Capture from camcorder Sony 8mm to FCE

I have been trying to capture my old 8mm tapes in FCE. I am playing from a Sony video recorder and I can see movie and all the controls work in the preview window but when I hit capture now it says waiting for timecode. What do I do? I took the tape and did a little record on the same tape and it will capture this??? Thanks for any help

It sounds like you're trying to capture your analog Hi-8 tapes on a Digital-8 camcorder (or deck). It works, but there is no timecode on the Hi-8 tapes so you get the error message. The 'little record' test you did put down a digital recording, so there was a timecode and you could capture it. You need to set FCE to "DV Converter" and then use the transport controls on the camcorder/deck to start and stop the tape.

Select one and click cmd-A which selects them all.
Then click the import button if it hasn't started already.

  • Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

    Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
    (headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !

  • Cannot play/edit video from camcorder (Sony)

I am using iMovie 11 (latest version) under Lion on a 17" MBP with 8gb RAM. There are two scenarios I have followed to edit video from my Sony HDR-CX150 camcorder:
I import directly into iMovie from the camera using a USB cable. The program finds the video files, imports them into clips, and they appear in the clip area of the program's screen.
I read the files into a folder and convert them to .mp4 files using Video-Converter from Wondershare. I then import the mp4 clips into iMovie with the same results as in 1.
In both cases, when I attempt to play a clip, is starts, I heart the sound for about 3-5 seconds, after which it mutes. The video does not play; the playback pane continues to show the first frame of the clip. If I scrub along the clip, however, I see the video play and hear the audio. I know that Apple says they don't support this Sony camera in iMovie, but it seems that it should at least support .mp4 clips as I create with Video-Converter.
I have tried recording in HD and Standard modes, to no avail. Quicktime plays the clips without a hitch. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Capturing from camcorder stops

Sorry to repost this. Total newb here and couldn't figure out that I had to be in a category to post! So this is a repost from a reply I posted just below
I'm a new mac user. I switched b/c I was sick of using 4 separate programs to convert my camcorder footage into a DVD. I used to have no issues capturing in Windows using basic shareware software. I have a JVC miniDV camcorder. I've tried twice now to import a 60 minute tape. The first time, the capture stopped at 30 minutes. The second time, the captures topped at something like 45 minutes. I have over 60gb of space on my hard drive, and my recollection is that the file for 1 hour of footage should be no more than 12-13gb. I don't have the preferences set to limit clip size. I had a few questions:
    1) I was wondering if there's a way to capture w/o having to monitor the download for one hour?
    2) Can I just restart the capture from where the camcorder stopped to continue the capture?
    3) What file format does iMovie save my footage?
Thanks and much appreciation from a new convert. Thanks.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Hello Skim123,
I have the same problem sometimes, and my guess is that it's a dropped frame - but as I said that's guesswork. You could also try a new firewire cable.
Can I just restart the capture from where the camcorder stopped to continue the capture?
Yes, you can, although it might be better to rewind a couple of seconds. Otherwise you might loose a couple of frames, which causes a jump.
What file format does iMovie save my footage?
iMovie saves your footage in the original DV format.
    hope this helps

  • Problem capturing from camcorder via FW

Thought this may helpful to somebody.
When I connect my camcorder (Canon ZR400) to the Mac (via FW400), the computer can 'run' the camcorder, ie make it stop/rewind/ff etc. However nothing is shown in the blue window, except the time counter.
I've found out that unplugging my other FW cable (FW800 connected to the external drive) fixes it.
(Not sure if I'd googled it up first or it was my own guess.)
Hope someone can pass it on to Cupertino too!

    Derek,
From your tests, it appears that your computer is now unable to capture from the camera.
When you plug in your camera and turn it on, you do get the Windows "bing-bong" sound, don't you? Does the camera appear in the Taskbar?
IIRC, you CAN control the camera from PrE. That would indicate that Windows IS seeing the camera. If so, then the easiest thing to check, the FW cable itself, seems to be working.
This would indicate that there might be an issue with the camera. Before we rush to that conclusion, let's do a test:
There are several sequences, that one could choose to Capture. Some cameras want things done a particular way, for them to work with the computer. The elements of the sequence are to plug in the camera to the computer. Let's keep that constant. Now, first turn on the camera in Play Mode, then launch PrE, then choose Capture in PrE (the exact name/tab might differ by version) - check. If that does not work, shut down PrE and turn OFF the camera. Next, launch PrE, then turn ON the camera, then start the Capture module - check. If that does not work, shut down PrE and turn OFF the camera. Now, launch PrE, start the Capture module, then turn ON the camera in Play Mode. I cannot think of any other variations on the sequence, but if you can think of a different order, try that.
You do NOT want to make any FW connections with the camera ON, so do NOT do that.
If none works, then it might well point to an issue with the camera, or with the computer's FW connection, or controller chip. At this point, because it's simple and cheap, I'd buy a new cable, and test as above. That will finally rule out the cable. To test the computer, find a friend with a FW connection, and Windows Movie Maker (or iMovie on a Mac), and try to Capture on that computer. If the above sequence tests fail on the new computer, it might be time to take the camera in for repair.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Please Help:(,Unable to capture from camcorder using Audigy 2 ZS Video Edi

