Capture and reconnect media?

I captured HDV media as SD for an edited video for the web. Now I need to recapture the media as HDV and would like to reconnect it to the edited timeline. I don't want to have to re-edit the web video from scratch, I would like to just import the needed media and reconnect it.
There are six hours of tape. The final product is a series of 14 videos between 1 & 5 minutes long.
Is there a way to only capture the scenes I need? And How do I go about reconnecting the media in the edited timeline.
Please help.

This means that when you initially captured the tape, you started capturing right away...you didn't get enough "pre-roll." A tape needds 3-5 seconds to get up to speed, and when you batch capture, the camera tries to go 5 seconds BEFORE the clip TC you want to capture. If you didn't give enough pre-roll, then it won't work. For that clip you might have to capture manually and then eye match it.

  • Importing EDLs and Reconnecting Media... Who can answer this question?

Hi, happy holidays! What am I missing here:
I have an EDL with in and out points from a number of different source files.
I import the EDL in Final Cut Pro as a sequence.
I click on the sequence. The edit decisions can be seen in the timeline, with all of the source files designated as offline.
I select the timeline and attempt to reconnect the media.
The media reconnects, no problem, but the edit decisions aren't in place. In other words, all of the media files begin at the beginning of the source media files (i.e. 04:00:00:00), rather than at the edit decision in and out points for each of the edits in the timeline.
Surely I'm just missing a step here, right?
    Thanks, Mtbakerstu

    Hi Jerry,
The source files have been have been re-encoded with a different codec, but they are exactly the same insofar as duration of the source files, and the timecode hour and frame rate they have been assigned, as well as the name I have assigned the files.
I am simply trying to trick the EDL into recreating a timeline which utilizes source files which have been encoded differently than the original source files... And the timeline is recognizing these files.... only it won't cue the files up to correct timecode point in the files.
    Hope that makes sense.
    Thanks,
    Mtbakerstu

  • ??? can BRIDGE helps PREMIERE reconnect media ???

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3 (also have Bridge). I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media.
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if BRIDGE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone got any idea how to use Bridge in this case ?
    Thank you.

Nope. Just like Premiere, AE will interpret your offline files as the proper sources and require you to reconnect each of them manually. Even using proxies would have no benefits here as it does not update the timelien structure. I'm wondering, though, since you both use Premiere, can't you just export an EDL or AAF and then re-import? I rarely use Premiere, but seems exactly what you would want to do. Would be simple on Avid systems...

  • Audio sync out when reconnecting media

Hey if anybody could help it'd be so appreciated.
Editing a short film. Myself and editor have same specifications on os x, and same update of final cut (6.0.6). Got the project and files on a hard drive from him, a duplicate of the file he works from, but when I open project file and reconnect media, the audio is COMPLETELY out of sync on every take. It means I can't work on it at home and bring it to him for detailed work, basically, no going back and forth..
When reconnecting the "file attribute mismatch" thing comes up, and the attributes differ as follows; 'media start and end', and 'rate'. I presume this is the explanation, but what's the solution?
Is there something obvious I'm missing, some easy fix? OR even a longer, harder one that will mean we can go back and forth?

Oh God, I might be in over my head already...
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll see what I can find, not sure where to find all that information exactly but I'll give it a shot. This forum is amazing, thanks.

  • Reconnect media and render files

    Hi!
I need advice. On my G4 and four different external LaCie hard disks I have five different Final Cut Pro 4.5 projects running, i e they are finished but I would like to keep them a bit more before I throw them in the bin. OS is 10.3.9.
I thought I had control but I hadn’t. When I look around I notice that my projetcs’ different folders have been created in other places than I thought. Furthermore in some of the folders (Render folders and others) there are more than one project’s files.
I haven’t dared to do anything about it but I want clean up during this summer and so I wonder: Would it be possible to move all the render files, the captured files etc so everything is in neat order, and then open the projects in FCP and reconnect all the media files that I have moved?
I’d be happy for your views on this matter, Björn Obenius, Sweden

    Yes it's quite easy.
First you need to set up your scratch disks in FCP preferences. Where did you want to save all you renders, audio, media files, and even back up project files.
This will automatically create new folder to that location.
Next, transfer the media files to the those new folders created by FCP. The folder name Capture scratch/(projectname)/.
For the render files, you can either delete them and start fresh or transfer those to the new folder created by FCP called Render Files/(project name)/
You can condense all of these. When you go back to FCP it will ask you where the files are and you can reconnect them there.

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • Capture and transmit live media

I am doing a project that capture live media from a capture device and transmit it to a client. Currently I can capture and transmit, but the problem is when I start transmit, the local player stops playing. If I clone datasource and use the cloned datasource for transmitting, the local player does not stop after it starts transmitting, but the remote site can't receive any stream. In short, my problem is I can't make the local and remote sites play captured media simultaniously. I tried JM Studio and it works, but I can't understand how they implement it. It seems that they didn't use cloned datasource. Anyone who have this kind of experience please help me. Thanks a lot.

If you want to display video while transmiting it you can use the MonitorControl. Consult the jmf guide and solutions or this same forum.
But MonitorControl can be a complex solution, specially if you want to monitor video+audio.
You can also use clones. You need undestand that the clones depend of its original datasource, so this origin have to be connected to the clone works. Consult google or this same forum to more info.
    Regards.

