Captivate Video into Indesign

Good Morning!
I've been given the task of updating our company's help text from an old school HAT to Adobe Indesign. We decided to go this route because you can make the documents interactive and incorporate video. However, I've looked everywhere and I don't see any tutorials on integrating a Captivate video into your Indesign document. Can anyone here tell me if that's possible and, if so, where I can learn how to make it happen?
Thanks!
James

Hello,
I have tried it once, with InDesign CS5 but because I couldn't get it to be functional, I converted the InDesign document to a PDF and inserted the CP-SWF's in the PDF. That is of course not the same as what you want since you want to have an interactive InDesign doc.
This is an interesting question, think I should try again and be back if and when I have an answer. Or perhaps someone else has already tried this out?

  • How Do You Insert a Video into InDesign CS5.5

What application do you use for making the video?
What are the steps after you make the video to place the video into a web page in InDesign CS5.5?

InDesign cannot place a video into a web page. You might do that in Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe's premiere program for handling HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
InDesign CAN place a video into an interactive PDF file or a SWF (Flash Player) file.
You can create video in many applications including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, iMovie and many more applications.

  • Embed a video into InDesign CS 5

I give up. I viewed the Lynda lessons ("that's all you have to do!"), and can't get my video to place without errors in my document. I tried placing it in mpg, mpg2, avi, and flv format. I have the design premium package, but don't know how to use flash. Can someone speak really slowly to me on my level and tell me the steps to place the video? If these formats are not compatible, can someone tell me how to get it correct using the Adobe software.
What I want to do is have the movie play for someone else reading my newsletter with Adobe Reader. Thanks!

Peter! Thanks so much for responding to  my plight.
What's your OS (probably not a factor, but might be), and are you patched
    to 7.0.4?
I  am using Windows 7 in 64 bit mode. What is 7.0.4?
    >How are you  making the PDF?
I select export then save as Adobe pdf  (Interactive)
    >What settings are you using,
I didn't change any settings. Am I supposed to? I  am using place... from
the file menu then selecting my video. I might get  "import failed" (in the
flv format) or "media files not supported by  flash". Why do I need support
from Flash since I am using Adobe Reader and  InDesign?
When I press continue, it places a cross hatched  box with a film strip
icon in it. I tried to run it in the Preview panel, but  nothing shows there. I
exported it anyway and the pdf file comes up in adobe  reader with a
    filmstrip icon again.
    >and what happens when you try to play  the video?
I get a yellow band across the top of  the screen that says, "some features
have been disabled to avoid potential  security risks." No matter how many
times, I select "trust this document  always", it keeps coming up. When I
click on the movie icon, with one format I  get just the sound. In another, I
get "Acrobat has encountered an error while playing this  media clip."

  • Linking Video in Indesign CS5.5

    Hello,
I'm getting an error message of "The URL must reference a file that is compliant with flash player when trying to incorporate a linked video into Indesign CS 5.5. Why am I getting this error message? I would like to export the file as an interactive pdf.
    Thanks.

So it sounds like you're trying to stream a video stored on a server, correct?
Here's the way the URL must be written:
"The URL must point to a file that ends in the appropriate file extension; for example, http://www.fakeURL.com/videos/Intro_Video.f4v for a file on a web server. Use rtmp:// in the URL for a video on the Flash Media Server or Flash Streaming Service."
This is from an article I wrote for InDesign Magazine on placing video into InDesign.

  • Aggregated Adobe Captivate Video in Flash Media Server

    Hey,
Has anyone attempted to implement a captivate video into Flash Media Server?
I specifically need to know if an aggregated Captivate video will work in Flash Streaming Server. The reason I am not sure that it will is because there are multiple .swf files that an Aggregated video must communicate with and I wonder if that will cause any issues.
Please let me know if you've run into any problems, if this works, or if you have any other information.
    Thanks!

So an Aggregated Captivate Video is basically a compilation of several other Captivate Videos. To see what I mean, open up Captivate
go to File --> New Project-->Aggregator Project.
Choose the .swf files of published projects that you want to run together as a single video (aggregated .swf).
Then, publish the Aggregator Video and you will generate a .swf file that plays all the ones you selected previously.
So basically I am worried that Flash Media Server won't work because the main video file (the aggregated .swf) uses the component .swf files to play.
    Any thoughts?

  • Scaling Captivate videos in RoboHelp Multiscreen

    RoboHelp HTML 11, Captivate 7
I'm including Captivate videos into my Robohelp HTML project. I need to be able to shrink the video "object" to fit in our window.
Rick, you've answered this question several times over the years, such as here: Re: How do you scale captivate file in Robo 9 to fit the screen?  In my case, the output has to run in Internet Explorer without Shockwave Flash enabled.  (Also, the user won't have RoboHelp or Captivate installed, if that matters).  I'm told that our Captivate demos were published in "Scalable HTML" format. I was using Multiscreen as the output, but I'm open to one of the other HTML outputs.
I tried it two different ways:
I imported the Demos using File --> Import --> Adobe Captivate Demo --> HTML5 Output, then selected the appropriate index.htm file. The videos run, but resizing the text box or demo "object" only crops the video.  We even tried saving them in a smaller size in Captivate, but they seem to be the same size in RoboHelp.
I imported the project (*.cptx) using File --> Import --> Adobe Captivate Project. Doing this, I can resize the video (and watch it using that "viewer" that appears after I click "Generate"). However, when I run the index.htm file in Internet Explorer (as I assume the users will do), the video is blank unless I enable Flash. (This is despite the fact that I checked "Use Adobe Captivate HTML5 Output" in the Multiscreen layout!)
What's the best way to approach this?  (I hope you're not going to tell me that I have to put everything into Baggage, because as you've pointed out in the past, that would be a very big job.)
    Thanks.
    -- Shawn

