Capture coverage on a DVD

I have three long and boring DVDs of soccer games that I am supposed to edit into a little video for the soccer team banquet. This is pro bono work and technical quality is not a factor. Is there any way to capture a DVD directly into FCP. I tried copying the folder but do not know what to do with them to try and extract the video. Any thoughts? There is no copyright protection or issues.

Problem is I don't have the through-camera-to-firewire option available to me right now. So I am doing streamclip. I tried to convert to AVI files but then FCP would not recognize it. So now I am converting to QuickTime with the option setting at DV/DVCPRO- NTSC.
I can import this successfully into FCP so I am off to the races.
As mentioned earlier, technical quality is not a priority. I got hood-winked into doing this project and am not thrilled about spending my Sunday going over out-of-focus pics taken by some mom in the stands to go with the pathetic video coverage. But the banquet is tomorrow, so there it is. In addition, the camera malfunctions every now and then, the coverage is too wide to actually see any action, and the audio is painful... basically, it is your typical horrible high school production nightmare.
Enough venting.

  • Capturing from an Internal DVD player

    Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro & FCE 3.5. Is it possible to capture using my laptop's internal DVD player or can I only capture using an external DVD player hooked up with firewire?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

You can't capture from any DVD player without converting the material. It's in completely the wrong format. You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime with the DV codec.

  • What software works to capture pics off a dvd?

What software or app works best to capture pics off a dvd?

You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
No guarantees any of the above will work using Panther.

  • Basic Questions - capturing miniDV, exporting to DVD?

I apologize for the basic questions, but it's been a while since I've done this start to finish...like five years.
I shot a bunch of miniDV sports footage on a Canon GL2 and I am digitizing the footage via firewire (straight from my camera to my computer). I am using Final Cut HD. The output will be to DVD.
The Easy Setup is set to DV-NTSC. The sequence and capture settings are both set to DV-NTSC 48kHz.
    1. Under system settings > playback control > What are the correct settins for "RT", "video quality" and "pulldown pattern"? Do these ultimately affect the output quality?
    2. What is the "best" way to output to DVD (using the least compression, looking the best)? The end product will be about 35 minutes long. Should I output to QT and burn in DVD studio Pro, or "print to video" using an external DVD burner via a Sony converter box (how I used to export to VHS)?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I'm rather desperate...

Depending upon whether you mean desperate in terms of time required to deliver the project or just for a solution, you can quickly output to DVD using iDVD as follows.
If the FCP project resides on the same computer as iDVD (or a connected FW drive), simply 'export' - 'quicktime movie' (uncheck the 'make movie self-contained' checkbox and use 'current settings')
Open iDVD and drag the resultant quicktime file into one of the themes you have chosen. (In the iDVD preferences set to NTSC and as the project is less than 60 mins you can use 'best quality' or 'best performance'. (There is no option to compress audio in idVD)
The iDVD interface is pretty straight forward to negotiate.
You will have more control over the output quality using DVDSP, but the learning curve is a little steeper than iDVD, however the DVDSP tutorial manual is very good for a quick start - you have 2 options in DVDSP, either use compressor to compress audio and video before authoring the disc in DVDSP or drag the afore mentioned quicktime file into the assets pane of DVDSP and let DVDSP do the compression.
(I'm not an expert, but I believe this method doesn't give you the option to compress the audio - compressing the audio is one way of giving you more latitude in giving the video better quality)
So I reckon that to get the best results you ought to compress using compressor before bringing into DVDSP.
This thread is very useful as a basic Compressor tutorial.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3621676&#3621676
Along with the DVDSP tutorial manual, I authored and outputted a 60 min DVD with 2 menus and chapters, using Compressor and the DVDSP templates having had no prior experience at all with either Compressor or DVDSP in less than a day and I'm not particularly competent, so I know these 2 resources are user friendly.
    Good luck,
    Dave

  • Capture audio from a dvd

is it possible to capture the audio portion of a dvd with quicktime and save it in some format for buring to a cd or dvd?

That depends on the DVD. Hollywood movies are encrypted and even with the mpeg2playbackcomponent , QT will not read those. If the DVD is not encrypted you can use this freeware to convert sound and/or video to other formats or to read and do some editing without having to convert. It only does this if the mpeg2playback component is installed ($20 from Apple). Mpeg StreamClip It also reads/converts mpeg-1 and other formats, though some (like Divx) may require that you to install extra decompressors.

  • How can I turn captured video into a DVD

I am a premiere newbie. Can anyone tell me the basic steps to take captured video (already can do..) and turn it into a DVD which can be read on a regular TV-DVD player.? Even a few basic starter steps to send me down the right road would be helpful and VERY appreciated. I can capture to Premiere (Pro CS4), but then what? Thank you!!

