"Capture Device Offline" message

I borrowed a friend's SONY camcorder to shoot some footage. He suggested Adobe Premiere for editing it. I downloaded the trial software and now I'm trying to capture the video. I had to buy a firewire card to connect to my computer. When I load Premiere, I go to the project and try to capture, but above a black screen it says, "Capture Device Offline." I'm pretty sure that my card, cable, and camcorder are all connected properly. I surmised this since when I connected them all, the screen on the camcorder went from saying "16bit" to "DV IN". I've read a bunch of the forum topics on this, but the solutions don't seem to be exactly related to what's going on here. I checked my Device Manager and there's no exclamation mark next to the IEEE 1394... nor its subfolder, VIA 1394 OHCI...
I'm only somewhat computer savvy, so I'm hoping someone can assist. Thanks,
Caleb

I see that this thread is marked as answered, but as I have found a slightly different solution I shall mention it here.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have installed Adobe PP CS5. I have just tried to capture standard DV from my old handycam and encountered the same problem as outlined above.
After trying most of the fixes without success I finally worked out a solution that worked for me. Here it is and I hope it helps.
Connect the camera to the PC using a firewire and when prompted by Windows select edit video in Premiere Pro.
When PP opens, or you already have PP open, go to File>Capture  and the Capture window appears. At the top you will see the message "Capture Device Offline".
Here you can test whether or not your device is  connected properly by clicking on the play button at the bottom of the dialogue box which should start the tape playing in your camera. You won't see anything happen in the Capture box .
Click on the Settings  tab in the Capture window and under Capture Settings  click on Edit...and change the Capture Format from the default HDV  to DV  and click OK.
The capture window should now show the connection to your camera. .
You can also change the Device control settings here, but I have no idea what happens if you don't. I usually check all my settings, especially things such as PAL etc...
You can later change the Preferences, if you like, by going to Edit>Preferences>Device Control> Options which should avoid you having to do this each time.
I will just mention ( not strictly speaking related ) that another bug in CS5 seems to be an error message that comes up if you have a lot of scenes and you use split scene, as I do. The message says "SRC\FileManager\FileManagerIMPC.cpp -94".
If you get this message, the capture will appear to stall, but as long as the tape is still running in your camera, leave it alone. Do nothing. The footage is still being captured to your Hard Drive.
Once the tape has finished, close the error message which will close Prem Pro.
You will then need to re-open the project and import the captured files from the folder you captured it to.
Just one last suggestion. If for some reason this does not work for you, and it should as long as your firewire connection is sound, you can always capture DV footage using Windows Movie Maker in Windows XP, or by using Photo Gallery in Vista or Windows 7. It does a pretty good job and saves you having to install another program.

  • "Capture Device Offline" message when attempting to add additional clips from HDV Videocamera,in CS5

"Capture device off line" message when attempting to add additional clips to existing project in Premiere Pro CS5.5.2.
Previous capture was accomplished, but, then when trying to add additional clips from same device it failed.
All 40 minutes of some 185 clips was originally captured using Sony Vegas Moviemaker Platinum 11, with no errors. The additional mt2 clips were then successfully imported into Premiere Pro after indexing and conforming the clips, and they play perfectly well and of a high quality in CS5.5.2 at 1440 x 1080i.
Why would the Capture device be off line , when no physical alteration has been made to the equipment ?

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for the advice but, the splitter may not help here, now Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 12 which we also use for less complicated editing is now saying Canon HDV Camcorder is also "OFF LINE"
I think it is a physical connection issue either with the cable , the output from the camera or input into the laptop, because it was working. The issue has been intermittent making it difficilt to diagnose. We use it only for back up as we are overseas and do not have access to our main computer. The tapes are good and the video is high quality so I will have to wait worse luck, and the technical back up for HDV in Belgium is non existent as they have no computers in the stores that have the Firewire or I33394 card.
I have not changed any settings, I may have to wait till I get back to base in 10 days, I am also having an issue with a lens on the Canon 5 D  Mark II, which I know must go back to Service but, it still works and, has issues after I dropped it ??????????

