Capture card for HDV

Can anyone tell me if I have somekind of advantage from a capture card when working in HDV like realtime effects or even better direct output to tape without the time consuming conforming of the HDV material.
Core

I'm thinking about getting the Intensity Pro, and I have a Canon HV20, but I have a few questions for you.
Do the intermediate codecs look better when going from HDV to Apple Pro Res for instance?
If you have an HV20, do you know if capture is smoother? By that I mean does it find timecode more easily (when I batch capture, it's a struggle because FCP can't find the timecode half the time, and I have to keep telling it to retry).
How does the computer control the deck/camera? I didn't know you could control something over HDMI.
With the HV20, it records in 24p but really 60i where you have to take out the interlaced frames to make it a 24p image. If the HDV is captured as Pro Res, is it possible to still use Cinema Tools to remove the interlaced frames?
I have a ton more questions, but that's good enough for now
Thanks so much!

Is it impossible to capture into FCP 5.1.4 without an AJA or blackmagic capture card? would this apply to imovie HD as well? I'm using an song hvr m15u deck....any help appreciated.
    best

i am positive the i-link is "off" in the down convert section, and the output i have set to HDV. i've tried automatic, no better luck. such a pain. it feels to me like a setting in the deck, b/c i can't properly play tapes back on a monitor.
    thanks again for the suggestions.

  • "fire wire" video capture cards for mac pro

....Have Power Mac ver. 10.9.5 system Maverick w/ 4 MB RAM & am trying to locate hardware for:
acquiring "FIRE WIRE" video capture cards for mac pro.... ? Any suggestions....?(Just purchased Adobe CS 5 premium)

Your question doesn't make much sense.
What type of Mac Pro do you have? Is it the new black cylinder or the old style silver tower?
Firewire is built-in to the old models & the new Mac Pros can use Thunderbolt to Firewire converters to capture from Firewire sources.
    Maybe like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
Many older cameras used Firewire for capturing, but that has been replaced by other connection types. What are you trying to capture from?

If you use iMovie, FCE, FCP, BTV or Live Capture and an analog-to-digital converter you can capture via Firewire; the converter will do the job of the capture card. One of the more popular models is the Canopus AVDC-110.

  • Power Mac Video Capture card for G5 Quad

Can anyone direct me to where I can get a video capture card for my Power Mac G5 Quad.
I would like to directly connect my DVD player to my G5.
Can I do this and what do I need and where can I get it. Thank you for your guidance!

Canto makes a nice firewire video digitizer for under $ 200 that will handle full (non-HD) resolution video. If you already have a mini-dv camera or can find a used one cheap (maybe one where the tape transport is bad) you can connect the camera to your G5 via Firewire, and then use the camera's auxiliary video and audio inputs to connect the source you want to digitize.

  • Video Capture Card for Adobe Connect

Does anyone have any recommendations for a video capture card for the Mac to use with Adobe Connect? I have a HD camera that I want to connect to my Mac through the S video connection on the camera. I need a video capture card that will work with Adobe Connect.

The Video Telephony Pod is the video pod when Video Telephony Conferencing equipment/cameras are configured to talk with Adobe Connect. This was introduced in Connect 8.1 for SIP and H.264  based VTC systems. It will only work with H.264 video streams from the VTC type cameras found in conference rooms. Usually the major players in the U.S. are Polycom and Tandberg.
The VTC Pod appears as a standard pod once the administrator of an Adobe Connect on-premise server has configured the various admin screens and added the SIP addesees to the configuration xml file.
The video quality is different than the webcam video as here is a table:
    Tandberg 990:
    Profile Level At FMG End
    Video Out At Device
    High
    1200.0kbps  448p
    Medium
    600.0 kbps   448p
    Low
    250kbps       CIF
    Tandberg Edge 95 MXP:
    Profile Level At FMG End
    Video Out At Device
    High
    1700 kbps w720p
    Medium
    600kbps    w448p
    Low
    250kbps    w288p
    More information on formats:
    768 x 448@30fps (w448p)
    576 x 448@30fps (448p)
    512 x 288@30fps (w288p)
    352 x 288@30fps (CIF)
    176 x 144@30fps (QCIF)
So, that HIGH, MEDIUM and LOW refer to the Adobe Connect room preference setting for video. Notice that HIGH shows we can deliver 720p resolution.
The normal webcam video pod is locked to 480p (VGA) 4x3 resolution at 20 frames per second but the server admin on an on-premise install  can alter a configuration xml file to go 24 fps but not higher than VGA on the webcam pod.
Probably more than you ever imagined I would share but that's my style.
    Take care.

  • Need OPTIONS for capture cards for Beta SP

Hi all...I'm a FC newbie and looking to upgrade from an OLD M100 system to a FC system. I would like to hear what you all have to say about
    1. The capture card for digitizing Beta SP
    2. Which card would be best (price and proformance) for DVDs...now I mean which card will capture Beta SP with the best quality to be used for DVDs.
    3. and which harddrives do you prefer.
    thnx in advanced
    mark

For working with BetaSP, price & performance-wise, the Aja IO La box is great. It connects via firewire, but allows capture in DV, DV50, 8- and 10-bit Uncompressed.
It has RS-422 control for your deck, and 4 channels of analog audio in & out.

  • Capture Card for Flash Live Media Encoder

    Hello,
I need help finding the best capture card for the flash live media encoder. Any suggestions?

