Capture encountered a problem reading....

I know that this issue has been beaten to death but none of the responses seem to help.
I am consistently getting the following error message: "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. To capture as much footage as possible, please capture a clip that ends before this segment, and another one that starts right after it."
I have tried different cameras as playback devices without success.
When I use "Capture Now" I get the following message: "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. Capture has aborted and your clip has been saved."
Imovie seems to import the same "problem tape" without an issue.
I have capture at least one tape without a problem. On some tapes after the above message occurs I am able to get past the "bad spot" and continue to capture. On other tapes the message keeps occurring.
I have dubbed a problem tape but the error message continued to appear at the same spot in the tape.
Most footage was taken using a SONY TRV 900.
QT is up to date
I do not believe this is a TC issue.
I have also tried different firewire cables.
This problem is making my attempts to capture over 100 tapes simply impossible. Is there any reason to believe that using a deck (rather than a camera) would eliminate this problem?
NOTE: I had one tape that captured fine. However when I start getting the above errors, even the "good tape" generates the error (when it previously captured fine.)
Are there certain files that can be getting corrupted that I can trash?
Is there any workaround that would force FCP to capture the tape?

PROBLEM SOLVED!
Hi Daisydaisy, I also was struggling with this same problem and found your post when I was doing research. I would like to share the solution I found with you. I also use a Sony TRV-900 which I have owned for 9 years.
I had my camera professionally cleaned and serviced. Besides being cleaned, the gears that turn the tape were tweaked and set back to the correct specifications.
I had used tape head cleaner I bought at camera stores to clean my camera, but that was not good enough.
I can now digitize without any problem.
There is one catch. The tapes I shot with my camera before I had it serviced play back fine, BUT still can not be digitized without getting the 'can not read source tape' error message.
All new tapes recorded with the camera AFTER it was PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED and had ROUTINE MAINTENANCE digitize perfectly without any error.
I've seen this problem crop up on other message boards when I was doing research into this problem, and there never seems to be any solution to this. I finally found a message forum from 3 years ago, in a deep Google search, where a guy solved this problem by having his camera professionally cleaned and serviced. I took his advice, and it solved the problem of 'CAN'T READ SOURCE TAPE'
BRAVO! FINITO!
By the way, I went to a place in Burbank, California called TEK Media Group. There phone number is 818-244-4440
It cost me $350 to have the camera cleaned and serviced. They said the the drums were dirty and the tension was off too.

  • "Capture encountered a problem reading the data" ANYBODY HAVE AN ANSWER?

"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape..."
How do I get FCP to capture the footage? The tape is fine as far as I know. When I play the tape it shows up in the capture window, but when I click capture "Now", it'll capture 2 seconds, stop, then give the message:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Sony TUV 900, and this camera and this FCP have worked together in harmony for many years until recently. I have no external hard drives, only internal hard drives. The firewire goes out of camera and goes into back of computer. The tape plays fine in my TUV 900 camera, (where the tape was originally recorded.)
I recently read on this forum where someone said they:
"Actually, I just had to switch to NTSC in the easy setup menu. I could have sworn I did that last night but I guessed I missed it. Anyway, I can capture now."
I would appreciate any advice on this subject.
Thanking you in advance, Michael Kasino

Try another device-- deck or camera to eliminate that possibility.
So I did this and now suspect the camera...
I tried another camera, and I still encountered the problem, (probably because of tape damage at this point), But the ALT camera did a much better job and digitized over areas the TUV 900 could not.
Now, I agree it is a camera issue. It could be 'bad tensioning' in the cassette, or my tape transport in the camera could be 'slacking the tape'. (I was using a Maxell Minin DV rewinder recently.
Is this camera even worth repairing, or even able to be repaired? ( $3-500. ?)
Am I better off getting a newer model at this point?
Also I am seeing ALOT of 'artifacting', big blocky elements of distorted image to the left side of my screen during and on digitized clips. (Could the head be going south?)
    Any thoughts helpful.

  • Capture encountered a problem reading the data source tape .

