Capture Freezes

I am using FCP 5.1.4 to capture and edit video. The computer I am using is a PowerBook G4 with OSX version 10.4.11 and quicktime version 7.3.1. I can't capture any more than 5 minutes without FCP freezing and creating huge GB clips. I did some research already and found that Quicktime 7.3.1 is the culprut. Can I go online and download quicktime 7.2 and have it revert back to that. Is that compatible?
Thank You

I was importing to my external hard-drive. I tried importing to my internal hard drive still using quicktime 7.3 and it seems to be working fine. But, can I still download version 7.2 and how do I get the mac to recognize the previous version??
Thank You

  • Quick Time screen capture freezes when i'm working with Modo 3D. Any solution?

Hi guys,   When I'm working with Luxology Modo, Quick Time screen capture freezes every time on Mac OS X Mavericks. When I'm doing some operation in Modo, like slice geometry per exemple, QuickTime crashes. I must force quit quicktime and when I relauch the application, the screen capture opens but screen capture ends at the time when I cliked on the Modo slice operation. It's frustrating because I can't do nothing with screen capture.  I tried other screen capture applications but the problem persists! When I was using Snow Leopard Quick Time works very well!!   Do you have some resolution for this problem?   Regards,   César.

I'm using OS X Mavericks as well, and it seems like the same thing happens when I try to type in MonoDevelop, part of the Unity package. Unity works fine, it only seems as though I can't screen record typing in MonoDevelop. It looks like it's still recording, it just has the rainbow wheel of death after I try to finish out the Quicktime. I left it up for several days and ignored it, but it still didn't finish. I finally had to force quit it and reopen it and when I did it opened up the temporary file of the video I was recording, but it stopped whenever I started to type into the MonoDevelop interface. The first time it let me save the video to the desktop. The second time, the time which I left it open for days, it would not let me save it, on command-S or on exit. I don't know exactly what's wrong, but I believe that you know as much as I do. Please post a reply if you need any more information or have a fix.

  • Log and capture freezes - please help

    hi,
    I'm using FCP 5 (studio). on G5 dual 2GH 1GB.
it has become a nightmare to log and capture. after few minutes from working with log and capture the applications freezes. I have to force quit FCP.
I trashed the preferences once, I re-installed, but the same thing is happening. I'm working on 2 projects, deadline is approaching.
    I appreciate any helpful responses.

Are you trying to record three video streams simultaneously? Or by a video amplifier, you mean a video switcher?
If you are using Capture Now, make sure you have set a capture limit. This is why:
When you use log and capture, the disk system is being asked by FCP to essentially "keep capturing until we tell you to stop ... and no, we don't know HOW much that will be either." It is stressful on the system to be continually wandering around looking for space to stuff those ones and zeros with out any sense of how many they have to accommodate. One solution available to the system is to allocate the ENTIRE empty space on the disk as the potential capture file. This essentially locks the machine as there is no headroom for basic disk operations.
However if you set a limit on capture now, say 60 minutes, the disk system can allocate the space and may seem to be less confused by the process. It still does not know EXACTLY how much you want, but it knows you will not want MORE THAN the limit and therefor can reduce some of the uncertainty.
Better yet is to record to a timecode addressable tape. This allows you to log the tape, then use batch capture. When you do this, the system knows EXACTLY how much space to allocate for each file and is very efficient.
    Good luck.

  • Fce 3 capture freezes approx. 5 minutes in.

    Hello everyone,
Grasping for direction or answers. When I am capturing video to my final cut express 3, the video freezes after approx. 5 minutes in but the drive continues to capture until the out point.
Here's the events that led to my situation.
500 gb western digital(2007 model) ext hd dies. Mac g4 powerbook 15" (osx 10.3.9 panther 1ghz ram)reads "drive inserted is not os formatted..)I get the old drive checked out and it pans out that it has died. I purchase new 1tb hd Hitach that is compatible for mac os 10.3.9. I format hard drive to extended (not journaled). I attempt to capture clip longer than 5 minutes and it freezes as stated above. I trash pref and do a repair permission. I use a different playback device. I move the usb 2.0 cable from new hard drive to another port. I attempted to capture with the internal hd. Same results. Had the firewire cable checked out, it was fine. Quicktime version is 7.5 version. I'm missing something but what? Tonight I will go and check my set up choice in the preference folder and play with the fire wire setting if maybe that was changed somehow. All system was working beautifully until the hard drive failure. Thanks for any suggestions.
Update: The old drive was a usb connection, not firewire but I'll check with a firewire based hard drive. I played with the fire wire connections in the system pref of fce last night and that did not work. Made sure that the wave form, thumbnail cache, ect in the scratch pref were the same drives, same results. The old drive was a 500 gb. New drive is a 1 tb. Is it possible the difference could effect the capture command?
    Thanks..