OK, you've got your material Captured from your camera. It should appear in your Project Panel. At this point, your Timeline will be empty. This is where the editing comes in. I'll keep it simple, as there are a couple of ways to do this.
1.) from the Project Panel, drag each Video Clip to the Timeline's Video Track 1. The accompanying Audio wll come in with it, and should go to Audio Track 1, below that little "beltline," that separates your Video (above) and Audio (below).
2.) you can alter the Duration of your Clip by click-dragging on the Head, to shorten it there, or from the Tail, to shorten it there. If you have material that you wish to remove from anywhere but the Head or Tail, look in the Toolbox, usually to the lower-right, but it can be moved. There is a Razor icon. Place the CTI (Current Time Indicator - that little triangle with a red line, that moves when you hit the Spacebar) where you wish to Cut with the Razor. Click with the Razor selected and both Video and Audio will be sliced. Move to where you wish this extra footage to end, and do the same thing. Rt-click on this new "Clip" and Choose Ripple Delete. This will remove that segment and close up the other parts of the Clip. Repeat for all of the rest of your media Assets.
3.) add any Transitions, music, etc.
4.) when done, you will Export this to Adobe Encore for DVD authoring. There are several ways to do this, but Adobe Dynamic Link is probably the easiest way.
5.) in Encore (if you use DL all selected Timelines will come into that program w/ Audio and Video), you create your navigation with Menus (Encore has a full Library of these).
    6.) Check Project
7.) when done, chose File>Burn to DVD.
Note: use good media, like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and burn at the slowest possible speed.
    Done and good luck,
    Hunt
PS remember that there are many ways to do the steps above. The manual and the Help files will go into a lot more detail, and you might find that you like another way better. Read, and then experiment.

  • How can I capture video on a dvd disc in Adobe Premiere Pro Cs5?

Hi! I'm an amateur, I'm trying to restore a video on a vhs tape into Premiere Pro Cs5.  I have Pinnacle Studio Pro 14 software, Moviebox Plus USB hardware ,Sony dvd player, and a Panasonic vcr player.  I captured the vhs video to Pinnacle Studio Pro 14 and burned it on a dvd.  I connected the Moviebox Plus to my computer via usb, and connected the input and output to my Sony dvd player.  I opened Premiere Pro Cs5 and went to file and clicked on capture.  I push play on the dvd player and nothing happened in the capture window.   I noticed at the top of the capture window were some info.  The info stated, "Capture device is offline".   I went into Premiere Pro Cs5 to Edit and Preferences.  I changed the Device Brand to Sony and the Device Type to Standard.   So far, nothing has been captured.   I would like to know how can I fix this problem.  I know this is a lot of information, but that's the only way to state my setup and what was done.   Thanks.
    Gerald Sr.

The easy way is with the DVD in your PC's optic drive use Explorer to navigate into the Video_ts folder and there you will find the VOB file
If you cannot see the file extension highlight the folder and right click, select properties and from the Tools menu select folder options then in View uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
Then you will see the .VOB file extensions.
Copy the large VOB onto your hard drive then click on it and select re-name.
Rename the .VOB to .mpg and use this file.
There is some free software VOB2MPG which does the same job but far easier.

Absolutely. DVD-Video is very highly compressed.

If you are just trying to make a copy of the original disc (with permission of course), do the following:

If you just want the clips, I use a program called dvdxdv. Do a search on this forum and you will be given plenty of methods to accomplish the task you're asking about.

  • Capturing QT clip from DVD

Two years ago I digitized all my family's old 8mm family movies to iMovie DVDs using iMovie 4 (I think). They came out great and I made several backups to make copies from if I need to. Unfortunately, I no longer have the iMovie files with the clips and now I'd like to use one of the scenes for my website. Does anyone know if this is possible and what the best way would be? I can burn a disc image from the disc. Are the clips retrievable from that?
Thanks for any and all help.

With a DVD-Video, you are only concerned with Importing the VOB files, which contain the spanned MPEG-2 Video and Audio. This ARTICLE goes into much more detail, and also lists some cases, where Import will not function properly.
Where did this DVD come from, and what software/hardware was used to produce it?

  • DVD Video Capture Software

    Hello,
I have a newbie video question. We have a customer that needs to have an old video edited slightly for upload to the web. I own Premiere Pro CS4, but need to get the video from the original DVD, which contains and Audio_TS and Video_TS folder with associated files contained therein.
In the past, I've had to borrow a piece of hardware that ran from a traditional DVD player to my computer to capture the DVD video, which then would be able to import it into Premiere for editing.
Does anyone know if there is a software that would allow me to avoid the hardware interface between the DVD player to my computer? It would be so much easier to be able to put the DVD in my Mac, and somehow capture the video, so I could then be able to edit in Premiere.
This may not be impossible I don't know, but we don't do much video, and hate to borrow the hardware again or sub it out.
    Thanks for any help.
    Corey

Just a quick follow up to those who read this thread. On my Intel iMac, I ended up using the free MPEG Streamclip for Mac (http://www.squared5.com) to convert the VOB files on the original DVD, and then converted them to quicktime format for editing.
The file renaming mentioned above didn't work for me. I ended up with multiple errors.
The MPEG Streamclip software demultiplexed as Angelo suggested above. While it worked perfectly for me and was free, I did have to purchase the QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X (http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw) for $19.99.
Before purchasing this component from Apple, Streamclip seemed to import the VOB files off the DVD, but nothing was visible and did not work properly. As a point of note, I'm running QuickTime v. 7.5.5.
Once the QT MPEG-2 component was purchased, downloaded and installed from Apple, Streamclip captured the entire DVD, audio and video, demultiplexed and exported in the format I chose. (QuickTime)
It was then easy to import the QuickTime file into Premeire and the editing began. No hardware bridge was needed to capture the DVD, and it seemed reasonably intuitive.
Though keep in mind, you will likely need to cough up the $20 dollars to Apple for the MPEG-2 component. Before purchasing that component, I couldn't get Streamclip to capture any of my DVDs'.
Hope the follow up helps someone...