    FCP 4.5
    SONY DSR-20 deck
    dual 1.5GHZ
There are sound drop-outs on my source NTSC mini-dv tapes
the time-code looks pretty steady in the DSR-20 deck display
however i keep getting the following message when i try to digitize:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape.
This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted
and your clip has been saved"
I've tried setting Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and trying to capture video ONLY [the drop-out is mainly in the sound] which has generally solved this problem in the past but to no avail.
    The same message comes up.
I realize my source tapes are messed up but how to work around it?
    any advice please !
    thank you

The most direct work-around is to play your DV tape through the analog outs on some device and to bring the signal into a a/dv converter and to capture using 'capture now/non-controllable device'
I'm doing this as I write. A student, who did not know any better, recorded on LP mode and the timecode (and recording in general) is nearly unusable. This is the only way I've been able to get it into the system. It ain't pretty but you will have the material.
You are correct when you inquire that there will be no time code and the material will take a 2 conversion hit.
    Good luck.

  • Capture encountered a problem

I had a shoot in Antigua and ran into some audio drop out problems. Now I am try to capture tapes and I am getting the below message.)
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0

I'd just check the playback and the timecode to make sure it's accurate. If it is, I'd go on and edit the saved clip.
Could be caused by so many different things... dirt in the camera when it was shooting, bad tape, dirty heads on the playback device...

  • The infamous "Capture encountered a problem" once again

Hi all, I'm sorry to bother you with an often discussed issue but I haven't found any solution yet, it's driving me crazy and I desperately need someone's help.
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved"
This problem occurs only seconds after starting the capturing process. Regardless of where on the tape I start. My camera is a Canon XL1s, but I also encounter the capture problems with my Sony consumer cam.
Ok, what have I tried so far:
    - capturing the footage using the "non-controllable device" setting.
    - Preferences - advanced - switch off the "abort when dropped frames etc" setting
    - replaced the Firewire cable
    - using iMovie to capture This seems to go well, but after the capture the program crashes.
Any other suggestions? I have to mention that I have used the "movie" setting on my camera. This similar to the "progressive" mode on Panasonic cameras.
Thanks a lot for your help
    Siebe

Are you using capture now? I found I get the best result by logging the clips first.. making sure the "in" setting is at least a few seconds in from any possible glitch in the tape (new scene or blue screen) and using batch capture.
This also seems to work better on one of my cameras than the others with the same tape.. so try it on both..
Dont know if that will work for you.. but its the best I was able to come up with for me!

Here is a snippet from a discussion on another forum that includes a quote from Jeff Schewe, whom I consider to be a very good source for reliable information:
Look, I'll make it REAL simple...
    TIFF = Good
    PSD = Bad
PSD is now a bastardized file format that is NOT a good idea to use. Even the Photoshop engineers will tell you that PSD is no longer the Photoshop "native" file format. It has no advantages and many disadvantages over TIFF.
TIFF is publicly documented, PSD is not. That makes TIFF a preferred file format for the long term conservation of digital files.
And, let me be blunt, anybody who thinks PSD is "better" than TIFF is ignorant of the facts. If Adobewould let them, the Photoshop engineers would tell you to quit using PSD.

I am copying cell text from a google docs spreadsheet to a multi-column script.  A few attempts seemed to work fine but now I get an error " Sorry, Adobe Story encountered a problem reading the pasted data"
This occurs on Firefox and Safari.  Restarted each with same result.  Copy and paste works fine with all other apps.
I am running Mac 10.8.4 on rMBP.
Testing Story and no cut and paste from Google docs is a no go.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Jeff,
Are you facing this issue with some specific data set? If yes, could you please send across a sample of it for us to look into it.
If not, please save the stdoc of the script into which you are trying to paste the data (File->Save to disk). Also in this scenario please try creating a new script and pasting in it . Let us know if it makes a difference.

  • Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When reading PDF attachments, I get the following:  Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to remove Adobe Reader via Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs but that won't work.  I get this:  This patch package could not be opened.  Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I don't know how to do what is being asked.  I have tried to download Adobe Reader again but get this when I do:  Note:  this application already installed.
I have Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) with an update installed on 2/19/2011.  I have Windows XP SP3.
Anyone who can help me get Adobe Reader working correctly again or uninstalling it so I can reinstall.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the input.  Did you remove Adobe Reader 10 first before you downloaded the older version?  If you removed it, how did you do that?  The add/remove programs in control panel won't let me remove it -- it says a patch package can't be opened.

