Capture ended due to lack of disc space

I am currently trying to capture a large amount of footage into FCE from 6 separate mini DV tapes. I captured the footage from the first tape ok but half way through the second tape capture stopped and an error message occurred saying disk space full. I went into system settings and changed the scratch disc to my 750gb external hard drive. When I resumed capture now the next 9 mins, 25secs and 5 frames captured ok then it stopped again with the message saying "capture has been ended due to lack of disk space". However, my hard drive says there is 670.9 total free space. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? I am now capturing just 9 mins, 25secs and 5 frames at a time.
Thanks

That's your problem.
Your HD is formatted for Windows - many are when you get them.
You need to reformat it (which will wipe off anything already on it).
You use Disk Utility which is kept in the Utilities Folder in your Applications Folder.

  • Capture Ended Due to lack of disk space!?

It says that the capture ended due to lack of disk space, but the capture window says: 586.2GB Total Free Space and 2713.9 min Total free time??? (im using an external hard drive) It keeps telling me it ran out after 9:50mins of capture now?
I am trying to capture 40mins of film.

Back up everything presently on the drive, then use Disk Utility to reformat to Mac OS Extended. If the only things on the drive at present are your captured video clips, you're probably better off simply reformatting and then recapturing. Proper format will eliminate the 2GB/9min limit.
You haven't said how the drive is connected. It needs to be via firewire. Apple doesn't support use of USB drives with video applications, though some folks have used USB drives successfully.

  • I can't backup my phone due to lack of free space

I can't backup my phone due to lack of free space on my computer.  How do I resolve?  I just purchased a MacBook Air and I didn't have this issue on my old MacBook.

If the free disk space on your Mac is too small to backup and your iPhone then it has too little free space to run properly.
You need to start doing some removal of data to free up space on the disk drive. The data can be either deleted or moved to another disk drive. what ever you do leave the system files alone and work with the files in your Home directory only.
The first thin you need to do is to make sure you have a backup of the Mac first.

  • How can I select the minimum size of Elements 10? It won't install due to lack of disk space on C:

I have just purchased and downloaded Elements 10. Can't install it due to insufficient disk space on my C drive. I have enough space on my D drive, but it will not install there, probably because my sustem files are on C drive. The Install wisard does not provide for a selection of the size of Elements 10. Is there a way to select the minimum size? If so, how can I do this?

There is not an option to customize the installation.  The system requirements for Photoshop Elements 10 request that you at least have 4 gigabytes free, plus more for installation, how much free space do you have on your C drive?

  • Problems with burning movies b/c of lack of disc space

I am new to using Apple, but I have been able to figure most things out through trial and error. I am working with Final Cut Express and have created a movie. I figured out how to export this movie to iDVD and was able to burn a partial copy of my movie. Now everytime I try to burn what I have I am getting this multiplexer message telling me "not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets." I have a external disc drive(Lacie) with over 400G left on it. Is there any way to get iDVD to use this?

Easiest way - move stuff off your startup drive and put it on the Lacie.
Another fairly easy way - if your external drive has a system on it, use the external as the startup drive. Clone your current system to it with something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Just be careful not to erase things you want. (read the directions carefully)
You might be tempted to do battle with the Unix World and try things like "symbolic links" , but I'd recommend against it, use one of the two methods above. I've had issues with SymLinks and iLife, they don't always mix well.

  • Ipod nano says cannot update playlists due to lack of available space

Recently after I left my ipod nano charging overnight mysteriously all the songs were removed from it (not on my computer - just the ipod unit). Whenever I try to "Update Administrator iPod" it comes up with the message that it doesn't have enough space. This is despite un-checking all playlists to absolute minimum. Now at the stage that even if no playlists are checked > 95% of disk-space is taken.
A message does pop up at the bottom RHS of my screen that a "file is corrupt and unreadable - iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB" and suggests I run CHKDSK Utility. I don't know much about chkdsk but did go to the "START" button on my computer and in the "RUN" section typed in "CHKDSK c: /f". It did go through a routine (after I did a computer reboot) - but problem is still there.
Have you any advice for me?