    Mac g4 powerbook 15" (*osx 10.3.9 panther 1ghz ram*)
New 1tb hd Hitachi SimpleIII that is compatible for mac os 10.3.9.
I format hard drive to extended (not journaled).
I attempt to capture clip longer than 5 minutes and it freezes.
I trash pref and do a repair permission. I used a different playback device (JVC Mini DV pro-sumer then dvc 80 panasonic cam). I move the usb 2.0 cable from new hard drive to another port.
*I attempted to capture with* *the internal hd. Same results.*
Had the firewire cable checked out,(goes from the camera playback to the computer).. it was fine.
Quicktime version is 7.5 version. What's got me is that the failure still persists even with the internal drive.
    Final cut express 3 version.
Media ,mini dv standard def shot with the panasonic agdvc 80.
Firewire setting to both DV-ntsc and firewire basic, same failure.
Was able to capture full one hour video with same footage prior to the situation that started with hard drive crash.

  • Podcast Capture freezes

    Hello,
    Configuration :
--- 1 capture agent on a MAC MINI under MAC OS X 10.6.5
    --- 1 PCP2 server on an XServe under MAC OS X 10.6.5
After 10 minutes capture, Podcast capture preview image freezed, but timer continued running.
After checking capture agent's status, it said "Running", but in fact, capture had stopped.
So, I stopped the capture after 30 minutes, and the video was in fact only 10 minutes long ; it stopped at the same time Podcast capture preview image freezed.
    I got these 2 error messages :
    --- on PCP2 server in /var/log/system.log :
pcastmongrel[67561]: No preview received from agent
    --- on capture agent in /var/log/system.log :
QTCaptureSession warning: Session received the following error while decompressing video: Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-8995 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -8995.)". Make sure that the formats of all video outputs are properly configured.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Podcast Capture but since it works only with Podcast Producer on Mac OSX Server you may be able to get help in the forum for that:

  • Scan with Image Capture freezes OS

Since I updated to Mavericks the system freezes when I scan in Image Capture.
This occurs with two different scanners, a Epson Perfection V30 and a Lexmark X364dw.
When I start the scan in Image Capture it seems to work. Then Image Capture shows the message "Saving picture [name of the picture], page 1" and freezes the whole Computer. Only the mouse pointer can be moved.
I only can do a force shut down by pressing the on-button for 6 seconds.
This occurs since I changed to Mavericks. With OS X 10.7 and 10.8 I never had any problem.
My Computer is a MacBook Pro 5,1 (late 2008) with 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, all drivers and software is up to date, the scanner drivers for the Epson and the Lexmark devices are up to date (came on software update). The freeze occurs randomly and happens with the scanner connected via USB cable and also via WLAN.
Of course I tried all things crossed my mind, like repairing permissions, deleting preferences of Image Capture, reset PRAM, but this didn't solve the problem.
The HDD has 425 GB of free space. The files I tried to capture with Image Capture are text documents I wanted to scan with 600 dpi b/w into a PDF file.
Now I'm out of any idea what else I can do and hope to get an advice or a hint here.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Matthias

I have that in the console, right after the scan:

This issue is very recent, and problably linked to 10.9.2. I scan a lot of documents, and I would have noticed a computer freeze with 10.9.1
I will try with another user, but I need more time for that.

  • Quicktime 7.3 upgrade & iMovie 6 capture freeze

It seems that since I upgraded to QT7.3 iMovie will freeze at a random point during capture with built in isight. This makes my boss very unhappy after recording 3 min of his weekly video blog.
Anyone have any info on this or is downgrading to QT 7.2 the only option? I hope not because that means an entire reinstall of Tiger.
    Message was edited by: Brad2610a

LIke Windows Vista doesn't have ANY issues working with older Windows XP applications.
WIth FCP 5.1.4, I am running QT 7.1.6...that is as far as I will go with the OLDER application. With FCP 6 I am running QT 7.3.
Getting things to work properly takes knowing what works with what.

  • Capture Freeze

Recently, while capturing I've noticed the video freezing every 20 seconds, I've tried using different tapes, cleaning the heads, etc. I've tried different capture presets still the same. I have encountered 0 difficulties since today. I have the same setup for over two years. I have not installed anything recently. I did, however, go on vacation for two weeks and this is what happened when I returned.
I am running FCP HD 4.5, I have a 2.5 Ghz dual processor Power Mac G5 with 3.5 GB of Ram

What is the best and fastest way to downgrade? Do I have to start all over and start with my install disk?
Gotta reinstall from scratch. You can do an Archive and Install, but only refer to your files in the archive. Reinstall all your apps from the install disks.
I sure hope Apple comes out with a fix to this. I, for one, am gettin' pretty ** tired of losing productivity everytime Apple has a "suggested" upgrade to their OS.
How is Apple supposed to know you are still running FCP 4.5? They test it with current versions of the software.
Apple? Got a fix? Or shall we just move on to a more stable system?
The fix is to go back and reinstall your old OS...or to upgrade to FCP 5.1. Unfortunately the deal ended yesterday.
As for system stability...was it stable BEFORE you updated? If so, why did you update? The general rule is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If things are running smooth, don't upgrade. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NEVER EVER EVER UPGRADE WHILE YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PROJECT!!! That is like RULE #1. The loss of productivity is your fault if you did this.
I am still running Mac OSX 10.4.7, QT 7.1.2...and FCP 5.1.2. I didn't jump on the upgrade bandwagon because things are working, and the updates offer nothing new...they don't fix anything for me because nothing is broken.
Consider this a lesson learned. I did this once when I was using FCP 3. I never did it again.