  • Reconnecting media for entire project

I have had to clean up a very messy project by moving all the media to new drives with one Capture Scratch folder on each. I'm wondering if there is a particular way the media should be reconnected.
Would I start reconnecting the media from bins of clips? Or reconnect the media from sequences? Or would I simply highlight everything in my browser and then start reconnecting media.
Thanks in advance. This has been a crazy process and prompt responses from other users has really helped. Again, I hope we can all make it clear to Apple that they should push fixing their media management to the top of their priority list. I make this clear on every tech support call.
    Loch

If there is the possibility of media corruption (or sequence corruption, for that matter), reconnecting from your main sequence might be beneficial.
In the past, I've discovered clips (stills, usually) that have gone wonky on me by reconnecting one-by-one from a sequence.
If there is no question of media corruption (it's simply that the project is too bloated, for instance) then you can probably make do with connecting from your bins.

  • Reconnect Media - Unable to Reconnect All Files in Relative Path

I have a project that I have restored from a DLT backup. The project file and the all the media are now on a SAN which I access from my G5. Since this project originated on a different editor's computer all of the clips in my project are ostensibly offline within my project. All of the media files are located in a single capture scratch folder on the SAN with the same filenames and reel numbers. As such, I figured that when I used "Reconnect Media" with "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" checked, all of the files would automatically relink. However, everytime I attempt to do this, the only file that is reconnected is the original file which I manually selected to establish the file path to the rest of my media. If I use the "Search" functionality and instruct FCP to search the capture scratch folder one file at a time, without fail, it will automatically find the media and reconnect it. Yet, I cannot seem to batch reonnect, as it were.
My question is this: If all of the media files are located in the same capture scratch folder (i.e. same relative path), why won't FCP automatically reconnect all the files in that folder to the corresponding offline clips?
I have attempted to reconnect the media on two different machines. The same issue arose on both machines. This leads me to believe that the problem may be a result of some issue with the filesystem on the SAN. Also, I have run FCP rescue and attempted a reconnect with both a clean backup and entirely new preference files, to no avail.

    Hi Nat,
I don't have a direct solution, and you might you've been doing this already. Although you didn't describe this. I think that what I would try to do is:
    - Copy the project (backup).
    - Open the project, and when it tells you that 132 clips and 714 render-files are offline, I'd select the checkboxes in order to 'Forget' the files.
    - Hit OK.
    - FCP 'forgot' all the links to the original files. So you forced errors from that perspective by doing this.
    - Try to reconnect again.
    Just a thought...
    All the best
    Rienk
PS What version FCP are you running?

  • Can't Reconnect Media

I recently moved several capture files from my internal HD to an external one. I did "Reconnect Media" to update their location and they worked fine. Later, Final Cut started asking me to recconect the files manually as it loaded sequences. Eventually, it stopped working alltogether and the files cannot be reconnected. The reconnect window looks like this: http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1055/picture13tv8.png
If I try to do locate and select the correct file, the connect button greys out and I'm forced to close the window.

I actually found a deeper problem... I actually got some files with the above error to connect, but some still refuse. The files that don't work somehow got corrupted and no longer appear to work. Opening them in Quicktime shows a file with no sound and no video.
This happened to me a while back ... same thing ... external drive containing all my files. One day FCP wouldn't reconnect and when i checked the files they came up as generic icons ... (in this case) no audio.
I had to go to my backup set and copy over the bad audio files. Everything worked fine after that. Needless to say, since that time i've maintained numerous backups of my media files in case this happens again.
I've always suspected directory damage caused the original problem.

  • Reconnect media attribute change

I am trying to revise a project and have moved the media from my MacBook Pro to an external drive. When I try to reconnect the media I gat an error saying "Some or more of the files you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original".
The attributes in question are the reel and rate. I have not changed anything, just moved them.
    Any ideas?

so, what you're saying is that you duplicated the contents of the capture scratch, from Disk A to Disk B
thats fine of course, but unless you've instructed to your FCP project to use the duplicate copy as the media source, then your project will still stay media is offline if you don't mount Disk A, because it doesn't know anything about Disk B ...
then again, you seem to be suggesting that Reconnect Media... is not letting you redirect the offline clips (on Disk A) to the new copies (on DIsk B) ?
the procedure that ought to work is:
in the Browser window, select all the offline clips, then choose File > Reconnect Media...
in the subsequent "Reconnect Files" window, click "Locate" and navigate the "Reconnect" browser to the new clip location on Disk B.
when you've selected the new copy of the clip, make sure the "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" checkbox is ticked and then click the "Choose" button.
that should take you back to the Reconnect Files window, and the list of files in the upper pane should now have moved to thelower pane ... click "Connect" and you should be done.

  • Final Cut Pro refuses to Reconnect Media

I'm just figuring out FCP. I got far enough to import one hundred 9MB image files and cut it all together with music, titles, a FRAPS capture background, and basic motions. I exported an avi and uploaded to YouTube and such. So far, seems dandy.
Since it's on a dedicated machine at the office, I log in. When I came back to work on it some more the next day, FCP said my "media files are offline." I have all my files organized and shared on the LAN, so I figured out to Reconnect Media in chunks across my nine or so bins. I didn't have to reconnect all 100+ files individually. It's 3+ GB worth of data.
Today I log in, I get the ornery expected "offline" business, but for some random reason FCP will not match the filenames en masse anymore. It has decided it's looking for...
    Sketch 74 - Sunday Morn D0.tif
    ...instead of the real filename...
    Sketch 74 - Sunday Morning Restaurant 1-1.tif
FCP seems to have appended sequential HEX values to the filenames. Maybe I enabled some weird logging "feature"? It works as expected if I hard navigate to reconnect one image file.
Anyway, I can't edit a video if I have to reconnect 100 individual media files manually per login. Help?

I have "imported" my media files from across the network. I used the "Import" command and pointed to a network folder. There was difference - I put bins inside of bins to make a cleaner tree structure for myself.
I've begun the process of making my filenames more terse and even more organized. Hopefully I can just do one massive import when I login to work.

  • Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
    Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.