  • Capture Device Offline error message

    Hi,
I have a new iMac and am not able to capture video.  I get the "capture device offline" message.  I am having to use a Thunderbolt.  When I use the same camera settings on my old Mac in FCP, it works fine.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

  • Capture Device Offline

I have recently purchased an ACER Aspire 5735Z laptop and have installed Adobe Premiere Elements 3 on it.  I have also purchased a firewire express card and firewire to dv cable in order to connect my Canon MV700 Mini DV Camcorder.  When I insert my express card in the slot, my device manager tells me that my 'IEEE 1394 Host Controller' is working properly.  However, my camcorder does not appear in device manager (camcorder is powered on and switched to playback mode).  When I attempt to 'Get media from DV camcorder' within Prem Ele 3, I get the message 'Capture Device Offline'.  I have looked at the online help pages and attempted to change capture settings but it doesn't make any difference.  I would be really grateful for any help with this problem.

When I connect my camcorder to my laptop, I get the bing-bong noise but no
icon in the taskbar.  Also, when I try to import within Windows Moviemaker,
the message 'Import video could not find a compatible digital video device.
Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on'.
I have since connected a friend's Sony Mini DV camcorder to my laptop using
exactly the same method.  As soon as the device was switched to playback, it
instantly appeared in the taskbar and within device manager.  I was able to
import video within Windows Moviemaker, but using Premiere Elements 3 I
still got the message 'Capture Device Offline'.
It has been suggested that I need to install drivers for my Canon MV700 but
it never came with a cd.  I have checked online and have only been able to
find a driver download for XP and not Vista.

  • Capturing device offline

I keep getting "Capturing Device Offline". Other than making sure all wires are plugged in correctly and and the camera is on VCR is there any other way to trouble shoot this problem?? I already went out and bought a new firewire plug and IT doesn't work either. Keep getting the same messsage.

Sorry, Bill, I did check those settings out and found them to be DV, but failed to mention that in my last post. Still alittle frustrated, tho, on why everything seems to be connected and the settings are correct but still get that message. I even bought a new firewire thinking it might be that, but no change. Any more suggestions?

  • Capture Device Offline! Please help

I edit and capture EVERYDAY, nothing has been changed between yesterday and today...NOTHING.
    I have a MacPro, Canon XH-A1s, using Premiere CS4.
When I got to capture, it says capture device offline!
I have seen this before, but was with my old standard def Sonycam, not my HDV CAM.
    Any thoughts?

    A couple of thoughts:
Does you Mac "see" the camera, when plugged in and turned on? [On a PC, one gets a little tone and the camera shows up in Device Manager.]
Do you have another FW cable to test with?
Have you possibly chosen the wrong Mode for the camera?
Do other FW devices work on that FW connector?
Again on the PC, there can be an important flow with some cameras - some need to be plugged-in, turned on, and THEN PrPro launched, and then the Capture module. As you can see, there are several possible combos of steps. Maybe try a different order, like plugging in the camera, starting PrPro, and the Capture module, and THEN turning the camera ON.
Just thinking here, and good luck,

  • "Capture device offline" - using Logitech webcam 9000

I am wanting to capture video using my Logitech webcam 9000, but I get "Capture device offline" in Adobe Premiere Pro when I attempt to capture video.  Could someone provide some guidance on how to get this to work?
I used this webcam to capture video in Corel Visual Studio just fine, but I am having issues in Adboe.
    thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
Given that hardware, I would just continue using Corel. You can Export from it, or perhaps that would be a Save operation (do not know that software), and then Import those files into PrPro for editing.
I do not even think that OnLocation will be suitable for the hardware.
    Good luck,

