts.  Or give Captivate 3 attempts and 1 in Moodle.  Either way, the limit should be three, if that's what you're after.
However, that won't change the bigger issue that Captivate is crashing for some reason and Moodle doesn't prevent a fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  It appears to me like when Captivate crashes, it's because something has happened in Moodle, because theoretically Moodle shouldn't be allowing any fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  So I wouldn't immediately be blaming Captivate for the issue here.
By definition, a SCORM doesn't actually know how many times it gets loaded because it doesn't store any data after the session is closed. The SCORM standard states that the SCO should not require anything outside itself to function. It's the LMS's job to record data about the user interaction with the SCORM.  So if the LMS (Moodle in your case) allows the user to open the same SCORM after they've exceeded the maximum permissible number of attempts, then the LMS is supposed to disable further scoring capability somehow, either by only allowing the course to open in Review Mode (which allows the user to do the quiz but not get any credit for it recorded) or by not allowing the user to open the course modules at all, usually giving them a message that says so.
I think your problem is somewhere in Moodle, not Captivate, and you may need to find out why Moodle is still recording scoring attempts AFTER the maximum number permitted.  This sounds like a Moodle bug to me and it might also explain why Captivate is crashing.  (If by crashing you mean that the Captivate lesson seems to go unresponsive, this is most likely because it's SCORM API is waiting in vain for the proper response to come back from Moodle.)
I'm not familiar with how Articulate interacts with LMSs, so I'll have to take your word for the fact that it can read the fact that the LMS has exceeded permissible attempts and disable the quiz components.  That sounds like quite a cool feature, but Captivate doesn't have it (that I'm aware of).  I know of no widget that will do it for you either, though in theory it could be developed.

I was trying to download an update yesterday and was receiving an error as well. It turned out to be that the Adobe Application Manager needed to be updated first. Of course, it took a while before I came across this. Once I downloaded that, the update worked fine.
This shouldn't be the case if you download it directly but it could definitely be the issue if you are doing it from the help menu. FYI...I downloaded the Captivate update a while back without issue.

Any combination of above with large number of open applications (i.e. Flash, Photoshop, Chrome, iTunes etc...) - May crash
Any combination of above with no open applications (i.e. Flash, Photoshop, Chrome, iTunes etc...) - May crash
Launch Captivate file on PC - this appears to be stable.  No issues launching same files on a PC.
Oddly enough, this issue seems to resolve itself at random.  After making several attempts to open the same document, it will finally remain so.  It can be fully edited, saved and published after that.  However, the next document (even if it is the same one) may start crashing again.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or know of a fix?

    Hi there
While I cannot offer a fix, I would strongly encourage you (and others) to report as a bug to Adobe.

  • PowerPoint to Captivate

I have a finished PowerPoint that I have imported into
Captivate. The animations have been created in PowerPoint but I now
want to add audio. Can I input the audio in Captivate and sync the
audio with the animation in Captivate or should I import the audio
in PowerPoint and then import to Captivate. I did not see a way to
adjust individual lines of text once they are brought in from
    PowerPoint…Is this correct.
Another thought was to recreate the entire thing in Captivate
although that would mean some rework so I’d like to avoid
    this if possible.

    Welcome to our community, Rich
After you import from PowerPoint, nothing is actually
editable in Captivate. You may certainly add audio, but that will
be on the tricksy side to get it synced to the animation. Also,
audio doesn't survive the trip from PowerPoint to Captivate.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are probably
better off re-creating in Captivate if that's your goal.