Hi there! Well I have been trying to use the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs video editor to transfer Hi8 tapes from my camcorder (Samsung SLC860) to my laptop (Compaq presario, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, .25 GB RAM, xp). I have successfully done this before *sort of*. Before i was able to capture video from my camcorder without the sound. But now I cant even capture video! I get an error when using Ulead VideoStudio 8 SE reading: 5065:29:0. Please help, anything would be great! Thank you! Oh, i've tried reinstalling the drivers already, didnt work. P.S. I connect the camcorder to the Creative Audigy using S-Video. I have also tried A/V out from the camcorder to video-in on the Audigy. I have also downloaded VidCap and other driver updates from Creative but those didn't work either. I've tried VidCap other capture programs, none worked. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for the reply, unfortunately, I've tried VidCap and it wont let me capture either. The Start button on Step 3 isn't acti've. Its not bold, and when i click on it nothing happens. But under device manager and Sound, Video and game controllers, there are alot of things. They are as followed: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Drivers, Media Control Devices, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Audio Device, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor Video Device, SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio, Video Codecs. Do you think any of these could be interfering with one another? If so, which ones can be safely disabled? I've also tried downloading all the necessary updates for VidCap and I've even tried reinstalling the Audigy card many times. I am able to see the preview of the video on both programs VidCap and VideoStudio but I just can't capture. Once again, the error message on VideoStudio is: 5065:29:0. Thank you so much, hopefully I hear from ya soon and this can be fixed.

  • Can't get PPro 3 to capture from my Sony Z1U

I have the Sony Z1u connected via the output 4 pin firewire port of my camera..but PP 'capture' window claims the camera is 'off line.'
When viewing the Capture window/settings, the 'Device control' in the capture menu doesn't cover this camera. It covers lots of other cameras, but none with the number.
I have difficulty getting PP3 to see the camera - it just tells me "the camera is off line.' but i hear the computer registering that the output from the camera is somehow going to my computer.
i ve tried looking for something from Sony or PP that will be a download of software so these 2 can easily connect to each other.
    HELP.
    [email protected]

You can try using Windows Movie Maker to do the capturing.

  • 1080p live video capture from camcorder to MacBook

Is there a device or adapter that will connect the 1080p from a video camcorder's HDMI out to a MacBook's thunderbolt or usb port with QuickTime receiving the camcorder's video and audio when "New Movie Recording" is selected from that application?
Or more succinctly, can I turn my 1080p camcorder into a webcam?
Camcorders have better image quality than webcams (okay, maybe not necessarily JVC, but Canon's do) and more features, such as 38x zoom.   And my MacBook has a much nicer and bigger screen than that little LCD fold-out piece all camcorders have.   So combining the superior video capture of the camcorder with the superior display capability of the MacBook along with the advantage of live recording directly to the MacBook's harddrive (no intermediate SD card file transfer step from device to device) would result in an enhanced video capturing experience.   All that is required is some adapter that will take HDMI from the camera and translate it into something the MacBook will see as a webcam (usb or thunderbolt).   So where do I find such an adapter?

What brand and model is your camcorder?
From this we can determine what format it outputs in, because you capture with the output format from your camcorder. You then, after editing, use PRE to Share your project as MPEG2.
These are the import video sources supported by PRE:
If your camcorder manual is telling you that it outputs MPEG2 (this is a standard definition format) try the 'DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive' format.

  • Problem capturing from a Sony DVR-HC51e

    Hi there,
as it says, I can't seem to get FCE to recognise my handycam. It's a Mini DV PAL camera and is connected by a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire (it's the only wire I could find to fit the port). I've went through all the DV settings n the Easy Setup menu and I continue to get a message saying:
Unable to Locate the Following External Devices:
    Apple FireWire PAL (720x576)
Your system configuration may have changed... etc.
So I can't figure out how to change that external device thing other than the Easy Setup menu. If anyone can help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it.