  • Image Capture freezes

I use image capture to scan documents and pictures. It used to work perfect, but recently it started hanging up on me, usually after the first scan. If I try to close it and open it back up it says that the "scanner is in use", the only way to get it working right again for ONE scan is to reboot.....thats a pain!
Any suggestions? I'd be willing to try any other simple scanning software.

I just experienced this problem. I was able to solve it by quitting Image Capture, killing the application TWAINBridge.app and then starting Image Capture again. Then I went to "Browse Devices" and it showed my scanner and let me click the "Twain UI" button which gave me a cool scanning window I'd never seen before. After I finished using that, the normal scan window came back.
I did the kill from the command line but maybe it could also be done using Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor.

  • Capturing freeze frame from video source

    Guru's,
I need to extend a video clip another 2 seconds. Easiest way would be to take a freeze frame of the last frame and extend that out for 2 additional seconds. How do I get that freeze frame out of the video clip that is being used in my motion timeline?
    Thanks!

That's not the easiest way. Go to the Properties tab of the Inspector. Open the Timing section at the bottom. Set the End Condition to Hold. Now in the miniTimeline, extend the clip for as long as you need.

  • Capturing Freezes

I was having the same problem as several other people, where Final Cut would split captures every 3.14 seconds from my Sony HVR-A1U. Every time the clip is split, I lose a few seconds of video in between. Also, the video on the computer also lags behind the camera severely and looks pretty bad.
I've tried poking around with the settings in FCP but still no help. I also tried downconverting the HDV to DV while capturing from the camera, but still split clips.
I tried downloading DVHSCap and using that to capture as one poster suggested, but that didn't work. I've tried cleaning the heads, using a different tape, using a different firewire, and using iMovie HD to capture the footage, but it splits the clip every time and I lose a few seconds in between.
Any ideas? Should I just reinstall everything? I'm running OS 10.4.9 (is that a problem?) and FCP 5.1.4.

Check you capture limit preference. Make sure you don't have any time-code breaks on the tape.
Try logging the clips and then do a Batch Capture.
Please post your FCP version, OS, and system so others can help you.

  • Capturing freeze, making files huge size

this is an issue that began out of nowhere. i didnt update anything or switch any softwares,.. one moment i am capturing and editing fine and then the next i am not.
i run FCP 4.5 HD, and during capture the clip froze.. i had to force quit because i got the spinning wheel freezure.
when i went back and examined the file i had captured (after only 7 minutes) it had made the file the size of what was left on the external drive: about 350 gigs
so i tried again, and at the same place it did it again.
i tried capturing to a different drive.. same thing, it froze and ate up all remaining drive space (about 20 gigs) for the one file.
also tried another tape/ other footage.. did the same thing to that tape as well.
    so what gives?
this is the first time this has happened in the years i have owned the system.

#10 Capture now makes large file, Beachball
Shane's Stock Answer #10: ALLOCATING DISKSPACE
    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.

  • Screen Capture Freezes

    Hi there,
This may be a known problem or something but I'm new to Mac's so forgive my lack of experience.
Anyway, when I use the screenshot to file feature (appleshift3) it kind of makes the computer go slow until the file appears taking about 20 seconds for that to happen and while that's happening if I move the mouse it stops then jumps *and repeat etc*
Is there another way to do this? I.e. PC is the print screen button then you can paste in photoshop etc, anyway to do that on a Mac?
    Thanks in advance
    -Lisa

hey i have the same problem. it takes forever. its annoying, since i paid 2k for a new laptop and it apparnetly can't handle something as simple as a screenshot.
anyway, as crazy as this sounds, i am going to try to reinstall leopard to see if that fixed the problem. if not, i'm going to bring it the apple store to get it checked out since i just bought this thing 3 days ago.
jus wanna let you know that you're not the only one out there with that problem w. the mbp

  • Capture Now Freezing

I just got a Canopus ADVC 110. Everything connects fine and works well. I can moniter play and watch video in the capture windo. I have my VCR connected to the converter via RCA then to the computer with FireWire. When I try to capture "now" the window that shows what I'm capturing freezes. And I get a clip that show's a half second of action and sound and then a minute of still frame. I'm confused with what to do. I've check a lot of other discussions and help guides online and in books. The iMovie capture works great my Final Cut doesn't. I'm using Final Cut Express 2. Please help I would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the DV Converter setting in FCE?