    Hi Shawn
Unless you want to host the Captivate output separately from RoboHelp and just link to it where needed, you are going to find yourself a bit "stuck" with the baggage trick.
If the content needs to scale, you have a couple of ways to deal with it.
    1. You can simply link from a TOC page to the html page for the Captivate output. Using this method should cause the Captivate output to scale to the topic frame.
    2. You can insert an InlineFrame and point its content to the Captivate html page in Baggage. You would then need to configure the frame to be 100% wide. You would take this approach if you have other content that needs to come before and/or after the video.
I would heartily encourage you to report the pain points of being forced to add Baggage folders and files as a bug to Adobe using the link below.

  • Working with Captivate videos

I've been trying for a while now to find the best way to
incorporate Captivate videos into my (html) help projects and
haven't found a solution yet. The video files either display much
too large or appear very fuzzy or out-of-focus when we try to
resize them for better display. The file sizes have also been an
issue, since these tend to be quite large. I'm currently running
RoboHelp 7 HTML. Any help or insight on this would be greatly
    appreciated.
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Dave

    Hi Dave
When Captivate creates output in SWF format you usually end
up with a few different files.
    * .HTM file to present the whole thing
    * .SWF containing the main part of the movie
    * .SWF containing the skin and playback controls
    * standard.js (a JavaScript file)
I'm hopeful that strides have been made by Adobe so just
pointing at the .HTM file is now sufficient. So assuming it all
comes in fine, you could then just open the .HTM page Captivate
creates and ensure it opens in a new window so as to maximize
    available playback space.
Other than that, always create your Captivate projects as
    small as you physically can.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Embed streaming video from my own Server into InDesign CS5

    Hi all,
I try to place a streaming video into my Indesign CS5 Document. InDesing seems to find the File, cause it shwos up the preview image in the Media Window, but the videoslider nor the play-button of the media-window is working.
    the link (Red5 Streaming Server):
    rtmp://87.230.53.80/oflaDemo/personaltv/bewerbermagazin/wuerzburg/test/video.flv
When I export it as an interactive PDF, and I click on the videoframe, it first shows the security dialog as expected, but after that it is only the empty player and the progressbar looks like it can not connect to the streaming server.
    Is there a workaround?
Thanks in Advance for any hint!
P.S.: If I load it from my webserver via http:// ... it works great.

I think this isn't really an InDesign issue at all. It sounds like an Acrobat issue.
First, you haven't said what version of Acrobat you're using. I'm assuming Acrobat X Pro?
I've used this with a friend's Flash Media Server so I know it works. What version of Flash server do you have installed?
I the link you provide I see a spaceband after the word "test" in the path. Could that be a problem?
Other than that, it appears that you're following the requirements listed in the Help file for Acrobat X Pro.
If you have further problems, you might post this on the Acrobat User Forum.

  • What kind of Video can I import into InDesign?

I've read that Acrobat 9 and newer can display flash video files within a PDF. I tried importing an .flv file into InDesign but it did not work. Is this possible to do? Also, are there any other types of video files that can be imported into InDesign?
The idea is to do a quick reference guide for a software application which will have an embedded flash video file showing motion capture of the application in action.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Acrobat 9 can display Flash (SWF) files well if you add the files within Acrobat. However, if you add the SWF files in InDesign and then export to PDF, the SWF files may not play, especially on a Mac. You're better off leaving a placeholder in InDesign and then adding the SWF in Acrobat to the exported PDF. For more details, see Sandee Cohen's entry:

  • Can't embed a Captivate video (swf) into Power Point 2007

I am trying to embed an Adobe Captivate video (swf) into power Point 2007. I very carefully followed all the steps outlined from a search I did on the web and it is not working.
These are the steps I followed:
    1. Create a simulation using Adobe Captivate and publish it as a SWF file.
    2. Open the PowerPoint presentation and insert a blank slide for adding simulation.
    3. We need to work with the Developer tab now. If you can't see it in the ribbon, follow these steps to make it visible.
    (steps to get developer)
4.On the developer tab, in the Controls group, click More Controls
    5. In the list of controls, click Shockwave Flash Object and click OK.
    6. Drag diagonally to create a box in which the simulation would appear. Don't worry about sizing it accurately; you can adjust it later as well.
    7. Right click the Shockwave Flash Object, and then click Properties.
    8. On the Alphbetic tab, click the Movie property. In the value columnm type the full drive path, including the file name.
    9. Set the Playing property to true, Loop to false and Embed Movie to true.
    10. Close the Properties dialog and test the movie.
The simulation will now play in your PowerPoint presentation.
Note: If during the slideshow,t he simulation doesn't play automatically, right-click and select Play.
I followed these steps, and it is just not working. I go to play my power point presentation and set it to play from the beginning, and when it gets to the slide with the swf file, I just get a faded out still picture of the video, and it will not play.  If someone has had luck with embedding swf files from Captivate into Power Point, please let me know how you did it.   Thanks.