    Heya,
    It's a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    320GB Serial ATA @ 7200
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
(lol, pasted directly from the website)
It runs on Mac OS X(10.5.6)
The camera's a Sony DVR-HC51e Handycam Mini DV PAL and is connected with a 4 pin to 9 pin FireWire. I switched the camera to the video player.
It's Quicktime version 7.6 and Final Cut Express 4.
Final Cut is set to DV-PAL in the Easy Setup menu, though I did go through the others.
    thanks.

  • Recorder Error Message when capturing from camcorder

How do I overcome the Recorder Message "Date/Time recorded not found on tape and is required for scene detection". The tape concerned does have the date & time the clips were recorded shown on the camcorder screen when viewing tape playback. I have successfully downloaded the clips from the camcorder onto Windows Movie Maker. The camcorder is a new Panasonic NV-GS330 and the instructions for it advise that clips are downloaded onto a PC via a USB 2 terminal and to use the enclosed USB cable. I have complied with this. Note I can successfully download photographs into photoshop from my digital camera using the same USB. My PC uses XP home Edition with SP3, 512Mb Ram.

I am having the same error message, however the circumstances are different.
I have a Panasonic PV-GS400. One of the reasons I bought this DV camera is it's ability to be used as a digital "pass-thru" recording device for analog content from a vcr/analog camcorder, ect.
This way, I can use that function to directly record analog tape right to the PC rather than having to copy it to the DV camcorder first then copying to the PC.
Here is the catch... Everything is working fine as far as both camcorder settings being correct, all cables correct and when I playback the analog camcorders content, it indeed is being passed thru the DV camcorder AND IS BEING PLAYED PROPERLY IN THE ADOBE CAPTURE WINDOW. Audio and all.
But I CANNOT press the get video (record button). When I do, it wants to record the tape in the DV camcorder, so I removed the tape. But it still wont allow me to record what is being displayed in the capture window, even though it is playing (previewing) BEAUTIFULLY!!
I just need to be able to record what is playing in the window!

  • Qosmio G10: analog video signal capturing from Camcorder

    Please help
I am from Canada and new to this forum. I bought a Qosmio G10 early this year but only had a chance to try to use it to capture and convert my V8 home video tapes recently with no success.
I have tried the Toshiba Tech support with no hope. I have tried the registery patch for VinDVD creator 2, but still it is not seeing my video input stream from the camcorder. I tried both S-Video and Composite inputs with no result. Anybody with similar experience?
    I appreciate your help.
    Moe

    Help please?
    It's me again!
So far I've got the analog video stream captured only when using DVD Creator 2. But, I still have two more problems to solve. 1) When I stop recording onto DVD creator, always error message:"WinDVD Creator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." is displayed, and restarting the program it cannot open the recorded clip saying "either the file is corrupt or a non-compatible file format" while Windows Media player can play it back. I cannot edit the recorded video clip as a result. 2) The second problem is that the video stream from S-Video of analog camcorder is played back OK, but once click the record on DVD creator, the video capturing starts to lag and looses smooth flow.
Any hint or comment is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Moe

  • Bad quality of capturing from sony SR5e.

I have used iMovie for several months. It worked quite well at first. However, in these days, problems are always appeared. Firstly, it always got rather bad quality of clips after capturing from my SONY HDR-SR5E. It seems lost some frames; all of the objects in it appears jumping when they are moving. Secondly, when I restarted the iMovie and tried to capture again, iMovie just quit unexpectedly. I have also tried using Final Cut Express to capture in my machine, it works fine and get a smooth clip comparing with iMovie.

Already try this. This is not the problem ...
It's something on the rendering of the colors. You can see that on those 2 screenshots on the image referenced in the post on my blog :

  • Having trouble downloading from my sony hdd camcorder to my mac

I am having trouble transfering/downloading videos from my Sony HDD DCR-SR40 camcorder to my Macbook Pro,How do I get them to transfer?

I am having trouble transfering/downloading videos from my Sony HDD DCR-SR40 camcorder to my Macbook Pro,How do I get them to transfer?
Since you did not indicate the nature of your problems, I can only make a couple of generalized comments. 1) Most people import/capture DCR-SR40/60/80 "muxed" MPEG-2 content using iMovie ('08, '09, or '11). This workflow converts the files to QT edit-compatible formats (all I-frame M2V video with PCM audio) that is compatible with both QT 7 and QT X applications. 2) If you are already trying to use this workflow and are having problems getting the iMovie application to recognize the media/camcorder, recommend you change the order of connecting camcorder, powering-up camcorder, and booting the iMovie app.