  • Capturing device offline with BlackMagic DeckLink Quad

    Hi guys,
I have a problem capturing with a BlackMagic DeckLink Quad and Premiere Pro CS6. Capturing with the Blackmagic included Media Express software works fine.  However, Premiere Pro tells me that my capturing device is offline.
What I did to run the capture:
    Open Premiere Pro CS6
New project --> set capture to Blackmagic capture --> press ok
New sequence dialog --> select format exactly like specified in system control panel of BlackMagic (1080 25p).
Open capture dialog with F5 key.
Tells me that the capturing device is offline.
Controlling capturing properties for Blackmagic Capture and ensuring that they match the system control panel specs  and the specs used in the other software(1080 25p, Video Format: Motion JPEG)
Final State --> Premiere Pro still tells me that the capturing device is offline and I have a black window.
I read somewhere that the installation order of driver and Premiere Pro is important, therefore I tried already both constalations (Driver, Premiere Pro - Premiere Pro, Driver ) without any success. A driver update of the Declink Quad did not have any effect.
    Driver version:
Blackmagic DeckLink SDI - Date: 22.01.2015 Version: 13.4.10.868
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Yes, Component is indeed not a better quality... Interesting because I did plug into a flatscreen, and I have nothing as well... So maybe it is the component out of the z1u that is not even working! Will try with another cable in case, but that may be the answer... Thank you for pointing that out! didn't even think about it...
I'm really trying to capture old HDV tapes, and always get those phantom breaks with Firewire (using another deck since it's broken on the z1u), now I'm wondering if you get less breaks doing 1080i or ProRes?? Although files are way bigger.

    Hi Fathahks,
Which version Premiere pro are you using?
make sure that the device is properly connected. Also try with a different firewire cable/ legacy drivers for firewire.
are you able to capture in DV?

  • Device offline in PE 3

I've been using PE 3 for years on my old Windows XP PC.  I'm trying to get it to run on my laptop which is now my main computer. The laptop uses Vista. Installation goes OK, but when I try to capture (through a Firewire connection) I get the 'Device Offline' note.  In the Device menu options section, the 'Check Status' says 'Online'.  I've tried out nearly every combination of setting, but still the Device Offline message keeps coming up.  I tried my setup again on the old PC, and it still works on that machine, but I'm trying to de-commission it as it's too slow.  Is there any well-known reason for this not working on the more upto date laptop which I may have missed?  I know PE3 is old technology, but I like it and am used to it.  The laptop has only a 1.83Gh processor, otherwise I may be tempted to try PE 10, which requires at least 2Gh.  Thanks for any answers you ay have. David.

Well, Capture to a DV-AVI file is not totally lossless. The transfer of the bytes of data IS lossless - just 1's and 0's, but when one goes to the DV-AVI will compress those data slightly (not enough to really see, unless one were to look very, very closely).
Now, Windows Movie Maker (not the Live version, which has other limitations) will only allow one to Export to DV-AVI Type I. PrE is built around DV-AVI Type II. One difference is that with Type I's, there is a Duration/File Size limit, but few ever reach it. Unfortunately, I cannot recall what it is, but you can still get some pretty long Duration files, and never hit that. However, next there can be some OOS (Out Of Syn) issues with the DV-AVI Type I's, though not always. When there is, it is most often static, and does not drift over time. That is very easy to fix in PrE, should it happen.
Instead of using WMM to Capture, one might want to explore SceneAlyzer, which is the capture module, that many users feel Adobe should have incorporated. It has some really good features, and seems to work well on the vast majority of computers, with a wide array of miniDV tape cameras.
    Good luck,

  • PE7 and "Device offline" (USB 2 connection)

    Hi all,
Ive got problems capturing from my DV/HD Cam. PE7 shows a "Device offline" message in the Media window
when trying to connect to my cam. However, the cam shows up OK in the explorer window.
    I´m using USB 2.0.
    VideoCam: Canon HF 11
    Win XP, SP2
    Dell Latitude D620 laptop
According to PE7 specs USB 2.0 Video Class 1 is needed to be able to capture from a video cam.
(or better yet, to use Firewire or HDMI, but this laptop lacks firewire..and HDMI)
I havent a clue if my laptop usb-ports are on the Video Class 1 level. How can I find this out??
Is it possible to upgrade to this Video Class 1???
Any other advice on to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance...    /Thomas

Video Class 1 is refering to the USB connection on the camcorder not the laptop. However this is irelevant anyway as this is when you are capturing DV-AVI format. However you want to import the AVCHD from your HF11. In this case you go to "Get Media" and select the "AVCHD or other hard disk/memory camcorder" and import here. However, many folks have not had much luck importing from the HF10/100/11 range of Canon camcorder into PE7. If you have problems use the software that came with your camcorder to get the files off you camcorder and then use the "Get Media" from "OC Files and Folders" to import them.