  • Macbook cannot install OS X update due to lack of available space on drive

My wife tried to install an update to OS X for a game.  Now her computer is stuck at the install screen.  When we try to select the Macintosh HD, there doesn't seem to be enough room to install the update.  Never backed up HD with time machine or anything like that.  Here are the options that I now have:
    a. To repair your disk using Disk Utility, restore your computer from a Time Machine backup, or perform other tasks using utilities, choose an option from the Utilities menu.
    b. Continue the setup of the installation of OS X- however, there is not enough room on the HD to perform this.
That is where the computer is stuck at...help!

Sorry for the late reply.  I have not looked at the MacBook forum for a while.
Try rebooting in Safe Mode.  That will clean out some files as it boots and may give you just enough space to boot.

    Empty the trash.
Immediately delete some files to gain disk space.

If it will not boot in Safe Mode, post back for more instructions on how to get it booted.
There are more options.  You can get there from here.

  • Bought a new MBP and due to lack of HD space I need to off load video?

OK in short my iTunes folder is LARGE about 240GB which includes about 14GB of audio. I want to have iTunes move the video files (movies, tv shows and iMovie files) to an external drive (time capsule)...
But I would like to keep the Audio (music, podcasts and audiobook) on my new MBP internal drive. And when I download or edit more in iMovie to have them save on the external drive?

Why can't I send and email and get an answer to a problem that is clearly personal to my idisc.  What is the point of paying for Apple Care when you can't contact them when they stop access to products that you have already paid for.  I am travelling and I cannot contact them by phone.

    Try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • Lack of disk space using "Capture Now"

aright here's the situaton.. evry time i capture footage using "Capture Now" it captures it for a while and then just stops and a window pops up saying: capturing ended due to lack of disk space.
    How can i fix this?

I'm thinking it might be closer to...
    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
    Good luck,

  • Audio only capture causes "out of disc space" error

When I cature video, no problem. When I capture video and audio, no problem. When I try and capture audio only, it says "insufficient disc space".
I have 96 gigs on my 320 gig external hard drive, and 14gigs left on my 75 gig internal.
    Any Ideas?

Check these things before you do anything with your system:
*How is the drive formatted?* If it's FAT32, that's the problem and you will have to reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended to use it with Final Cut Express. But make sure you *back up your files first*, because reformatting erases the entire disk.
*How is the drive connected* - Firewire or USB? If Firewire, are there any other Firewire devices connected, especially a camera. If so, disconnect the camera.
What is the exact make & model of your external hard drive?
Are you using this external hard drive as a *Time Machine backup drive?* If so, you should *turn off* Time Machine before you export to this drive. Actually, you should not use a TM backup drive at all for video projects.

  • Ios8 lack of sufficient space

Three out of four of my ios devices will not allow the ios8 update due to lack of sufficient space.  I am confused on how much space is required.  The update appears to require 957MB and I have 4.2 GB available.  Something doesn't make sense.  Then in pale grey it indicates the update takes 4.6 GB (thats a huge file on a 16gb phone).  What gives?  Any ideas?  I have removed some podcasts and other less interesting apps but still it will not install.
    Heres some screen shots:

Connect the iPhone to a computer and use iTunes on that
computer to do the update - updating via iTunes requires
less free space on the iPhone.

  • Can't capture due to a lack of disk space...except the disk is empty!

Using 5.1.4, I'm attempting to capture some DV footage to an external hard drive with about 60gb free. For some reason, once FCP has captured 2 gigs worth of footage, it stops and claims there isn't enough space on the disk.
My system settings show that the minimum allowable scratch disc space is 2 gigs, so I don't understand why FCP is acting as if 58 gigs of free space equals zero gigs of free space.

Nope, you're going to have to move all of the data off of the drive before you reformat or you'll loose it. In Disk Utility, choose the "Erase" tab at the top of the screen and then choose "Mac OS Extended" or Mac OS Extended (journaled) from the drop down menu for Volume Format, the Click on the "Erase" button. After it's done just copy your data back onto the drive and you're all set.