Thanks, I really appreciate the information. The only problem is that I have to keep it as a power point presentation.   I convert from ppt to a video, so I need to keep it as power point.
I found these steps on the internet and followed them exactly, and went through the steps 3 times, to make sure I wasn't leaving anything out, and it just didn't work. I have a tech guy who's supposed to call me today regarding this issue, and hopefully he'll be able to go through it with me step by step to try and work it out.
Ultimately, these are going to be training videos that are going to be set up on a website, so they ultimately have to be saved as videos.
I'm keep trying to figure it out though.
    Thanks.

  • Is it possible to stream video into a PDF document with HTML 5?

I'm trying to get around using flash to stream videos into my interactive PDF documents, as it's not supported on iOS. I'm wondering if there's a way to use HTML 5 to acomplish something similar. I have access to both InDesign CC and the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro.

An alternative is to separate the quiz pages to a separate document and include it in the main PDF as a file attachment. You can create links in the main document to the attachment so that it opens in a new window. When this quiz document is closed, the main document will be open.

  • Linking a YouTube Video in Indesign

All I want is a picture that when clicked will go to a YouTube video. The document is in Indesign 6 and I am exporting as an interactive PDF. When it's opened as a PDF and I click the link I get an error saying that "Google detected suspicious activity"
Is this Google or did I do something wrong?

    Ellis,
I wish I could replicate your results.
How exactly did you insert the hyperlink into InDesign? What hyperlink is it?
This is what I did with no problems:
I went to a YouTube video and copied the URL from the link area in Chrome (or Safari).
I switched to my InDesign document, selected an object, opened the Hyperlinks panel, pasted the URL into the little field in the Hyperlinks panel, a new hyperlink appeared, I deselected the object. All the ? and = signs stayed in the link.
I also pasted the URL as text into an InDesign text frame. I used the Hyperlinks panel menu command to convert all URLs into hyperlinks. All the ? and = signs stayed in the link.
I also pasted the URL as text into an InDesign text frame, but did not use the hyperlinks panel. All the ? and = signs stayed in the link.
I exported the file and opened it in Acrobat. I clicked the first hyperlink. The video opened in my default (Chrome) browser.
I clicked the second hyperlink. The video opened in my default (Chrome) browser.
I clicked the third URL. Acrobat had added a hyperlink to the URL. The video opened in my default (Chrome) browser.
If you're doing somethintg else, I'd love to know what it is. Or what is this strange link that doesn't work.

  • Embed Video in inDesign and not have Dropbox logos?

    Hi,
Is it possible to embed video from a video stored in your Dropbox folder and not have the Dropbox logos appear?

I tried embedding a video into my inDesign document which I have stored in my Dropbox folder.  I did this to keep the file size down in my document, but when I embed the video that is in my Dropbox folder, the result is a video within the contained window of my document whcih is great, but it also contains the Dropbox logos at the top and I would love to get rid of the logos.  The same thing goes for Youtube videos - when I embed a Youtube video, the whole Youtube page is included in the video window.

  • Importing interaction into InDesign

I understand that the Captivate 7 interaction must first be put into Edge Animate and saved as OAM file before importing it into InDesign, but I don't know how to import a Captivate interaction into Edge Animate. If anyone knows steps for how to do this I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't think that's true. I don't know if you can save the interaction by itself but you certainly can save the Captivate file after you get it working and import it into InDesign.
Can you tell us exactly what you're trying to do? In the meantime, check out this blog post from Pooja...it's excellent:

  • Linking contiguous copy into InDesign

    Hello.
I have a job that has say 10 different paragraphs of copy turning into a lot of variants. For instance:
    Letter 1 has copy 1, 2 and 3
    Letter 2 has copy 1, 2 and 4
    Letter 3 had copy 1, 4 and 8
Is there a way to import copy into InDesign and if it is edited externally, autoupdate and flow on from each other?
I know that i can paste Word files and link them but, you cannot flow the paragraphs on from one another. Im playing with InCopy at the moment but this looks the same.
    Hopefully that makes sense.
    Thanks for you time.
    Warren.

    Thankyou Peter.
    Ive never used Conditional Text.
A Google search, a YouTube video and about 20 mins later im proficient and this looks like a perfect solution.
Not so sure InCopy will work in tandem so i will experiment with that, but thankyou for the info.
    Warren
PS Conditional Text does not seem to work with tables. It works fine with the data in a table but will not remove an unwanted row for instance. I will experiment there too.