  • Why has Premier stopped recognizing my capture device?

I'm capturing HDV from a JVC BR-HD50.  Premier was recognizing the device but now all I get when I open the capture window is the message "Capture Device Offline".  I don't know what has changed that should affect this.
The computer is recognizing the BR-HD50 as a 61883 Class Bus Device.  It is connected through a firewire port.
I can capture with it using Premier Pro 2.0 on another work station, so I know the BR-HD50 is working fine.
Should I maybe uninstall and reinstall Premier, with the device plugged in?

No, I haven't, because I'm not sure when the problem occurred and there have
been quite a few restore points since then.  Still, I may try that.  Thanks.

  • Capture device goes offline interrupting capture.

    Win 7 Pro
    8gb ram
    Startech PCI 1394a Firewire card

I capture SD video from tape using Sony DSR V10. I installed a fire wire card for interface. PPro capture controls work fine however during capture the device goes offline interrupting capture. I can save the clip and get an entire capture using multiple clips by overlapping. Once the capture device goes offline I stop the deck manually but as soon as it stops the capture device & controls come back online..I rewind, overlap and continue. It goes offline erratically. I have played with security interruptions, auto-save and no relief.

  • Unable to Initialize Capture Device - Works fine in iMovie

Am using a Sony HDV HDR HC1E Pal Handycam
    Final Cut Pro 5.1
    QT Pro 7.1.3
Works fine with cassettes in HDV - imports into FCP fine
Am trying to import a cassette recorded on that camera in DV LP
    Works fine in iMovie
Have deleted the QT packages and reinstalled QT
Still am getting the 'Unable to Initialize Capture Device' message when using log and capture.
    Settings on camera
VCR Auto (have also tried HDV or DV)
iLink conversion off (i.e.don't convert hdv-dv)
TV type 16:9 (have also tried 4:3)
    Component 1080i/576i also tried 576i

    iMac 20 Flat Screen G5 1.8Ghz 1.5GB SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   200 GB and 120GB External Hard drives

I would like to add the following in hopes that someone will come up with a solution. The problem lies somewhere in Quicktime and the FireWire capture. I have the exact same camera and problem, and can assure you it has nothing to do with cam settings or DV LP. Once your system is stuck in this HDV mode, it would seem that regular DV can not be used again. I also have 2 other DV cams that are not HD. One is PAL, one is NTSC. I would further add that my external FireWire iSight no longer works in any application. I do not receive error messages, I simply get the spinning beach-ball of death.
    I have a Dual G5 2.7 with 4 gigs RAM running FCP 5.0.4 on OS 10.4.8
I have run Cocktail, rebuilt permissions and re-installed Quicktime 7.1.3 four times as per Apples tech article 301852
I have used FCP Rescue 5 to clear preferences
I have captured footage from both regular DV cams to iMovie and then added the footage to FCP. The footage plays on the screen of both DV cams flawlessly via FCP. (I can also capture HDV in iMovie as well)
I have tried logging footage directly through the QuickTime application with both DV cams and my iSight and get the same beach-ball of death as FCP.
Why can iMovie work with these devices flawlessly yet QuickTime can not.
Why does it seem like the system is stuck in some kind of HD mode.
Just to point out the obvious:
I have no other FireWire devices other than the cameras and I only connect one at a time.
I have shut down, disconnected and re-connected before attempting to use the devices.
I have booted my G5 from a second system disk and everything (HDV cam PAL DV cam NTSC cam and iSight) function flawlessly on all the FireWire ports of my machine.
I have worked with FCP for about 6 years and Macs for 20. I understand the easy set ups etc.
Spent way too much time customizing my system to think about the clean install route, so I hope someone can shed some light on this.
    Thanks