The problem you have is that your game and FMLE are competing for CPU time.  Running FMLE is very CPU-intensive because of the work of encoding video.  When FMLE consumes all your CPU there is nothing left to run the game.  Instead of cropping I would suggest that you change your monitor resolution to 1280x720 (this is still HD, just not 1080 "full HD").  Increasing the screen size then cropping it back down is just another task you are throwing at the CPU that it can't cope with.

  • HD/SD Blackmagic Capture Card for G5 Quad Power PC

    Hi,
Can someone give me some advice on buying a good, reasonably priced capture card for my G5 powerpc quad. Its still running very well and I'd like to extend its professional use for a little bit
longer as I suspect that the next incarnation of desktops is possible months away.
I'm assuming a BlackMagic card is best suited due to my limited budget but I'm open to suggestion.

You haven't said what formats you're hoping to capture, but I'd imagine one of Blackmagic's Decklink cards would work for you (Intensity Pro is not compatible with non-Intel macs).
Pay attention to the hardware requirements though: http://blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=76

  • Good capture cards for Mac?

Does anyone know of capture cards for Mac that work well for FMLE?
The list of tested cards in the Device Compatability Matrix only appear to be for Windows.
I see discussions about the Blackmagic cards, for example, that indicate those have problems in many situations.
    Any tips are much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sage

Thanks! And the Canopus ADVC 110 is also external via firewire, which is
    even better.
    Cheers,

  • Best editing card for HDV

what is the best editting card on PowerMac G5 that i can work either DV and HDV without lossing any quality especially in HDV
i getting a new PowerMac G5 & gonna use it for editting, i have DV & HDV camcorders , im trying not to loose quality for HDV when capturing
    Thank you

None, really. FCP 5 is meant to handle DV and HDV (and DVCPRO HD) over firewire with no loss of quality.
BUT...if you are talking the JVC and 720 24p...then you'll need a capture card. AJA LH or LHe, depending on the model of G5 you have.

  • Capture Card for rendering speed vs. no card

Only having HDV firewire output from my camera,
can't really use a card for capture, but,
would a card (eg. Blackmagic HD Extreme) speed up the quicktime export from FCP6.?
currently 50 mins sequence takes 6 hours to output.
Speed up conforming to a diff sequence (eg. Prores)?
    speed up everything or anything?????

Not if you are limited to sending back out HDV. The reconforming process is slow (as you have experienced).
in the for what it's worth category, this is why it's takes time.
Sony's version of HDV is formated into a 15 frame GOP (group of pictures). Simply put, this means there is one full frame (I frame) then 14 frames that reference the differences to the full frame. These reference frames do not contain full information and only make sense when compared to the last I frame and any intervening frames.
When you make a cut in this GOP, the chances are you are NOT editing on an I frame, you are cutting somewhere between them. This means FCP must generate an internal I frame at that point. As you can imagine this is an editing nightmare. That FCP gets it to work is truely a bit of wizardry.
When you are all done, FCP must re-conform the the footage, that is, generate a continuous 15 frame GOP structure from the beginning of the footage. Some I frames become reference frames and new I frames must be generated in the correct pattern. This is very computationally intensive and is totally dependent on processor speed.
So, If you want to speed up output to HDV, get a faster machine.
    good luck,
    x

  • Log and capture problems for HDV using FCP 5.0.1

I cant seem to get a picture in my log and capture browser when using HDV. The screen says my camera is connected, I see timecode correctly rolling in sync with my cameras timecode, I can use the controls, but no picture on the screen?
When I hit capture now, the capture screen pops up and gives a message "waiting for data from device".
we shot at 720p at 25fps, there is no capture preset for this in my version of FCP. Could this be the problem? Please help!!

    Thanks for responding.
It's a mac osx 10.4.11 and a 2 ghz intel core duo. I'm using easy set up in final cut pro, but there is no option for hd fire wire basic (which apple support told me to look for). The only hd options are 1080i50, i60 and 720 p30. The other hd options are for the apple intermediate codec. When I use the easy set up for hd 1080i60, then go to log and capture, it doesn't give me the preview window to set in's out, batch capture etc. It only lets me capture straight from the camera and I have to manually stop it and start it which is a major pain. Plus the clips need to be rendered once I put them in a timeline. I've shot and edited on mini dv with final cut for nearly 7 years, but now that i've tried to upgrade and shoot hd mini dv, all of these problems have arrived in capturing. I'm starting to think my version of final cut pro (5.0.1) just doesn't work with hd, unless it's very time consuming. Any ideas?

  • Capture Cards for MacBook

I want to video tape my Xbox games, and I'm wondering which capture card would be the best for a Mac computer and what do I also need to use it. Thanks

    Hi B2,
I'm not sure how you would use your Mac computer to capture Xbox 360 gameplay but I've heard that the AVerMedia devices work great for this in general.

  • Capture card for laptop

I'm wondering what capture cards people have gotten to work with either Mac or PC laptops and Flash media encoder. SDI + HDMI + Analog in woul be nice but any two would work.
    Thanks
    Philip

Black Magic Design (www.blackmagic-design.com) make a USB3 capture card that will capture SD and HDMI inputs.  The other option I know of is the epiphan range of DVI framegrabbers - they have a DVI2USB option.  Howver I have heard reports that the epiphans don't necessarily capture great quality but have been unable to test this myself.  The epiphan devices cost about 4x the black magic devices.
If you have a very recent Mac model that has the new thunderbolt interface then Black Magic also have a thunderbolt version of the Intensity capture device.  If I had money for a new laptop and a new cap device, I would be getting a MacBook Pro and thunderbolt intensity card.