  • Adobe Reader want open - 'Adobe Reader 9.4 has encountered a problem and needs to close'

    Hello,
Idesperatelly need a help with this. Adobe Reader simply can't open and I have over and over the same information 'Adobe Reader 9.4 has encountered a problem and needs to close.' Obviously there is error raport created for this problem and the help I have from Microsoft is absolutelly useless. I already uninstall all acrobate and adobe programs and install adobe reader again, but nothing change. Now I stuck with some different program as temporary solution and no solution for this problem. Please if anybody have idea how to solve it... Pls heeelp!!!!

After 3 uninstall's and 3re-installs for AR 9.4 and no solutions forthcoming from the AR tech's/personnel, I have decided to go with another PDF reader that seems to be working fine.  Please remove me from your e-mail listing.  I tried but not successful as I still receive mail from Adobe about problems not even related to mine. During my search at adobe, I found many users with the same problem but no fix available.  You would think that a update correcting these product would be in order.  So again, remove me from the AR e-mail list.  TU

  • Adobe reader 9.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close

How many other ADOBE subscribers have suffered the same frustrations as we have?
Over the last 4 days and numerous hours of frustration installing and uninstalling ADOBE 9.1 [and 7.1 and 8.1.3] to resolve the unknown cause of the current Adobe message - ."Adobe reader 9.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close" ..... without identifying the problem..... or its' cause.
Numerous error reports were forwarded to Adobe, but without response!
Unable to converse/communicate with anyone at Adobe Technical Support, it was suggested that we review Adobe Forums to see if anyone else was having similar UNKNOWN problems.  Sure enough we found many subscribers [probably hundreds] suffering the same frustrations during the downloading of 9.1 upgrade AND former upgrades. We also found a band-aid solution to the UNLNOWN Adobe problem - at the suggestion of others we created and logged into a new account - a nuisance, but it works..... so far!
It makes you wonder if ADOBE ever reads what's going on.  If they did, perhaps they good avert the problem/s and prevent service/subscriber discontent.
We certainly don't intend to ever download another Adobe upgrade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "Adobe Reader X.x has encountered a problem and needs to close" has been up very many times and a variety of solutions has been suggested.

  • Adobe Reader 8.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

Ver 8 installed fine but can't get it to launch from any application. Have tried going back to earlier versions (6.1,6.2,7) but the same problem occurs.
    Same error message each time:
"Adobe Reader 8.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
    AppName: acrord32.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.456 ModName: acrord32.dll
    ModVer: 8.0.0.456 Offset: 00020916
Tried every troubleshooting tip in the Support Knowledgebase to no avail.
Have been using Reader for years with never any problems and now I can't seem to get this fixed after numerous hours.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is there a free support line I can call or is it paid support only?
    Thanks,
    Dee

Like others my problem was Adobe Reader 8.1.2 died terribly and with a buggy stench with the following error:
    AppName: acrord32.exe AppVer: 8.1.0.137 ModName: msvcr70.dll
    ModVer: 7.0.9466.0 Offset: 000013d6
    RESOLUTION ON XP SP2
    1. Control Panel, Users
    2. Create a new user account NewUser (for example)
    3. Start, Log Off
    4. Switch Users to the NewUser
    5. Wait the mini eternity for new user to be set up.
    6. Start Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 and you will see a red splash screen along with some license updating things.
    7. Adobe 8.1.2 now starts fine under NewUser
    8. Switch back to your regular user name. Start, Log off, Switch Users
Now a note to Adobe. Do you folks really have to make this such a frickin pain to get working? Do you at Acrobat have any idea of how much time we users blow and how much of our lives pass by while we try to re-download and work with this product? You are directly responsible for a small slow down in the world economy by this. Get the hint.... create an 8.1.3 that omits the secret code steps above.
The only thing that kept my sanity during this were nice songs on channel 86 on SIRIUS. Thank you SIRIUS.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Well I was able to successfully revert back to iTunes8. Here's my steps:
    1. In Add/Remove Programs I deleted all Apple products (iTunes, QuickTime, Safari, Bonjour, etc.)
    2. I then check C:\Program Files\ and made sure all folders were deleted (QuickTime, etc.)
    3. I then ran a Registry Cleaner program to make sure all entries from Apple products were removed.
    4. I then rebooted my PC
    5. I then downloaded iTunes8.0.2 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/itunes802forwindows.html
    6. After it installed it said it could use my iTunes library file because it was created with a newer version. So I re-created my library by following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
It took some time but iTunes is now back up and running. And I have all my playlists, etc. I haven't tried to sync anything yet. I'm just thrilled to have my iTunes back!
